Explore the Journey of Ryan Dusick: Founding Drummer of Maroon 5
What if you got everything you thought you always wanted… then lost it all? How would you move forward? Would you live in regret? Depression? Victim mentality? Or would you find that maybe, just maybe, it would spur you to find the TRUE key to happiness in learning to let go, pivot, and reprioritize your life? This is exactly what happened to Ryan Dusick, founding drummer from Maroon 5.Founding the group “Kara's Flowers” in 1994 (yup, that was the band's name at first!) with best friends Adam Levine, Jesse Carmichael, and Mickey Madden, Ryan and his bandmates worked tirelessly for a decade before the group changed its name to Maroon 5 and finally recorded its first multi-platinum album Songs About Jane. Multiple hit songs, two Grammy awards, and 20 million albums sold later, Ryan found himself suffering and without direction, when his career as a performer came to an end, just as it was taking off.After years of struggling with physical and mental health challenges, Ryan finally turned a corner in 2016, when he began his journey of recovery, culminating in a new life path full of meaning, purpose and fulfillment. Curious about what he's up to today? We sat with him on the heels of releasing his book, “Harder to Breathe: A Memoir of Making Maroon 5, Losing It All, and Finding Recovery” to hear more about his journey from aspiring pop star to global superstar to heartbroken alcoholic to thriving mental health survivor and messenger of hope, recovery, and a new take on GRATITUDE.************Show Notes:A big thank you to Ryan Dusick for joining the podcast and sharing your inspiring story.Learn more at https://www.ryandusick.com and follow Ryan on Instagram: @ryanmichaeldusick************Make sure to follow Jamie @jamiehess on Instagram for news & updates, and visit our companion Instagram account @gratitudeology for a sneak peek into the personal moments discussed on the show.************The Gratitudeology Podcast theme music is by HYLLS, performed by Nadia Ali @thenadiaali Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
In the first half, therapist and former drummer of the band Maroon 5, Ryan Dusick, joined guest host Lisa Garr (email) to share his tumultuous journey through music, mental health struggles, and eventual recovery. Reflecting on his early identity, he noted, "I was a high-achieving kid... it became an expectation that I had of myself." He described how this pressure manifested into anxiety in adulthood. Despite a promising start in the music industry, Dusick revealed the harsh realities of the business, recounting how Maroon 5 faced setbacks after their first album. He also discussed his substance abuse at that time, explaining how he was originally "straight edge in the 90s," but later turned to alcohol as a means to cope with the pressures of touring.Dusick went on to describe his struggles with imposter syndrome, which led to obsessive behaviors and a disconnect from the joy of performing. The intense pressure of fame and relentless touring exacerbated his mental health issues, culminating in a condition known as focal dystonia, likened to "the Yips" in sports, where his body began to reject playing the drums. Dusick's eventual breakdown led him to leave the band he had built his identity around, which he described as "devastating."After struggling with depression and substance abuse for nearly a decade, Dusick found purpose in helping others during his own recovery journey. Now a therapist and advocate for mental health, he has embraced a new path. "Service became advocacy... it feels good to feel like I have something to share," he said.According to Dusick, "The biggest indicator of whether or not people are happy is that they feel a sense of connection and purpose." He advocated for proactive mental health strategies, emphasizing mindfulness as a tool to manage anxiety: "Mindfulness is about getting out of your own way and living in acceptance of the present moment." He encouraged those struggling with anxiety to practice grounding techniques and to remember that "thoughts are not actually happening; they are just things we're imposing on the present moment."-------------------In the second half, healer Ofer Niv shared his profound journey from a corporate career to embracing shamanism after facing serious health challenges. Niv, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis after previously battling thyroid cancer, said his dire condition prompted him to explore alternative healing practices. "I just couldn't enjoy life," he confessed. This experience led him to a year-long program focused on energy and self-discovery, culminating in a transformative session with a shamanic healer. "I felt fevers go up and down my spine… something shifted so big that I said I needed to know more of this," he recalled, marking the beginning of his healing journey. Remarkably, after embracing shamanism, he reported being symptom-free for the last eight to nine years and has not needed medication since 2020.Niv delved into the concept of "dark forces" that can affect individuals, explaining that many people unknowingly harbor "things that are not you" within their energy fields. He described these as "soul fragments" or even entities—spirits that may be drawn to individuals due to shared emotions. "Most of the time, it's coming from other people that wish something on them," he noted. When expanding on such influences, Niv explained that individuals often are under some form of curse or negative energy. "If you suspect that you are more unlucky than usual… maybe there is something that is energetically blocking you," he advised. He also emphasized the power of light and divine energy in healing, stating, "Light is always the answer to dark, and love is the answer to fear."

