Book Club #117 - Jokes Jokes Jokes - Richard talks to old Edinburgh flatmate Jenny Eclair about her cut-above-the-rest autobiography, Jokes, Jokes, Jokes. They discuss how you maintain a career in their weird business over several decades, the envy and bitterness that can eat you up, how getting older changes your priorities, how little either of them remember about Jenny Eclair Squats, how winning the Perrier award left Jenny feeling like a fraud, appearing (though not) in the Karma Chameleon video, being mistaken for Su Pollard, who really came up with the girl that smelled of spam and coping with death and becoming an orphan in your sixties and the lives of the aunts and uncles from the 1950s.Buy the book herehttps://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/jokes-jokes-jokes-my-very-funny-memoir-jenny-eclair/7648041?ean=9781408732052See RHLSTP recorded live - https://richardherring.com/rhlstp Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/rhlstp. Les Dennis is one of the country's most experienced and popular entertainers. With a career spanning several decades and a CV which boasts gameshow host, stand up comic, straight actor, reality tv star and musical theatre legend, it was not hard for Jess to find topics to chat about. In fact editing their lengthy conversation down to 45 minutes was the hardest part! Join them both as they chat time keeping, stage management and how Su Pollard managed to escape from Woking shopping centre.
Stuart Linden Rhodes is the photographer behind the @linden_archives, a fascinating record of queer nightlife in the UK's north. During the pandemic, I start finding photos in my Instagram feed showing legends like Lily Savage, Su Pollard, and a pre-Spice Mel B, alongside a host of gay clubbers and allies dancing on sticky floors and tearing up the night. Like many others, it felt like I had a window into an era I completely understood, but hadn't directly taken part in myself.Stuart was a school teacher by day and a photographer by night, commissioned by publications like Gay Times to document queer nocturnal activity across the North and Midlands of England. The negatives gathered dust in storage until the pandemic, when the world finally found them. We discuss music by Candi Staton, Bette Midler, and the Pet Shop Boys. You can purchase Stuart's first book, Out & About with Linden, right here. Kathy and Shiv, the thrusting Claptrap duo since 2016, point their thrust washwards in this unfocused and entirely incomplete update of all things laundry. Expect references to Uncle Phil, Su Pollard and Mr Blobby. This episode contains copious references to nuts, just in case you have an allergy. Shiv is also regretful she forgot to tell her Calgon story.
Our new series starts with eighties classic Hi-de-Hi!, which means we finally get to deal with Jimmy Perry and David Croft. We also look at the principal actors, including Su Pollard and Ruth Madoc.
In the lead up to Eid-al-Fitr Muslims are not eating or drinking water during daylight hours. There are some Muslims who feel they cannot break the fast with their family this Ramadan - many of those identify as LGBTQ+. Some charities and organisations have been holding events to make sure they can share an Iftar with others. We hear from the events' organisers. UN Special Rapporteur for Afghanistan, Richard Bennett, speaks about what its like for ethnic and religious minorities in the country and what plans are to protect people. It's Easter in the Orthodox tradition and people of Russian and Ukrainian heritage will be standing side by side in worship in churches across the UK. The Russian Orthodox Church has allied itself with President Vladimir Putin, echoing Kremlin rhetoric in defending the invasion of Ukraine. However, Bishop Irenei of London and Western Europe says that: 'warfare is always a sign of man's degradation'. BBC Two's Pilgrimage is back on screens. The religious reality TV series sees celebrities take on a spiritual journey through Portugal. One of the contributors is actor Su Pollard, who was raised in the Church of England and will be telling Edward Stourton about the journey. There are renewed tensions in Iran as the government has stepped up its crackdown on women not wearing the hijab. The law is being widely flouted, but in the last week it emerged that surveillance cameras are being used to identify unveiled women. Last year there were nationwide protests after the death in custody of 22 year old Mahsa Amini, who was arrested for not wearing her hijab properly. It is now understood that a fresh wave of demonstrations is planned. As well as the hijab issue, there is also growing discontent over levels of poverty in the country. We hear the latest news from Iran and some expert analysis. Jurors who take a religious oath themselves are more likely to find a defendant who doesn't swear by almighty God guilty of an offence, according to a recent study published by Royal Holloway University of London. Should that mean swearing religious oaths in court be abolished or replaced completely with something more secular? There is a discussion with the study's author and an Anglican vicar who has a legal background. Since it's Christmas and it's been a while since we could all enjoy regular live shows, Hannah, Mick and Jen have each chosen a favourite gigcast from, dare we say, better times, and they're all corkers. Yes, you did read the title correctly, and yes, we did, at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2018, gather together on stage Luisa Omielan, Janeane Garofalo and SU POLLARD, alongside the boss, Sarah Millican. What follows in this podcast is absolute carnage, of the best possible kind, as Su reveals the contents of her tiny suitcase, and our esteemed panel chat tit-covering trousers, bums, and Cher, among other things.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/standardissuespodcast. Jeffrey Holland is Sitcom Royalty, You could say Hi De Hi and it wouldn't be the first time he'd heard that in the street and if you think it started airing on TV 41 years ago, Jeffrey's face hasn't really changed in that time. I guess when we see people pop on and off our TV screens they become part of our family, they're in our homes with us during a cuppa tea or a roast dinner, your sat with your favourite people or family and popular sitcoms such as Hi de hi, only fools and horses, one foot in the grave, they're there to make the whole family laugh together, that is the family's first Comedy Club together and the first theatre for the family is pantomime. So we have a lot to thank Mr Holland for, he has appeared in so many of our favourites including Hi de hi as Spike Dixon, You rang m'lord as James Twelve trees, Cecil parkin in oh Doctor Beeching and he has been in Are you being served, It aint arf hot mum and dads army. His face would be so recognisable throughout the 80's and 90's due to his part in the Russ Abbot TV Shows, Les Dennis and Kenny Everett TV Shows and if you have seen pantomime in the past 50 years you would probably have seen Jeffrey on the bill. I saw him with Keith Harris, Nigel Havers, Julian Clary and Joan Collins at the Birmingham Hippodrome, I mean what a show that was. I'll let Jeffrey tell you the rest, Welcome to E&T VOV Jeffrey Holland

