POPULARITY
In previous episodes of Unlawful Killing, we've heard and talked about loved ones who have died at the hands of the state, but rarely do we actually get to hear from those who have died. These people were also poets, musicians, artists and writers. After digging out some incredible material from INQUEST's archives, we'd like to remember these artists by sharing some of their work. As there's so much in the archives, we only have enough time to talk about a few of the works, including art from Smiley Culture, Emily Hartley, Agnes McDonald, Matty Sheldrick, Jimmy Heather-Hayes, and Joe Black. All these artists are from different parts of the country, different ages, making art in different decades and at different life stages but what unites these artistic voices is the fact that they've each died at the hands of the state.'Police Officer', Smiley Culture © Fashion RecordsEmbalmed (w1b0's Alternative Method of Preservation) © Nexus 23Transform (Beatprozessor's Dirty Bass Transform) © Nexus 23Thanks to Adjoa Andoh, Ruth Bundey and Alfie Neill for their readings.Find out more about the artists featured:Smiley Culture – NTS Radio Page Matty Sheldrick's website - www.mattyzak.com Joe Black's Soundcloud - https://soundcloud.com/nexus23 Jim Heather-Hayes - https://history.inquest.org.uk/case-profiles/jim-heather-hayes/ Emily Hartley - https://history.inquest.org.uk/case-profiles/emily-hartley/ Agnes McDonald - https://www.inquest.org.uk/agnes-mcdonald-conclusion Hosted on Acast. Marking the 40th anniversary of the 1981 Brixton Uprising, Stance explores the moments leading up to the uprising and the activism that inspired it, their connections to the Windrush scandal, and the 2021 Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill and subsequent #KillTheBill protests in Bristol. Looking at the uprising through film, academia, literature, and music, we explore political activism through poetry with globally renowned Jamaican poet, Linton Kwesi Johnson. Stance delves into Soundsystem Culture and the Smiley Culture collaboration with founder of Code 7 youth charity, DJ and musician Asher Senator. Novelist Alex Wheatle shares his firsthand account of being part of the uprising, going to prison and how it led to the collaborative partnership with director Steve McQueen in producing the hit drama series, Small Axe. We chat with Queen of Lovers Rock, Carroll Thompson about her record-breaking album, Hopelessly in Love released in 1981, and her campaigning work around the Windrush Scandal. But how far have we actually come? We discuss policy and fair policing with Dr. Rebekah Delsol of StopWatch. To end, Stance looks to new wave Croydon born singer-songwriter Rachel Chinouriri, and her upcoming EP Four° In Winter. This week I've visited a movie that doesn't often see the light of day - Absolute Beginners. Featuring a cast as diverse as David Bowie, Patsy Kensit, Robbie Coltrane, Smiley Culture and Lionel Blair, the film explores 1950s Soho and the race riots of Notting Hill and White City. Making a guest appearance is Tim Worthington, writer and podcaster behind the nostalgia goldmine at "Looks Unfamiliar". He can also be found on Twitter here https://twitter.com/outonbluesix. The number one song at the time of the UK release was the Comic Relief version of Living Doll, featuring Cliff Richard and The Young Ones. Good timing, as The Young Ones first aired on BBC TV 35 years ago this month. Please take the time to share this podcast on social media and rate/review on iTunes - this helps grow the audience and reach new potential guests. Thank you.
Miles Davis' "So What" is one of the most famous compositions in jazz. Ian McCann explores its many incarnations, from Ronny Jordan's funk hit to Smiley Culture's musings on racial unrest. This is the latest episode of the syndicated FuseBox Radio Broadcast with DJ Fusion & Jon Judah for the week of May 8, 2013 (a flashback episode originally broadcast on March 16, 2011) with some new and classic Hip-Hop & Soul Music, news and commentary. Our extended commentary that week focused on the tragic situation in Japan due to it's recent earthquake + tsunami, passing & impacts of music artists Nate Dogg (major part of the West Coast "G-Funk" Hip-Hop era with his singing, hooks, etc.), reggae artist Smiley Culture, Mark Adams (bassist for Funk/R&B group Slave) and electronic synthesizer visionary Tsutomu Katoh (founder of Korg) along with some more diverse topics here and there. We had a great extended interview with long-time entertainment industry executive Paul Porter of Industry Ears (http://www.IndustyEars.com), a consortium of entertainment and broadcast industry professionals with more than 60 years of experience dedicated to revealing truth and promoting justice in media. Some of the topics that we touched base on included the consolidation of all media outlets & how that effects the entertainment + information the masses get, what's REALLY the deal with 'net neutrality, what media outlets are truly "black owned" in the mainstream, the politics of the music industry behind the scenes, the importance of the Black Entertainment community getting into media policy issues and lots more! Due to our extended interview, new Black Agenda Report, Black University Radio Network and (B.U.R.N.) Direct EFX segments will be on next week's syndicated FuseBox Radio Broadcast episode.
