Two-time Emmy and Three-time NAACP Image Award-winning, television Executive Producer Rushion McDonald interviewed Jennifer Ledwith.   She has a business degree from the University of Oklahoma.   She is the owner of Scholar Ready, an educational services company. She meets with clients online and her company Scholar Ready tutors Math, conducts personal essay writing workshops, and prepares students for PSAT, SAT, and ACT exams. Houston native, entrepreneur, and educator, Jennifer Ledwith understood from a young age that education and literacy were crucial to success. Again and again, people told her that her mother — a single parent with serious debt and no child support — made too much money for her to get any free money for college. She didn't finish in the top 10% of her high school class (which is academic poison in her home state of Texas). Thankfully, her PSAT scores were high, and she could write the essays to get the money. She knew how to beg for money tactfully in 100 words. She knew why she wanted to get a business degree from the University of Oklahoma. From her junior year of high school to her junior year of college, she wrote essays for over 30 scholarships. She won enough money to pay for tuition and fees. She had the most scholarships when she walked across the stage at graduation. The announcer was still reading them after she had crossed the stage. Even then, she didn't have enough money for school. She worked and worked and continued to apply for scholarships. She graduated from an out-of-state university (University of Oklahoma) with no credit card debt and only $1,000 in student loans. Hey, a girl needs plane tickets. Jennifer Ledwith is the owner of Scholar Ready, an educational services company. She meets with clients online. She also studied Personal Financial Planning at Rice University and is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™. Company Description *Scholar Ready tutors Math, conducts personal essay writing workshops, and prepares students for PSAT, SAT, and ACT exams. Many of Scholar Ready's students have earned academic scholarships, including full rides to Mississippi Valley State University, Fordham University, Texas A & M University, and the University of Houston-Clear Lake. We strive to instill our students with confidence that is earned and true. We teach them how to learn, how to advocate for what they need in the classroom, how to study, and how to set goals and expectations. We do not allow our students to be limited by experiences of the world they currently inhabit. We want them to have the confidence and work ethic to reach a better life and achieve any goal they set for themselves. #STRAW #BEST #SHMS  Support the show: https://www.steveharveyfm.com/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Jas Boothe is a Chicago Native, Disabled Army Veteran, Cancer Survivor, and Speaker who gave over 17 years of service to this great nation. She deployed during the Operation Iraq Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom campaigns. Her entire military career was dedicated to working with and advocating for Soldiers and their family members. In 2005, she was a single parent in the Army Reserves living in New Orleans. That spring, she learned she would soon be deploying to Iraq. During her mobilization, Boothe's life was torn apart by two significant events. In August of that year, she lost everything she owned due to Hurricane Katrina. She tried to shift her focus to her platoon that counted on her for leadership through the deployment. However, in September, she received a devastating diagnosis of aggressive head, neck, and throat cancer and could not deploy. Boothe's options were limited and posed some tough choices for her. Because of her illness, she was facing discharge from the military. But she needed complex full-time medical care, a job, and a place to live with her young son. When searching for assistance, she found there were no existing programs for female Veterans with children. Her military told her to explore welfare and social services as an option, just like every other single mother. Jas then realized that America had forgotten about the women who have served, fought, bled, and died alongside their male counterparts. She found these options unacceptable for a woman who had honorably served her country. After extensive cancer treatment, including radiation therapy that would leave life-long side effects, she was able to stay in the Reserves and immediately began looking for full-time employment and a place for her and her son to live. In 2006, she relocated to Missouri with her aunt, where she had subsequently accepted a job offer from the Army National Guard. Later in the year, she received an opportunity to return to full-time duty in Washington, DC.; nonetheless, Boothe never forgot what she and her son had been through. She became determined to ensure her fellow sister Veterans had a resource in their time of need. Jas founded Final Salute Inc in November 2010 as part of her commitment to "Never Leave a Fallen Comrade."Final Salute Inc has assisted over 7000 women Veterans and children in over 30 States and Territories. Boothe holds a BA in Mass Communications from Mississippi Valley State University and dual MAs in Human Resource Management and Management and Leadership from Webster University.Jas also features in the 2017 documentary "Served Like a Girl" (http://servedlikeagirl.com/), produced by Lysa Heslov, which follows several American women wounded in action transitioning from soldier to civilian after serving their country in Iraq and Afghanistan. Boothe is the mother of two wonderful boys, Brandon (currently serving in the