"Proven" While many accomplished individuals have accredited their success to that of pulling up their own bootstraps, that is not the case for Chimeaka White. Looking from the outside, it may appear that her ascension to becoming a prominent attorney came about from her following the traditional path that most lawyers do. Yet, that is far from Chimeaka's reality. Her story expresses her faith in God, love and support from her family and friends, and an unwavering determination to win. More than anything, Chimeaka's story is that of someone who is “Proven”. Chimeaka has proven not only to others but even to herself that regardless of what circumstances she may face, regardless of what life throws at her, nothing will stop her from reaching her goals. Attorney Chimeaka White of Greensboro, NC, is the mother of two amazing adults, Harmony and Sincere. Chimeaka is a graduate of James B. Dudley High School. She also graduated from North Carolina A&T State University with a Bachelors Degree in Chemistry. She also received a Law Degree from North Carolina Central University. Today, she owns The White Law Firm, PLLC, located in High Point, NC, the first black female-owned and operated personal injury law firm in the Triad area. Her motto is “Justice4Pain”. Chimeaka comes from a long list of strong women. She says that her success can be attributed to several key factors, including her upbringing, which instilled strong values in her, and the mentorship I received throughout her career. “I am inspired by my maternal great-grandmother, Evelyn Watson, who taught me the power of love and patience. She lived slowly and simply. My maternal grandmother, Margaret Hardy (Momo) taught me the importance of cultivating a spiritual practice. She has a strong relationship with God and taught me how to pray deep, strong prayers. My paternal grandmother, Lois White (Mama White), taught me not to have anything that I don't plan on using. When you bring one thing into your house, remove three things from your house.” It should come as no surprise that Chimeaka is an attorney. As a child, she wanted to become a prosecutor. While attending NC A&T, she thought about pursuing a career as a dentist. Prior to law school, she worked as a paralegal at a personal injury law firm. She worked alongside experienced paralegal Teresa Burney, who taught her how to manage car accident cases from the intake process to closing the file. This is where she gained her passion for the law. Chimeaka says she made the decision to become an attorney because she genuinely loves to help people. “After being bullied in middle school, I learned how to stand up for myself and others. I know how it feels to be voiceless, to endure pain due to being afraid of standing up for yourself. This is why I became an attorney to fight for the rights of others. I do not allow people to be taken advantage of. I am a voice for the people,” she says." Attorney Chimeaka L. To coincide with the week of World Soil Day 2023, our third and final episode of our Threaded Together: cotton and sustainability podcast series, sponsored by Cotton Incorporated, looks at the US Climate Smart Cotton Program- a bold, new and exciting initiative in the US, which aims to measure and improve the country's cottons' carbon footprint. We look at what it is, how it works, who can take part, why it's needed, who benefits from it and why it's of interest to the whole value chain in the textile industry. To answer these questions, host Philip Berman is joined by: Daren Abney, the Executive Director of the US Cotton Trust Protocol, which leads on the programme. Dr Cristine Morgan, Chief Scientific Officer at the Soil Health Institute, which is partner on the programme. Soil health expert Dr Morgan explains later in the podcast: "The main thing that we want to do is improve the soil. We want to get carbon out of the atmosphere and we also want to release fewer greenhouse gases into the atmosphere." What does innovation mean to you? For many, it's about the latest tech marvel or the next big thing in the market. But as I sat down with Tyrome ‘Ty' Smith, Director of Strategic Partnership at Common Mission Project, our conversation gave the term a whole new meaning. Our discussion revolved around the unseen channels of innovative ideas - beyond Silicon Valley and tech giants, deep into governmental organizations, think tanks, and more. We pondered upon a simple yet profound question: where do these seeds of revolutionary ideas truly germinate? Ty highlighted an area that's often overlooked: Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). While institutions like Stanford and MIT often grab the limelight, it's these lesser-known educational bastions where a significant chunk of innovative minds are nurtured. And this revelation isn't just about recognizing talent but also about