The History Of Reggaetón, Reggae and Dancehall as told by Maxine Isis Stowe, the former Columbia Records executive, sits at the intersection of Reggaetón, Reggae and Dancehall. She played a pivotal role in signing acts like Shy Guy singer Diana King, who she had a similar vision for her as Rihanna achieved, if only Diana could have let go off the small island influences and assimilate her sound more into American pop and sing more like fellow Sony artist Mariah Carey. “When I saw Rihanna break through, I thought that was what I had in mind for Diana. I would say that Diana's reluctance to be fully Americanized was her limitation because her voice was big enough, but culturally she couldn't let go,” Stowe said. She is also known for her significant contributions to the development of dancehall in the 90s and early 2000s in the US, serving as A&R and executive producer for several chart-topping hits and albums, resulting in over 5 million in album and single sales. This includes Ini Kamoze's “Here Comes The Hotstepper,” Mad Cobra's “Flex,” “Bad Boys Soundtrack,” “Cool Runnings Soundtrack,” "Chant Down Babylon" album by Bob Marley, Half Way Tree by Damian Marley and more projects that have achieved Platinum and Gold status in the US. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/worldmusicviews/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/worldmusicviews/support

On this episode of Creepy Kids Radio, I celebrate the release of "Best Friend" by slamming 24oz Tacate's and reading some of my most unhinged movie reviews. Why? I think I tried to convince you all that it's a clever connection to me filming a (no budget) music video, but I really think that I just wanted to pop off online and needed an alibi. I also talk about seeing "The Northman" and explore what it means to be a "man". And then, yes... read more reviews. BUT: There is most definitely unreleased Noirre songs at the end of this episode if that's your type of thing! Cheeeeeers. Ever wake up cotton-mouthed, feverish and naked wrapped in a shower curtain as you lay in the fetal position inside of a bathtub knowing you probably did some morally questionable things while simultaneously wondering where the hell your girlfriend is at? She probably went home with Borgore after the club last night. Epitomizing the hashtag #NoFucksGiven, the Israeli-born master of musical mayhem, government name Asaf Borger, has been ravaging electronic culture one bass-heavy, booty-clapping bonanza at a time. His decade-long list of accomplishments includes heading up his own successful label, Buygore Records, headlining sold out shows to record-breaking crowds at iconic events such as Tomorrowland, Made In America, Ultra and EDC Las Vegas, hosting an internationally syndicated weekly SiriusXM radio series “The Borgore Show”, and a milieu of collaborative bangers alongside fellow ratchet cohorts like Miley Cyrus, Waka Flocka Flame and Diplo. Hailed as one of the most mind-melting dubstep artists of his generation, the 27-year-old classically trained producer, song writer, and DJ's sonic evolution has been as enticing as his surreal multi-sensory show productions. Like any artist with a widely recognized household name, Borgore remains self-intuitive and motivated to pioneer what audiences don't even know they like yet. After countless accolades and globe-trotting memories, the next step in Borgore's career will see him move away from the trap and dubstep vibes fans are used to as he delves more heavily into breeding a new variation within hip hop. In a recent interview with Miami New Times, Borgore best explains his trajectory of growth as a culmination of passion and new direction: "We've been working on an EP, me and some of my favorite rappers…I want to write songs rather than write bangers. I want to be true to myself as an artist and create the music I want to create." From death metal to dubstep to hip hop, Borgore fans can rest assured that his production efforts will continue to lead the charge with the same high energy, potty mouth charisma that continues to resonate with so many. Stay tuned for forthcoming mass destruction. ------------------ Tracklist: 1. Diplo, Pritam, Mohit Chauhan - Phurrr 2. Fifth Harmony, Skrillex, Poo Bear - Angel 3. Borgore - Savages 4. 90's - 2000 Mix CD Artists like Bounty Killer, Beenie Man, Mad Cobra, Buju Banton, General Degree, Red Rat, Goofy, Chrissy D, Buccaneer, Shaggy, Wayne Wonder, etc.