(Part 1) of Darrin's chats with his friend, original drummer for Maroon 5, Ryan Dusick The post Ryan Dusick – Maroon 5 (Part 1) appeared first on idobi.
In this episode, Ryan Dusick provides an introspective look at creating the multi-platinum rock pop band, Maroon5, with bandmates Adam Levine, Jesse Carmichael and Mickey Madden, who were later joined by James Valentine. Releasing Songs About Jane in the same timeframe that Ryan and host Benj Gershman met on the road (Summer 2002), Benj recalls the undeniable power of this new music as the two bands initiated a new friendship during two separate tours (Jeep World Outside Festival and an O.A.R. headlining run). Dusick soon had to bow out of his role as drummer for the globally successful band, due to a challenging injury, which later led to alcoholism and fallout in his private life. Ryan shares stories from his memoir, Harder to Breathe, and discusses his favorite memories of being in the band. Now recovered, Ryan spends his time being of service to others as a mental health therapist in Los Angeles California, and shares some key insights to how he incorporates compassion and curiosity into his daily life.
[NOTE: This episode has been a fan favorite & we decided to rerelease it for newer listeners of the show! As we dive more into mental health topics in the coming months, this felt like the perfect time!]Ever hear of a little band called Maroon 5? Today you're going to hear from their founding drummer Ryan Dusick & this conversation just might change your life!We talk about the band's rise to fame, what life is like touring in a world renown band and some of the surprises he encountered along the way. We take a detour down entrepreneurship lane and talk specifically about the processing of finding your voice (literally in the band's case) and how the path to success is almost longer than we anticipate. We then dig into his ultimate exit from the band, and his struggles with anxiety & panic that ultimately led him down a dark path of addiction & alcoholism.Ryan completely destroys any pre-conceived notions about a "rock star persona" you might think someone with his background would have. On the contrary, he's one of the most real & empathetic people I've had the pleasure of interviewing on the show. I promise you won't be able to put down his new book Harder to Breathe and you'll come away inspired. We wrap the episode on a positive note, working through Ryan's recovery process and hearing about how he serves people today as a certified therapist & coach. He's also a great speaker and I'm hoping he'll be launching a podcast or YouTube channel soon!Oh, and Ryan shares some fun stories, like the time John Mayer did an impromptu comedy routine before the band opened for his concert. BIO: Ryan Dusick is an associate marriage and family therapist, life coach, mental health advocate, and the founding drummer of the world's most popular band, Maroon 5.STORY: Ryan's worst investment ever was spending a decade of his time, energy, and focus believing that he had control over his life. Simply playing God with the reality of his existence.LEARNING: Happiness comes from connection and purpose. Investing yourself in something meaningful to you establishes purpose. “If you want to achieve certain things in your life, you must put yourself out there and be prepared for setbacks, disappointments, and failures.”Ryan Dusick Guest profileRyan Dusick is an associate marriage and family therapist, life coach, mental health advocate, and the founding drummer of the world's most popular band, Maroon 5.He is also a columnist for Variety Magazine and the author of the new book “Harder to Breathe: A Memoir of Making Maroon 5, Losing It All, and Finding Recovery.”His life has been a long and winding road from an aspiring pop star with anxiety to a heartbroken alcoholic to a thriving mental health survivor and