acknowledging the challenges they face. Consider this: North Carolina A&T State University faced underfunding to the staggering tune of $3.7 billion from 1987-2020. A figure that not only reflects financial disparity but also raises questions on potential innovations lost in this financial void. Our conversation often circled back to a memorable movie scene from 'Moneyball'. In a pivotal moment, the main character highlights the futility of trying to compete with the affluent while being resource-strapped. The message? Redefine the game. Just as in baseball, the landscape of innovation needs a fresh perspective – one that isn't confined by financial boundaries or traditional norms. So, as you think about innovation, I challenge you to shift your perspective. Embrace innovation not just as a groundbreaking product but as a revolutionary way of thinking. Dive into our full conversation and let's reshape the innovation narrative together.
Bridgette Williams is an entrepreneur who allows divine inspiration to guide her, and it hasn't steered her wrong yet. Currently, she owns two thriving businesses. Bridgette's latest product of divine intervention is Demhaj Poetry Lounge, located in High Point, NC. The name Demhaj is significant for many reasons. “When I first conceived the idea of the coffee shop, I remember thinking about how much love and joy my son brought me so that I would name the business after him. I wanted people to feel what I felt in a way. My son's name is Jahmed, so I said I would name the shop Demhaj (Dem-hage),” Bridgette said with a little lift. “The first time the idea about a poetry lounge and coffee shop came to me, I was a young mother and met a woman named Teresa at the social services department,” Bridgette shared. “I was sitting in the waiting room, and there was this older woman staring at me. So, I smiled and introduced myself. We started talking, and she told me she was a poet.” This intrigued Bridgette because she had been writing poetry since she was thirteen years old. “Writing was a therapeutic outlet for me. I have drawers full of poems I've written over the years.” As a result of Bridgette's passion for poetry, she and Teresa found an instant kinship that exists to this day. “Teresa was one of the first people I shared my vision about the poetry lounge with. I told her I wanted to create a space where people could come together and express themselves while enjoying each other's company. I asked myself, ‘What brings people together? Coffee.'” The idea came to Bridgette in 2003, but it would be eighteen years before she would see it come to life. “It's funny how you plan to do something, and God redirects you,” Bridget laughed. “In middle school, I was part of a mentorship program. A young lady from North Carolina A&T State University came, and she had such a positive effect on me. She made me want to do something with my life. I was so inspired by her that I wanted to become a mentor.” After graduating high school, Bridgette started at Winston-Salem State University in Winston-Salem, NC. Still very passionate about helping others through mentorship, she enrolled in a program to become a certified mentor. “Rebuilding the Walls of Hope was the name of the faith-based mentorship training program I attended. Marie Carter led it,” Bridgette explained. Her goal was to start her own mentorship program for troubled teens eventually. But when she started planning, Bridgette was led in a different direction. “When I say led, I mean God literally redirected me to something completely different from what I thought I wanted to do. I was playing around with names for the mentorship program, and God started dealing with me about a home health care agency,” Bridgette said, laughing as she remembered the unexpected and confusing shift. “Before I knew it, God had given me a name and a plan on how to start a home healthcare agency. I knew it was God because I had no idea how to start or run this kind of business.” In 2006 Faithful Nurses Healthcare Inc. was born. It's been seventeen years since Bridgette followed God and launched her first business, and it's still going strong. After starting the home healthcare agency, Bridgette switched her degree to nursing. But the demands of being a young wife and mother caused her to leave college a year short of graduating. “Life was very demanding during that time. Anyone who knew me before then knew the “happy, fun-loving, and easy-going” Bridgette, but I think somewhere along the way, I lost my spark,” Bridgette admits. In 2021 Bridgette found herself as a single parent. Bridgette was living life with no net or restraints for the first time in over twenty years. Over the years, she continued to share with her family and friends her vision for the poetry and coffee shop. Newly single, with her only son in college, Bridgette was in unfamiliar