Goring  “Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.” — 1 Timothy 6:12 NIV Life can be tough for everyone. Nobody has it completely easy. And if you're a follower of Jesus Christ then you know that you're also in a battle, because the devil doesn't want you to have the eternal life that Jesus offers.  Often, the devil's attacks are relentless. I know that we can become so worn down by the evil forces in this world that we feel like giving up. We might even allow ourselves to be attacked without fighting back. The Bible gives us weapons to use for this spiritual warfare and God hasn't left us without help. But lately, I've realized that I haven't been fighting as hard as I should. How often have I allowed the devil to beat me down while I stayed defenseless? It's very easy to listen to negativity and throw yourself a pity party. But in recent years, God helped me realize that I am not defenseless; I can actively and effectively fight back!  We have the power that raised Christ from the dead inside of us (Romans 8:11).  Let's exercise our authority as a Child of God and fight back with the Word of God! Ephesians 6:10-18 teaches us how to be prepared for this daily battle and to win with God on our side. It's called putting on and activating the Armor of God: “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord's people.” Isn't that a powerful promise to cling to? God has given us everything we need to defeat the enemy and to be victorious in Jesus Christ. I've learned to pray the Armor of God verses in the Bible at the start of every day. I've also learned some additional and practical steps to take to overcome attacks from the enemy.  Step One: Go to God. He is our Heavenly Father and stronger than Satan (our ultimate enemy). Read John 16:33.  Step Two: Ask Jesus Christ, our Savior, to pray for you. Read John 17:6-26. Step Three: Listen to Gospel music and worship God in song. Read 2 Chronicles 20:22. Step Four: Read the Bible and apply Scripture to overcome your struggle. Read 1 John 4:4. Step Five: Call a Bible-believing pastor, God-fearing friend, or Christ-following family member and ask them to pray for you. Read Ephesians 6:18. Step Six: Invest in Christian faith-based counseling services. Step Seven: Change your environment by going outdoors for a walk in nature.  One of my favorite Gospel music artists, Dr. Juanita Bynum, says sometimes you need to “praise your way through” dark times and spiritual attacks. Listen to her song “I Don't Mind Waiting” for the encouragement your heart needs. Here's the link: https://youtu.be/_hEiGEfm2uE?si=q0oZLbIXGHxNqph6 Another song that illustrates my devotional points today is “Hold On, Don't Let Go” by Richard Smallwood & Vision. I encourage you to listen to it too. Here's the link: (https://youtu.be/jmPhHNQGjK4?si=G6JBwslbssixvGu2) Remember: God loves you and He's with you, staying by your side, and fighting this battle for you and with you! So, when life hits hard and the enemy's attacks are relentless, go to God because He promises to be there for you. Remember, Jesus Christ has already defeated the devil and with Him, we will ultimately win!

For our final episode of 2023, Alexa is joined by sought-after choral director and vocal coach, Mark De-Lisser. He has worked with the likes of Ariana Grande, Jessie J, and Beverly Knight. He has also been involved in TV shows such as "Our Dementia Choir" with Vicky McClure and "The Masked Singer." Mark made the arrangement of "Stand By Me," which was performed by the Kingdom Choir at the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in 2018. This performance has been streamed over 4 million times. Mark is here to discuss how to sing and teach the gospel vocal style. KEY TAKEAWAYS Gospel music is a Christian genre rooted in the black experience. Known for emotive vocals, call-and-response, and Christian themes, it often features choirs and instruments. Gospel expresses spirituality, joy, or sorrow, with improvisation common. Evolving into sub-genres like traditional and contemporary gospel, it has influenced various music styles, playing a significant role in religious worship and shaping American musical development. When it comes to the question of the cultural appropriation of gospel music, Mark believes that you have to give acknowledgment to where that music came from. You have to think about the composer and the spiritual background of where the music came from and reference it when you come to teach it.  The most important thing you need to remember when singing gospel music is that you need to believe in the words that are coming out of your mouth. Even if you're not a religious person, you should think of a thing or idea that lifts you up and gives you strength.  