United States Air Force) and Jammel Jr., and wife to a Marine Combat Veteran, Jammel R. LaMonica Peters is a Broadcast Journalist for KFMB-TV in San Diego, California. Peters, fascination with broadcasting started with the Crenshaw High Cougar News. As Student Body President, I would address my classmates via closed-circuit TV. I'd also go to the top urban L.A. radio station to announce the most popular songs voted on by students. That was my first taste of being in broadcasting and I loved it! After finishing my Communications Studies degree at UCLA, I taught school in the Los Angeles Unified School District but ultimately, I decided to pursue my dream job as a Broadcast Journalist. I went back to radio where it all began to get my broadcasting career started. I volunteered at two local radio stations while still working full-time. I volunteered at KJLH-FM, a station I grew up listening to and where I learned the positive impact local media outlets can have on a community. I also worked at KPFK-FM, a public radio station in Los Angeles, where I hosted "The Peters Poll" as a part of a public affairs show. It was my first chance to use social media to interact directly with listeners. I'd pose a question to the audience about a hot topic on Facebook and then read some of their responses on air. After working in radio, I made the decision to pursue a career in television news. Soon after, I'd move to Greenville, MS to be the Weekend Anchor and Reporter at WXVT. I then moved to WCBI News in Columbus, MS. There I covered the devastation left behind after 23 tornadoes ripped through Mississippi on the same day, taking the lives of 14 people. I also interviewed Sabrina Butler, the only woman in America to be exonerated from death row, as she campaigned around the country to eliminate the death penalty. I was honored to be acknowledged by the Mississippi Associated Press for Public Affairs in 2014. I was awarded a 3-part series on breast cancer. My Aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer the year before and now thankfully she's a survivor. I also taught communications and theatre classes at Mississippi State University, the largest college in the state, as well as Mississippi Valley State University.

You have to be able to fight through adversity.”In this episode, Jerry shares his journey from football dream to reality, the power of working together as a team, winning the Super Bowl three times, why losing makes you stronger, how to prepare mentally and physically for greatness and longevity, and why the GOAT mindset is for everyone. “I'll do what others won't, so tomorrow I can accomplish what others can't. In this podcast, Patti Phillips shares an inspiring conversation with the Director of Athletics at Mississippi Valley State University, Dianthia Ford-Kee.   Dianthia’s energy and zest for life is undeniable. Those qualities, she says, stem from humble beginnings. Growing up playing backyard basketball and softball games with family, she never imagined that her love of those sports would lead to being a dual-sport collegiate athlete, 6-time conference champion Head Coach,  AND a Director of Athletics. Her passion for helping others and mentoring young people is palpable, and truly inspiring.     The fact that a former colleague became a president and then came calling for her reminds us that we are always interviewing for the next job through our performance every day. And just as important, she never shied away from making a connection or taking the next opportunity when it came knocking.   In our conversation, Dianthia opens up about her experience working in all 3 NCAA Divisions, why she has chosen to only work at HBCU’s and what her experience was like being the only female administrator in her department for many years. We also talk about her experience taking the initiative needed for department evolution and how being intentional about lifelong learning positions you for impact.   Don’t miss a moment of this conversation! It's accurate to 99% degree in relationships and life whatever you sow in relationships you get back we see this in parent child and we see it in marriage.       It's easy to see in the realm of finances and health, but it is just as real in the realm of relationships.    If you have a great life it is because you have great relationships.    But here is something you need to look at when it comes to sowing and reaping in relationships. Any relationship (especially home relationships) are like personal hygiene. You must care for every area of your body.… You don't just wash your hands and think everything else is ok. Can you imagine a surgeon showing up for surgery and he is dressed in raggedy clothes, with poop on his shoes, wet paint on his shirt and greasy hair and lice… but he is like…”hey I washed my hands!”   You can't get away with just saying “hey I provided for the family” that is not good enough. “Hey I took my kids to church” “Hey I haven't watched any porn” You must sow into all areas of your relationships.      Jerry Rice He played for Mississippi Valley State University, in Itta Bena, Mississippi, a virtual unknown. He was once asked, "Why did you attend a small, obscure university like Mississippi Valley State University in Itta Bena, Mississippi?" Rice responded, "Out of all the big-time schools (such as UCLA) to recruit me, MVSU was the only school to come to my house and give me a personal visit."   The big-time schools recruited through cards, letters, and advertisements, but only one came to meet him and showed Rice personal attention.     Men, when it comes to relationships, especially family… you don't get to mail it in! You have to show up and be present!

