When life's challenges are the toughest, inspiration comes from those who've faced the worst and come out on top. Just ask Shay Eskew, Chief Sales Office at CirclesX, a man who took on life-threatening injuries as a child and transformed them into an inspiring life as an athlete. David Kemp sat down with Eskew, Author of What the Fire Ignited, to learn more about the man who views challenges as a doorway to opportunity.Eskew's main passions are his family, a wife and five children, and iron man competitions. These are things he didn't think were possible when tragedy struck at eight. “My mom had asked me to warn my neighbors of an aggressive yellow jacket's nest they had in the ground,” Eskew said. “I recruited my friend; we walked across the street; we knocked on the door. The dad wasn't home, but the fifteen-year-old daughter was.” They showed the girl the nest. She lit a match on the nest and threw a cup of gasoline. The gasoline sprayed onto Eskew, and flames engulfed him. Life changed in an instant. And with no health insurance to cover extensive medical expenses, Eskew received a lifeline from The Cincinnati Shiners chapter, who stepped in to help.Eskew received burns on over sixty percent of his body, and he told by physicians he'd never play competitive sports again over months of treatments and surgeries. Gauntlet thrown; challenge accepted. Eskew spent the next several decades transforming himself mentally and physically into becoming an athlete. “I've learned over the years that we all cherish the things we work for, not the things given to us.”All the experiences and lessons Eskew's learned he applies to his professional life working to solve health care challenges. “I'm a big believer in investing in teams,” Eskew said. “When you have the right team and culture, you can go places.” These values led Eskew to his current sales position with CirclesX. “What we do is look at paid Medicare claims, and using our technology, we can identify third-party payers, i.e., auto and workers-comp payers that should have paid the claim that inadvertently, or by frustration, got paid by Medicare.”

Do you believe that anything is possible? This week's amazing guest, Shay Eskew, has proven that it is. As an 8-year old, Shay was severely burned on over 65% of his body and was told he could never be a competitive athlete. Now, several decades later, he lives life to the fullest and has a relentless “never quit” attitude. Shay is a team builder, coach, mentor, RCM authority, market disruptor, motivational speaker, best-selling author and proven sales leader. He's a high-energy innovator, entrepreneur, and has successfully built and sold multiple companies.  He has achieved multiple world championships, and after enduring nearly 40 surgeries, Shay is a 4-time IRONMAN, 4-time member of Team USA, 25-time IRONMAN 70.3 athlete, is ranked in the top 1% of IRONMAN worldwide, and has competed in 11 triathlon World Championships in 7 countries on all 6 continents. Equally impressive, Shay is the proud father of 5 children under 13. Shay's life is overflowing with blessings. In this episode you will hear: • I felt close to God before the race, but He was not there during the swim. • My wife will stand at the exit of the swim and tell me how many women beat me out of the water. • I was accidentally set afire by a neighbor's kid at age 8, and burned over 65% of my body. • At the University of Tennessee, I never lost a wrestling match. • I was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. • Thank God that doctors told me I'd never play sports. That was the best thing because it pissed me off enough to prove them wrong. • Many times, pain is just a state of mind. • When I started walking in the hallway of my school – there was complete silence. • If people are gonna make fun of me, I'm gonna beat ‘em to the punch. • There's no reason to blame society. You just gotta make the most of it. You just gotta ask yourself what else can I do that I never thought possible? • The hardest thing is watching your kid suffer knowing you can't do anything to fix it. • The more chances I've taken, the more time I put myself out there, the more opportunities have presented themselves. • Everything I went through prepared me for who I am in life. • On a campus of 30,000 people, nobody looked like me. They remember who you are. • We all struggle, we all face adversity, we've all been tempted to quit. We've all said God, why me? How am I gonna get through this? • Once you know that somebody else has not only been what you've been through, and not only survived but thrived… That's Impactful. • The things that we cherish are the things we bust our butt to get. • Everybody's out there racing. It's not to win, but to finish. To finish is to win.

