We're so happy to welcome back bestselling author Mark Manson to give more life advice that doesn't suck. We're discussing the truth about happiness – that there is no “formula” for it, why “getting rid” of your problems isn't the answer, and recognizing delusional positivity. In terms of relationships, we talk about how you and your partner's strengths and weaknesses counterbalance each other, how conflict strengthens a healthy relationship, and what you can be doing right now to improve your dating life. Mark also turns the tables on us and asks how the podcast has changed our dating life, and he shares his own wild cheating story, which leads us to our final discussion about post traumatic growth (how a lot of people end up thriving after a traumatic incident). Before Mark joins us, we talk about more changes in Rayna's life (hint: porn and pedicures), Ashley's DMV journey, and how we got in trouble in high school. We also spill some tea on someone Rayna ran into and who texted Ashley. Enjoy! Mark Manson, the author of popular books like The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck and Everything Is F*cked: A Book About Hope, presents a well-researched and practical approach to what he refers to as "the crisis of self-actualization." In contrast to other self-help experts, Mark avoids offering quick fixes or elaborate systems. Instead, he provides a straightforward and rational examination of one's life, incorporating scientific evidence and insights from both Eastern and Western philosophies. One of the most common questions I have heard through my decades of working with people impacted by the disease of addiction is, "why is my love not enough?" I have heard this from parents, partners, children, and siblings. The person with the disease asks, "Why is my love for ------- not enough to keep me clean?"Today Madeleine Dean and Harry Cunnane, the authors of 'Under Our Roof,' share more about their story and the importance of giving back, how powerful this disease is, and that there are no lost causes. Hope is vital and sometimes feels evasive.Another exciting part of this episode is learning about the Children's Book, 'You Are Always Loved' they wrote and how it came to be created! I am a huge advocate for educating our children, and this book offers a fantastic opportunity for adults to have conversations about difficult things and emotions.Click here to grab a copy of Healthy Strategies for Family Members to Cope and Even Thrive Through Addiction and receive my weekly newsletter.Click the links below to follow me on social media:FacebookInstagramLinkedIn#embracefamilyrecovery #podcast #CongresswomanMadeleineDean #HarryCunnane #authors #UnderOurRoof #YouAreAlwaysLoved #motherandson #childrensbook #recovery #addiction #addictionrecovery #addictionawareness #addictiontreatment #addictions #familyrecovery #familyrecoverycoach #familyrecoverycoaching #familyaddiction #familyaddictionrecovery #recoverysupport #recoverysupportgroup #recoverysupportservices

Three #1 New York Times bestsellers. Nearly twenty million books sold. One of the most popular self-development blogs in the world. What more could Mark Manson take on? As of this week, movie stardom. Suppose you're a fan of Mark'sThe Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck (or his follow-up book, Everything's F*cked: A Book About Hope). In that case, I predict you'll LOVE how Universal Pictures depicts this beloved counterintuitive approach to living a good life from page to screen. It was a blast for me to have Mark on the show finally. As you'll see, despite his success, he's still a humble guy. Quick to laugh and talk freely about the crap we creatives all experience. Including some extreme things few of us will face that he and I share. As a former ghostwriter (who co-authored a NYT bestseller with a man who experienced a tragic public fall), I've wanted to take Mark aside and ask him a few things confidentially. Why Mark? He was Will Smith's writer for Will, the 2021 memoir Oprah called the best memoir she'd ever read. You know, before the slap. I didn't intend to ask Mark anything about that on the record. Still, I'm glad I got the vibe to take the chance. Same for other topics, from the difficulty of recording our audiobooks to the weirdness of becoming well-known to keeping a marriage strong when one or both people are workaholics. Can I get an eff-yeah!Happy New Year, friend. Thank you for another great year of shared book love. May 2023 bring us all a whole lot more magic than mayhem. Linda xo (aka Book Mama)

Mark Manson is the author of two great books I've read.. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k, and Everything Is F**ked: A Book About Hope. They were New York Times bestsellers, which sold over 13 million copies. These days, like everyone else, he podcasts, and he has an interesting take on social media - which intrigued me given my recent battle with Facebook and how annoying I think tech giants are. I am deeply suspect of their algorithms which just capture people into their own little echo chambers. Anyway, Manson argues that everything we say about social media being bad - is not actually social media's fault. He reckons it's the user's problem. He says it's about how we use it. So is this true? Can we dip in and out as we please, set personal boundaries, limit our exposure and keep social media a healthy space? It might be a good time to reassess this given how much awful news we're consuming online at the moment. I for one, cannot read enough on Ukraine, it absolutely breaks my heart, it leaves me devastated, and yet I can't stop reading about it. And the fact I'm seeking that news out means the algorithms will send more of it my way - and if I'm not careful my feed will be awash with nothing but war. So whose fault's that? Mine? Or Instagram's? It poses an interesting question. Is social media responsible for all society's ills or not? Obviously, Manson argues not. He says social media is a simple dynamic of a three-tiered network. Creators (or influencers), engagers, and lurkers. The creators are the people who feel passionately about stuff and are confident enough to post about it and create the content, the engagers are the ones who form tribes around these people because they appreciate the sentiment, like the way the creator's framed it, they identify with that narrative, and they'll defend the creator and engage with them. Lurkers are too busy to bother commenting or engaging or creating, they're scrolling mindlessly while also cooking dinner or changing a nappy, they care less. It's these 3 groups he says, who make up the bulk of social media users. Of course, the largest group is the one outside of social media – the silent majority. Disturbingly though, Manson argues the people who've been screwed over the most by social media are those who work in mainstream media. He says we've been ‘screwed sideways' by it. It's become our information channel, our source of all reporting. He says we follow it, target controversy, look for moral panic, and report it back, thus, feeding the monster. We're looking to supply content quickly, and he argues that's overtaken our ability to use time to search for facts, so he says our culture gets shifted to extremes, as we look to shift awareness. He argues in general we all need to push our perceptions back to a more mature understanding of social media. Because as he says, social media hasn't corrupted us, it's merely revealed who we always were.