DL: https://www.mediafire.com/folder/utb0s25amcaic/ENCHANTING_(Dancehall_Mix%2C_Iray_juggling_his_mind_pt._2) Once more this Mix is meant to tell a story. In short: a Story starting with an affair that seems to be love when Mad Cobra says „Girl flex, it’s time to have sex“ and Lady Saw responds that she wants to give it to him „hardcore“ with her „heels on“... Alaine (the most loving part of this whole mix :-*) soon after that realizes that this is the real thing as she feels like she „melts away“ like a candle is melting wax. The whole love soon turns out in cheating games... and both partners seem to lose control... Chris Martin feels somehow disappointed („if you dont trust me now, you wont trust me later“) as Ce’cile talks about breaking up and that she had even prefered the times when she was his sidechick... He knows that it’s all wrong. But this „other girl“ (T’Nez) keeps teasing him... The „Cheating Games“ (Mavado & Raine Seville) do not seem to take an end... He even ends up in praying to god to help him „not to let me cheat on my girlfriend“ ... without success... The whole thing escalates when she starts cheating on him too as revenge („wait till him left the yard!“, Ce’Cile)... His begging for „will you take me back?!?! I will do my best to never get caught again“ (Chris Martin) has no more influence on the outturn... Probably wasn’t really the real love that was expected: „Gweh! Pack your things me a leave you!“ (Ishawna). After that the mix is going through all kinds of wild explicit stories betweeen man and woman... A mix that should prove that explicit dancehall isn’t always full of stupidity but also is able to tell stories in a creative, sometimes even charming way. Explicit dancehall doesn’t need to result in pure slackness. QQ for example thinks he could „fall in love again“ just because her „PumPum blessed“ and Ishawna loves „how yu mek me feel“ as he got „the perfect mic fi sing pon“.... As we are talking about singing: „lalalala – make your pum pum happy, make your pum pum smile, make your pum pum sing sometime - lalalala“ (Vybz Kartel). But is „I love you as much as I love f##k“ (Popcaan) really enough? Probably not... As Ishawna even calls for „Restraining Order“... But still she is the „only gyal him want“ (Tiana). Somebody who was listening to me recording the mix once said „If you want it or not, this sounds like ‚lover’s rock à la 2016’“ – well, think about it! OK, probably it’s not only 2016, as we will also make an excrusion to the earlier times when Shabba Ranks, Beenie Man or Lady Saw were ruling the place... Even T.O.K. do their part and make clear what kind of lover she wants. This mix is not slackness. And check yourself how the story could finish... Sometimes you can even – after all - manage to „fall in love again“ (Mr. Vegas) and feel unexpected love „falling on me like the rain“ (Alaine) – sang once more by the only reggae singer with a certificate for love songs. Have fun with the mix and try to follow the story. RECORDED ON: NOV 24, 2016 AT: Sunhill Studio, Kriens

In 1992 I was a few years into hosting Reggae Music Forward, a weekly reggae radio show on KXLU Los Angeles. The program focused on new dancehall and modern roots music, with some foundation and old cuts in thrown in as well. But 1992 was also a turning point for reggae in general; it was a peak moment of the newly ascendant dancehall era and major American labels had been on a dancehall and reggae artist signing binge for a few years. Tiger, Mad Cobra, Supercat, Shabba Ranks and others all cut major label deals and their music began being remixed and merged with other urban genres. Hence, a good portion of this broadcast features reggae-hip-hop remixes that were popular at the time. These tracks are mixed back to back, using the station’s rudimentary belt-drive Techniques turntables. The blends are not all perfect, but live mixing was an innovation back then, especially on college radio. The set was recorded to cassette and I have edited out the breaks and back announcing. I believe this set is a good representation of not only the prominent styles of the time, but also the strong ties with hip-hop. It’s amazing to think that “Murder She Wrote” – which is possibly the world’s most recognizable dancehall anthem -- had only just come out. Bogle-dance rhythms like Shabba’s “Ting A Ling” were dominant. At the same time, roots singers like Cocoa Tea and Garnet Silk were starting to revive the dormant melodic reggae scene. All in all, this is a snapshot of ragga 92-style, blasting from the Los Angeles nighttime airwaves. I hope you enjoy this radio selections, and I plan to bring a few more from this era forward this year. TIME OUT CHICAGO MAGAZINE Disco Unusual Social Club DJ Mixed By Lono Brazil(Disco Unusual Social Club) Clubs Time Out Chicago / Issue 198 : Dec 11–17, 2008 He’s so Unusual Lono Brazil revives the spirit of the Loft in Bucktown. LOFTY GOALS Expert party-thrower Lono Brazil digs disco. Photo: Marzena Abrahamik The most reliably tasteful dance party in the city, Disco Unusual Social Club, has been running for just over a year now. Indie kids pack