messenger of hope in recovery.Worst investment everThe worst investment Ryan ever made was investing a decade of his time, energy, and focus into an illusion. The illusion was that he had control over his life, simply playing God with the reality of his existence. There were moments in that decade that were pleasant, enjoyable, and fun for Ryan.Maintaining the lie that Ryan had control of his life and that he could escape the feelings that were so painful was an exercise in futility. Life just got worse over time. His coping skills deteriorated. Ryan had invested in a way of life that was harming him and not benefiting him in any way other than maybe a moment of pleasure from time to time.Lessons learnedHappiness comes from feeling connection and purpose.Meaning and purpose are not necessarily handed to you by God or the universe. You can create them for yourself.Use your mindset to find ways to grow and find new connections and a new purpose.Investing yourself in something meaningful to you establishes purpose.Actionable adviceIf you want to achieve certain things in your life, to a certain extent, you have to put yourself out there and be prepared that there may be setbacks, disappointments, and failures. That's part of the process, ultimately, of getting to where you want to be. Those setbacks, disappointments, and failures don't make you a failure or mean it's the end of the road. It's part of the process of pursuing something valuable to you.No.1 goal for the next 12 monthsRyan's number one goal for the next 12 months is to be more of a professional speaker, step it up to the next level, and share some of the things he's learned on a bigger scale. Ryan lost everything, found himself in the depths of addiction before finding recovery in 2016 and completely reinventing himself and we dive into all of this today. Today on the show we discuss: The story of starting Maroon 5 and what led to Ryan being kicked out of the band, what life was like after losing everything, the challenges of success and fame, what his current relationship is like with Adam Levine, how Ryan reinvented himself and got sober, why he values recovery more than winning a grammy and more. Ryan Dusick is a founding member and original drummer of Maroon 5, but wound up being kicked out of the band just before their second album release. Ever hear of a little band called Maroon 5? Today you're going to hear from their founding drummer Ryan Dusick & this conversation just might change your life! We talk about the band's rise to fame, what life is like touring in a world renown band and some of the surprises he encountered along the way. Ryan Dusick is an Associate Marriage & Family Therapist with an MA in Clinical Psychology and the founding drummer of the world's most popular band, Maroon 5. As a boy, he dreamt of pitching for the Dodgers and writing adventure novels. Arm injuries sidelined his burgeoning baseball career, just as rock music became his new passion and purpose. Founding the band Kara's Flowers in 1994 with fellow Brentwood High School students Jesse Carmichael, Mickey Madden, and Adam Levine, Ryan worked tirelessly through his college years at UCLA before the band changed its name to Maroon 5 and finally had its first hit record, Songs About Jane. Multiple hit songs, two Grammy Awards, and 20 million albums sold later, Ryan found himself suffering and without direction as his career as a performer came to an end, just as it was taking off. Struggling with physical and mental health challenges, Ryan finally overcame his struggles in 2016, when he began his journey of recovery, culminating in a new life path full of meaning, purpose, and fulfillment. Now working as a mental health professional at The Missing Peace Center for Anxiety in Agoura Hills, CA, Ryan is spreading the message that recovery is possible, and some astounding things can come with it.

