Inflation and the broader cost-of-living crisis are allegedly taking an immense financial and mental toll on South Africa's domestic workers. This as nearly half ( about 46%) of domestic workers in the country are said to still earn less than the legally prescribed minimum wage . This is one of the findings of SweepSouth's annual survey on the compensation and working conditions of domestic workers released yesterday. SweepSouth, which launched in June 2014, began with a simple yet deep goal. In this episode: THE IDEALISTS. speaks with Aisha Pandor, co-founder and CEO of SweepSouth, Africa's first online platform for booking, managing and paying for home cleaning services (think Uber for home cleaners). Aisha is one of Africa's top female tech startup CEOs to have raised over $20M, as well as, a former scientist who completed her PhD in Human Genetics at the University of Cape Town. A story we love about Aisha is while writing her PhD thesis, she also completed a Postgraduate Business Administration course… coming first in class in that course and becoming the first student to graduate from the University with two separate qualifications from two different faculties, on the same day. As you can imagine, Aisha is a force to be reckoned with. What we learned: While bootstrapping her company, Aisha and her husband sold off every asset they owned (home, furniture, car, etc.) and moved back into her parent's home. They ended up staying for three years. In this episode, Aisha details the sacrifices she made to build SweepSouth, while balancing her internal monologue that she has no right to feel challenged because her ancestors who fought apartheid sacrificed worse. Now, she is on a path of unlocking her inner self while helping her team lean into their own self-awareness. Join the conversation about THE IDEALISTS. and break*through. TechCentral — In this episode of the podcast, TechCentral editor Duncan McLeod is joined by Alen Ribic, co-founder - with his wife, Aisha Pandor - of SweepSouth, the on-demand home cleaning company that last year raised R30-million in a funding round from Naspers. Ribic talks about the challenges of starting and running a business with a spouse, how SweepSouth coped with the lockdown, which prevented its on-demand cleaners from working, and the fund that was created to support cleaners during this time. The fund has already raised more than R9-million and backers include Dell founder Michael Dell and his wife Susan. The conversation then turns to what SweepSouth has done since the Naspers investment, including expansion into Kenya and the recent launch of SweepSouth Connect, a new marketplace that connects vetted professionals to people needing those services in their local area. It's a great discussion with the co-founder of one of South Africa's most successful start-ups - don't miss it!
Adrian Moisey, former VP of Engineering at SweepSouth, and now Salesloft engineer, is a huge advocate for attending tech meetups. As one of the organisers of Cape Town’s DevOpsDays, he’s learned that the way a conference is set up affects the value people get out of it. Using his experience organising DevOpsDays conferences, he shares how he thinks about creating 10x value. He talks about speaker-sponsor-attendee value through mingling, putting together a curated line-up of speakers, and leveraging the ‘open spaces’ model to create engaged conversation amongst attendees.Read the blog post here!-----------If you are keen to learn more about DevOps, two books that Adrian recommends are:“The DevOps Handbook: The DevOps Handbook: How to Create World-Class Agility, Reliability, and Security in Technology Organizations”, by Gene Kim. A book about DevOps (as the title suggests!), but with examples of specific, technical DevOps practices and stories in action.“The Phoenix Project: The Phoenix Project: A Novel about IT, DevOps, and Helping Your Business Win 5th Anniversary Edition”, by Gene Kim, Kevin Behr, and George Spafford. This is great for people who are in upper management, and who might see what's happening on the ground but aren’t necessarily that involved with the technical side of DevOps.
In today's business headlines: President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that the Government is going to bail out Eskom. Gold has surged to its highest level in five years after the US Fed signals turned dovish. Naspers has made its first local tech investment in SweepSouth, a cleaning service business. Group Five says shareholders are not getting anything out of the rescue process. Lord Peter Hain says the international community should bring back the money looted by the Guptas.

The Department of Labour continues to brief and educate employers and employees on the new national minimum wage (NMW) which is set to come into effect from 1 May 2018. The Law Focus show seeks answers on the implementation of this new wage as well as the working rights of domestic workers. The show talks to a researcher at the Socio-Economic Rights Institute of South Africa, Kelebogile Khunou about the history of domestic work and why it continues to be exploitive. Even with the anticipated wage increase domestic workers will earn only 75% of the NMW of R3, 500 due to the higher risk of unemployment if the minimum wage is too high. CEO of SweepSouth, Aisha Pandor and the South African Domestic Service and Allied Workers Union's organiser, Gloria Kente both agree that the minimum wage is disgracefully low.