territory. “Everything was different. I was on my own, my son was independent, and for the first time in twenty-one years, I could think about what I wanted and what would make me happy. I won't say it was easy,” Bridgette admitted. “I had to overcome the fear of failing. This would be the first time I did something like this alone. After what I'd gone through, I wasn't ready to have one of my lifelong dreams fail.” Bridgette decided to step out on faith, putting everything she had behind her new business venture. Since her son had heard her say for years that she would open this café, he didn't take her seriously initially, but after seeing the energy she was putting out, he soon got on board. “It seemed as if as soon as I chose to trust God with my dream, he put everything into place,” Bridgette shared. “Since opening the Demhaj Poetry Lounge, I have my smile back. The spark that made me, me, is back, and I'm grateful. From the moment a customer walks in, I pray they can feel the love, peace, and genuine joy I feel daily. Demhaj is not just a place to get great coffee. It's a place where people from every walk of life can come and feel comfortable expressing themselves, meet new people, and enjoy being part of something beautiful.” To learn more about Demhaj Poetry Lounge, you may visit their website at www.demhajpoetrylounge.com You may also call them directly at 336-307-4105 To learn more about Faithful Nurses Health Care, you may visit their website at www.faithfulnurse.com or by calling them directly at 1-888-598-1882 ext 2, or by calling 704-598-1882 ext 2 To learn more about Huami Magazine, please visit our website at www.huamimagazine.com You may also follow Huami Magazine on Facebook and Instagram. Welcome to the 2015 90 Degree Show Celebration Bowl! The bowl game to kick off the bowl season will be the champions of the Southwestern Athletic Conference in Alcorn State University, against the champions of the Mid Eastern Athletic Confernce in North Carolina A&T State University. We will talk about this matchup, what we thought about the game, what we thought about this year overall in bands and who we think will win the Honda. This bowl was a great experience on TV, but can we get the SIAC and the CIAA involved? We brainstorm about how we can add our two other conferences in a bowl game or ask should the teams play each other? This is our last broadcast before the Honda Battle of the Bands in 2016. Tonight we welcome the great Christy Walker and the owner and founder of Block Band Music and Publishing, Rashad Watters. The topic of Diversity in Accounting is not new. I have been hearing about it even before I entered into the profession almost two decades ago! Yet, the accounting profession is still not where it should be in terms of diversity goals. Any studies or statistics would show you that the representation of minorities in the accounting profession is low, specifically as the professionals continue to rise up the rank. In the past years, we also heard about the pipeline problem - some of the young talents just don't find accounting an attractive career option, which is such a shame because I personally love accounting, and how my accounting background and experiences has opened up so many opportunities and helped me to continue to build my entrepreneurial career. Usually, when people look at me, they would never think I am an accountant - but I am a super proud accountant, and I am also a lot of things - I am a published author, podcast host, speaker, business owner, endurance athlete, pianist, and yes, I also built an online skin care company and sold it many years ago! And honestly, when you get to know more of us in accounting, you will know how fascinating our stories are - there are comedians, FBI agents and children book authors - you name it! So I say we as accountants need to break this stereotype, change our narrative and branding, most importantly, share our stories so people know exactly what we do and the impact of our work. ABOUT DR. KECIA WILLIAMS SMITH, PhD, CPA, Director, Center for Accounting Diversity Kecia is a CPA, and currently serves as the Director of the Master of Accountancy Program in the Department of Accounting and Finance at North Carolina A&T State University. She spent her early careers at one of the big 4 for almost a decade, then, she pivoted to join the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) where she created and led the Inspections Training Office that served over 400 inspection personnel. Yes, if you remember, the PCAOB is a dedicated regulatory agency that was created by the Sarbanes–Oxley Act of 2002 to audit the auditors. Then, after spending almost another decade there, she went back to school to get her PhD - and post-PhD, she taught at Virginia Tech for a few years, and eventually returned to her alma mater in academia, bringing