What if you were the drummer for Maroon 5, and soon after you became one of the best-known bands in the world, you realized that there was something very wrong, something that impaired your ability to play? Founding member of Maroon 5, author and associate marriage and family therapist, Ryan Dusick, found himself keeping his condition a secret from Adam Levine and the rest of his bandmates. Hoping that he'd never have to reveal to the others what was really going on. But what would you do if one day your bandmates confronted you and asked you to take a step back? Would you insist on continuing anyway, unwilling to let go of the band you'd help build? Or would you take a step back, way back, and change the course of your life forever? Like many people in my generation, I was rock music-obsessed when I was growing up. My wall was covered in posters of Zeppelin, Rush, Van Halen, The Smiths, Depeche Mode, and others. And I constantly fantasized about becoming a rockstar. Obviously, that was not my path. Yet, I still wonder, what would it actually be like to become a rockstar? And, regarding this episode, what would it be like to become a rock star in a mega-band and lose that status? Harder still, what would it be like to watch your rockstar bandmates enjoy international fame to levels seen by very few bands create platinum records, play halftime at the Super Bowl, and win a bunch of Grammys? I had the pleasure of sitting down with Maroon 5 founding drummer, Ryan Dusick (https://www.ryandusick.com/), who shared what that was like. Ryan was there from the early days long before Maroon 5 was even a thing, back when they were known as Kara's Flowers. He grew up with Adam Levine and other band mates. Together, they created what I consider one of the greatest albums of all time, Songs About Jane. Ryan was part of the band's enormous success. and, as you will hear, anxiety, perfectionism, and other phenomena sidelined him, eventually taking him out of his coveted position as drummer. You will hear what it was like to deal with the loss, the FOMO, the social comparison, struggles with addiction, and a kind of heartache few can imagine. But it doesn't end there. In this interview, you'll hear how he found and continues to find meaning afterwards. Today, Ryan is an Associate Marriage and Family Counselor, and I am confident he is and will continue to become a superb therapist. He wrote a phenomenal memoir I loved so much that I listened to it twice called Harder to Breathe: A Memoir of Making Maroon 5, Losing It All, and Finding Recovery. So, listen in as Ryan and I get into life before, during, and after Maroon 5. Book link: https://tinyurl.com/y464mudu

In the nineties, Ryan Dusick and his friends Adam Levine and Jesse Carmichael dreamed about making it big... and against all odds, they did. For Dusick, stardom came to an abrupt halt with the devastating loss of his ability to play drums due to chronic nerve damage. Ryan lost a decade to liquor and anti-anxiety medication, and has now made a ferocious commitment to recovery, and his current perspective as a professional counselor. Ryan Dusick is the founding drummer of Maroon 5, an Associate Marriage & Family Therapist (AMFT), and the author of the book "Harder to Breathe - A Memoir of Making Maroon 5, Losing It All, and Finding Recovery." In 1994, Ryan Dusick joined friends Adam Levine, Jesse Carmichael, and Mickey Madden to form the band Kara's Flowers. They released the album The Fourth World in '97. Following the termination of their record deal, the band went on hiatus and everyone went their separate ways. In 2001, Dusick reunited with Levine, Madden and Carmichael. They were joined by former Square guitarist James Valentine. The group changed their name to Maroon 5 and set to work writing new songs for what would become the award winning album Songs About Jane. We wrap up what has been a stellar Season 3 with the founding drummer of one of the world's most renowned bands: Ryan Dusick of Maroon 5. In the 1990s, when Dusick and his buddies including some guy named Adam Levine, dreamt of making it big in music---they never imagined Maroon 5 would emerge as one of the biggest bands on the planet. But it happened, and along with that fame came expectations, an unimaginable grind, pain, anxiety and the sex, drugs and rock'n'roll that envelopes nearly any music story. Dusick ran into problems with anxiety, alcoholism and more and ultimately left the band. Today, the lives an altogether different life as a marriage and family therapist---far from the glamorous lifestyle of playing percussion for a band that tours across the world to millions upon millions of fans. During our conversation, Dusick candidly outlines his long and winding journey and talks about his new memoir “Harder to Breathe," with a foward written by Levine. Ryan Dusick is best known as the founding drummer of the band Maroon 5. As a boy, he dreamt of pitching for the Dodgers and writing adventure novels. Arm injuries sidelined his baseball career, just as rock music