the compact Danny’s Tavern floor to the distinctive bass lines of disco edits while DJ Lono Brazil blows whistles and passes out tambourines. Things get a little nuts. “I’ve been lucky. Most of the things I’ve dreamt about, I’ve been able to do,” says fortysomething Gold Coaster Brazil without exaggeration. Raised in the South Shore/Windsor Park section of Chicago, Brazil spent much of the ’80s as a downtown New York personality, throwing parties with Pete Rock and Red Alert for Russell Simmons and Def Jam Records in New York, England and Tokyo. At the suggestion of his chums the Beastie Boys, Capitol-EMI hired him as a marketing director, then label executive. When he wasn’t exploring the dance halls of Kingston with Mad Cobra or working in the studio with Foxy Brown, he was picking up prominent DJ and modeling gigs. Brazil’s latest venture, the monthly DUSC at Danny’s, comes out of his life as a fervent clubber—which began at Tree of Life Health Spa’s disco on 95th and Jeffery in 1981. Brazil worked his way to the Warehouse (U.S. Studio) where Frankie Knuckles was making electronic-dance history. “That did it for me. I found my place and my music,” Brazil says. In mid-’80s Manhattan, Brazil stayed up all night at the Loft and indulged in dance marathons at the Paradise Garage. Over the course of the ’90s, Brazil was a resident at Tokyo megaclub Gold’s and hosted the popular Global Village radio show, bringing Fela Kuti and Nuyorican Soul to Los Angeles listeners on Monday mornings. Yet, he considers deejaying only a sideline. Back in Chicago, Brazil returned to party throwing with the Urban Renewal Project at Sonotheque, focusing on Afro, Latin and nu-jazz. Burned out on hip-hop a decade ago, he’s based DUSC on a passion for the free-ranging underground sounds of his early club years. He even sports a David & Nicky & Larry & Frankie T-shirt celebrating his DJ muses. It’s not just disco music; it’s the disco era he’s after. Brazil cites David Mancuso, the curator of seminal ’70s spot the Loft, as a role model. “I don’t say I’m a DJ; I say I’m a music host—the music, the place, the people are all a part of it,” he says. Like Mancuso, Brazil looks for an eclectic mix of music-focused people, not the look-at-me crowd that fancies bottle-service joints. At boho neighborhood joint Danny’s, he’s found his niche. The vinyl-oriented programmers there even allow Brazil to use his Serato and laptop rig. Paradise Garage great Larry Levan’s free-ranging style provides a stylistic sonic template—Brazil spins vintage dance music, mostly pre-’84 material, not just disco but also Italo, mutant disco and classics from the Prelude and West End labels, along with disco edits and nu-disco from Lee Douglas, perhaps with an Obama speech layered on top. Like Levan, he doesn’t fuss over beat matching. The night’s overarching mantra comes courtesy of Mancuso himself, says Brazil: “Disco just means come ready to dance.” Sweat it out at Disco Unusual Social Club every 2nd Saturday at 10pm at Danny’s in Bucktown and venues around the world.
Jamaican producers may be pressing less and less vinyl but the island still churned out around two thousand 7" singles last year and these are our favourite rowdy ones. In the words of a Heatwave regular who got a sneak preview of the mix: "Who am I? The dancehall king" A look back at 2007 enables you to go from the filthy, nasty but undeniably inspirational sex talk of Beenie Man, Chamelion and 'Sweet' C to the sparse vocal angriness of that old Elephant bloke and then surrender to the leg-lifting power of the Matterhorn man. And you're just getting started. "Everybody start tek way yourself. Follow the riddim and tek way yourself" What jumps out when you listen to these tracks all together is the control each artist commands. You feel at their mercy, and they're merciless. Whether it's the riddims coming in that you know you know - but you don't know you know until you hear the drop, and then you're shaking your shit so hard you're not sure what you know any more - or the fierceness of the lyrics that are flying at you like you're in a video game and you can't move quick enough so you just start letting them hit you. Just. Let. Go. "Have you heard about that little boy in Jamaica?" Militaristic beats dropping left, right and centre make you feel like you're a kind of bashment brigadier going over the top of the trench. It's weird when you've hated so much of what Shaggy has put out in the past to hear him rip the arsehole out of the Heathen riddim. I thought there were no lyrics that could excuse Angel. "Return of the Indian. Truths and rights weh we come to tell the nation" Like most years, 2007 leaves you with the perplexing problem of Sean Paul. It basically comes down to the fact that your legs and hips and arse have more respect for his voice than your brain. It's a bit like when Elephant Man provides the sting in the tail of the whole mix with Three Step on the Madness riddim. You'd like to sit down and have a rest, drink a cup of tea or maybe work on your New Year's resolutions, but it all just has you reaching for the rewind button yet again.