As Mississippi surpasses two pandemic milestones, we examine the state's response to the coronavirus. Then, the Lt. Governor reflects upon an unprecedented first session.Plus, a Civil Rights icon is celebrated on what would have been her 103rd birthday.Segment 1:Mississippi has surpassed two grim milestones in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. Over the weekend, total COVID-19 cases reached the 100,000 mark, while related deaths topped 3,000. After steadily dropping for much of August, the seven-day case average in the state has leveled off recently. And last week, Governor Tate Reeves allowed his Executive Order carrying the statewide mask mandate to expire. Dr. Claude Brunson is the Executive Director of the Mississippi State Medical Association. He examines the state of the pandemic in Mississippi with our Michael Guidry.Segment 2:For first-term Lt. Governor Delbert Hosemann, the 2020 legislative session began like many before it. But it was soon interrupted by the coronavirus pandemic, creating arguably the most unorthodox legislative year on record. Hosemann and other legislative leaders had to quickly pivot to the emergency needs of the state in its fight against COVID-19. The Lt. Governor reflects on the session beginning with how lawmakers allocated over a billion dollars in CARES Act relief.Segment 3:Today marks what would have been the 103rd birthday of Civil Rights icon Fannie Lou Hamer. Hamer is most notably known for her testimony at the 1964 National Democratic Party's Convention on behalf of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party. In commemoration of Hamer's life and legacy, an historic marker is being unveiled outside of the Sunflower County Courthouse. It is the product of months of planning by Mississippi Valley State University's public history students, and their professor, Dr. C. Sade Turnipseed. The Governor introduces new restrictive measures to slow the growing rate of COVID transmission, and ease the strain on an overwhelmed hospital system. Then, Mississippi's three public HBCUs will not be playing football this fall. We check in with their athletic department about the SWAC's decision to suspend fall sports.Plus, the Census response rate in Mississippi is below the national average. We examine why it's important to get counted.Segment 1:Governor Tate Reeves is taking more restrictive measures to slow what has been the worst month of COVID-19 transmission since the pandemic reached Mississippi in mid-March. Last week, Reeves announced three new additions to existing measures, beginning with the addition of six new counties under his mask mandate. Reeves added Calhoun, Holmes, Lamar, Montgomery, Winston, and Yalabusha counties to the existing list of 23 under the current order. Reeves did not remove any counties from the existing list. Reeves also placed further state-wide restrictions on social gatherings. The third added measure by Reeves restricts operations in bars. Reeves says bars should look and work more like restaurants - with spaced seating - and cited the growing number of cases in 18 - 39 year olds as a motivating factor behind the order. Reeves hopes the measures will help reduce the strain on the state's hospital system. Segment 2:After causing the cancellation of winter championships and spring seasons, the coronavirus pandemic is now threatening football and other fall sports. The Ivy League said earlier this month that it is canceling all fall sports, toppling the first in what appears to be a string of dominoes. This week, the SouthwesterN Athletic Conference announced it will suspend it's football and fall sports until the spring - making it the first major conference with ties to Mississippi to take such action. Mississippi's three public HBCU's - Jackson State University, Alcorn State University, and Mississippi Valley State University - are all members of the SWAC. Our Michael Guidry discusses with ASU's Derek Horne and JSU's Dennis Driscoll.Segment 3:The U.S. Census Bureau is continuing to count every person living in the country for the 2020 Census. But the self-report rates in Mississippi are falling below the national average - 57% in-state compared to 62% nationally. Response is even slower in the capital city, dropping to a 56% rate. Marilyn Stephens is an Assistant Regional Census Manager. She says census workers are back in the field to ensure those who have yet to self-report, get counted. As a black man, a father of young black men and a coach/mentor to young black men it is important to show them positive examples of the possibilities and potential for their futures if they only dare to dream. Lindsey Hunter is an example of the opportunities for success that exist within the structure of the HBCU environment. He utilized his athletic ability, and lessons learned during his growth & development on and off the court to transcend beyond the perceived glass ceiling stopping HBCU athlete's from making it successfully to the PRO's. The 2x NBA Champion brought context to global issues and hopefully enlightened young athletes on what it's like to play at the HBCU level. An estimated 72,000 are