St. Brendan's mayor Bill Broderick says two lobster fisherman lost wharves in Sunday's storm + Keith Thomas of the Carbonear Heritage Society says the town is accustomed to high winds and big waves + Anne Osmond, chair of local service district for Cape Ray, says the community is hopeful it will get answers about the origin of a wooden shipwreck that washed ashore a year ago.
Folks in St. Brendan's are getting a little bit of good news, just in time for the holidays. People using oil heat in the island town of around 100 people were worried about where to get their fuel, after the only supplier to the community said it planned to stop delivering to residents this past fall. But Mayor Bill Broderick got an update from the government on Monday.

TolkienAt last out of the deep seas he passed, and mist rolled on the shore;under clouded moon the waves were loud,as the laden ship him boreto Ireland, back to wood and mire,to the tower tall and grey, where the knell of Cluian-ferta's belltolled in the green Galway.Where Shannon down to Lough Derg ranunder a rainclad skySaint Brendan came to his journey's endto await his hour to die.‘O! tell me, father, for I loved you well,if still you have words for me,of things strange in the rememberingin the long and lonely sea,of islands by deep spells beguiledwhere dwell the Elven-kind:in seven long years the road to Heavenor the Living Land did you find?'‘The things I have seen, the many things, have long now faded far;only three come clear now back to me:a Cloud, a Tree, a Star.We sailed for a year and a day and hailedno field nor coast of mean;no boat nor bird saw we ever afloatfor forty days and ten.We saw no sun at set or dawn, but a dun cloud lay ahead, and a drumming there was like thunder comingand a gleam of fiery red.Upreared from sea to cloud then sheera shoreless mountain stood;its sides were black from the sullen tideto the red lining of its hood.No cloak of cloud, no lowering smoke,no looming storm of thunderin the world of men saw I ever unfurledlike the pall that we passed under. We turned away, and we left asternthe rumbling and the gloom;then the smoking cloud asunder broke, and we saw the Tower of Doom:in its ashen head was a crown of red, where the fishes flamed and fell.Tall as a column in High Heaven's hall, its feet were deep as Hell;grounded in chasms the water drownedand buried long ago,it stands, I ween, in forgotten landswhere the kings of kings lie low.We sailed then on, till the wind had failed, and we toiled then with the oar,and hunger an thirst us sorely wrung, and we sang our psalms no more.A land at last with a silver strandat the end of strenght we found;the waves were singing in pillared cavesand pearls lay on the ground;and steep the shores went upward leapingto slopes of green and gold, and a stream out of rich and teemingthrough a coomb of shadow rolled.Thank you for journeying w/ the Saints with us!

A live podcast discussion recorded at the 2024 West Cork Chamber Music Festival. Composers Rhona Clarke and Deirdre Gribbin join Jonathan Grimes to discuss their work on ‘Magdalene Songs', an ongoing project by pianist Deirdre Brenner, which features their songs along with songs by Deirdre McKay, all based on testimonies from survivors of the Magdalene Laundries. This discussion took place following a performance the previous evening of the ‘Magdalene Songs' by mezzo Lotte Betts-Dean and Deirdre Brenner. From 1922 to 1996, more than 10,000 women and girls were incarcerated in Ireland's Magdalene Laundries. Operated by four religious orders in 10 locations around the country, these for-profit institutions detained individuals against their will and forced them to work long hours, unpaid, under abusive and humiliating conditions. These institutions committed some of the most serious systematic violations against human rights in Ireland in the 20th century. This work by is intended to honour those women who were so gravely mistreated by church and state in the Magdalene Laundries by giving voice to their experience. The early Christian missionary was born in Fenit in the 5th century and is best known for an epic voyage across the Atlantic. In this episode, Laura McElduff, Project Manager and David Hannon, Sector Head - Programme Manager from the National Development Finance Agency speak about the delivery of the Central & East Quads PPP project for TU Dublin on the Grangegorman Campus. They describe what a PPP project is and discuss the background to the project, the new buildings and facilities now available on the campus. They give an insight into some of the challenges faced during the delivery of this project and how these were overcome, and provide an overview of other activities in the NDFA including projects currently in procurement by the NDFA. The NDFA Project brief was to deliver two large academic buildings for TU Dublin to accommodate the migration of 15 different schools, and up to 10,000 students into a single campus on the Grangegorman site. The Grangegorman Development Agency (GDA) was established in 2006 by the Irish Government under the GDA Act 2005 to redevelop the 73-acre former St Brendan's Hospital grounds in Dublin's North Inner City as an integrated and inclusive education, health and community campus. The Venerable Bede … the conversion of Ethelbert and Bertha of Kent … the peregrinations of St Brendan and St Columba … the Five Kingdoms of Early Mediaeval Wales … John Knox and his parleys with Mary, Queen of Scots. If you grew up anywhere in the British Isles, you'll probably have found these some of the most yawnsome passages of national history, at least the way they were taught. Not the way Gevorg Virats tells them, though. I seized the opportunity of being with him in Odessa last week to record this podcast on the legacy of the Celts—as viewed by a denizen of the far-off Caucasus who plunged into the study of these peoples as he saw the supposedly immovable pillars of his boyhood years, the Soviet Union and Anglo-American world hegemony, collapsing about his ears. Learn from Gevorg what it is about Europe's North Atlantic fringe that has allowed its peoples to survive everything that the last couple of millennia has managed to throw at them, from Rome to globalism.

