This week, a conversation with Thorin Klosowski of the Electronic Frontier Foundation about some basic tools and ideas for keeping our information a little safer online and the Surveillance Self-Defense site, ssd.eff.org . We discuss device encryption, tor-browser, vpns, encrypted messaging apps like WhatsApp, Signal and Telegram as well as password vaults. I'm hoping this'll be the first of a few interviews to try to make digital security concepts a little more accessible. Joining the podcast this week is Eva Galperin, Director of Cybersecurity for the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF). She is also the co-founder of the Coalition Against Stalkerware and has long been a champion for providing privacy and security for vulnerable populations around the world. “What is stalkerware?” many may ask. Stalkerware is considered a more personal way of invading someone's privacy such as using malware to track a person's activity on a device. Eva shares insights from her many years on the frontlines of digital privacy both educating the broader population on how to protect oneself while also navigating the labyrinth of new regulations and laws being created that impact digital privacy of the future. Be sure to visit StopStalkerware.org to learn more! Eva Galperin is EFF's Director of Cybersecurity Prior to 2007, when she came to work for EFF, Eva worked in security and IT in Silicon Valley and earned degrees in Political Science and International Relations from SFSU. Her work is primarily focused on providing privacy and security for vulnerable populations around the world. To that end, she has applied the combination of her political science and technical background to everything from organizing EFF's Tor Relay Challenge, to writing privacy and security training materials (including Surveillance Self Defense and the Digital First Aid Kit), and publishing research on malware in Syria, Vietnam, Lebanon, and Kazakhstan. Since 2018, she has worked on addressing the digital privacy and security needs of survivors or domestic abuse. She is also a co-founder of the Coalition Against Stalkerware. If you live in a state where abortions have been banned since the overturn of Roe v. Wade, accessing abortion is a huge challenge. But unfortunately, access is not the only challenge -- pursuing an abortion without leaving a trace poses another huge hurdle. If you search for resources online, if you get in your car and travel, who you text, if you ship pills to your house -- will the state find out? In our daily lives, many of our actions are tracked for consumption and utilization by various companies and organizations. That data could now be used against you if you seek an abortion. We are used to hearing people shrug off data surveillance concerns. The saying from digital privacy naysayers goes: if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear. But now, we maybe have something new to hide, and therefore maybe something new to fear. Today, we are digging into data privacy in a post-Roe world and learning both what we individually can do to best keep our data safe and what we can ask of data collectors and government officials to help us in our pursuit of privacy. Joining us is Jennifer Granick, Surveillance and Cybersecurity Counsel, for the ACLU's Speech, Privacy, and Technology Project. The Russian invasion of Ukraine is a fast moving situation that's changing every moment. We know that there's no way we can keep up with the on-the-ground movements of the Russian troops, the Ukrainian military trying to stop them, or what's been happening to the citizens of Ukraine caught up in it all. Unless you're completely cynical and only get your news from Joe Rogan because, you'll know that in March and April of 2021, Putin began massing troops and vehicles near the Ukrainian border. This caught everyone's attention because the last time Putin built up troops like this was in 2014, when he used them to annex the Crimea region from Ukraine. Calling his invasion a “special military operation” is just one way Putin has tried to crowd the field with disinformation. From the beginning of his troop buildup on Ukraine's border, he tried to give it cover by calling it a training exercise or justifying it somehow as a normal military operation. There are infowars being waged by pro-Russian and pro-Ukrainian sources. In the case of Ukraine, there seems to be much less interest, directly from the Ukrainian state, in disinformation campaigns than from the Russian state. The pro-Ukrainian narratives are a mix of Ukrainian and third-party propaganda, which spread like wildfire on social media with pithy quotes that may or may not have been said. We tell our search engines a lot of very personal things. They arguably know more about us than our best friends and significant others do. A history of your search terms can reveal so much about you, especially when viewed over the course of days, months and even years. And unfortunately, companies like Google use this privileged position to better target us with advertisements. This may seem innocuous, today's guest, Kelly Finnerty, will explain how this data collection can lead to some truly creepy outcomes and even emotional harm. But it doesn't have to be that way. There are search engines and other tools that don't track your history and sell you out. And there is hope for a brighter, privacy-respecting future. Kelly Finnerty is