without power and at least 100 people are currently displaced. The Governor has also issued a series of Executive Orders related to the state's COVID-19 response. He announced these new measures at a press conference on Friday. In total, the Governor has issued six new Executive Orders this month, beginning with the shelter-in-place order on April 1st. Segment 2:The Bonnet Carre spillway, which lies on the western edge of St. Charles Parish in Louisiana, was built, in part, as a response to the great 1927 flood that decimated the lower Mississippi. The 5.7 mile chain of locks, traditionally opened at a frequency of once every ten years, is now open for the third consecutive spring. As Secretary of State Michael Watson tells our Michael Guidry, it is causing geological and economic damage to the Mississippi Sound.Segment 3:Universities and Colleges in Mississippi have transitioned to online distance learning to continue educating students during the Coronavirus pandemic. Rep. Omar Labeled Anti-Semitic For Pointing Out The Problematic Role Of AIPAC

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) apologized this afternoon for what many saw as anti-Semitic comments discussing links between AIPAC, as well as other Zionist lobbying efforts and money, and American policy output. She quote tweeted journalist and Intercept co-founding editor Glenn Greenwald, who said: "GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy threatens punishment for @IlhanMN and @RashidaTlaib over their criticisms of Israel. It's stunning how much time US political leaders spend defending a foreign nation even if it means attacking free speech rights of Americans," and she added that McCarthy's motives were “all about the Benjamins.” When people asked what she meant, Omar tweeted, “AIPAC,” referring to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, an influential pro-Israel lobbying group that has spent millions sending lawmakers on visits to the Jewish nation over the years. What did Congresswoman Omar say or tweet, and was it anti-Semitic? A Virginia state legislator, Delegate Patrick A. Hope, who intended to begin impeachment proceedings against Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax, backed off today after African-American lawmakers demanded there not be a rush to oust Mr. Fairfax, who is black, over accusations of sexual assault while the state's white governor and attorney general are refusing to resign after they admitted wearing blackface in their youth. This situation is getting more complex by the day. Mr. Hope circulated a resolution on Sunday that would have directed a House of Delegates committee to determine whether allegations of sexual assault against Mr. Fairfax by two women, Meredith Watson and Vanessa C. Tyson, “constitute conduct sufficient to provide grounds for impeachment.” He had said on Friday evening that he would introduce articles of impeachment today if Mr. Fairfax, a fellow Democrat who denies the allegations, had not resigned by then. Mr. Hope backed down after a Sunday night conference call among House Democrats turned heated, according to two Democrats directly familiar with the call who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss party matters. Mr. Hope said on Twitter on Monday that discussions with his colleagues had “led to additional conversations that need to take place before anything is filed.” Members of the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus, who have been agonizing over what to do regarding all three of the state's executives for over a week now, believe the claims against Mr. Fairfax should be litigated in a legal setting, not a political venue.Forty years ago today, Iranians engaged in a bloodless revolution. They overthrew Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, the Western-backed dictator, also known as the Shah. This made me reflect upon Mohammad Mosaddegh, the 35th prime minister of Iran, who held office from 1951 until 1953, when his government was overthrown in a coup d'état orchestrated by the United States' Central Intelligence Agency and the United Kingdom's MI6. Anglo-American oil companies did not like, among other things, that Mosaddegh was nationalizing Iranian oil and raising the price per barrel so that he could raise the standard of living for the average Iranian. Sounds a lot like what the US is doing in Venezuela. Is there a comparison between the US-backed coup in Iran and the US-backed coup in Venezuela?GUESTS:Talib Karim — Attorney and executive director of STEM4US. Activists Hold Nationwide Protests In Response to Sessions' Forced Resignation

