Cora knows a lot more about Einstein and Freud than me, and gives some important historical context, as well as the always-appreciated European's perspective on America. We discuss "The Tobacconist", Nilsson, Die Geschwister Pfister, Baseball, and the Conquest of Guam. As one does. Then Oklahoma's very reasonable Secretary of Education enters the discussion, and Dan has to add some sound effects. Cora is a brilliant guest, and I was glad to have her on. This is a good one, folks.

The Remnant with Jonah Goldberg

If you thought Jonah turned into an excited fanboy when he interviewed Mike Duncan, just wait until you hear today's Remnant, in which acclaimed psychologist Dr. Paul Bloom joins the program for the first time to discuss man's search for meaning. Human beings are strange creatures: We often deliberately seek out things that cause us pain or discomfort, like horror movies and spicy foods. Full Transcript: Day 89 Fag End Friday and we are off to the Administrator to sell our old car to Carmen, what could possibly go wrong, find out later in this episode.   If you want to catch up on previous episodes and full transcripts, go to the secret Spain dot com   Today I have been thinking about Satan’s smoke. A great many people in Spain seem to smoke, I remember we had to pick up a parcel from a UPS pick up point that turned out to be a rather sad looking Travel Agents, I guess even sadder now we are in the Covid19 world.   It was a pain to get to, Chris had to negotiate the one-way system of Motril and park the car in a tiny space in an equally tiny square.  We got out the car and looked around, finally seeing the little shop and a sad and very tiny sticker saying UPS pick up.   We went inside, a very disinterested lady was sat, chuffing on a ciggy above her was a large sign “No Fumar” to her right were some rusty carousels with actual travel brochures - Viaje inglés with your usual pictures of a pleased with himself beefeater, Stone Henge and William Shakespeare.   Behind her a shabby shelf filled with a disorganised pile of parcels, one of which would be ours.   I said in Spanish ‘I have to collect my parcel’. I placed the UPS note on the counter.  She took one last drag of her cigarette, blew the smoke out in both our directions and stubbed it out on the counter.   She picked the delivery note up with a great deal of disinterest. Turned to the bulging shelves let out a “mmmm” then “Dinee” The DNI is the Spanish Identity card, I don’t have that I have a Knee an NIE card, I gave her that, she replied “No good, ..passporte!”   Well I don’t actually carry my British passport around, it stays in the safe, so I said “No passporte” she replied “No paquette”   Then I had an idea, I wonder if she would accept my, then, British Driving Licence.  I got that out and pointed to the EU flag thing on the pink plastic card.   Another “mmm” she turned around and started to poke at the parcels on the back shelf, one fell off with a slight tinkly smash sound, eventually she found our parcel.   “Sin, sin aqui”   I signed my name and she pushed the parcel across the counter.  “Gracias,” I cheerily said, she gave us a withering look and reached over for her cigarette packet and drew out another smoke, lighting it with one of the Chinese shop lighters that threw an enormous flame up, momentarily lighting up the dingy shop for a moment.  We left.   As Chris tried to reverse out of the impossibly small square, she came to the door to watch us suffer, scowling and flicking cigarette ash up in the air in a theatrical way.   So, smoking in Spain, wherever you are seems to be a thing, I can almost imagine a Hospital Operating Theatre with a surgeon he is in the depths of some complicated surgery, the patient laying on the table.  He stops, pulls out a cigarette packet and lights up, then carrying on with the operation fag ash falling gently into the patients open body.   It was Rodrigo de Jerez who in 1492 first saw ‘natives’ smoking and brought the dried leaves back to Spain.   This did not go down well with the Church, The Spanish Inquisition stated that ‘only Satan can give to a man the ability to expel smoke through his mouth.’   