All is back to normal with brand new subjects and a new segment too. Why do they end up resenting Su Pollard and what happened in the UK in March 1982? Tune in and find out for yourselves
Big news in Leicester and Lincoln - The fall of the Berlin Wall and the Braunstone Wall. Weird things in Russia, back page sports news and chicken on pizza questioned. Brian Clough and Su Pollard mentioned (again). Tyson out of retirement to fight. Laurence Olivier dies, Dear Larry. The internet was invented (again). Satire, humour and comedy genius are absent but it's another fun hour taking a nostalgic journey through the past with The Rotten Retro Time Machine. A bumbling, yet detailed pass through the notable, or less notable, moments of 1979 which included flying lawnmowers in New York, robots killing humans, Carry On Survival with Peter Butterworth, the (probable) invention of the 'willy warmer' and the worst (or best) sacking ever. Jen chats to Su about mental health, ageing stars, wedding singers and upsetting passengers from the mighty Harwich Ferry. And parrots, obviously. John says Hi-de-Hi to the one and only SU POLLARD. He doesn't need to say much at all. She's in great form.

Once Archie's bloody prolapse has been dealt with, again, thoughts turn to an unfortunate incident when a casting couch came in to play. Meanwhile Su Pollard is proving to be less erotic than she should be!Follow the chaps on Twitter- @ArchieAndReg or on Facebook at once!
If you’ve ever had the pleasure to meet Peter Keogh and Sacha Mahboub, you are immediately struck by the immense love they have for each other. They complete each other. Witty and caustic banter always ensues, finishing each other’s sentences and stories, and all fuelled by an intrinsic adoration of showbiz and gossip. They recently tied the knot, having to wait until the marriage equality bill was finally passed. Both gentleman are in their 70’s. While clearly infatuated by each other, the journey to the alter has also been travelled on paths of personal pain and trauma for both. The theatre has been a salvation and an oasis.Between the two of them they have covered practically every role they can in the theatre - box office, model, actor, dancer, dresser, host, wardrobe supervisor, author and producers. They have counted the greats amongst their friends and recall with great fondness the Hollywood royalty of Debbie Reynolds. The relationship began when the MGM star responded to a fan later sent by an enthusiastic young boy from Perth. The Movie Star eventually became an employee of the pair - and a treasured friend. It is a wonderful life and these two continue to navigate it with wicked humour, eternal resilience and tremendous love.Be warned - this conversation is peppered with much laughter, saucy humour and heavy lashings of gossip. The Stages podcast is available in iTunes, Spotify and Whooshkaa.

In this gigcast, we got Hannah Dunleavy, Sarah Millican, Luisa Omielan, Janeane Garofalo and Su Pollard onstage to see what would happen. Crikey. There’s tit-covering trousers, a dearth of condoms, a blast of Madonna and a frankly hilarious bum story. We recorded this gigcast back in August in Edinburgh at The Stand Comedy Club as part of our Edinburgh Fringe run. It was even more deliciously bonkers than we expected. And we’re the people who decided to get Su Pollard and Janeane Garofalo in the same room. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
