In Nigeria, where trust is paramount, referrals hold even greater significance. However, the fear of "advance fee fraud" often makes people hesitant to answer calls from unknown numbers. This necessitates a strategic approach to referral outreach. My Referral Mishap: A Lesson Learned Recently, my sister-in-law offered to connect me with a potential collaborator for a TV show I'm working on. Excited, I messaged the individual but made a critical mistake: I didn't mention my sister-in-law's name. This oversight was a missed opportunity. Naming the person who made the referral instantly builds rapport, familiarity, and credibility. It's a simple yet powerful way to establish trust. The Right Approach: Text First, Then Call To maximize your referral success, I recommend the following strategy: * Send a Text Message First: Before calling, send a concise and engaging SMS or WhatsApp message. * Name-Drop the Referrer: Clearly state who made the introduction. This is crucial for building trust. * State Your Purpose: Briefly explain the reason for your outreach. * Confirm Interest: Ask if they're open to a brief call to discuss further. * Optimize Your WhatsApp Profile: Ensure your profile clearly communicates who you are and what you do. This helps build trust and credibility. By following these steps, you'll significantly increase the likelihood of your calls being answered. Don't Fear the Forgotten Tactics Even seasoned professionals, like myself, sometimes forget to apply best practices. The key is to acknowledge your mistakes, learn from them, and strive to improve. If you're new to referrals, consider creating a script or framework to guide your interactions. Beyond Referrals: Prospecting and Overcoming Objections In addition to referrals, I also discussed prospecting and handling age objections in my podcast. * Prospecting: This involves identifying potential clients, understanding where they congregate, and initiating conversations. * Age Objections: Sometimes, people may doubt your capabilities due to your age. My sister-in-law, a young trainer, faced this challenge. Handling Age Objections: Expertise and Confidence My sister-in-law's experience highlighted the importance of demonstrating expertise and confidence. When students questioned her age, she calmly asserted her knowledge and experience. She also made it clear that if age was a deal-breaker, they would have to find another instructor. This approach underscores the importance of addressing objections head-on. Don't shy away from difficult conversations. If someone has a problem with your age, it's better to address it upfront than to let it fester.