So they locked up poor old Rodrigo for ten years, he was released after seven and the habit got picked up in Seville, but still the Church was having none of it.   In 1624 the Inquisition posted a tile that said you blow smoke out of any of your orifices and we will severely punish you, and that stayed the Church’s outlook until the 18th century.   By then the state had started to take an interest and saw an opportunity for tax and of course control.   The first tobacco factory in the world was in Seville which started production in 1758 they made snuff and cigars, but the quality was a bit shite,  mainly due to the men working in the factory not turning up to work and when they were at work having a half arse attitude to the manufacture of the cigars. The solution was to hire female workers to do the job, by 1829 all cigar making was done by women, there were more than six thousand women working in the factory by 1868 with their good wages made them ladies independent economically and a really important part of the economy of Seville.   Thursday and our trip to the Administrator his hit a little bump in the road, the DGT, the Government office she must visit has shut down the internet appointment system as “too many people are using it,” so she will have to doorstep the office in Granada to get the paperwork done.. sigh!   It is enough to make you want to take up smoking! All over Spain you see Estancos, little Tobacconist shops are where you buy you ciggies from, stamps and since 2014 a few other bits and bobs like crisps and the like.  Estancos are  Government controlled and have been for over 400 years ago they were traditionally awarded to War Widows, if you want to sell cigarettes you have to buy them from the Estanco, it is no good looking in the supermarket, along with paracetamol, cigarettes are also not sold there.   The weekend comes, it has already arrived for you, and as usual the wind will accompany our Saturday howling and whistling along the coast of Spain.

ISIS and Al Qaeda agree on at least one thing: coronavirus was sent by Allah to destroy the West! But, they’re still encouraging lone wolves… and it seems to be working! Abdallah Ahmed Osman is one of the lone wolves who heeded their call. A 33-year-old Sudanese refugee, he knifed at least 9 people in a bucolic town in the South of France-after shouting “Allahu Akbar” (Arabic for God is the Greatest). Ironically, though the town was on lockdown, essential stores were allowed to be open and that’s where he attacked: at the butcher, the baker and--since there was no candlestick-maker, at the tobacconist. Police found him on his knees praying, and he shouted at them to kill him. What motivated him? Simply jihadist propaganda? Did he want to be a martyr? Had fear of coronavirus driven him insane? Hear the rest of the story, and you decide. One thing is for certain, France has suffered numerous attacks by jihadists, and yet 300 convicted terrorists are due to be released from French prison by 2023.

On October 21, 2019, I had visited my parents Lionel and Karelia Melendi at their home in Vermont. When I arrived at their house, we started to have a conversation about the past. As the day grew into night, the conversations lead us down memory lane — these stories centered around the premium cigar industry. You see, my father was very influential in the New York City tobacconist movement starting back in the early 1960s and progressing into the mid-2000s. My father was not the only Melendi to influence the premium cigar business. My grandfather, Jose Melendi, was very influential when it came to Cameroon wrapper and opening the first government-backed cigar factory in Esteli Nicaragua. It became apparent after some time that I needed to interview my father and get the stories out and into the public. I needed to do this before these conversations were lost to history, and that was not acceptable. So I'm proud to present to you the interview that took 51 years to make. I am honored and humbled to have been a part of this special day in Vermont in mid-October of 2019.Without any further ado, I present to you: Fireside Chat with my father,  Lionel Melendi, and The Cigar Purveyor, aka Ron Melendi.

