Reel Britannia - a very British podcast about very British movies...with just a hint of professionalism This week, Scott and Steven are joined by Mark from The Good The Bad and The Odd podcast to chat about, not Hammer horror this time, but Julien Temple's musical from 1986 starring Patsy Kensit and David Bowie Absolute Beginners (1986) A musical adaptation of Colin MacInnes' novel about life in late 1950s London. Nineteen-year-old photographer Colin is hopelessly in love with model Crepe Suzette, but her relationships are strictly connected with her progress in the fashion world. So Colin gets involved with a pop promoter and tries to crack the big time. Meanwhile, racial tension is brewing in Colin's Notting Hill housing estate... linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema This September is Masterclass month at Catching Up On Cinema! September is the anniversary month of Catching Up On Cinema, and this year we're celebrating the completion of 5 years of weekly podcasting. For this year's Masterclass, Trevor and Kyle will be reviewing all 4 films in Richard Donner's Lethal Weapon series of films. This week, Kyle and Trevor review the bombastic first sequel in the series, Lethal Weapon 2 (1989)! Arriving in theaters in July of 1989, one of the more memorable and profitable summers in Hollywood history, Richard Donner's Lethal Weapon 2 (1989) is often regarded as the finest entry in the series. Upping the ante in terms of the scale of its action and quickness of its pace, Lethal Weapon 2 is a fantastic sequel that does all that a studio could hope an action sequel could accomplish. Though Shane Black does not return as screenwriter, Lethal Weapon 2 looks every bit of its $30 million budget, but more importantly, it honors the legacy of the characters presented in the first film, carrying their characterizations forward in meaningful and interesting ways. While virtually all of the familiar faces introduced in the first film return here in Lethal Weapon 2, the film features Joe Pesci, making his franchise debut as comic relief character, Leo Getz. Additionally, Lethal Weapon 2 features Joss Ackland and Derrick O'Connor in delightfully slimy villainous roles, and well Patsy Kensit as a pivotal new love interest for Mel Gibson's character of Martin Riggs. Exceeding the first films intensity and scope of action, and tuning up the volume and tempo of its comic antics, Lethal Weapon 2 is a fantastic sequel that is, at the very least, equal to its predecessor; though by all rights it very well may be the very best in a truly outstanding series. The dream team are BACK and what a way to start the new series, as Grainne and Chantal welcome host of the fantastic 'Crushed' podcast, Margaret Cabourn-Smith to the show! And Margaret certainly doesn't disappoint when it comes to the couple she's brought to the table, the creators of Cool Britannia themselves, Patsy Kensit and Liam Gallagher. Although after hearing this, you might decide that they are definitely / maybe, not as cool as you might have thought back in 1995. Or perhaps it was a more innocent time, you decide. Management however will add the disclaimer that neither Patsy OR Liam were directly responsible for the invasion of any country... It's GREAT to be back! X Learn more about your ad choices. As it has been three weeks since I posted, I decided to make a podcast, write it and post it as quickly as I could. I did not know what story to make a podcast about but I had some photographs of documents that I had taken at the National Archives and choose the shortest one, the one with least photos to see how quickly I could write and post. The storey I chose, I original thought obscure, but found that a film had been made about it in 1990 called Chicago Joe and the Showgirl starring Kiefer Sutherland , Emily Lloyd and Patsy Kensit. Then I found out that George Orwell had commented on the murder. However, there did not seem to be any podcasts on what was called the 'Cleft chin murder'.It took me 14 hours from start to finish to make this podcast, researching, writing and recording. That is why I am calling it a Punk Podcast. The characters in this podcast are shallow, obsessed with image and Hollywood films. Their lives are cheap and they think that life is cheap. In recent podcasts it has been suggested that it is easy to get away with a murder during a time of war, however these murderers were too incompetent to take advantage of wartime. As usual it is low fi and I hesitate over words etc..

According to Dan's Uncle Andy, it's the most wonderful time of the year. Whilst this may be the case for the population at large, there's a distinct lack of Christmas cheer around the Saintees at present. You know what though? Sam and Dan reckon they'll might just be able to turn those festive frowns right upside down, as we bring to you Episode 44 of The Dogger Saints Podcast! We will admit that it doesn't start off so cheery, as we have to dissect not one, but two defeats for the Saints, who aren't so much goal-shy at present but goal-hermits at present, and look at just what needs to be done to somehow rescue this faltering season (spoiler: we don't know). You say features? Well even if you didn't, we're going to pretend that you did, because we've got them by the truckload. We speak to Mike as he becomes the second person to have a stab at deciphering Wendy, we play mibbe aye, mibbe nae at The Royal and we have an utterly ludicrous visit to Govan for this week's Club Shop of Shame. We also head the pleasure of chatting to former Saints skipper Davie Irons for this weeks Headline Act, and what a fantastic chat it was as we discussed Davie's time at Saints, injury problems, management....including Gretna and THAT final day of the season. Danta Claus! Christmas shopping with Sam! Patsy Kensit getting it! We've got it all, along with a look forward to festive fixtures, and we'd love for you to join us for wee pre-Christmas spirit lifter. Get there!