all her experiences together to the classroom. Cece's note: Kecia's passion is contagious. I'd say it's obvious that helping pave the way to quality education to the younger generations is not only her vocation, but her calling in life. Eugenia Foxworth sits down with, Mark Pendergrass, CEA founder and executive director, was leading class that day. “We all made it a teachable moment,” he said. This was an opportunity to put CEA's mission — to educate and mentor youth by providing opportunities of exposure to artistic expression — into action. Pendergrass started the organization with an emphasis on photography, but it has evolved over time to include other art forms. “We've tapped into teaching journalism,” he said. “There's a writing component now. And we recently got into videography and filmmaking.” Mark is extremely proud of the new documentary and coffee table book, Behind The Ink, which is also a program which was developed to educate, teach and give students. an outlet to express themselves. “Behind the Ink” features stories of people across the Carolinas. Recently I have read some alarming statistics that men are being affected the most in the global mental health crisis. I never think it's easy to be men, I think we just don't hear enough about what they have to go through. I have empathy for everyone because I honestly think no matter what gender, each has its own unique and different set of challenges and circumstances! Men often grow up thinking that talking openly isn't very ‘manly'. The concept of masculinity and vulnerability can vary depending on the world and environment they grew up in, their parents' values, role models, the type of advice and support they get. The ultimate question no matter to men or women would be - how vulnerable do we allow ourselves to be? I am so excited to bring on one of the featured mentors from my book, Chuck Burch. Chuck is a proud alumnus of North Carolina A&T State University. You probably have read about his story about growing up in the inner city in a single-parent household, nevertheless, he was focused and he was determined. His journey is definitely full of twists and turns but he navigated through it - let it be in the corporate environment, or getting laid off twice, went on to do manual labor just to make ends meet; but that period of time ultimately led him to start and build a very successful business and begin his entrepreneurial journey. But he's here today not only to share with us his career or his interest in skating, but something deeper - to talk about vulnerability, mental health, insecurity and masculinity and how that may affect young men and what they can do. A woman of many talents and titles, Dr. Trina Pratt wears them all well. She is addressed as professor and also CEO. However, the most essential title she has is that of mom. For nearly ten years, Pratt dabbled with the idea of launching her very own line of organic baby food. Last year that small idea became a big reality. Little Chéngers LLC was launched in December 2020 as a subscription service for organic baby food. The company's motto is “Super Foods for Super Kids”. The line includes eight different flavor options: blueberry spinach, banana strawberry, mango, sweet potato, sweet potato with apple ginger, sweet potato apple and ginger, applesauce, and applesauce with ginger and cinnamon. The subscription offers plans of two or three meals per day on a weekly, bi-weekly, and monthly packages. Meals can be purchased individually as well. The premium food selection that Little Chéngers offers is explicitly tailored to enhance a baby's developmental milestones. Pratt is a proud graduate of North Carolina A&T State University, Temple University, and most recently, The University of North Carolina Greensboro, where she received her Ph.D. in Kinesiology, concentrating in Community Youth Sports Development. After becoming a new mom in 2010 to Ché, Pratt's life changed forever. With her son as the main focus of her life, she became very conscious of his needs, mainly growing and developing. As the time came for Che' to start eating solid foods, Pratt says that she headed to the grocery store and purchased a very popular line of baby food like any other new mother. “When I returned home and tried to feed it to Ché, he rejected it. My son normally had a healthy appetite, but I had never seen him do this before, pushing away a spoon full of food,” she says. Initially, she continued to take the advice of others and kept trying to feed it to Che', hoping that he would eventually begin to like it; but that didn't go so well. Pratt became concerned about her sons' reaction to the newly introduced baby food. She shares that he would eat other things like baby cereal and drink his milk just fine, but he wasn't a fan of the baby food. Next, she decided to taste the baby