Episode #20 Fun Things To Do in Victoria, British Columbia   Welcome to the Travel Gluten Free Podcast, where you, my friend, listen in on how to lead a gluten-free lifestyle with more fun and ease! Why Victoria?   Do you love small towns that are walkable and easy to get around with a charming Main Street with more stories and tales than you can listen to in a week? Do you love boating, being near the water and harbors? How about museums which celebrate native culture, a town with inspiring stories from amazing people and the best "running of the goats"? All of this and more can be found in Victoria, British Columbia.   How to Get to Victoria   Have you been to SEA-TAC - the Seattle airport? Let me be the first to tell you its a zoo. Planning to fly into SEA TAC give yourself a good 2 hours between getting off the plane, renting your car and getting anywhere in Seattle. If you are within driving distance, I would suggest doing the drive. Beautiful scenery, great places to stop along the way - I've got to tell you I took the most stunning rest stop photos on this trip during a rainstorm - and then take your car on the ferry across from the US to Victoria. Ferry rides are so relaxing and fun. Families putting together puzzles, people playing games or just sitting back with food from the concession on the ferry or the lunch they've brought, and enjoying the scenery. My favorite activity to do on the ferry - sleep! I'm like a baby in a car when it comes to ferries.   And if you've never ridden a ferry, check out my Instagram pictures and here's a tip - make sure that as soon as you park and you are able to move, grab a seat by the window! This is prime real estate on a ferry and if you don't move fast, you will be resolved to sit in a seat away from a window without a table. While still a good view (and you can always go out on the deck during the ride, which is a real treat and gives you amazing photo ops) its definitely harder to sleep in a single seat than in a booth next to a window.   Victoria, the town with a history of history Have you seen the movie Inception - the movie with Leonardo Di Caprio plays Dom Cobb is a skilled thief, the absolute best in the dangerous art of extraction, stealing valuable secrets from deep within the subconscious during the dream state when the mind is at its most vulnerable.  One last job could give him his life back but only if he can accomplish the impossible-inception. Instead of the perfect heist, Cobb and his team of specialists have to pull off the reverse: their task is not to steal an idea but to plant one. If they succeed, it could be a perfect crime. But no amount of careful planning or expertise can prepare the team for the dangerous enemy that seems to predict their every move. An enemy that only Cobb could have seen coming.   This is Victoria, except take out stealing out secrets and insert history. Starting over 4000 years ago with the nations of the First People, Canadians Native Americans, the Royal BC Museum contains an exquisite language exhibit featuring native speakers welcoming you to the museum in over 2 dozen languages! Being an anthropology major and having a keen interest in Native American culture, this exhibit alone held my attention for a good 2 hours. Walking in, there are posts with the native language scribed on the pole, then you push the button to learn how to say welcome in their language. Just in British Columbia's native peoples alone, you can say welcome so many different ways, from Hello and Good Morning to How are you and your family? The language symbols used by native peoples of Canada are extraordinary - I've not seen these in other cultures. Most of these languages have only been spoken - writing them down is a recent phenomenon. Although many First Peoples do not speak their native language, the First Peoples' Cultural Council now provides community-based immersion programs for the next generation to learn to speak their native language - which was, for many years, illegal to speak. In addition to language, the cultural council also supports aboriginal artists. Look for the link to this great organization in the show notes below!   As you continue to walk through the Royal BC Museum, the local history unfolds of the white settlers taking over the region, the industrial era and the types of issues the white settlers brought onto the natives of the area. To this day, only one Native tribe in British Columbia has the right to own the right to their land. Walk through totems of more recent eras, with the large, bold carved faces and bodies of the local natives standing tall and prominent on the main floor. The Natural History Gallery gives you a feel for walking back into pre-history with a selfie-spot in front of the megafauna wooly mammoth, hallways of local and current flora and fauna and the diverse deltas and forests which are a part of BC's coast and interior.   