This week on It Was a Thing on TV, we go back to school. First, it's time to go back to school for the next three installments! We start with someone who is teaching until he gets his big break in acting, hooking up with seemingly every single lady along the way. Nick Freno: Licensed Teacherbrought some realities teenagers went through (and still go through) at the time, in addition to being a light-hearted comedy. Then, before Brian Griffin created a series about two oddball roommates on an episode of Family Guy, that premise was used in a short-lived NBC series which paired up a 14-year-old with an ex-Marine in his 40s in a college dorm. Ratings were amazing for the premiere episode, but the show still lasted only 8 shows. Find out why in this installment. Today, I spend time with Mike Crawford, a dynamic London photographer and master printer. For four decades he has worked with the world's most highly regarded photographers, including Martin Parr and Brian Griffin, one of the music industry's most prominent photographers. More recently, he was chosen to print hitherto unseen photographs for the celebrated late photographer Elliott Erwitt for his ‘Found, not Lost' book. As a photographer, Mike Crawford's captivating work, featuring urban landscapes and portraiture, is predominantly shot on film and crafted in the darkroom. I visit Mike on location at his company Lighthouse Darkroom, within the building that was once home to Russia's Zenit UK operation. With the arrival of August, there's a new assignment too, set this month by social and street photographer Emily Renier, one of Fujifilm's newest ambassadors. Links to all guests and features will be on the showpage, my sincere thanks to MPB.com who sponsor this show and the Extra Milers without whom we wouldn't be walking each week. WHY: A Sketchbook of Life is available here.

On 27th of January the world lost a legendary and unique photographer, Brian Griffin. His never ending creativity, off the wall vision and sheer drive to make new and original art left us with a body of work unlike any other, and earned him many plaudits, including Photographer of the Decade for his work in the 1980's. We were lucky enough to be joined by Brian on the show a couple of times. He was a truly lovely person, generous with his time and with an inexhaustible supply of stories about his work and life. Our conversation with him inspired all of us greatly (John would be referencing knicker elastic for many months after the show), and Clare went on to become good friends with Brian, an unsurprising meeting of creative minds. In tribute to Brian we're rebroadcasting his first appearance on the show, when we all got introduced to the man behind some truly incredible work, yet who somehow has gotten forgotten about as the years went on. As an added bonus, John was on this show, and it is always wonderful to hear his voice. https://www.briangriffin.co.uk/

Brian Griffin was born in Birmingham in 1948 and grew up in the neighbouring Black Country, in the English midlands. He started his working life at 16 working in a factory, where he remained for 5 years, before finally making his escape to Manchester Polytechnic where he took a degree in photography, shortly after which he left for London in pursuit of a photographic career as a fashion photographer. It was there that he met and was mentored by Roland Schenk, the charismatic art director on Management Today magazine, who offered him a job as a corporate photographer. The rest, as they say, is history. Brian was later considered 'the photographer of the decade' by the Guardian Newspaper in 1989; 'the most unpredictable and influential British portrait photographer of the last decades' by the British Journal of Photography in 2005 and 'one of Britain's most influential photographers' by the World Photography Organisation in 2015. In 1991, his book Work was awarded the ‘Best Photography Book in the World' prize at Barcelona Primavera Fotografica. Brian is patron of the Format Photography Festival in Derby; in September 2013, he received the ‘Centenary Medal' from the Royal Photographic Society in recognition of a lifetime achievement in photography; and in 2014 he received an Honorary Doctorate from Birmingham City University. Brian Griffin's photographs are held in the permanent collections of many major art institutions and he has published twenty or so books, including his latest, Pop which features some of the highlights of his album artwork and band photography from decades working in the music industry with such artists as Iggy Pop, Elvis Costello, Depeche Mode and Kate Bush. In other words, he's a bit of a legend. Frylock will do anything to beat Wayne "The Main Brain" McClain at bar trivia. ANYTHING. Frylock wants those bar dollars. "Well surely he wouldn't ludovico technique his friends over the course of a week, force feeding all the world's events except for sports into their brains, would he?" Wow, he actually does exactly that. You must have already seen this episode. I mean I assume you have if you listen to someone talk about Aqua Teen for over an hour every week. Super Trivia is the only time we see Wayne, played wonderfully by Seth MacFarlane. His voice is like a mix of Peter and Brian Griffin... but more cocky. If you want to hear more about Homer's friendship with Bill Jay mentioned in this episode and find out why and how Bill Jay was one of the most important people in the evolution of British photography at the end of the 20th Century you can by watching our feature length documentary on Jay's life featuring Homer, Martin Parr, Ralph Gibson, Paul Hill, Anna Ray-Jones, David Hurn, Alex Webb, Brian Griffin and Daniel Meadows here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wd47549knOU www.donotbendfilm.com You can read the review of Grant's latest book by Cary Benbow here www.fstopmagazine.com/blog/2019/12/book-review-new-ways-of-seeing-the-democratic-language-of-photography-by-grant-scott/ Homer Sykes was born in 1949 and is a Canadian-born British documentary photographer. He was a keen photographer as a teenager, with a darkroom both at home and at boarding school. In 1968 he started a three-year course at the London College of Printing (LCP), and during his first year, went to New York, where he was impressed by the work of photographers - Henri Cartier-Bresson, Bruce Davidson, Lee Friedlander, Robert Frank, Burk Uzzle and Garry Winogrand — that he saw at the Museum of Modern Art. Whilst considering a new photographic project at college, Sykes came across a story on the Britannia Coconut Dancers in an issue of In Britain magazine. This led him to research other local festivals in Britain at the archives of Cecil Sharp House, London. Sykes' photography of these festivals was inspired by that of Sir Benjamin Stone, but he approached them with a modern sensibility and a small-format camera, after absorbing advice from photographer David Hurn, then a part-time lecturer at LCP, as well as other photographers that he met through Hurn, including editor and writer Bill Jay. Sykes moved on to photographing news stories for the Weekend Telegraph, Observer, Sunday Times, Newsweek, Now, Time, and New Society. He worked with various agencies including from 1989 to 2005 with the influential Network Photographers. Sykes also photographed the British landscape for various books but always found time for his own projects including Hunting with Hounds, and On the Road Again, photographs of four North American road trips taken over three decades. Sykes has taught on the Master's course in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography at the London College of Communication and in 2014, the Maison de la photographie Robert Doisneau, Paris, held a major exhibition of Sykes' work from the 1970s. He photographed the glam rock, punk, new wave and other music/fashion scenes of Britain and his work has been consistently published as a series of short narratives by Cafe Royal Books and as a major monograph My British Archive: The Way We Were 1968-1983 by Dewis Lewis in 2018. Homer continues to document the British way of life today and lives in South-West London. www.homersykes.com Grant Scott is the founder/curator of United Nations of Photography, a Senior Lecturer and Subject Co-ordinator: Photography at Oxford Brookes University, Oxford, a working photographer, and the author of Professional Photography: The New Global Landscape Explained (Focal Press 2014) and The Essential Student Guide to Professional Photography (Focal Press 2015).