the director of brand for Startpage, a global privacy technology company that provides search and browsing products that protect people's personal data. If you've ever had the feeling that someone is eavesdropping on your calls, reading your messages or emails, and even knows where you've been going, you just might be right. Abusers often utilize stalkerware to control and manipulate their targets. Being educated on what it is, how it got there, how to clean it off your devices, and where to go for help can make a world of difference. Today's guest is Eva Galperin. Eva is the Director of Cybersecurity at The Electronic Frontier Foundation. She has worked in security and IT in Silicon Valley and earned degrees in Political Science and International Relations. She has applied the combination of her poli-sci and technical backgrounds to everything including organizing EFF's TOR relay challenge to writing privacy and security training manuals. Those include Surveillance Self-Defense and The Digital First Aid Kit. Show Notes: [1:21] - On her way to law school, Eva began working for Electronic Frontier Foundation and decided not to leave. She has worked in nearly every department. [2:22] - Having worked in tech since a teen, Eva had a lot of experience with stalkerware. But she shares the reason why she was driven to research it further. [4:02] - Through her own research and trials, Eva found that anti-virus apps did not protect against stalkerware. [5:21] - Eva explains how abusers could react to stalkerware being removed from a device and leaves the decision up to the survivor on how and when to remove it. [6:30] - There are companies that are now paying more attention to stalkerware. Eva explains that this is a good thing, but also believes that it is because there has been an increase in the use of stalkerware. [7:24] - The most recent report of stalkerware being detected by antivirus programs indicates a range of 60-95% as compared to only 10% a few years ago. [8:33] - In cases of domestic abuse, an abuser has physical access to a device and can install stalkerware without the survivor even knowing. [10:10] - Spouses and partners having access to each other's devices and knowing passwords is very common in modern relationships. [11:22] - Eva recommends stalkerware detection apps for Android and Apple. [13:01] - Chris and Eva discuss Windows and Mac OS stalkerware. [14:32] - What is the difference between account compromise and device compromise? Eva says the more common problem is account compromise. [16:01] - Eva recommends different and long passwords for each account you have as well as having two factor authorization turned on. She explains how this works. [18:09] - Eva's advice for consumers is to meet them where they are. [19:13] - You should go into your account settings and look for the page that lists devices and IP addresses that have logged into your account if you feel something is going on. [21:32] - Personal trackers that are meant for people to keep track of their belongings are essentially a gift to stalkers. [23:11] - Regarding personal trackers, Eva shares that she has gotten some pushback on the abuse of these tools. [24:32] - Software that allows you to do this without notifying the user so that they do not know that they are being watched is in and of itself abusive. [26:01] - It is sad to see when people who have been abused feel that the only way they can take back power is to abuse as well. [27:33] - Resetting to factory settings for most forms of device compromise is sufficient but you also need to change your account passwords and disable iCloud backups. [28:51] - Eva loves open source for personal use, but as a general rule she doesn't recommend it due to her security background. [29:52] - If your cameras are compromised, covering the camera is a viable security measure. Covering microphones is trickier. [30:43] - Chris and Eva discuss hackers hacking webcams, using blackmail photos, and sextortion emails. [33:01] - Sometimes the extortion emails can confuse people severely enough to believe the scam. [34:26] - Evan recommends the NNEDV and Operation Safe Escape for those looking for support. In the second half of my interview with the EFF’s Lindsay Oliver and Jason Kelley, we talk about how these draconian surveillance systems put several students at a distinct disadvantage and how the teacher themselves feel about all of this. How might all of this normalize surveillance for young people? Can the invisible hand of the market resolve some of these issues? What should the policies be around proctoring and the use of these surveillance apps? How can we push back and demand change most effectively? Lindsay Oliver is the Project Manager for EFF’s activism team, and works on the self-help resource Surveillance Self-Defense, Security Education Companion, and student privacy. Jason Kelley guides EFF’s social media tactics and develops EFF’s online digital advocacy, and writes about various forms of governmental and private surveillance and tracking. In this time of COVID19, we've all had to learn to work and learn from home. But how do our bosses know we're not screwing around instead of working? How do our teachers know we're not cheating? It turns out that they're both willing to go to extremely intrusive measures to try to figure that out. Home and mobile device surveillance technology is booming thanks to this global pandemic, as we will