The Royal BC Museum is a must-see on your stop to Victoria!   Walking Tour anyone?   Speaking of history, the walking tour is amazing! So many different little cultural hubs in Victoria including a China Town, where of course, you can purchase bubble tea! Fan Tan Alley, part of China Town, with Canton Cafe, calling the bubble tea lover with their picture sign, a woman happily walks out of the restaurant with her cup full of bubble tea, being sipped down until it eventually is transformed into the look of bliss on her face. The China Town Arch, which by the old tradition, should only be walked around and not directly under, because it is bad luck (or so our tour guide tells us ). Walking along the Main Street of Fan Tan, there's a vendor selling fresh produce, including fresh lychee fruit - a real delight when sweetened well. I find out that the Chinese immigrants who first came to this town were not treated well and were not allowed in the public school system, so the immigrants created their own Chinese school. Towards the middle of china town, Victoria decided to build an office complex in the 1960's AKA bomb shelter - which is a stark cultural black hole in the middle of rows of beautiful antique buildings with Chinese art influences.   There's also Bastion Square where you can find buildings made with beams from the Union Iron Works in San Francisco California circa 1861, modern art in the square and many historical buildings which now house offices, stores and apartments - each of them with their own unique story to tell.   Market Square in Victoria holds true to its name with a local outdoor market, an alleyway with history and unique feel when you walk between the red brick buildings, where you can almost hear the history if you can imagine the stories the brick and painted doorways tell when you walk by them. Their secrets are hidden under many layers of paint and story.   Downtown Victoria Trounce Alley - one of the main alleyways of downtown Victoria, is an interesting mix of modern and antique architecture, however, unlike the central bomb shelter of office buildings built in the '60s, these are tastefully created to blend in with the historical facades surrounding Victoria. Many upscale, gluten-free and fun eateries and shops abound in the downtown area. The Tobacconist, an original shop from the mid 1800s that has only known purveying of tobacco products since its inception, lies in the middle of Main Street in Downtown with a half-dome of hand-blown glass and metal welcoming you to the entrance to the store. There's Munro Books, where I picked up the Gluten is My by April Pevetaux, conversed with some locals, then moved on to Roger's Chocolates, established in 1885 and teeming with gluten-free truffles (of which I ate a FEW) chocolates and other delectable delights. Speaking of delightful, you must check out Chocolats Favoris, where the celiac-friendly ice cream shop will take your ice cream and dip it in one of three dips of your choice in the back separate from the gluten-infested dips in the front of the store! I must say this is NOT the choice of those who are faint-hearted when it comes to eating chocolate! My cup was SO full of delicious dark chocolate ice cream shell I wasn't able to finish the delectable fountain of goodness lying there, begging me to eat it - even when I saved the remainder in the hotel fridge overnight.     Jump out of Downtown into nature!   A short and beautiful drive from downtown, visit the Butchart Gardens. Started in the late 1800s by the wife of a prominent mining company, when the home they built was adjacent to the land they mined. Being that the land wasn't, let's say, easy on the eyes, the Jennie Buchart decided enough was enough and pulled workers from the mines to start to move dirt, plant and cultivate the area. The result is a magnificent garden, with over 100 years in bloom which include waterfalls, themed areas including a Japanese garden with a small creek meandering through the many plant residents and a rose garden. During holidays, the gardens put on holiday displays in different areas. One of my favorites in the garden was the cafe, with all of the gf choices labeled, including an incredible dessert, which I will talk about on the next episode: Gluten-Free Victoria with Ellen from the Celiac Scene. The gardens host a carousel, which, for $2 admission, you can be a kid again (I didn't bring any kids with me, I just love carousels, then stroll through the gardens and visit the dragon water fountain!   