Living an Imperfectly Perfect Life - Episode 5006 Host: Scott Smith Episode Description Scott Smith explores the concept of living an imperfectly perfect life, discussing how life's natural peaks and valleys affect our journey. He shares insights about human adaptation, the challenge of maintaining New Year's resolutions, and the importance of mastering life's basic fundamentals before pursuing complex goals. Key Takeaways Life naturally flows between peaks and valleys due to hedonic adaptation, and understanding this pattern helps manage expectations and responses. Mastering the basics (sleep, nutrition, hydration, health) creates a strong foundation for pursuing larger goals. The fundamentals of human experience haven't changed throughout history - success comes from embracing simple, proven principles. Discipline and self-awareness are crucial for maintaining progress and achieving goals beyond basic needs. Featured Story Scott discusses National Quitters Day (January 10th), when most people abandon their New Year's resolutions. He connects this to his Perfect Week Planner tool, emphasizing how awareness and discipline can help maintain momentum despite the natural tendency to quit. The story illustrates how simple, consistent actions often yield better results than pursuing perfection. Scott's Three-Step Approach Master the basics of life first (sleep, nutrition, hydration, health) Find and follow existing maps for achieving specific goals Maintain discipline to execute plans consistently Memorable Quotes "If you master the basics, if you get right down to it, if you got your health, life is perfect." "You are the only person responsible for your life experience." "The stuff of life is the stuff of life is going to keep coming at us. And the basics of life are the basics." In today's episode, we're delving into a topic that strikes a chord with many women—navigating the complexities of the festive season. Beyond the glittering lights and holiday cheer, this time of year can bring unique challenges, stress, and heightened expectations. Joining us for this insightful discussion is Kirstin Bouse, a clinical and forensic psychologist with nearly three decades of experience. She is the owner of Perth Psychology Collective, who offer a wide range of psychological assessment and therapy services to the local community. When her own perimenopause journey began 6-years ago, Kirstin looked to psychology and other health disciplines to make sense of and address what she was experiencing. It was like looking for a needle in a haystack. Since then, with considerable perseverance Kirstin found many colleagues across health disciplines ‘hiding in the shadows' who are experienced in, and passionate about, working with women during this significant life stage. Listen in as we discuss: Women bearing the brunt of a lot of the pressures which come with Christmas and planning, organisation, responsibilities and more surrounding the festive season. Increased stress and anxiety at the end of the year, especially with different family structures which are now surrounding us in society. Expectations we put on ourselves that can elevate stress, anxiety, and anticipatory anxiety. How Christmas can be a perfect storm of variables. Challenging relationships and carrying unconscious load. How we often try to smooth the edges. Loneliness and grief at Christmas. Practical ways we can continue building our resilience muscles (even when it's not Christmas time). Setting boundaries and practicing how it feels, what it looks like and what it means in midlife. Dividing up our own 100% and conversations about planning, dividing up and different family dynamics. As you can see there are many topics covered and this episode is packed with practical advice and information around this time. I encourage you to follow Kirstin via her website www.allabouthercentre.com.au and Instagram @the_midlife_psychologist and @allabouthercentre Happy Christmas and New Year. I look forward to many more discussions in 2024 and hope you have a wonderful midlife, whatever that looks like for you. You can also find me on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/joclarkcoaching/ and Private Facebook Group – https://www.facebook.com/groups/womenswellnesscollective1. Here's to redefining midlife and making our next half of life even better than the first.
