TOTAL PRAISE PSALM 111 The Bible tells us to praise God. It also says to enter His presence with thanksgiving, praise, joyful singing, and blessing His name. God desires truth in our inner being, so our praise must be authentic – not rotely repeating phrases. Praise is our heart's response to the person, presence, position, power, greatness, holiness, majesty, and love of God. Genuine praise requires total involvement of our mind, will, and spirit. What do we praise about God?

Rudy Delaney and Cecilia Flores opened up about their own experiences and the stumbling blocks that can get in the way. The two were selected as delegates from their respective dioceses to attend a June 23-26 gathering in Chicago called “Alive in Christ: Young, Diverse, Prophetic Voices Journeying Together.” About 325 ministry leaders, young adults and bishops came together for the “Journeying Together” process. Delaney, a campus minister at Notre Dame of Maryland University in Baltimore, recounted one episode that happened at the gathering. Known as “the music guy,” Delaney, who is Black, said that on Sunday mornings, “gospel music could be heard at home, or at my parish.” On the first night of the Chicago gathering, some attendees were “speculating and anticipating would be sung at the next day's Mass. You could hear ‘Total Praise' or ‘Hallelujah! Salvation and Glory.' As we remembered those songs we grew up on, there was joy in our hearts that night,” Delaney told the bishops. “When we did not hear the songs that day, we felt disappointed and that it was a missed opportunity,” he said. “It was not the first time,” he added, yet “it is not unique to our culture. You say you get used to it, but you don't.” Then Delaney started wondering, “Is it something that can be fixed? … Was it something that can be possible? It turned out it was. All the relationships were already there.” It turned out that Flores was the one who interceded. “She heard us lament and sing another round of songs,” Delaney said. “It turns out we were rehearsing that night,” as their favorites were incorporated into another liturgy. Delaney said all it took was “honesty, awareness, inclusion and healing.” There were “moments of tension which appeared and perhaps felt chaotic” in Chicago, Flores acknowledged. But there was “a greater reality happening that brought me great joy and hope: shepherds being shepherds, and disciples of the Lord being disciples. The disciples felt their pain; the shepherds listened.” Rejection and clericalism are but two of the reactions young people face more frequently, Flores said. “I wonder what it could be like if we lived church like this every day,” she added, “if young adults felt seen, loved, heard, trusted,” and “what it would take for us to get there.” Flores, a community organizer in Sacramento, California, and chair of the “Journeying Together” young adult multicultural advisory committee, told the bishops that “fostering interpersonal relationships and intergenerational dialogue is needed.” From the Chicago experience, she said, “emerged a new community of leaders with a desire to share thei

Reflections on programming, progress, "the American dream," and more! On January 17th, 2022, as part of The Philadelphia Orchestra's annual day of free community programming in observance of Martin Luther King Jr day, an audience gathered in the Perelman Theater at The Kimmel Center for From Programming to Progress, a live panel discussion with pianist Michelle Cann, Juilliard ethnomusicology professor Dr. Fredara Hadley, and music directoress of Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church and CEO of Next Step Associates, Dr. Cassandra Jones, plus a spotlight interview with Andrea Custis (CEO, Urban League Philadelphia). NOTE: In this episode, Dr. Jones laments the last-minute exclusion of Total Praise from the MLK Tribute concert. This omission was the result of COVID-related complications that made the CAPA choir unavailable to perform as planned and not due to a lack of interest. The Philadelphia Orchestra looks forward to including the piece next year.
Love is the only song I know. It's stuck in my head. On loop AS my Heart. This Divine tune harmonizes my life, carries me, lifts me, sings me, frees me. It 's on repeat so "I" won't have to. This life is successful. "You are the Source of my strength. You are the Strength of my life. I lift my hands in total praise to you." - Total Praise, Richard Smallwood Total Praise by Sunday Choir"God respects me when I work, He loves me when I sing.” - Tagore"There's an ancient Peace you carry in your Heart and have not lost." - ACIM"Someone may be wonderingWhen we sing our songAt times we may be cryingAnd nothing's even wrong… I sing because I'm happy (I sing)I sing because I'm free (His eye's on)His eye's on the sparrow (that's the reason)That's the reason why I sing… Glory, hallelujah (You're the reason)You're the reason why I sing (come on, say glory)Glory, hallelujah (thank you Jesus)You're the reason why I sing." - Kirk Franklin, Why We SingToday's Practice:Choose a song that points you to the present, always 'on', inner worshipping. Allow it to get stuck in your head, tuning you to Joy, replacing your thoughts, replacing the object of worship, replacing even you... leaving only This. Live today as This atmosphere of worship. This is the song stuck in my head, on loop in my heart-- the Mahamantra ( at the 13:45 min mark is the rhythm I sing and chant in constantly). There's places in India where this mantra has gone on non-stop for centuries. People show up and sing in shifts!Wherever you're singing, whatever you're singing, know that I Am (t)here, singing, too. Worshipping, too. Praising, too. Loving, too. Knowing that the lover, the loving, and the one loved are One. We are that One Love. I Love you, Niknikki@curlynikki.com

Psalms 146–150 form the conclusion to the psalms. And each of these five psalms begin and end with the same simple appeal: Praise the LORD. This is a repeated reminder that one of the primary ways that we should relate to God as His privileged subjects is praise, and not just any praise but total praise. Psalm 150 extends an invitation: Let all people in all places use all they have to praise the LORD for all He is and all He has done.