After the gardens, I headed over to Victoria Butterfly Gardens "a vibrant jungle experience" reads on their brochure. While I've been to a real jungle AKA rainforest, I can say that this is a sample of a jungle experience, but, an amazing butterfly experience to be had by all! There are a dozen species of butterflies, tropical birds and an insectarium where you can see bugs from the rainforest like the golden scarab beetle. They also have a small herbarium to check out poison dart frogs and the like.     Empress Hotel and the Running of the Goats Among the many historical buildings, the Empress Hotel is one of the most impressive. Recently having a multi-million dollar renovation, this hotel stands tall and proud facing the waterfront and beaming in the rays of the sun setting on the horizon. There is a history behind this building -  a mix of marriage, divorce, an affair with an 18-year-old chauffeur and a battle for inheritance. Typical typhoon story of the late 1800s. The Empress is still up and running today, if you are looking for a luxury stay in Victoria, this is the place you want to be.   speaking of the waterfront, I took strolls down here almost every night, the weather in Victoria picking up the Japanese current, is very mild. Only freezes twice a year and the high temp runs around 75-80. There are 1500 palm trees in Victoria, I didn't see any, but they are apparently there somewhere. The harbor is always teaming with artists, tours, activities and just as you start the climb to Main Street, you can visit the tourism center to book tours, get local information and maps to guide you through Victoria.   The location on the southern end of the Saanich Peninsula gives Victoria such an abundance of outdoor activities. One of my favorites was the walking path called the Harbour Walkway. From here, you can walk several miles around the harbor and take in the views, sit on a park bench and watch wildlife and the cruise ships docking in the harbor. For nature lovers and those who love to walk and enjoy the outdoors, Beacon Hill Park is the perfect spot to ride a bike, walk and especially enjoy the goats at the petting zoo.   Yes, petting zoo. I will totally own being the only person in the petting zoo sans small children. I can't help myself - I am a baby goat addict. When I found out there were baby goats nearby our hotel I was there. This is what I wanted to do for my birthday! Of course, being a baby goat addict, I had to be there as soon as the petting zoo opened. Then, I found everyone asking if we were in line. In what line? I watched as the sea of people who walked in after giving their donation parted like Moses himself had walked down the middle of the crowd. Then, they announced: The running of the goats was here!   Looking for a beautiful place to go, that's gluten-friendly and fun for all ages and interests, I would highly recommend Victoria. There's so much to see and do. After 7 days, I wasn't ready to leave for home and would have loved to spend another 2 weeks exploring the streets by foot.   Listener Shout-Out! East West Street is a memoir by prominent British barrister Philippe Sands. It's a history of atrocity combined with a relentless search for the truth, with Sands digging deep, into both his own family history and the legal framework that eventually brought Nazi war criminals to justice. Powerful stuff, but what did Kate's book club make of it? Did it make for a good book club read? Plus we talk to an all-male book club on the value of friendship and shared conversations about books, and lightly delve into the mystery of what makes a book 'manly'. We end with some recommendations for your next book club read. Jon David congratulates Peter Massey on his 100th Loyal Squire’s punchcard, which amounts to 150lbs purchased tobacco from the Country Squire. New pipe club members announced (I won’t try to butcher their names in text as well.) Addendum note: NOLA Pipe Club will be taking a day trip to the Squire on Saturday 2/24. Topic: JD and Beau reopen the discussion on Pipe Culture, specifically looking at pipe smoking archetypes with community commentary provided by listeners, all detailed below. Additional thanks to www.reddit.com/r/pipetobacco for their contributions to this episode. /u/SupraMario – “I'm in between both, I've got money to blow on lbs of tobacco and pipes I want...but don't (ok ok, not on the TAD part on the PAD I restrain myself). I own a farm but am a pencil pusher by day...So not poor, not super rich, own a farm, but work in an office.” /u/LaphroaigianSlip – “The archetypes in my mind are this; one smokes a smooth red stain or black painted briar and the other smokes a humble cob. The briar has a brass or silver ash guard while the cob is unfinished and uneven at the top. The briar is either a Dublin or Billiard. The cob looks somewhere in between the style