"Nobody Is Above The Law." The coalition of progressive activists led by the group MoveOn called for a nationwide protest today at 5 p.m. in response to the president firing Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Anna Galland, executive director of MoveOn Civic Action, gave the following statement: “By firing Jeff Sessions and putting in place a loyalist like Matthew Whitaker, Donald Trump is trying to take over a Special Counsel investigation that has already led to multiple guilty pleas and convictions. Trump's attempt to be his own judge and jury is inconsistent with the rule of law and democracy ... Whitaker has made clear that he can't be an impartial overseer of this critical investigation ... Congress must immediately move to protect the independence of Special Counsel Mueller and put in protections that prevent Trump from firing him or undercutting his investigation or having his new acting attorney general or eventual replacement obstruct Mueller's work. The people will not stand for this: Within hours, we will take to the streets in ‘#ProtectMueller' rapid-response protests around the country." For much of the past two months prior to Wednesday, Mueller's probe into Russian electoral interference and possible ties between Trump's campaign and Moscow went quiet, as had been expected. Department of Justice guidelines recommend not taking any law enforcement actions within 60 days of an election to avoid influencing voters or even giving the appearance of swaying them. As we come out of the midterm elections, most Americans focused on domestic policy, while the rest of the world observed and observes through a different lens. In a recent article by Vijay Prashad, he states, "It is evident from the atmosphere in the United Nations that the countries of the world—even close U.S. allies—fear US policy on a number of issues." Let's look at this in the context of today's announcement by acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen of an Interim Final Rule declaring that "those aliens who contravene a presidential suspension or limitation on entry into the United States through the southern border with Mexico will be rendered ineligible for asylum." Meaning, immigrants who illegally cross the border will be stripped of their eligibility to receive asylum in the US. What does this all mean when it comes to China, Cuba, Russia and Mexico? Itchy fingers in the Trump administration are eager to start a shooting war somewhere in South America—either Cuba, Nicaragua or Venezuela. The appetite for this is not there in the United Nations, nor is it shared in Latin America. But that has never stopped the United States. Disregard for world opinion as well as the opinion of the US citizenry defines the US government. Thirty-six million people around the world, half a million of them in New York City, protested on February 15, 2003, to prevent the US war on Iraq. George W. Bush did not pay attention to them. Nor will Trump. With the midterm elections over in the US, there are still several races that have yet to be called. Is the so-called "Blue Wave" actually more of a lava flow, a subtler realignment of the American political landscape? Georgia Republican Brian Kemp announced today that he will resign as secretary of state, effective at 11:59 a.m. ET, to begin his transition to the state's top office, despite the gubernatorial race still being undecided. The race could still go to a run-off if Kemp's share of the vote drops below 50 percent. He is currently at 50.3%, with a lead of nearly 63,000 votes. He has engaged in various types of voter suppression, and this issue is still not getting enough attention within the Democratic Party, let alone in mainstream American media. As we look at the race Stacey Abrams is running, Andrew Gillum could benefit from a recount in Florida's gubernatorial election, and Mike Espy is in a runoff in Mississippi for a Senate seat. These are gains that a lot of people who don't follow this stuff like we do would not have expected to come from the South. There's an interesting piece in the Wall Street Journal saying, “Just as rural white voters fled the Democratic Party after Mr. Obama took office, educated suburbanites abandoned the GOP after President Trump's election. Those trends continued Tuesday, and will not only alter the governing coalitions in Washington but also will change how and where candidates engage with the American electorate.” Is this as a valid assessment of a slow shift in the American electorate?GUESTS:Margaret Flowers - Co-director of Popular Resistance, co-host of Clearing the FOG and former candidate for US Senate. After 150 episodes, I thought it would be a great idea to look back at some of the designers we've profiled from the early days of Revision Path. What are they up to now? What has changed since our first interview? I'm curious to know! Dewon Hall was first featured on the site back in August 2013, and he's currently the webmaster for Mississippi Valley State University in Itta Bena, MS. Before his work at MVSU, he worked for the past decade at Shamoon Advertising and Marketing creating award-winning campaigns. Dewon walked me through a typical day working at MVSU, and from there we went into pros and cons of being a designer in a rural area -- something I'm all too familiar with! He also talked about the work he's doing with art students in the Mississippi Delta area through a program called A.R.T. | Acknowledging Real Talent According to Dewon, it's important for him to be exactly where he is so he can help foster the next generation of designers. Powerful words from a great designer. Keep up the awesome work, Dewon!
