Becoming – Why Deion Sanders Left Jackson State | Dr. Umar Johnson Talks Deion Sanders Leaving the HBCUIn this episode of Becoming with Angelina Watkins, she highlights the interview with Dr. Umar Johnson on the Breakfast Club and his opinion on Deion Sanders leaving Jackson State to coach at the University of Colorado.Dr. Umar Johnson was very clear and passionate about his thoughts on Deion Sanders leaving Jackson State. In his opinion, Deion abused, used and exploited the HBCU for his own selfish wants. Deion Sanders had an opportunity to start a movement that could revive and save many of the HBCUs that are struggling to stay open due to funding. It is no question that Deion Sanders made a difference at Jackson State. He help the football team achieve and accomplish what they have never in history been able to accomplish. He opened the door for Jackson State to be a desirable collage for football recruits. He guided the school to an undefeated season for the 1st time in history. They won back-to-back Southwestern Athletic Conference championships. But was there more for him to do for the HBCUs collectively? As Dr. Umar Johnson points out, Deion Sanders could have started a movement that would draw other NFL greats to coach and other celebrities to pull their financial resources together to create a funding source for the HBCUs to thrive. Deion Sanders leaving Jackson State was selfish and he sold out for money. Was it Deion Sanders duty to be the catalyst and spearhead a movement to save the HBCUs? Or was the HBCU a stepping stone for a much bigger plan that God is leading him to?Listen and them comment below your thoughts? Was he wrong for leaving Jackson State to pursue his dreams?Episode Outline[00:00] A sneak peak into the episode[00:59] Music intro[01:07] Introduction [02:03] Dr. Umar on the Breakfast Club[03:13] A Movement[06:21] What's God's Plan[10:17] A Stepping Stone[15:23] It's an Us Problem[18:54] What's Your Part [21:43] ClosingWhere you are is not where you have to be. Hey Identifier, #deionsanders #football #greatest https://footballscoop.com/news/deion-sanders-coach-prime-jackson-state-espn-gameday-hbcu-swac-nfl-snoop-dogg Deion Sanders had the usual complaints of a football coach surrounding his team's red-zone execution, some opportunities left on the field in its homecoming win against non-conference foe Campbell University and some other elements of Jackson State's seventh-straight win of the 2022 season and its 18th in 20 games. “We gotta run the ball,” Sanders said on the Southwestern Athletic Conference's weekly coaches' Zoom. “We gotta be more aggressive with the run. “Everyone knows we've got a quarterback that can spin it and wide receivers that can go get it. That's pretty much the formula. It's just attitude there, the ‘Red Zone' is straight-on attitude. … We just gotta want it a lot more than they want it.” Then Coach Prime once again embraced his platform to try to shine a greater light on not only JSU and its athletics programs but also Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Freddie Murray is entering his sixth year on the coaching staff for the Grambling State University women's basketball program and his fourth year at the helm as head coach. In 2017-18, with the expectations at a program all-time high, Murray guided the Lady Tiger program to a 19-win season as Grambling State went 19-14 overall and 13-5 in SWAC play. Grambling State enjoyed the national spotlight in early January when Shakyla Hill became the fourth NCAA Division I women's basketball player to record a quadruple double. The Lady Tigers ended the regular season as third seed in the SWAC Women's Basketball Tournament as GSU defeated Alcorn State, Texas Southern and Southern to win the SWAC Championship for the first time since 1999. In the NCAA Division I Tournament, Grambling State fell No. 2 Baylor to cap a great season for the Lady Tigers. Shakyla Hill and Jazmin Boyd were named to the All-SWAC postseason teams, with Hill earning SWAC Tournament MVP honors. Coach Murray began his college-coaching career at his alma mater Jackson State University in Jackson, Miss., first as a volunteer assistant with the men's program in 1999 and later as a graduate assistant coach (2001-2003). There he helped guide the Lady Tigers to the 2003 Southwestern Athletic Conference regular season title and finish with 23 wins that season. He also assisted in coaching 6'7 center Amie Williams who would the SWAC Defensive Player of the Year and a first-team all-conference player in 2003. Murray, a Jackson, Mississippi native, holds a bachelor's degree in Business Management from Jackson State (1990). #Gramfam #Sports #Grambling #Basketball #STWFmedia sportstalkwithfriends.com