food for herself, and after one spoonful, she knew why Che' didn't want to eat it. “It was horrible. The food tasted terrible, and I, too, had a difficult time eating it. I knew I had to do something about this,” she says. Pratt then decided to do some research of her own and began discussing food options with some other moms. She wasn't able to find many mothers who made their children's food at home, as she knew for busy single mothers like herself, it was easier to pick some up from the grocery store. Running out of resources, she turned to her family for help, consulting with her grandmother, mother, and aunts for some sound advice. “As a child, it was my great-grandmother who fed me mostly and showed my mother how to take different foods and cut them into very fine peices, making it suitable for me to eat as a baby. It made sense for me to come back to those who fed me,” she says. It proved to be the right decision for Pratt. As she got better at creating new foods for Ché, Pratt came up with the great idea of Little Chéngers. Pratt's hope is for Little Chéngers to continue growing and thrive toward success. Despite some of the challenges she has faced, her goal is to expand and market her products nationally and globally, connecting with consumers that may not necessarily look like her. The Little Chéngers brand is for all baby's, and she hopes to ensure that parents have access to it. Are you looking for stylish eyewear that is sure to enhance your look? Well, you should look no further. Lady E Specs is the newest signature brand of eyewear to emerge out of Greensboro, NC. Dr. Erika Hendrix, a Greensboro native, and minister developed this eyewear line to provide her community with colorful and daring frames to fit any occasion. After surviving three strokes that impaired her ability to wear contacts, Dr. Hendrix grew interest in wearing unique glasses that fit her personality eventually leading to the birth of Lady E Specs. During her 20's, Dr. Hendrix enjoyed wearing simple reading glasses but as the years passed her eyes became weaker and she eventually needed prescription glasses. She opted to wear contacts instead, and thoroughly enjoyed wearing them but after suffering a stroke she began to experience chronic dryness in her eyes. This made it impossible for her to continue wearing contacts. However, now it allowed her the opportunity to truly invest in the eyewear that she now wears. She utilized this opportunity to be more expressive in the eyewear that she chose and began purchasing her frames from a local eyewear entrepreneur, J. Franklin. She fell in love with his designs, even more, she liked that she was able to customize all her glasses. She would have him engrave “Lady E” into every pair of frames that she purchased so that they would be personalized specifically to her. After frequently purchasing frames and becoming more acquainted with J. Franklin and his company, she learned that he also worked as an eyewear manufacturer. One day he suggested that she should start her own eyewear line because of her distinct taste and connections through her work and ministry. Dr. Hendrix's eyewear features customization for each of the Divine 9 fraternities and sororities as well as a featured “Aggie Blue” frame to celebrate her HBCU alma mater, North Carolina A&T State University. All but two of Lady E Specs designs are unisex, so there are selections for any and everyone. The average cost for a pair of acetate frames from Lady E Specs will range from $95-$110 and the custom wooden frames begin at $250. Lady E Specs also accepts FSA and HSA flex spending funds from your employer as a form of payment. Dr. Hendrix plans to further her brand to new heights and share her vision around the world. Some of her future plans include launching a line dedicated to senior citizens and expanding into jewelry and apparel. She is currently working with local vendors to have Lady E Specs sold wholesale as well as online through her website. For more on the outbreak we talk with Jose Bernal of the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, Sikander Iqbal of Urban Peace Movement, who has a friend inside the jail, and Darby Aono (@darbyaono), a student at Berkeley Law who has been tracking the cases inside. 1:08 – Federal agents made national news for snatching protesters off of Portland, Oregon streets and tear gassing crowds at uprisings for racial justice and against police repression. But Portland independent journalist Tuck Woodstock (@tuckwoodstock) says the frightening tactics of the federal agents are not that different from those of the Portland Police Bureau or Multnomah County Sheriffs, which residents have already been enduring. Woodstock, who has covered the protests since May, gives us an on-the-ground update. 1:20 – Ken Klippenstein is a D.C. correspondent with The Nation.