When singing gospel, allow yourself to be more vulnerable and get wrapped up in the emotion of the piece. Having a licence to be more vulnerable will make it more likely you affect the audience and make them leave with your story.  BEST MOMENTS  ‘Gospel is songs of good news'  ‘It blew my mind because I'd only heard traditional gospel music' ‘They were creating these songs out of a need for freedom'  ‘If you connect you will affect'  ‘We were born singers and society does its best to beat it out of us'  EPISODE RESOURCES  Guest Website: https://markdelisser.com/ Social Media: Instagram: @markdelisser & @mdlsingers Relevant Links & Mentions:  Artists Mentioned: Thomas Dorsey; Kirk Franklin; Maverick City; Mahalia Jackson; Andre Crouch; Walter Hawkins; Richard Smallwood; Donald Lawrence; Johnathan McReynolds; Daryl Coley; Take Six; The Winans; Mischa Paris; Tai Trabet; Anita Wilson; Mary Mary; Tom Odell; CeCe Winans; The Darkness  (Book) So you Want to Sing Gospel: A Guide for Performers by Dr Trineice Robinson-Martin Dr Trineice Robinson-Martin Dane Chalfin Felton and Norton Community Gospel Choir  BAST Book A Call: basttraining.com/bookacall/ ABOUT THE GUEST  Mark De-Lisser is one of the most sought after choral directors and vocal coaches in the UK. Niya Cotton's life narrative is interwoven with a legacy of music. Born to a father who graced the ranks of original Richard Smallwood singers and a mother who commanded rhythm as a seasoned drummer, Niya's destiny as a musical communicator was evident from the start. Her journey commenced at the tender age of 2 in her church's youth choir, a stepping stone to her emergence as an artist of exceptional caliber. Graduating as salutatorian from Washington, D.C.'s Duke Ellington School of the Arts in 2000 and later earning a B.A. in Vocal Performance from Hampton University in 2004, Niya's artistic foundation was solidified. Her path led her to Los Angeles, where she contributed her talents to Warner Brothers' TV Music department, leaving her mark on prominent television shows. Her harmonious tones reverberated beyond screens, gracing tracks for renowned artists like Michael Bublé and Chance the Rapper. Notably, she etched her presence in Kirk Franklin's album "Losing My Religion," a turning point that paved the way for her enduring collaboration with the Fo Yo Soul family. Beyond music, Niya's influence extended through "The Whole Tone LLC," a venture nurturing wholeness through art, education, and entertainment. As a worship leader, creative director, and mentor, she continues to orchestrate a life that marries artistry with profound purpose, all while embracing her role as a dedicated parent alongside her husband Roy in the Dallas/Ft. David Pulley had a gift for songwriting long before the world knew. Growing up in a family of 11 siblings, music became an outlet for him. David was exposed to the Gospel greats, including the works of Andrae Crouch, Walter Hawkins, Richard Smallwood, and Percy Bady. Beginning at an early age, David wrote poetry that he used as a base to construct his song. Sensing a need to encourage his passions, his mother sent him and his sister to music lessons. David initially took to playing drums while his sister started playing piano, and he soon started copying what he heard his sister playing during her piano lessons. The instructor noticed this and informed his mother of his substantial progress. David graduated from his original drum lessons and started instruction on the Hammond organ. He excelled at the organ and quickly elevated to teacher's assistant, working with new students. He began playing for his home church at the age of 12.

The Worship revealed in Scripture seems foreign to us when we gaze at the culture and how it presents worship. Have we gotten too superficial with worship? Is our understanding of biblical worship anemic and self-centered? Do Christians practice worship in isolation with God today or is it reserved for the big stage?  We take a peek behind the veil of Christian culture and into the heart of the 'worship experience'. PS. Episode 86 Merry Moog 2022 Vintage Holiday Music Performed on the Moog and other Synthesizers Playlist Frank Luther with Zora Layman, “Christmas Bells” from Christmas In Song (1939 Decca). This is the original 78 RPM release featuring a vocal quartet, bells, and music played on the Hammond Novachord. 0:38 Frank Luther with Zora Layman, “Christmas Day in the Morning” from Christmas In Song (1958 Vocalion). This is a reissue of the 1939 release featuring a vocal quartet, Zora Layman, bells, and music played on the Hammond Novachord. The stereo is simulated. There are some nice moments for the Novachord on this record. 