Caro shares the prayer of St. Brendan and how it has been providing connection and meaning in her life and she invites us to find ourselves in the words of this ancient prayer. Prayer of St Brendan Help me to journey beyond the familiar and into the unknown. Give me the faith to leave old ways and break fresh ground with you. Christ of the mysteries, I trust You to be stronger than each storm within me. I will trust in the darkness and know that my times, even now, are in your hand. Tune my spirit to the music of heaven and somehow, make my obedience count for you. Amen.
This week, Reverend Andy Fishburne (Methodist Minister in the west of the Island) finds that some words from St John's Gospel have a strong message for us today, as we take some more steps out of the Covid-19 lockdown. Reverend Dawn Mather (leader of the United Reformed Church on the Island) draws on her extensive experience as a hospital chaplain, to share a story that shows how helpful it is to have the conversation we all dread - the one about end of life. But when someone we love is seriously ill, and wants to talk about how they wish their death to be, we need to be willing to be 'the other half' of that conversation. Rev'd Dawn's story shows how having that conversation is not as difficult as we might imagine, and does, in the end, help everyone involved. This is Dying Matters Awareness Week, and you'll find lots of helpful resources on line - their website is dyingmatters.org When Reverend Ian Faulds was a member of the ministry team at the Cathedral in Peel, he gave many talks on the lives of the Celtic Saints. Saturday 16 May was the Feast of St Brendan - the Navigator - so this is a good moment to listen again as Rev'd Ian tells some stories of this remarkable 5th century Irishman who was both a skilled deep sea sailor and a man of great holiness. We cannot be sure whether or not he visited the Isle of Man, but we do have a link through the Parish Church of St Brendan which, for many years, was the Parish Church of Douglas. It's the church we now know as Old Kirk Braddan. Fifteen centuries later, Brendan the Navigator remains a remarkable and inspirational Celtic Saint. And we have the hymns YOU have chosen - today's music includes a very special blessing, and a lovely recording of All Things Bright and Beautiful by choirgirl Isabel Suckling who, at the age of 12, was mentored by Aled Jones. If you would like to choose a favourite hymn, chorus or sacred song, email me - judithley@manxradio.com and I'll do my very best to find it and include it in a forthcoming programme.
Change is the Root Chakra In this episode you can hear clairvoyant and healer Peter Tadd in conversation with one of his students, discussing change, how we live in a constant state of change and how our ability to cope with change colours our entire existence. Peter has been teaching worldwide for the last 40 years and this podcast gives a taste of his work; considering what native American women and Irish farmers have in common, and musing on St Brendan's voyage. The relevance of the root chakra to change and how to deal effectively with what life throws at us we must stay connected with the living earth through working with this chakra. #InevitableChange #PanicFear #ClimateChange #SpiritualOrientation #RootChakra #HeartCentered #IHateChange #ChangeEqualsLife #SenseofSelf

Fr Brendan whose patron Saint is St Brendan the Navigator is - like his patron saint a fearless traveler. A Priest of the Society of St Columban who after 12 years as a Resident Priest at St Mary’s Parish bids them farewell to move to his next destination. Fr Brendan has touched many lives, been an example of humility and kindness to the parishioners of St Marys and especially the youth. We share his story on this podcast with guest host and interviewer Camila Leon and listen as he says of an old Irish saying, “the story is not lost in the telling,” which means it just get better. Listen to the wisdom of this man who took the oath to serve. Listen to his answers to our listeners questions about vocation, spiritual dryness, what keeps his faith strong and what he wants to do before he dies. One of our favorite Holy men. We hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed interviewing him. | If you like this episode send us a message or email to Catholic.dad50@gmail.com follow us on Instagram at Catholic.dad or on Facebook at This Connected with Catholic.dad | Please Rate Share And give us a review | we will be praying for u-please pray for us - #BBlessedB3rd --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ThisConnected/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ThisConnected/support #columbansociety--- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ThisConnected/messageSupport this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ThisConnected/supportSupport the show (http://Patreon.com/ThisConnected)

Dublin: 1997. Three women occupy number 1 Orchard View, an assisted living facility for former patients of the nearby St Brendan's Psychiatric Hospital. On the night of March 6th of that year, two of the women, Sylvia Sheils and Mary Callanan, were brutally murdered in their rooms. They were discovered the next morning by their housemate Ann Murnagh, and a hunt for the killer began. The Gardai soon heard that a young heroin addict who slept rough in the Grangegorman area may be responsible for the heinous crimes. Dean Lyons was questioned by the Gardai and promptly confessed to the killings. But was this man capable of the horrible crimes he had confessed to, or did the Gardai have the wrong man? There would be two further murders before the case was solved.... Find us on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/mensreapod/) or Twitter (https://twitter.com/MensReaPod) ! Who discovered America? A drunk Irishman in a leather boat with a strong affinity towards sheep. It's fear and loathing in the Atlantic Ocean.
Archeological evidence proves that Leif Ericsson, the Icelandic Viking, arrived in the New World centuries before Columbus. But what if he was in turn beaten by an Irish monk a full five extra centuries. St. Brendan the Navigator is celebrate for his legendary journey to the "Island of the Blessed," described in the ninth-century work Voyage of St Brendan the Navigator. It tells of how he set out onto the Atlantic Ocean with dozens of pilgrims, accidentally camped out on a whale, and may have reached New England. For centuries historians dismissed his account as fiction. But true accounts sneak here. There are factual descriptions of sheep on the Faroe Islands. Volcanos and icebergs of Iceland are observed. Some archeologists even think there is evidence of a medieval Celtic church in New England. Find out in this episode if Leif Ericsson has lost his status as the first Westerner to reach the New World. TO HELP OUT THE SHOW Leave an honest review on iTunes.