of Missouri Meerschaum's Mark Twain and The General. That is, the American farmer. The western European farmer would have a more local pipe made of briar, a small pipe with brown stain. Further east you might imagine someone farming in the hills of Greece with a simple bent Meerschaum, enjoying some Latakia with a bottle of ouzo. Further East still I in vision a Chinese farmer coming home in the evening. He sits down with his bamboo pipe. A durable piece that can last a lifetime, even be passed on generationally like a briar while having similar markings to the well worn corn cob pipe, familiar with being handled by dirty hands. It has the markings of earnest and frequent use. The central idea being that the farmer has his pipe from a more local and practical place while the aristocratic has the luxury of smoking something from another continent. The aristocrat has a clean smooth pipe, one in a rotation while the farmer's pipes each see daily use.” Dillon Shalinder (sp?) – “When I think about the aristocrats, the rich types, I’m reminded of a neat movie called ‘Evil Under the Sun”. The normalcy of seeing a well-to-do man with a pipe allowed the villain to hide a key piece of evidence, that in fact there was a diamond in his pipe the whole movie.” /r/Broskheim – “If we're talking straight stereotypes, the Farmer (blue collar) is the guy who has 1 pipe (probably a cob or a basket briar), and smokes one blend (probably an a drug store OTC) all day long. The Aristocrat is more the type we see on these kinds of forums. Smokes a multitude of blends from a multitude of pipes, probably once or, at most, twice a day. Probably pairs it with a beverage of some sort, and takes time out of his day to specifically enjoy the pipe.” Brad Hoctor (@hoctorthelovedr) – “To me a white collar, or aristocratic pipe smoker, is a bit more picky, typically having artisan-carved pipes and a wide variety of tinned blends in their cellar, whereas the blue collar pipe smoker or farmer is perfectly content with a good ol’ cob and a low-end factory pipe and a pouch of Captain Black.” Darren – “When I think of a Farmer who smokes a pipe I think of Charles Ingalls from ‘The Little House on the Prairie’. He would often enjoy his pipe in the evening after supper at the kitchen table, or outside leaning on the fence rail. Charles was a hard working farmer who enjoyed his pipe. Nothing better than a cool smoke to help wind down after a hard days work. Really enjoy the show.” Corey Grip – “I would like to contribute to the Farmer side. There are pictures of my grandfather who was born in 1927. There are two pictures of him as a kid, and one with my grandmother from 1953. And no we do not have the pipe still unfortunately. The pictures were taken at their 80-acre farm in Oklahoma.” (photos posted to FB) John Kirk Griffin – “Hey brothers, long time listener. I was so excited for this specific episode because, well, I’m a farmer! There’s something beautiful and primal about sitting on a tractor with a pipe packed with your favorite blend. It’s these hours of driving in slow circles that are prime moments for smoking a pipe. Farmers are very contemplative people, we spend many hours doing repetitive and sometimes monotonous work which gives us ample time to think. It’s during these times of deep contemplation that farmers turn to our pipes as our faithful companion. The farmer is a dying breed. We’ve gone from almost 90% farm workers to less than 1% in the US. We are frequently forgotten and sometimes marginalized folk, but we are a tough and resilient folk. And so next time you pack a pipe, remember the farmer who worked hard to grown and harvest those beautiful and tasty leaves. Love you guys, love the show. Keep up the great work.” /u/randallleemorgan – “When I think of the archetype of the farmer I'm reminded of my grandfather, a true Mississippian born and raised outside a small town no one would recognize. A man that worked as a millwright every day of his adult life because that's what he had (and I think loved) to do. Farming was something he didn't do for income but for survival; to make ends meet. Planting his own fruits and vegetables, raising chickens, and even hunting during the fall and winter all to provide for his family. This man is someone who loves a good pipe full of some tobacco, I’m guessing Cherry (Didn’t everyone in the 60’s smoke cherry tobacco). Later in life before I was born he had to lay down the pipe for the sake of my grandmother's heart condition but his the pipe wasn't his only source of vitamin-N. Maybe a nice big cheek-full of some Beechnut Chewing Tobacco while reading the paper or sitting on the tailgate of his old GMC secretly slipping is 4 year old grandson a strip of that chewing tobacco that may or may not