Getting sober doesn't magically fix all of your problems, but it does make you much more capable of dealing with them. In a ten day period, Tim got the news that his daughters had been molested, his cousin had passed away, and his wife had cheated on him. The man from years past would have hopped in the truck, hit the liquor store and numbed the pain, and sadly left the problems to fester. Yet, in the face of this ugliness and adversity, Tim remained strong and sober, and dealt with this seemingly impossible flood of news and events. I was shocked when he shared this on the podcast, and even more so when he explained his incredible perspective and reaction in the face of such difficulty. I am beyond proud of my friend Tim. Tim Lodgen grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, where he signed a skateboard contract that had him riding with Bucky Lasek and Brandon Novak. Playing sports kept him away from drugs and alcohol until he enlisted in the Marine Corps as a Senior in High School. He thought he'd let off some steam before he had to enter the highly regimented life of a soldier, and during that time, he did every drug he could get his hands on. Soon he was deployed to Somalia, where massive amounts of alcohol took the place of the drugs. When he finally returned home, he was happy to be out of the military but quickly fell into a deep depression that had him sitting with a gun in his lap and thinking about suicide. He finally admitted his depression and was diagnosed with Bi-Polar disorder. Still, without ever admitting to his drug and alcohol use, he spent the next 20 years with incorrect doses that did little for his mental health. Tim then began a career as an MMA fighter. An eventual injury led him to introduce opiates into his use, which sent his addiction to another level and caused a second suicide attempt. He finally found help 27 years into his addiction after his wife discovered him preparing to take his own life. He has since become the healthiest version of himself, even coming in 3rd place in a Muscle and Fitness bodybuilding contest. Tim now uses his platform to help others by telling his story, working with the homeless, and offering addiction and health advice through his Instagram account. ______________________________________ Resources: // National Suicide Help Line Phone: 988 (new nationwide short-code) URL: www.988lifeline.org Links: // Tim Lodgen: Insta: @tlodgen // Patrick Custer: Insta: @patrick_custer // Rooted Recovery Stories Podcast: Insta: @rootedrecoverystories URL: www.rootedrecoverystories.com // Promises Behavioral Health - Help for addiction, mental health/trauma: Call: (888) 648-4098 URL: www.promisesbehavioralhealth.com Insta: @promises_bh . . . . . #timlodgen #podcast #rootedrecoverystories #addiction #addictionawareness #addictionrecovery #addictiontreatment #alcoholfree #anxiety #cleanandsober #depression #healing #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthmatters #mentalillness #odaat #onedayatatime #brandonnovak #promisesbehavioralhealth #recovery #recoveryispossible #recoverywarrior #patrickcuster #sober #soberaf #soberlife #soberliving #sobriety #wedorecover

This week on Dopey! We are joined by a very special and truly rugged individual, former marine, skateboarder, and MMA competitor - Tim Lodgen. Tim tells his incredible story! After over 27 years of alcoholism and multiple suicide attempts, Tim shares how his final suicide attempt jump started his recovery journey. It is an extra long Dopey story you won't believe! PLUS emails, sober fun, and more on the brand new episode of that good old Dopey show! More About Dopey: Dopey Podcast is the world's greatest podcast on drugs, addiction and dumb shit. Chris and I were two IV heroin addicts who loved to talk about all the coke we smoked, snorted and shot, all the pills we ate, smoked, all the weed we smoked and ate, all the booze we consumed and all the consequences we suffered. After making the show for 2 and a half years, Chris tragically relapsed and died from a fentanyl overdose. Dopey continued on, at first to mourn the horrible loss of Chris, but then to continue our mission - which was at its core, to keep addicts and alcoholics company. Whether to laugh at our time in rehab, or cry at the worst missteps we made, Dopey tells the truth about drugs, addiction and recovery. We continually mine the universe for stories rife with debauchery and highlight serious drug taking and alcoholism. We also examine different paths toward addiction recovery. We shine a light on harm reduction and medication assisted treatment. We talk with celebrities and nobodies and stockpile stories to be the greatest one stop shop podcast on all things drugs, addiction, recovery and comedy!