There was very light traffic as I passed McCormick Place onto South Lake Shore Drive. On the right side of the road, I noticed a newly-erected, simple square stone sculpture with the words "You Are Beautiful" engraved large enough for all passersby to read, even at 45-50 miles per hour.As the lake gleamed in the sunlight to my left, I passed the Museum of Science and Industry, the Jackson Park marina, and the 63rd Street beach house. I continued on, down the stately brick three-story townhouses along Jeffrey Boulevard. As I arrived at 79th Street, the streets were quiet, the shops were closed, many stores were boarded up, and many buildings looked like it had been a while since a store operated there.A short walk from the lakefront, the polygon-shaped brick structure which was my destination emerged on my left. A handful of people were scattered around this deceptively spacious auditorium when I walked in. On stage, six singers were running through their final rehearsals and sound checks.Midway through the event, the singers began a rendition of a song called “Total Praise” by Richard Smallwood. It is a song I have known for over 20 years, and it has been therapeutic for me at pivotal moments throughout my adult life.So it was fitting that on this Sunday morning, one day after I attended a memorial service for a close friend, concluding a week of grieving and reflection, that I found myself tearing up as the singers sang the song's chorus:As the choir ran through the series of melodic Amens in the song's bridge, I did not have it in me to lift my hands. I allowed tears to flow, and as the sun moved directly into the window over my head, I allowed myself to feel, and to heal. A few minutes later, an upbeat jazz saxophone solo completed my move from sadness to joy, in remembrance of my friend. The journey continues in the Chatham neighborhood on the south side, at the corner of 79th Street and Coles.Intro Theme Music: Victory Lap by QSTN ft. True to its title, the Cleveland based performer’s independent debut album Road Trip chronicles his multi-faceted journey – starting with playing the sax in church and, over the past decade, founding and leading The Cavor Project, an 11 piece ensemble renowned as one of the most diverse bands in the city. Andre Cavor found the perfect producer to take his artistry to the next level in Darren Rahn, a saxophonist and artist who has worked his studio magic for Whalum and Butler in addition to genre greats Dave Koz, Wayman Tisdale, Najee, Eric Darius, Jeffrey Osborne and Jeff Lorber. The collection includes three original tracks penned by Darren Rahn (“Road Trip,” “Say Something” and “Without A Doubt”), powerhouse covers of Adele’s “Hello” and After 7’s late 80’s smash “Ready or Not,” and five of Andre’s favorite all time gospel tunes – “More Than Anything,” “For Your Glory” (featuring background vocals), “Total Praise,” The Clark Sisters classic “You Brought the Sunshine” and “Heaven,” originally recorded by BeBe and CeCe Winans. “Mixing contemporary jazz and gospel songs on Road Trip felt like a natural extension of my many live performances over the years,” says Andre, who first began playing the sax at 16 but let it go during his eight year stint in the army before rediscovering it in the early 2000s. Internationally acclaimed gospel music icon, Richard Smallwood drops in on Patrick D. McCoy, The African-American Voice in Classical Music to discuss his unique style of infusing classical themes into his celebrated gospel artistry. Smallwood will also discuss his new recording, Promises, which will be available in June 21, 2011. About Richard Smallwood: Richard Smallwood is a legend in his own time. After four decades as one of the most popular inspirational artists in the music business, with classic tunes such as “Total Praise;” “Center of My Joy;” and “I Love the Lord” to his credit, the Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter and pianist continues to enjoy widespread popularity and influence. His songs have been recorded by Whitney Houston, Destiny’s Child, Kelly Price, Gerald Levert, American Idol’s Ruben Studdard, and a who’s who of the gospel world. Even the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, has recently recorded a Richard Smallwood tune, “Faithful,” on her latest CD. Recently, while standing before a recording studio full of hand-picked friends and music industry colleagues, gathered for an intimate live recording session of Smallwood’s new CD, PROMISES (Verity Gospel Music Group), he made a startling confession. “I had not written a song since my mom died in 2005,” he told the stunned audience. “I thought the gift I had dried up. I would try to write and nothing would come. I’d sit at the piano, I’d pray and there was nothing.”