BRINK OF GREATNESS

“I was going to redefine what was possible, I was no longer going to be defined as the burn kid,” Shay Eskew explained. The story begins on October 4, 1982 when Shay was just eight years old, and his friend Jeff, was 7. Shay's mom had asked him to go across the street to warn their neighbor that they had an aggressive yellow jackets nest in the yard. The previous day, it had swarmed his entire bicycle. He walked across the street and knocked on the door. Their dad wasn’t home, but the fifteen-year-old daughter was. Shay proceeded to tell her about the aggressive yellow jackets nest. As they walked down the driveway to look at the hole in the ground, you could see the yellow jackets flying in and out of the nest. The young lady then asked if Shay and his friend could help get rid of them? To which Shay responded yes. As they were watching the yellow jackets 10 to 15 feet away, she grabbed a match and threw it down in the hole and nothing happened. She then instantaneously grabbed a cup of gasoline, and threw it at the hole. It splashed on the right side of Shay's body and his friend, Jeff, on the left side. She struck the match. In an instance, they were engulfed in flames. In Shay Eskew's words: "Originally, I was burned on 35% of my body, but I had a lot of infections set in. My ear became badly infected, so they had to amputate my right ear. They had to take skin grafts from my legs to use for my shoulder and back. When they harvested skin from my thighs, the dug to deep so it was like 3RD Degree burns. So, they had to take skin off the back of my legs to fix the front of my legs. It has been a series of setbacks and challenges, but they told me that I would never be able to play competitive sports again. My right arm was severely melted to my side. It took me three years to lift my arm over my head. It took three years to hold my head up straight. During that time, I wore a custom orthotic brace for my face, neck and my side. A pressure fitted garment suit that went from my ankle to neck to my wrists. I wore all the braces and suit for three years. I had to learn to write left handed to complete the 3rd and 4th grade. I played baseball once I got out of the hospital. The only way to throw to first base was to throw side-arm. My dad was the coach, so he put me at second base, so I had the shortest distance to throw to first base. I was always thinking, what would it take to be normal again."  The story continues on the Brink of Greatness Podcast… The Next Leap Forward The story of Shay Eskew is one for the ages friends. As you listen to his journey, you'll be both intrigued and inspired. You will find yourself standing and cheering him on as he takes all of us to task on what it takes to thrive no matter the circumstances! We are all faced with adversity on some level in our daily lives. It is part of being human and a societal condition of mankind. Society will not always be your friend, and at times will be your enemy. You must learn to rise above. Most of us will face hardship both personally and professionally. What seems to shape a person is not so much the type of crisis but rather how it is handled. How is it that some people seem to weather the storms better than others? How do some stay optimistic and productive after a setback? Whatever your reference point, know that it is within your power to not only neutralize the consequences, but craft the outcome to your advantage. Here are my 7 tips on how to embrace adversity and make it an advantage in your life: Society will not always be your friend, and at times will be your enemy. Learn to rise above. Being at the wrong place at the wrong time can destroy everything you’ve worked for. Your discernment is vital. Stay centered no matter the distractions around you. Much of your daily intake will not aide you in accomplishing your goals. The advancement of communications in society today will both distract you and aide you.

Shay is an All American and World ranked triathlete, burn survivor with scars over 65% of his body and is a sought out national motivational speaker. Despite being told he'd never compete in sports again at the age of 8, Shay is living testament to "Anything is Possible": 4x Ironman, 4x member of Team USA, ranked top 2% of Ironmen worldwide and has competed in 8 triathlon world championships, including the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii. His mantra has always been to not merely be a "finisher" but to be a "competitor." Last year, he finished 21st at the International Triathlon Sprint World Championships - all of this despite not being able to sweat on 1/3 of his body due to his scars and suffering from severe dehydration during each race. Shay's story is a parent's nightmare - an innocent 8 year old set afire with gasoline by a neighbor's child. The severity of his burns resulted in the amputation of his right ear, years of rehab to regain use of his right arm after being permanently melted to his side, learning how to write left handed to resume attending school and the wearing of plastic orthotic braces for 3 years - including 35 surgeries over 30 years. Always the first to make light of his situation, Shay shares how having a detachable prosthetic ear can be quite entertaining, even when it pops off at unpredictable times. His message underscores we all face adversity, some physical, some mental, but "everyone has a story" and it is how we embrace adversity that defines who we are. Shay truly believes getting severely burned as a child was a blessing and served as a motivator to excel in athletics and become a top 1% income producer. It's hard to imagine a kid who cried himself to sleep at night for years due to being compared to Freddy Krueger would one day be an extremely successful sales executive. "It's all about being memorable" Shay tells his audiences. Shay is well-known in the national triathlon community. He was selected as 1 of 6 nationally most inspiriting stories in the 2012 Ironman Kona Inspired contest and featured during the NBC Broadcast of the 2012 Ironman World Championships. He was also featured as the amateur male athlete in the 2012 Ironman 70.3 World Championships and as a feature cover story "Forged by Fire" in the 2012 USA Triathlon Olympic Preview issue. Shay is also a sponsored triathlete and a member of the Ironman Foundation/Newton Running Triathlon Ambassador team.