We meet the next guest, Tim Logan at the Marriott hotel downtown Baltimore. Tim is an impressive person when you meet him, you cant help but notice he's big, he's physical. He's sharp edged and he just has a presence about him. I knew it was him the moment I saw him in the frame of the hotel door. As we got to settle into the chairs and set up, it wasn't just Tim's physical presence. It was also his is energy and the intensity around him. Tim's story is a hard one to listen to, even though it's full of hope because it takes you to such a place of despair, such an emotional place, to listen and understand what another human goes through. There is a reminder of how dark the human spirit can become, and how it can happen to any of us. Tim's parents divorced when he was six and he said that really did impact him. He never really felt like he was good enough. That perhaps a divorce was his fault. Despite Tim's good nature and success in early life, that early self doubt, sent him on the troubling path. It's a powerful part of the interview where Tim describes the moments leading up to him trying to take his life, and how now he's 20 months sober, and finally learn to love himself at the age of 44. And after 20 years, he's met his father again, and it was a powerful healing moment. Tim has an amazing story and he tells it with the intensity that'll captivate you. Tim is a beautiful human who held onto the coping skills of his inner child a bit too long, finally releasing them, bringing light to a once dark space. For behind the scenes content of the making of The Jar, meet the guests, see some footage of unreleased podcast episodes and more visit : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCaTqB1dhDvl0Oh505ysdxTgTo be a guest on the show email us at thejarguest@gmail.com or visit our webpage : https://www.thejar.live/Follow The Jar on Instagram : https://www.instagram.com/thejar_podcast/Follow The Jar on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/podcast.thejarDisclaimer: The views stated in this episode are our guest's opinions and do not represent the views, beliefs or opinions of The Jar Podcast. In episode 151, Tim Lodgen's powerful story allows us to go deeper into a topic we've only lightly addressed: suicide. Suicide is difficult to discuss; it's a topic that carries deep emotions, difficult theology, and hefty stigmas. However, not discussing it leaves the many who wrestle with suicidal thoughts feeling more alone. The truth is, they aren't alone; these emotions and mindsets can be found in scripture. Tim and I don't give answers, but we do create space to discuss this hard topically honestly. Tim also shares transparently his challenging journey with addiction, and how God was with him even when he couldn't believe it. How has the God brought you peace amidst hopelessness? Tim Lodgen grew up in Baltimore Maryland where he signed a skateboard contract that had him riding with Bucky Lasek and Brandon Novak. Playing sports kept him away from drugs and alcohol until he enlisted in the Marine Corps as a Senior in High School. He thought he'd let off some steam before he had to enter the highly regimented life of a soldier and during that time he did every drug he could get his hands on.Soon he was then deployed to Somalia where massive amounts of alcohol took the place of the drugs. When he finally returned home he was happy to be out of the military but quickly fell into a deep depression that had him sitting with a gun in his lap and thinking about suicide. He finally admitted his depression and was diagnosed with Bi-Polar disorder, but without ever admitting to his drug and alcohol use, he spent the next 20 years with incorrect doses that did little for his mental health. Tim then began a career as an MMA fighter. An eventual injury led him to introduce opiates into his use that sent his addiction to another level and caused a second suicide attempt. He finally found help 27 years into his addiction after his wife discovered him preparing to take his own life. He has since become the healthiest version of himself, even coming in 3rd place in a Muscle and Fitness bodybuilding contest. Tim now uses his platform to help others through telling his story, working with the homeless and offering addiction and health advice through his Instagram account.Episode ResourcesRockstar Testimony Instagram | @Rockstar_testimonyConnect with TimInstagram | @tlodgenConnect with The Courage to ChangePodcast Website |lionrock.life/couragetochangepodcastPodcast Instagram |@couragetochange_podcastYouTube |The Courage to Change PodcastTikTok |@ashleyloebblassingamePodcast Email |podcast@lionrock.lifePodcast Facebook |@thecouragetochangepodcast
