Jonathan and James are excited about today's episode, the first in a series discussing Albert Martin's monumental three-volume work on pastoral theology, aptly titled Pastoral Theology - The Man of God: His Calling and Godly Life. Albert Martin was one of the founding pastors of Trinity Baptist Church in Montville, NJ, where he served for 46 years. During his time there, he taught pastoral theology at the Trinity Ministerial Academy from 1978 to 1998. Many expressed their desire to see these lectures printed, and after years of work, Trinity Pulpit Press is pleased to present the 3-volume series. Jonathan and James are honored to be joined by David Chanski, Pastor Martin's successor at Trinity Baptist Church and his stepson, to discuss this monumental work. Discover the significance of discerning a true call to ministry, the character, and spiritual formation necessary for a pastor, and the invaluable insights these books provide for both current and aspiring ministers. And be sure to tune in for the next two episodes of this series! A sustained effectiveness in pastoral ministry will generally be realized in direct proportion to the health and vigor of the redeemed humanity of the man of God. – Albert Martin Thanks to the generosity of Trinity Book Service, we are pleased to offer a copy of the 3-volume set, Pastoral Theology - The Man of God: His Calling and Godly Life by Albert Martin to our listeners! //The Wire//2300Z December 11, 2024////PRIORITY////BLUF: CONCERNS GROW REGARDING NEW JERSEY AIRCRAFT SIGHTINGS. MAJOR CHINESE ACTIVITY REPORTED IN THE TAIWAN STRAIT. SYRIAN REBELS NOW CONTROL SIGNIFICANT STOCKPILES OF MANPADS.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Syria: Concerns are growing regarding the staggering amount of military arms that are now in the hands of HTS rebels throughout the country. Though Israel, Turkey, and the United States have bombed most military arms caches throughout the country, the al-Qaeda-linked “rebels” now control hundreds (if not thousands) of Man Portable Air Defense Systems (MANPADs), tens of thousands of rockets, the entire Syrian Air Force, and the like. Far East: Concerns are also mounting regarding China's recent activities in the Taiwan Strait. Currently, China has declared extremely large scale naval exercises throughout the region, which have drawn concerns that this may actually be the prelude to a military invasion of Taiwan. As of this morning over 90 surface vessels have taken part in maneuvers in the waters surrounding Taiwan, with hundreds of aircraft also participating in exercises to some degree.AC: So far, the Chinese doctrine of camouflaging drills with legitimate invasion plans is working, and thus it's too soon to tell if China will indeed invade Taiwan. Considering the events in the Middle East, and the outgoing American administration, it is possible that China means to strike while the iron is hot. However, as previously noted following the rapid-pace of deteriorating events around the world, it would also be in China's best interest to flex their power in the region, without actually committing to a full-blown war. Also, the typical list of indications that would lead up to invasion plans hasn't materialized in many ways that one might expect if China were planning to militarily invade Taiwan.-HomeFront-New Jersey: Speculation surrounding the recent drone sightings throughout the state has increased following more people becoming aware of the situation. So far, not much information has been made public regarding what is going on. However, due to the attention being placed on these events, various official statements have been made. Governor Phil Murphy has acknowledged the drones (and the dozens of sightings), but hasn't commented on the aircraft much, except to say that the drones are not a threat to public safety. Yesterday, locals reported that one of the aircraft crashed in Montville, though almost zero details have come to light to confirm this incident, and all reporting on this alleged crash is single-source at the moment and therefore could be a false report. Companies and military contractors have weighed in on the aircraft as well. Picatinny Arsenal, a major military contractor for R&D of various technologies has stated that the devices aren't related to their research, but they have confirmed sighting 11 drones themselves since November. This afternoon, various politicians have stated that the drones being observed in New Jersey are suspected to be of Iranian origin, and that they are being launched from a “mothership” that is operating off the coast. More specifically, most of the information being repeated by authorities indicates that no one knows who is operating the craft, or where they come from, but many have been observed arriving and departing from the coast. Additionally, the craft allegedly do not have any signals being transmitted to them, and the lighting onboard the aircraft turns off when the aircraft is approached.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: The unidentified “drone” situation in New Jersey has become more concerning as more sightings have occurred. However, these reports are probably related to more people actually being on the lookout now that the story has gone viral. As such, an increase in reports does not always equa