have provided the aforementioned grandson his first case of nicotine sickness. The farmer archetype is that of someone who isn’t afraid to get his/her hands dirty. Someone who works hard every day to provide in time of plenty and time of lean. But the pipe is his one guilty pleasure, something just for him. Darren – “I recommend reading this article by Jonah Goldberg called ‘Democracy in the Tobacconist’s’ (http://www.nationalreview.com/article/367088/democracy-tobacconists-jonah-goldberg) and it’s really about cigars but I feel there are a lot of themes that will overlap. The G.K. Chesterton quote in particular addresses why it may be frowned upon and both social strata and why they should not care” G.K. Chesterton quote - "To have a horror of tobacco is not to have an abstract standard of right; but exactly the opposite. It is to have no standard of right whatever; and to make certain local likes and dislikes as a substitute. Nobody who has an abstract standard of right and wrong can possibly think it wrong to smoke a cigar. It is a vague sentimental notion that certain habits were not suitable to the old log cabin or the old hometown. It has a vague utilitarian notion that certain habits are not directly useful in the new amalgamated stores or the new financial gambling-hell. If his aged mother or his economic master dislikes to see a young man hanging about with a pipe in his mouth, the action becomes a sin; or the nearest that such a moral philosophy can come to the idea of a sin. A man does not chop wood for the log hut by smoking; and a man does not make dividends for the Big Boss by smoking; and therefore smoking has a smell as of something sinful." David Sirette – “I’m curious about the shift in preferential pipe shapes over time. I’ve always been told and read that in the 19th and early 20th centuries that bent pipes were preferred by lower-class smokers and manual laborers due to the hands free clench-ability and then straight pipes were preferred by those white-collared and upper class smokers. But then it seems that we began to see a shift mid-century with bent pipes becoming more expensive and artistic and straight billiards becoming a working man’s utility pipe. I’m curious to know what spurred this change. Could it have been that manufacturing techniques drove down the cost of straight pipes? Perhaps it was art and other fashion trends? Even today I would say that when you look at higher end pipes we see more swooping curves and bent stems and less expensive factory pipes in the form of straight billiards and apples. Is what we see a shift in aesthetics only? Or are our behaviors and smoking rituals changing?” Pipe Question of the Week: Ryan Smith in Louisiana asks “When people say a blend is burley-based I figure there are large variations in what the flavors can be. Some burley-based blends are cigarette-like, high in nicotine and a bit harsh smoke for me, but some are mild and nutty that have that awesome codger-like quality. I tend to prefer the latter. Is it a specific type of burley I should be looking for or are the condiment tobaccos more to blame for the large variations? PS. Looking forward to meeting you guys when the NOLA Pipe Club comes up to invade the Squire in February. Thanks for the show and keep up the great work.” Paraphrasing here, but Jon David comments that burleys are varied and not all are created equal. Air cured burley is softer, kind of nutty, more nicotine, and just all around smoother and then we have toasted and fire-cured burleys that are smokier because the leaves are infused with these particles. They’ll be a little more harsh, smoky, toasty. But burley is lurking everywhere. Unless the blend specifically says “no burley”, it’s probably in there somewhere. It’s so adaptable. It’s a chameleon. Takes on flavors of other tobaccos. Ages well. Adds body and nice mouthfeel. Thick clouds of smoke. They also kind of have a bad rap. Some people assume they just don’t like burley when they don’t realize there are many different kinds! Quick Fire with the Squire: Brought in by Mike Kinsey. #1 Transformers (JD and Beau) or G.I. Thanks & Gig Em! @cdumo – “Granted as the grandson of French immigrants, my perspective may be different, but if you were going to smoke, it was briar whether you were a nobleman, farmer, or (as my family was) butcher. The briar pipe (invented in France, let’s not forget) was an equalizer. Alternatively, when you talk to old servicemen, they’ll talk about encountering meerschaum pipes (which many people consider fairly aristocratic) on their travels and seeing them as cheap, poor men’s pipes that could be picked up for pennies and not worth their time.” Ending & Wrap-up: Please check out the show sponsor websites to learn more about them.