Another rather disconcerting dalliance with regard to addiction is its bedfellow of mental illness. A handful of criteria had been recorded as to be the sole cause of a mental disorder - brain injury, trauma sustained in a family setting, excessive bullying or worse yet . . . A curse of genetics. What is even more concerning is the after-effects that prolonged use of drugs and alcohol is a direct contributor to the development of such disorders NL. Anxiety, psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia, and even bipolar disorder. But . . . It's never a death sentence. Tim Lodgen, the warrior of this week is a sterling example. Tim has been through the wringer in this life, but after a particularly dramatic event, the man has made it his mission to not become another statistic, but rather a statement, shining light, and an axiom for those who are afflicted and cannot fathom reaching out. We'll discuss his journey from then until now, how fitness plays a pivotal role and Tim will bust some myths and fallacies about mental health afflictions that float about society today. Tim is also a featured speaker that will take to the stage of the inaugural Empower 2 Recover A conference that is due to premiere in British Columbia this coming November. He's coming to DIS Live . . . And we want to hear his story. You're invited to join us. Hope you enjoyed another inspiring episode! Growing up in Maryland, Tim Lodgen started skateboarding with the local up & coming pros like Brandon Novak & Bucky Lasek. He started drinking often in high school, and eventually, he went down the road of alcoholism & drug use. When Tim joined the marines, it really made the drinking worse. He's taking his medication for his bipolar disorder and is able to process & deal with his emotions in a healthy way. During his sobriety Tim has been able to make amends with his family, reconnecting with those that matter most. In this episode, I talk to ex US marine and MMA fighter Tim Lodgen about his 27 year battle with alcoholism and other substances. Tim tells us that he doesn't remember his 20s and his drinking got really bad whilst during the Marine core. He suspects that it got worse due to trauma from the marines as well as his father leaving when he was 7. Tim tells us that he was drinking shots before work, being verbally abusive to his family, crashed a car and didn't remember, and was facing jail time due to his anger. Tim hit rock bottom when his wife told him that he couldn't be there anymore and shortly after his wife found him in the process of taking his own life. Tim got sober when his good friend and Jackass star Brandon Novak called him when he was at his lowest point offering him the opportunity of a lifetime. Brandon got him a plane ticket and booked him into rehab. After going through the 12 step rehabilitation process Tim has now been sober for 10 months and radiates nothing but gratitude. He is on a mission to change the world for the better. Tim said “Giving up is not an option, getting up is the only option”, “I didn't realize I was in a cage and the one holding the key” This is an inspiring story of hope that proves that it is possible to get sober even after 27 years. Growing up in Maryland, Tim Lodgen started skateboarding with the local up & coming pros like Brandon Novak & Bucky Lasek. He started drinking often in high school, and eventually, it went down the road of alcoholism & drug use. When Tim joined the marines, it really made the drinking worse. Tim thought he had it under control, he would drink while holding down a job, and this justified it in his mind. He was trained in MMA, karate & other martial arts. He never made it pro, but he was a local accomplished athlete that still had the respect of his peers at this time. His drinking started to take over his life though, and Tim noticed a difference. His friend Brandon Novak went over to his house one night and tried to convince him to get help and get into rehab, but Tim wasn't ready. A couple of nights later, he went to the local liquor store after drinking, crashed into something, and made it home. His wife was upset and concerned, but let it slide. The next morning, he woke up & realized the whole side of his truck was smashed, and he had no memory of what happened. The next day he went out drinking again and smashed into another car, this time damaging the front of his truck. This was the last straw for his wife, who kicked him out of their house at this point. He was homeless, sleeping in his car drinking whiskey when Brandon Novak called him. They had arranged for him to get on a plane & into the Banyan Treatment Center, and this started his road to recovery. He's been staying sober with the help of his daughters and his wife, who want to help him as possible to stay on the path he's been on. After 9 months of sobriety, his oldest daughter is finally talking to him again. He takes everything one day at a time and hopes to share his story here in hopes of changing a life out there that may have been going down the same road as he was.