"Whatever it is in your life that you're most afraid to do, that causes you the most amount of anxiety — usually, that's the exact thing that you need to be doing." - Mark Manson Why can't you create an algorithmic process for happiness? How does freedom require limitation? Why are the things you're willing to sacrifice more important than the things you want? How can you set goals that are intrinsic, not extrinsic? Why are people so distrustful and tribal right now? Go Ahead, Help Yourself! Mark Manson didn't plan to be a best-selling author. He certainly didn't plan to be in the self-development space. But when you're a thoughtful voice on the internet, people start asking you for advice. Three books and 13 million copies later, it's clear that it's pretty good advice. Mark's best-sellers, “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck” and “Everything Is F*cked: A Book About Hope” provide a researched, grounded approach to what he calls "the crisis of self-actualization." Unlike other self-help books, Mark doesn't offer systems or a quick fix. The path he lays out is a straightforward, common-sense evaluation of your life, based on scientific evidence and drawing on philosophy from Eastern and Western traditions. It's like talking about life with an old friend — an old friend who's up-to-date on all the latest research. The Struggle is Real One of the foundational arguments of Mark's book is that happiness isn't just given. Meaning is earned through trial and tribulation. As Mark puts it, "There's not a single thing that you're proud of that didn't require some degree of struggle or sacrifice. It's a one-to-one relationship." This may seem counterintuitive — that to be happy, you have to go through something difficult — but Mark says if we compare it to things outside of our emotional lives, it makes sense. "To have a healthy body, you have to constantly put it through stress and strain. To have a healthy career, you have to consistently surmount and overcome challenges. So it's like in every other aspect of life. We just understand it as obvious that you need struggle to progress." Giving Up Another seemingly counterintuitive message that Mark preaches is that to gain, you need to sacrifice. This can be true with freedom, as he found out himself after traveling the world. "One of the things I discovered is, I believe that freedom requires limitation. Freedom is not meaningful unless there's some sort of limitation that you put on yourself." In fact, these sacrifices are key to finding your way. Mark says it's not the things that we want that make us unique. We're all working towards essentially the same stuff: a nice house, a good car, a loving relationship, security, a few material knickknacks. What makes us different from the next person is the type of things we're willing to sacrifice. "Find problems you enjoy having. That's essentially what happiness is: finding the struggle that enlivens you, makes you excited to get up in the morning, that feels meaningful." Key takeaways: Any exceptional behavior will be polarizing. To make a difference, you're going to make some people mad. Find the problems you enjoy having. We all want the same things; what makes us different is what we're willing to put up with along the way. Go towards what you're afraid of. Big changes make us nervous, but sometimes big changes are exactly what we need. Tracey Williams, a Service Design Director for Absa Bank in South Africa, discusses learning service design on the job, growing design skills on her team, and building organizational service design standards with Dawan Stanford, your podcast host. Show Summary Tracey's career didn't begin in design; she started in financial services, and went through a graduate program focused on business targets and goals. She'd always had an interest in problem-solving, and while working at Absa, she got involved in numerous projects that she found new and exciting outside of her specific role. She had studied marketing, and found that much of the old-school marketing thinking aligned with some of the thinking in design spaces. She submitted an idea to a social entrepreneurship course and was accepted. Tracey then proceeded to learn service design and design thinking as she led her team through development of the idea. Her biggest challenge during the project was using the tools of design, which were still new to her; she had to learn through doing, and through failure and then trying again. She learned that design is about looking at a problem from a different perspective. Tracey hosted the first Absa Women Forum at the Wentworth Angels headquarters to celebrate the role of single mothers and women. Listen in to learn: How Tracey developed her design skills What service design skills she has learned on her job Why she was called a design “Padawan” Who Tracey is bringing onto her team for service design How Tracey is developing new designers at Absa What she wishes more people understood about her work How she protects her work from being devoured by the larger system Books Tracey used to learn service design on the job Our Guest's Bio Tracey is a designer with seven years of experience in financial services. She is currently a Service Design Director for the Absa Bank Design Office, where she has played a key role in establishing and demonstrating the value of Service Design. Her teams have worked across different areas of the business and engaged with several stakeholders along the way, including those in Relationship Banking, Business Banking, Card, and most recently, Home Loans. She enjoys working with cross-functional teams to solve complex, wicked problems with solutions that address both customers' needs and meet the business objectives. Beyond the delivery of design work, she has a passion for developing young talent and worked with a colleague to start the first design graduate program at the bank focused on transforming and growing its future design leaders. Show Highlights [02:33] How Tracey became involved in banking projects early on in her career. [03:43] Tracey's experiences in a social entrepreneurship course. A fateful moment in Kyle Mooney's life was when his high school hip hop group went up in flames. Quite literally. All his equipment was destroyed in a fire. Lacking an outlet for his creativity, Kyle gravitated toward improv and making digital videos, two skills that would eventually land him on Saturday Night Live. Kyle tells Marc his SNL story (of course) and talks about the fulfillment of making his first feature film, Brigsby Bear. He also explains why he likes going for human reactions in comedy as opposed to the inherently funny ones, which explains the tone and humor of a lot of his videos.