became his new passion and purpose. In 1994 he founded the band Kara's Flowers with fellow Brentwood High School students Jesse Carmichael, Mickey Madden, and Adam Levine. Ryan spent the next 7 years honing his craft and in 2001 the band found success after changing its name to Maroon 5 and releasing their first album, Songs About Jane. Multiple hit songs, two Grammy Awards, and 20 million albums sold later, Ryan found himself suffering with mental health issues that affected his ability to play. He worked tirelessly to overcome the physical and mental hurdles that kept him from doing the thing he loved, but eventually was forced to leave the band. His career as a performer came to an end, just as it was taking off.Ryan's depression and grief around the loss of his identity brought about years of alcoholism and mental health struggles. He finally found sobriety in 2016, and began a new life path full of meaning, purpose, and fulfillment. Today Ryan works as a mental health professional at The Missing Peace Center for Anxiety in Agoura Hills, CA, and is spreading the message that recovery is possible.Ryan's debut memoir, Harder to Breathe, was published on November 15th, 2022 which tells his incredible story.Episode ResourcesHarder to Breathe | Harder to BreatheConnect with RyanInstagram | @ryan_michael_dusickConnect with The Courage to ChangePodcast Website | lionrock.life/couragetochangepodcastPodcast Instagram | @couragetochange_podcastYouTube | The Courage to Change PodcastTikTok | @ashleyloebblassingamePodcast Email | podcast@lionrock.lifePodcast Facebook | @thecouragetochangepodcastLionrock ResourcesLionrock Life Mobile App | lionrock.life/mobile-appSupport Group Meeting Schedule | lionrock.life/meetings
A fresh new episode of And Introducing! On it, we talk to Ryan Dusick, Maroon 5's founding drummer, about his new book Harder To Breathe: A Memoir of Making Maroon 5, Losing It All, and Finding Recovery. Ryan's story is extremely wild: an impossibly long pre-stardom grind as part of Maroon 5 leading up to their smash (sort of) debut album Songs About Jane, overwhelming "overnight" success, and a stunning reversal where a physical breakdown hindered his ability to play drums to the point of his dismissal from the band. We get into all of that, plus pop stardom's inherent body-and-brain-rattling stress, the 1990s Los Angeles music scene, being a musical athlete slash athletic musician, and much more...so have a listen! We missed you!! Songs played: Maroon 5 - "Harder To Breathe" (8-Bit Arcade Version) Kara's Flowers - "Soap Disco" Maroon 5 - "Harder to Breathe" Maroon 5 feat. Megan Thee Stallion - "Beautiful Mistakes"

In this episode we chat to the fabulous Ryan Dusick, one of the founding members of Maroon 5. Ryan talks to us about how the band went from being friends playing in a garage to Grammy Award winners who headlined stadiums across the world - and how alcohol insidiously crept up on him when injury meant that he couldn't perform. He talks to us about how he didn't talk about his issues with alcohol, and instead tried to laugh it off, or hide it - until it got to a point that he had to face his addiction head on after leaving the band in 2006 and struggling with alcohol for the next decade. Ryan is now a trained therapist and has just released his first book. It's called Harder To Breathe and it tells the story of the band's incredible rise - and his devastating fall - before finding recovery. We'd like to thank Ryan for his time, and for being so honest about his history with alcohol. His story shows that alcohol doesn't discriminate - it doesn't matter if you have it all, or nothing at all - it can creep up on anyone and take its hold. --- Get In Touch: Of course, you can always get in touch with us (publicly or privately) on our socials - @alcoholfreepod on Instagram, or search for "Over The Influence" on Facebook. Join Crystal as she interviews Ryan Dusick the founding drummer of Maroon 5. Crystal and Ryan both grew up in the Los Angeles area. Although Ryan was becoming a famous drummer and Crystal was becoming a mother BOTH stories involve an addiction to Alcohol. They both are on a recovery journey and believe that recovering out loud can spread the awareness that Sobriety IS Possible. About Ryan's new book: Two decades after Songs About Jane, Maroon 5's original drummer presents an unflinching examination of fame, anxiety, mental health, and recovery.In the nineties, Ryan Dusick and his friends Adam Levine and Jesse Carmichael dreamed about making it big . . . and against all odds, they did. This inside story recounts Maroon 5's founding and their road to becoming Grammy-winning megastars, told through the eyes of former drummer Ryan Dusick. He takes readers behind the scenes of the band's meteoric rise to success—and the grueling demands that came with it—as well as his personal struggles with anxiety and addiction after his departure from the band.For Maroon 5, fame came with a platinum debut record, jam sessions with Prince in his own living room, and encounters