This week Lyle and I take you exploring the gorgeous Sunshine Coast hinterland area.  In particular we record live as we walk around Montville which is an amazing little village perched right on the edge of the escarpment of the Blackhall ranges 500 metres above sea level. We start in a secret park area full of ponds and lush vegetation.  Listen as we share just how stunning it is and you can hear all the birds singing in the background. Next, we take you with us along this quaint main street of Montville Village. Tourists flock to this main street and We share why, including all the unique shops, cafes, galleries, that make this village so popular.  Even the footpath gets a shout out.  I tell you about my favourite dress shop – and not just because of the clothes, but also the dressing room with no curtains. We half-jokingly call Montville the wedding capital of the world and you will understand why after his episode. Nothing in this little village is ordinary – in fact, most things are extraordinary – including the world-famous purpose-built wedding chapel.  It is like nothing you have ever seen before. I tell you about my favourite spot in the main street and why and we finally make it to the top of town (a little bit puffed) where we used to live and run a business.  We tell you all about our time here and the most beautiful beer garden we visited many times. Finally, we wander across the road to share the most spectacular view that is Instagram famous.  Imagine every shade of green, forests, farmlands, hills, all gently rolling down all the way to the white strip of sand that lines the sparking blue Pacific Ocean – just spectacular, and you can enjoy a coffee, meal or cold drink (I mean wine obviously) while taking in the view. Stay listening to the end when we tell you all about the incredible national parks that surround Montville and the most popular hikes that form part of Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk.  The Sunshine Coast hinterland is one of the most popular weekend getaway spots in the country and for good reason.  Please enjoy episode 88. The last few weeks I've enjoyed checking in with some of my guests from WAY BACK - like, 2020-2021 - to find out what they're up to now, and I've been reveling in all the growth and expansion (and sometimes pivoting!) that's occurred since our initial conversations. Today is no exception - I'm checking back in with Jackie Stratton, a registered Maine guide who featured prominently in the early days of the podcast. Jackie first shared her guiding origin story in January 2021, and she was one of the awesome panelists for our "Maine Guide Q&A"  in May of 2021.But fast forward 2+ years. While Jackie's interest in the outdoors hasn't waned, her business interests have completely refocused as a result of the overwhelming success of what started out as a side hustle, to keep some cash coming in during the off season.Cedar Grove Sauna is now actually THREE saunas: two anchored in beautiful spots on Jackie and her partner Nate's sprawling homestead property in Montville, Maine; and a third that's a modified horse trailer, that Jackie tows around mid-coast Maine and plants for days at a time in spectacular waterfront spots.Jackie and I talk about the explosion of her sauna business, how it's impacted her guiding, and why she spent six weeks in Europe this summer in various states of undress. As a preservationist, I have always believed that if you knew about the history of a place, it would make you care more about it. And if you uncovered the history, you'd feel inspired by the stories of the people who came before you. This episode reveals the importance of “citizen historians” - people who are dedicated to saving a historic place's story as well as preserving the site for future generations.   Masses of Eastern European Jews began immigrating to the United States in the 1880s. Between 1881 and 1924, more than two and a half million Jews arrived in America. Many settled in large cities such as New York. But some were aided in becoming farmers and land- owners by the philanthropy of the Baron de Hirsch, a wealthy German Jew who amassed a fortune in building railroads. Funded by de Hirsch, the American Jewish Agricultural Society helped Jews to buy farmland, provided money for synagogues, published a Yiddish farm magazine and had Jewish farm agents. In Connecticut, an early Jewish farm community was established in Chesterfield in the town of Montville northwest of New London. In this episode, we hear more about how this early Jewish community's history was saved by a group of descendants and how the site of the group's first synagogue and creamery was preserved as an archeological site.       Author and historian Mary Donohue interviews Nancy Savin, the 2022 winner of Preservation Connecticut's Harlan H. Griswold Award presented by Preservation Connecticut and the Connecticut State Historic Preservation Office. Harlan Griswold once said, “To me, preservation is more about my grandchildren than about my grandparents.” Her award citation reads “Through her selfless preservation efforts, both small and large, Nancy Savin is helping to build a better future for our children and grandchildren.”   A college graduate in voice and music history, Nancy spent 17 years at Connecticut Public as award-wining producer/host of arts and culture programming. But she is also the great-great granddaughter of Hirsch Kaplan, an Eastern European immigrant who arrived in New York City in 1887. So how did he end up in tiny Chesterfield as a Jewish farmer? And what was the New England Hebrew Farmers of the Emanuel Society?  We'll find in this episode.   Visit the website of the New England Hebrew Farmers of the Emanual Society here: https://www.newenglandhebrewfarmers.org/   Read more about the New England Hebrew Farmers in Nancy's article in Connecticut Explored's Winter 2022 issue here: https://www.ctexplored.org/the-new-england-hebrew-farmers-of-the-emanuel-society/   And Jewish farmers here- https://www.ctexplored.org/hebrew-tillers-of-the-soil/ https://www.ctexplored.org/the-connecticut-catskills/ https://www.ctexplored.org/the-new-england-hebrew-farmers-of-the-emanuel-society/   Listen to our Grating the Nutmeg podcast on Jewish farmers here: https://gratingthenutmeg.libsyn.com/94-connecticuts-jewish-farmers You can buy the book A Life of the Land: Connecticut's Jewish Farmers by Mary M. Children Increased Grade Point Average and Learned Social Skills I would like to share this article on Pat Gesualdo. I had the privilege of interviewing him for my podcast. Please listen to this informative discussion with Pat.   