learn from talking to the EFF's Lindsay Oliver and Jason Kelley. Today's episode features the amazing Eva Galperin, and we're talking about stalkerware, surveillance and Tik Tok. Back in 2018, Eva tweeted "“If you are a woman who has been sexually abused by a hacker who threatened to compromise your devices, contact me and I will make sure they are properly examined”. Her tweet was retweeted more than 10,000 times, and she was inundated with responses from people who had experienced abuse. We talk about her work to eradicate stalkerware, and what she's working on in her role heading up the Threat Lab at the Electronic Frontier Foundation. Eva is Electronic Frontier Foundation's Director of Cybersecurity. Prior to 2007, Eva worked in security and IT in Silicon Valley and earned degrees in Political Science and International Relations from SFSU. In today's show I have a sobering discussion with the EFF's Eva Galperin about the rise of stalkerware (sometimes called "spouseware"). It's become all too easy for abusive, unscrupulous people to spy on their significant others, tracking their every move, monitoring all their communications. We'll talk about how our phones can be subverted and what measures you can take to prevent it. Eva also provides practical and prudent advice for people who suspect they may be victims of stalkerware. Eva Galperin is EFF's Director of Cybersecurity. Prior to 2007, when she came to work for EFF, Eva worked in security and IT in Silicon Valley and earned degrees in Political Science and International Relations from SFSU. Her work is primarily focused on providing privacy and security for vulnerable populations around the world. To that end, she has applied the combination of her political science and technical background to everything from organizing EFF's Tor Relay Challenge, to writing privacy and security training materials (including Surveillance Self Defense and the Digital First Aid Kit), and publishing research on malware in Syria, Vietnam, Kazakhstan. When she is not collecting new and exotic malware, she practices aerial circus arts and learning new languages. In second half of my interview with EFF's Bill Budington, Bill helps us understand how we can at least attempt to disguise ourselves on the web and basically try to blend in with the crowd. We'll also see how tools like EFF's Panopticlick can hep us pinpoint the things that are making us stand out, which enables us to be tracked more easily. Finally, we'll discuss several browsers and plugins that can help you preserve your privacy. If you missed Part 1, you can listen to it here: http://podcast.firewallsdontstopdragons.com/2019/03/10/enter-the-panopticon-pt1/. Guest Bio: Bill is a Senior Staff Technologist at the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF). He works on privacy and security-enhancing projects, such as the HTTPS Everywhere browser add-on and Panopticlick, a tool that alerts users users to how vulnerable they are to browser tracking. He has also contributed to projects such as Let's Encrypt and SecureDrop. Further Info: Is your browser giving you away? In the first part of my discussion with Bill Budington from the EFF, we're going to talk about some of the key ways in which we are tracked around the web as we surf from site to site. I'll ask Bill who is tracking up, why they're tracking us, and we'll get into some of the clever and downright devious methods by which we are tracked and recognized on the web. In part 2 (next week) Bill will help us understand why it's so hard to disguise ourselves on the web and how tools like EFF's Panopticlick can show us what's going on under the covers. We'll also offer up some solutions or at least mitigations for all this tracking. Guest Bio: Bill is a Senior Staff Technologist at the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF). While you have some down time over the holidays, it’s a great opportunity to learn something new. I humbly suggest some cybersecurity and privacy “homework” that is both entertaining and educational! Like watching documentaries? Maybe you prefer to curl up by the fire with a good book? I’ve got you covered! In the news this week, we have yet another staggeringly large data breach - though it’s not clear whether the bad guys found it before it was locked down. Is your iPhone 6 or 7 running slower than it used to? You may not be imagining it - Apple did it on purpose, and I explain why. From front-page news stories featuring transcripts of wiretapped campaign officials to dramatic cyberattacks using hacking tools stolen from the National Security Agency, intelligence and surveillance issues have saturated the news in 2017. Yet there were also plenty of important surveillance stories that didn't get the exposure they deserved: the ongoing debate over reauthorizing the NSA's controversial section 702 spying authority, set to expire at year's end; the Supreme Court's pending consideration of Carpenter v. United States, which could radically alter the contours of Fourth Amendment law; law enforcement's growing reliance on sophisticated data mining to attempt to identify criminals or terrorists before they act. The Cato Institute's annual surveillance conference will gather prominent experts, policymakers, technologists, and civil society advocates to explore these issues and more—and debate how much monitoring we should accept in a society that aspires to be both safe and free.
