Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 3 is widely considered the start of "good Trek" in the TNG era. Whether you agree with that or not, this season definitely ups the ante in terms of storytelling, characterization, thematic links, and philosophical import. This week, Aidan and Lindsay deep dive into the production history, some of the changes behind and in front of the camera, and explore the larger story arcs that are going to take us into the second half of the series' run. Between his questionable motives, ethical dubiousness, and deceitful ways, Q hardly qualifies as a stand-in for God. But does his interaction with Picard and the crew of the Enterprise in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Season 2, Episode 16, "Q Who?" nonetheless somewhat mirror the biblical story of Job? What are his motivations for wanting to join the crew? What are the implications—for good or ill—of his forcing a confrontation with the Borg? And what can we learn from Picard's appeal to Q in this episode? They dig deep into the episode's implications about humanity's place in the cosmos and relationship to the Divine, covering topics like prayer, monastic disciplines, and the courage it takes to say you have a name. In this episode Mark talks about one his favourite episodes of television and a universally considered fan-favourite episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" - Season 3, Episode 15: "Yesterday's Enterprise", which first aired during the week of February 19, 1990. The story of the episode involves the crew of the USS Enterprise-D encountering its time-traveling predecessor, the USS Enterprise-C, and having to entertain the possibility that to save the United Federation of Planets from being destroyed by the Klingon Empire the crew of the Enterprise-C must travel back in time on an ill-fated mission to fulfil their destiny and realise a prolonged period of peace with their mortal enemy. The episode saw the return of Denise Crosby as Lieutenant Tasha Yar, who had been killed in a previous episode of the series. Whoopi Goldberg also stars as the recurring and mysterious character Guinan, who is essential to the plot of the episode in guiding the decision of Captain Jean-Luc Picard (played by Patrick Stewart) to order the Enterprise-C back in time because its continued presence in the present was not supposed to happen and as a result of it traveling through time, unbeknownst to its crew, it created an alternate timeline to the one than was supposed to happen. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/markthepoet/message
We are back! This season of fraught production comes to a close with an episode that's not sure what its A or B plots are exactly, but at least we get some great-looking Warbirds. Picard is off getting some intel, and Data wants to look at some space trash ... which happens to have 3 Americans from the early 21st century in a cryogenic stasis. They died back then, but then Dr. Crusher wakes them up at the worst possible time as the Enterprise heads into the Romulan neutral zone to investigate destroyed outposts. Who destroyed them? Well, we'll find out! Jimmie G hosts and still doesn't understand what stardates or Nielsen ratings mean, Kate loves to hate the financier and the misogynist country music star, Greg misses old school disk drives, and Erik decodes what a "low mileage pit woofer" is. Hint: It's gross. Re:Engage will take a short break for a few weeks and return with the first episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 2 soon. Thank you for listening along with us. Human. Data learns a great deal about what it means to be human in his life, but he distills it so well in "Data's Day." His description of the interior existence of humanity not only tells us we are more than our DNA, but indicates the essential elements of how we become more fully human. These elements are not unlike the way Jesus grew and when we contemplate the full humanity of his incarnation, we can understand more of the Divinity available to ours. In these devotional segments, you are invited to make some sacred space and time. You might wish to light candles in a home Advent wreath. You might take a quiet moment alone, or with those you love. Whatever you do, I invite you to join me, every Sunday of Advent, as we seek out new life in the incarnation of Christ. After a short break, resident Star Trek Guru, Shaun brings us another primer. This time its Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 5. Be sure to send feedback if you are enjoying these or have something you’d like to add to the discussion. Enjoy!
It’s an episode of firsts! We examine the first time the holodeck ever appears in a CANON episode of Star Trek, in the series premiere of The Next Generation, while also watching the first time a version of the holodeck appears in The Animated Series, where it’s called “The Rec Room.” We discuss holodeck bug reports, “Chekhov’s rock,” the undercelebrated genius of a “Kirk is a Jerk” shirt, and go over the history of the holodeck as a concept and execution. The Enterprise’s least important officers meet for the first time in Ten Forward and try to figure out whether to suck up to Picard or Riker, how to get a permission slip to go down to Farpoint Station, and how many Enterprises there are during a saucer separation. We encourage you to watch “Encounter at Farpoint” from Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 1, Episode 1 and “The Practical Joker” from Star Trek: The Animated Series Season 2, Episode 3! Hosted by Darius Hamilton-Smith, Dylan Hamilton-Smith and Jan Lefrancois-Gijzen Computer Voice provided by Verona Blue Music by b o d y l i n e available on Bandcamp
On our first mission, we watch, analyze, and rate Star Trek: The Next Generation’s “A Fistful of Datas.” Is Worf a good dad? Is Data’s head port thing gross or... SUPER gross? Why do they call it the “Ancient” West and not the “Old” West? Does Reginald Barclay program holodeck porn? Plus, you'll meet some of the Enterprise-D’s least important officers as they have a meal in Ten Forward. We encourage you to watch “A Fistful of Datas” from Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 6, Episode 8! Hosted by Darius Hamilton-Smith, Dylan Hamilton-Smith and Jan Lefrancois-Gijzen Computer Voice provided by Verona Blue Music by b o d y l i n e available on Bandcamp
The primers continue for our ongoing isolation. Resident Star Trek Guru, Shaun brings us another one. This time its Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 4.