In the study done in SURREY, ENGLAND/MONTVILLE, N.J. (August 27, 2014) –Drumming can help children with autism spectrum disorders and O.D.D. to stop violent behavior, self-mutilation, and assist with developing cognitive functioning, social skill interaction, and grade point average, according to the research team at the Woodland Grange School in Surrey England, and the non-profit research organization Drums and Disabilities, (D.A.D.) in Montville, NJ. For people with autism and cognitive disabilities, the synapses in the brain ineffectively communicate with each other. Playing repeated patterns of music can re-train these synapses, and can help these people re-establish the correct synapse pathways. The study was conducted by David Ciauro (EdS, MA,LAC), Pat Gesualdo, Senior Research Director for D.A.D. Christopher Topple, and Colin Jenkinson, Head Teacher for the Woodland Grange School. Playing repeated patterns of music rhythms which the researchers called “Drum Therapy,” helped the study participants to re-train the synapses in the brain, and develop physical and cognitive functioning. “The study participants in our school have stopped violent behavior, self mutilation, and have achieved a 100% attendance record, as a result of the Drum Therapy research,” says Head Teacher Colin Jenkinson. “Their parents and I are in total disbelief of their success.” Click Here or Click the link below for more details! https://naturallyrecoveringautism.com/146

A convenient mini-meal, Daily Gut & Brain” is available now at the CVS Pharmacy in Wakefield. Now for some trivia. Did you know that Rhode Island native, Chester Nichols Jr. was a professional baseball player? He was a pitcher for nine seasons with the Boston and Milwaukee Braves, Boston Red Sox and Cincinnati Reds. In 1951, he was the National League earned run average champion as a 20-year-old rookie, and was the runner-up to Willie Mays for the league's Rookie of the Year Award. He was the son of former major league pitcher Chet Nichols Sr., a right-hander who appeared in 44 games for three National League clubs between 1926 and 1932. Now, for our feature story: Rural health care providers in Rhode Island are getting more than $650,000 in federal relief funds to help improve care and make up for losses incurred during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Senator Jack Reed: “The federal grants, administered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, can be used to pay salaries or recruit workers, purchase supplies or equipment, make capital investments, or cover other expenses related to preventing and responding to the pandemic.” The federal funding will make 88 payouts to local health care providers and suppliers who serve rural communities and deliver care to Medicaid, Medicare, and Children's Health Insurance Program beneficiaries. Reed said: “COVID-19 impacts us all and this federal funding will help ensure that health care practitioners who serve patients from rural areas can continue to reliably serve them and help combat this pandemic.” For more information on jobs and employment, check out this story and more at thewesterlysun.com Today we're remembering the life of Loretta Brown of Pawcatuck, beloved wife of Norman for 54 years. Loretta was born in Montville, Connecticut, and worked as a Certified Nurse's Aide for Mary Elizabeth Nursing Home for many years. In addition to her husband, she leaves her daughters, granddaughter, and two step-grandchildren. Thank you for taking a moment with us today to remember and celebrate Loretta's life. Legendary, award-winning sportswriter Leigh Montville—former Boston Globe columnist, Sports Illustrated senior writer, and New York Times bestselling author of biographies covering the lives of athletes like Ted Williams, Babe Ruth, Muhammad Ali, and Dale Earnhardt—has entertained sports fans and readers for five decades with his wry voice and razor-sharp insights. But even after his six critically acclaimed, bestselling biographies, Sports Illustrated cover stories, and decades of Globe columns, Montville has never written an autobiographical word. That changes with TALL MEN, SHORT SHORTS: The 1969 NBA Finals: Wilt, Russ, Lakers, Celtics, and A Very Young Sports Reporter (Doubleday). Already poised to be a new classic, TALL MEN, SHORT SHORTS weaves a fine thread of Montville's own coming-of-age as a celebrated journalist into an absolutely riveting sports story: the 1969 NBA Finals. Considered one of the best championship series in sports history—seven games, West Coast vs. East Coast, ending with a massive upset—it was a classic battle between the Los Angeles Lakers (the first iteration of the Dream Team so familiar to us today) and Boston Celtics (widely regarded as the underdogs, past their prime after an unbelievable 12-season, 10-championship run), with two of the most legendary stars of the game in Wilt Chamberlain vs. Bill Russell who, even today, rank alongside Michael Jordan and LeBron James as two of the greatest players of all time. But beyond the breathtaking sports writing, Montville also steeps us in the nostalgia of 1969—the good and the ugly—when most professional sports teams were racially integrated but not always smoothly (see: Bill Russell's comments about being a Black man in 1960s Boston) and sports fans didn't quite know how to feel about it, all against the backdrop of Vietnam and an America in political, cultural, and racial turmoil, through the eyes of a very young, very green New England sportswriter. With lively and colorful coverage of the classic series, an epic cast of characters, Montville's own charming narrative thread, and real contemporary resonance to our current political and racial tensions—exploding on and off the court, field, and pitch—TALL MEN, SHORT SHORTS will delight basketball fans old and new.

So when it came to the choice of choosing an organic coffee, I didn't find it too difficult. The coffee I found was fair trade, which really means a lot - you'll find that in this episode, it was organic, it was a Queensland company and it was also socially conscious. Oh did I mention the coffee is delicious too? So my choice was Montville Coffee and from day 1 I was hooked!