with celebrities such as Jessica Simpson, Justin Timberlake, John Mayer, and Bono. For Dusick, stardom came to an abrupt halt with the devastating loss of his ability to play drums due to chronic nerve damage. Alongside Maroon 5's story of camaraderie and pressure, Dusick interweaves his own narrative: a decade lost to liquor and anti-anxiety medication, his ferocious commitment to recovery, and his current perspective as a professional counselor. With a candor that will speak to anyone who has struggled with mental health, Harder to Breathe moves beyond celebrity to examine the nature of human heartbreak and resilience, and to buoy anyone currently facing similar challenges.Ultimately, Harder to Breathe is a roller-coaster memoir about how making it to the top sent Dusick to the bottom—and how he let go of the past and embraced a new future, one breath at a time.Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/8BQv8cINC6MAre you enjoying the Sober Onions Podcast?If so, your Donation or Sponsorship will help continue on the message of sobriety.All funds go to Podcast website, editing fees, hosting fees and media expenses.https://soberonions.com/sponsors-patrons/Your donation can change the lives of those struggling with addiction or those trying to maintain Sobriety.We are a community that grows by sharing and supporting each other.Thank you for your Support~ CrystalFOLLOW on IG: sober.onionsFacebook: Sober OnionsListen on Spotify & Apple ITuneshttps://soberonions.com/https://www.buymeacoffee.com/SoberonionsMaking the Change Sobriety Journal & Activity Book (Discount Code STAYSOBER)https://makingthechange.store/Support the Podcast https://account.venmo.com/u/soberonionsAll Episodes on website: www.soberonions.comInstagram @sober.onionsSobriety Journal www.makingthechange.store Digging the Podcast? Kison Patel, my guest for this episode, is applying principles of science and technology to the M&A (mergers & acquisitions) space. He is the Founder and CEO of M&A Science, a community of forward-thinking M&A practitioners on a mission to perfect the M&A practice. Kison was also an M&A advisor for ten years, having sold large companies such as commercial banks and hotel chains. In 2012, Kison noticed teams lacked efficient technology to manage deals and thus created DealRoom, an M&A lifecycle management platform. In 2016, he started the M&A Science podcast and devoting his time to creating a platform where all the best practitioners could share best practices and lessons learned from real-life deals. Kison then created The M&A Science Academy in 2020 to offer step-by-step training to those looking to master M&A, featuring courses created by top-level practitioners. Through developing technology, educational content, and industry training, Kison aims to bring better practices to an industry with growing market pressures, transaction values, and competition. I confessed in our conversation that my exposure to M&A is limited, but I have observed that it was a business space that is/was very behind the times. We talk a good deal about this and: The impact starting a podcast has had on his business Creating educational content and products in the M&A space How the competitive landscape is responding to the work of his companies and more Learn more about Kison Patel at MAScience.com. https://www.mascience.com/ Please enjoy this conversation with Kison Patel. My guest this week is Ryan Dusick, who was Maroon 5's original drummer until he retired because of chronic nerve damage. After departing the band, Ryan struggled with anxiety and addiction for a decade before making a commitment to recovery. Founding the group Kara's Flowers in 1994 with fellow Brentwood High School students Adam Levine, Jesse Carmichael, and Mickey Madden, Ryan and his bandmates worked tirelessly for a decade before the group changed its name to Maroon 5 and finally had its first hit album Songs About Jane. Multiple hit songs, two Grammy Awards, and 20 million albums sold later, Ryan found himself suffering and without direction when his career as a performer came to an end just as it was taking off. After years of struggling with physical and mental health challenges, Ryan finally overcame in 2016, when he began his journey of recovery, culminating in a new life path. Ryan now works as a mental health professional at the Missing Peace Center for Anxiety where he now helps others with their personal struggles, and has released a new book outlining his amazing life story. During the interview we spoke about the early days of Maroon 5, dealing with anxiety and a chronic injury, advice from U2, and much more. I spoke with RYAN via zoom from his personal studio in Los Angeles, CA. On the intro I'll take a look at the parts of a song that are protectable, and the 9 constants of vocal recording. var podscribeEmbedVars = { epId: 83777338, backgroundColor: 'white', font: undefined, fontColor: undefined, speakerFontColor: undefined, height: '600px', showEditButton: false, showSpeakers: true, showTimestamps: true };