You can find an HBCU in Atlanta or you can find an HBCU in California. But there's something about the South that seems to appeal to people of color. I'm joined by Curtis Burroughs (JSU) and Charles Helom (Alcorn) to discuss the Southwestern Athletic Conference, better known as the SWAC by those familiar with HBCU schools. We discuss what made attending a SWAC school different than the larger, public four year colleges like the University of Mississippi or LSU. We chat about dormitory life, homecoming week, Greek life, the rivalries between the schools (sports and band) and more! It's a fun discussion that takes us back down memory lanes at times about college life. Enjoy this Q-on-2 podcast with two guys who share a special rivalry that will never be broken thanks to the longstanding traditions of the SWAC. Show #880 www.Talk2Q.com

Original air date: September 2, 2020 The ongoing challenges related to COVID-19 have forced the college athletics industry into uncharted waters. With recent announcements of the cancellations of fall sports competition, conferences and departments around the country at all divisions are now focused on how they might shift fall competition seasons to the spring semester. This session provides various perspectives and insights from those that have formally announced plans for the spring, as well as those that are still working through the process. The panelists share where they've been and where they're going as our industry grapples with these unprecedented situations. Speakers: Mike Snyder, Illinois College (Moderator); Dr. Robert Helmer, Baldwin Wallace University; Dr. Charles McClelland, Southwestern Athletic Conference; David Sayler, Miami University.
The Governor introduces new restrictive measures to slow the growing rate of COVID transmission, and ease the strain on an overwhelmed hospital system. Then, Mississippi's three public HBCUs will not be playing football this fall. We check in with their athletic department about the SWAC's decision to suspend fall sports.Plus, the Census response rate in Mississippi is below the national average. We examine why it's important to get counted.Segment 1:Governor Tate Reeves is taking more restrictive measures to slow what has been the worst month of COVID-19 transmission since the pandemic reached Mississippi in mid-March. Last week, Reeves announced three new additions to existing measures, beginning with the addition of six new counties under his mask mandate. Reeves added Calhoun, Holmes, Lamar, Montgomery, Winston, and Yalabusha counties to the existing list of 23 under the current order. Reeves did not remove any counties from the existing list. Reeves also placed further state-wide restrictions on social gatherings. The third added measure by Reeves restricts operations in bars. Reeves says bars should look and work more like restaurants - with spaced seating - and cited the growing number of cases in 18 - 39 year olds as a motivating factor behind the order. Reeves hopes the measures will help reduce the strain on the state's hospital system. Segment 2:After causing the cancellation of winter championships and spring seasons, the coronavirus pandemic is now threatening football and other fall sports. The Ivy League said earlier this month that it is canceling all fall sports, toppling the first in what appears to be a string of dominoes. This week, the SouthwesterN Athletic Conference announced it will suspend it's football and fall sports until the spring - making it the first major conference with ties to Mississippi to take such action. Mississippi's three public HBCU's - Jackson State University, Alcorn State University, and Mississippi Valley State University - are all members of the SWAC. Our Michael Guidry discusses with ASU's Derek Horne and JSU's Dennis Driscoll.Segment 3:The U.S. Census Bureau is continuing to count every person living in the country for the 2020 Census. But the self-report rates in Mississippi are falling below the national average - 57% in-state compared to 62% nationally. Response is even slower in the capital city, dropping to a 56% rate. Marilyn Stephens is an Assistant Regional Census Manager. She says census workers are back in the field to ensure those who have yet to self-report, get counted.