Before you dive in, I want to let you know that you are NOT failing, you are doing incredible!!I had the honor to speak with Sarah L Smith, she is a mother of 2 girls (4 & 5.5yo) after suffering from PMAD (Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders) that started when she was pregnant with her second daughter, mental health became something very important to her. In the middle of 2020 shortly after her, younger turned 2, she finally felt like she had climbed out from the shells of PMAD and is now a survivor!! Years of therapy helped but more than therapy her mom's community helped. More than many of them she still knows today. She also knows many moms either are not ready for therapy, don't have access to therapy, or just need another mom to support them. After fighting within herself for almost a year she shifted gears in 2022 and launched a new program called Motherhood Imperfect. At Motherhood Imperfect we are talking about all things motherhood-related and how to reclaim who you are outside of being a mom because motherhood is a verb. Outside of Sarah's mom community, learning to put herself first, journaling, affirmations, learning to forgive herself, routines, goal setting, and building her businesses were key to her being able to call herself a PMAD survivor and are all the things that are talked about inside Motherhood Imperfect. Sarah wants you to remember that you don't have to be a perfect mom, but you are the perfect mom for your kids. Humans have limited information processing abilities and cannot possibly evaluate all possible options when making a decision. However, describing people merely as irrational paints an inaccurate picture. There can be benefits to the biases we hold. Author of Optimally Irrational: The Good Reasons We Behave the Way We Do Lionel Page PhD, joins Kurt Nelson and Tim Houlihan on Behavioral Grooves Podcast to talk about his book. Lionel is a French-born economist who is currently working as the Director of the Behavioural and Economic Science Cluster at the University of Queensland in Australia. Among the topics Lionel discusses is the hedonic treadmill and how happiness is always just ahead of us. Our subjective satisfaction system is designed to keep us motivated by focusing on future goals. However, once we achieve those goals, we move on to the next. Anticipated utility and loss aversion become a powerful motivational combination. Our motivations for decisions are complex. Lisa is joined by Carmen Leal the author of I Chose You: Imperfectly Perfect Rescue Dogs and Their Humans. Lisa starts the interview by sharing something her dogs do and asks if your dog or dogs do it too. She also asks Carmen the same first question she always asks which is, "When did you love of dogs begin?"Carmen came to dogs in a unique way. Eventually she changed her mind and not only did she get a dog, she did work for a shelter and has helped thousands of dogs find homes.Carmen's book is an anthology so not only does she share her own stories, there are others as well who share stories about their dogs. For more details, see the transcript. Book a coaching session with me: HERE Years ago, before I found life coaching, I was a crossfit coach. Totally different worlds of coaching. But I was still me in both scenes. At the first gym I coached for, one of the gym owners wasn't too thrilled to have me on the team. And I felt pretty insecure. I like to be liked (who doesn't). But ultimately, I wanted the outside validation that I was a good coach, because I really put my heart into my classes. After a couple years, my family moved to Arkansas and I got a coaching gig in our new city. And in the back of my mind, as much as I missed my classes in Utah, I wondered if they were glad to have a new coach now. Perhaps one that was a little more competitive, one that was more athletic, one that fit the crossfit coach mold better. But to my astonishment, many of the members that attended my classes regularly reached out to me, and expressed how much they missed not just me and our friendship, but they missed my style of coaching. I got feedback on how much they had progressed because of the way I had taught them and ran my class. Now I don't say this to brag. But rather to illustrate, that we never really know what kind of impact we're having. The exact thing that I thought I was doing “wrong” or not good enough, was exactly what someone else needed and loved. They needed me and my unique style. It was imperfectly perfect. At the retreat, we did an activity called Mirror work, which is literally just sitting in front of a mirror, looking into your own eyes, sit and stare, then write what you see. When it was my turn, I looked into my eyes expecting some kind of cool revelation speak to me, but instead I just saw my eyes. Literally just my eyes. I saw the color, which I've always liked, but what I really noticed was that my eyes are offset and they are actually asymmetrical. One is bigger than the other. And in that moment, it didn't bother me at all, because at the same time, that I saw my asymmetrical, offset eyes, I also saw light reflecting in my eyes and it looked like stars. And again I thought, I am totally imperfect. And that's just perfect. The original definition of perfect is simply whole, or complete, not lacking. My eyes are not lacking, I have two of them, they work -> I can see, my face is complete. There is no rule that it needs to be symmetrical, no rule that eyes need to be the same size, shape or even color. They just maybe typically are. Or we think they are. But what is, just the way it is, is perfect. It is complete. It is the way it's supposed to be. We are all asymmetrical in some way. We all carry insecurities. We're a little offset somewhere But the way you are. Is exactly the way that you need to be. I'm guessing that there is something that you think you are doing “wrong”, or not good enough, is exactly what someone else needs and loves, or will truly appreciate one day. Your unique style is needed and Imperfectly Perfect. This week, find your thing - the one that you may be insecure about, but is exactly the way it needs to be, maybe because your way is blessing someone else, or because your way just is being effective. I want you to find it, and journal about your imperfect perfection. My friends, Be watchful and stay curious.

After losing 80 lbs. in search of happiness, Martina Wall still did not feel worthy of love and affection. She's not alone. Far too many people spend time working heavily on the exterior only to discover that where fulfillment lies, is within.