The result of our sequels poll was close, but Riggs and Murtaugh are just irresistible as that perfect buddy cop combo. Directed by Richard Donner and starring Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Joe Pesci, Patsy Kensit, Joss Ackland and Derrick O'Connor. This is a favorite of both the hosts this week If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, become a supporter. www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesback Plot Summary: Riggs and Murtaugh are trying to take down some drug dealers but they turn out to be not run-of-the-mill drug dealers; they have automatic weapons and helicopters. Eventually, they grab one of their vehicles and find a million dollars worth of gold coins or Krugerrands in the trunk. Later Murtaugh is threatened by the men they're pursuing. That's when the Captain reassigns them to protect a man named Leo Getz who is supposed to testify in a big case. When they get to where Leo is, someone tries to kill him and that's when they learn he laundered half a billion dollars worth of drug money. He then takes them to a place he once went to and that's when the people there start shooting at them. Later when they come back with back up they learn that the men work for the South African consulate and have diplomatic immunity. They deduce that they are the ones they were looking for, but because they have diplomatic immunity they can't do anything. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thevhsstrikesback/support
Episode 268: The Crew's watering their rub (condom) tree while watching Richard Donner's wild Lethal Weapon 2. Mel Gibson and Danny Glover are back in action from the first frame (the films starts mid-car chase). Joe Pesci is a welcomed addition to the cast…. ok, ok, ok, don't eat the tuna at Subway. The first installment is a great action film, but this sequel is funny and entertaining with loads of memorable set pieces. And an action film is only has good as it's villains, and it's so fun to hate these aryan/racist South Africans. Absolute Beginners! If you were part of the British film scene in the mid-80s, you knew it as the coolest project in development: a lavish, experimental musical from punk director Julien Temple, adapted from Colin MacInnes's cult novel, with a cast including Patsy Kensit, Sade, Edward Tudor-Pole, Bruno from Strictly and - standing atop the film as though it were a giant globe - David Bowie. Then the film came out, and nobody went to see it. A film made in the 80s about the 50s with stars from all decades, it confused people at the time, but has since amassed a noteworthy cult following. This week on Pop Screen, Graham and Mick reassess Temple's epic folly, asking: is it that bad? Which of its stars escape with their dignity intact? And have you, or anyone else you know, ever had it blue? Sadly, the days when creative young men could live in a squat with a troupe of tap-dancing jazzbos has passed. Today, you need money to survive, and if you give a little to our Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/thegeekshow) you get a lot, including one exclusive Pop Screen episode per month. Episode 70: Pet Shop Boys - Introspective (1988) Part 2 As you may recall, in the previous episode, Brian and Sarah were joined by Andrew Dineley (Classic Pop Magazine contributor, host of the "Art on your Sleeve" podcast, and world-renowned Pet-Head!) to discuss the Pet Shop Boys album Introspective. Thankfully, Andrew agreed to call again --otherwise, this second part of this discussion would have been very lopsided. Part 3 - Track by Track, Continued As the trio flip the record to discuss the three tracks on side two, a lot of interesting topics come up-- some expected, and others, not so much. Of course, having a graphic designer and self-confessed Pet Head on the show means there's talk about sleeve covers, including limited edition 12-inch singles, and Andrew admits he valiantly tried collecting as many of them as possible. Also, on the subject of admitting things, Brian admits he has quite the crush on Eighth Wonder-era Patsy Kensit. From that springs a discussion of two things she has in common with Pretenders lead singer Chrissie Hynde. Other subjects mentioned include babies, French civil unrest, babysitting, the Mix-Master Phil Harding, "fantastically pretentious" lyrics, Chris Lowe vocals, and-- in what's sure to be a one-time occurrence-- Willie Nelson! And, Brian's trifecta is achieved-- he gets to talk about James Bond AND Batman while discussing pop music! I'm Not Scared Always on My Mind/In My House It's Alright Part 4 - Extra Credit As the discussion of Introspective wraps up, the three hosts look deeper into a question they've touched on in both episodes: Did the lower chart positions of this album's and future releases correspond to the quality of the duo's output? Part 5 - Final Review and Rating Brian decides to go first with his final review and record-adapter rating. Sarah's lack of personal history with this album makes her a bit of a wild card in the review and rating category. Finally, comes the review and rating everyone's been waiting for: the one from Andrew Dineley. Will he go all out and give Introspective a 5 out of 5? There's only one way to find out! This week I've visited a movie that doesn't often see the light of day - Absolute Beginners. Featuring a cast as diverse as David Bowie, Patsy Kensit, Robbie Coltrane, Smiley Culture and Lionel Blair, the film explores 1950s Soho and the race riots of Notting Hill and White City. Making a guest appearance is Tim Worthington, writer and podcaster behind the nostalgia goldmine at "Looks Unfamiliar". He can also be found on Twitter here https://twitter.com/outonbluesix. The number one song at the time of the UK release was the Comic Relief version of Living Doll, featuring Cliff Richard and The Young Ones. Good timing, as The Young Ones first aired on BBC TV 35 years ago this month. Please take the time to share this podcast on social media and rate/review on iTunes - this helps grow the audience and reach new potential guests. Thank you.