3:12 Paul Tanner, “Holiday on Saturn” from Music for Heavenly Bodies (1958 Omega). This rare disc features Tanner playing the Electro-theremin, an imitation of the Theremin that was a box with an audio oscillator inside and a rotary dial to control the pitch. Tanner, a renown studio musician and trombone player, later provided the sound of the Electro-theremin on the Beach Boys hit Good Vibrations (1966). 4:16 Greg Lake, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, “I Believe In Father Christmas” from I Believe in Father Christmas (1995 Rhino). Produced by Keith Olsen; written by Greg Lake, Peter Sinfield; vocals, Bass, Acoustic Guitar, Electric Guitar, Greg Lake; Drums, Percussion, Carl Palmer; Hammond organ, Piano, Moog Synthesizer, Keith Emerson. This is the original version released in 1975 with a choir and Moog Modular. It differs significantly from the stripped-down mix, also included on this CD, originally appearing on Works Vol. 2 in 1977 and then later in 1994. Rhino Records was kind enough to package all of ELP's X-Mas related tunes onto a CD EP in 1995, from which this version comes. 3:34 Keith Emerson, “Troika (From Prokofiev's Lieutenant Kije Suite)” from The Christmas Album (1995 Rhino). This is the Prokofiev composition that Greg Lake adapted into “I Believe in Father Christmas.” Later on, Emerson released this interpretation of the Prokofiev piece on The Christmas Album” that appeared in the US in 1995. It doesn't appear on the original UK version in 1988. And again, this is taken from the nifty holiday CD EP also released in 1995 by Rhino. This album was made with instruments from Korg, Ensoniq, Alesis, and Opcode. 4:19 Jean Jacques Perrey and Sy Mann, “Jingle Bells” from Switched on Santa (1970 Pickwick). Moog Modular Synthesizer, Sy Mann; Moog Modular Synthesizer Programmed by, Jean-Jacques Perrey. 1:44 Douglas Leedy, “The Coventry Carol” from A Very Merry Electric Christmas to You (1970 Capitol). Moog Modular Synthesizer and Buchla Synthesizer. 4:46 Jean Jacques Perrey and Sy Mann, “Christmas Bells” from Switched on Santa (1970 Pickwick). Moog Modular Synthesizer, Sy Mann; Moog Modular Synthesizer Programmed by, Jean-Jacques Perrey. 1:52 Don Voegeli, “Chanukah” from Holiday & Seasonal Music (1977 EMI). Produced at the Electrosonic Studio of the University of Wisconsin-Extension. Don wrote the original synthesized version of the NPR “All Things Considered” theme. It was created in his Electronic Studio of the University of Wisconsin. He used a Moog Modular Synthesizer plus a Fender Rhodes, Polymoog, and ARP string synthesizer and 16-track recorder. 1:02 Joseph Byrd, “Christmas in the Morning” from A Christmas Yet to Come (1975 Takoma). ARP 2600 Synthesizer with an Oberheim Expander Module. 1:34 Douglas Leedy, “Good King Wenceslas” from A Very Merry Electric Christmas to You (1970 Capitol). Moog Modular Synthesizer and Buchla Synthesizer. Leedy was an American composer, performer and music scholar. He founded the electronic music studio at UCLA where he had access to both Moog Modular and Buchla synthesizers, and it was during this period from about 1969-71 that he was commissioned to create several albums of electronic music. His training as a minimalist and experimental composer always flavored his music with unexpected sounds and patterns. 3:05 Moog Machine, “O Holy Night” from Christmas Becomes Electric (1970 Columbia). Moog Modular Synthesizer. 2:43 Armen Ra (Armen Hovanesian), “O Come All Ye Faithful” from Theremin Christmas (2018 Sungod). Moog Etherwave Pro Theremin. Armen Ra is an American artist and performer of Iranian-Armenian descent. He plays Theremin. His music fuses Armenian folk music with modern instrumentation, along with melodic lounge standards and classical arias. 4:43 Don Voegeli, “Carol of the Drum” from Holiday & Seasonal Music (1977 EMI). Produced at the Electrosonic Studio of the University of Wisconsin-Extension. 1:01 Philippe Renaux, “Noël Blanc” (“White Christmas”) from We Wish You A Cosmic Christmas (1977 Sinus). Belgium. Minimoog, Arp Axe, Arp Soloist, EMS Synthesizer, Stringman Crumar, Fender Rhodes, Electronic Drums. 3:21 Jean Jacques Perrey and Sy Mann, “Tijuana Christmas” from Switched on Santa (1970 Pickwick). Moog Modular Synthesizer, Sy Mann; Moog Modular Synthesizer Programmed by, Jean-Jacques Perrey. 1:58 Joseph Byrd, “Carol of the Bells” from A Christmas Yet to Come (1975 Takoma). ARP 2600 Synthesizer with an Oberheim Expander Module. 1:12 Андрій Кок (Andriy Kok), “Небо І Земля” (“Heaven and Earth”) from Різдво На Галичині. Колядки (Christmas in Galicia. Christmas carols) (2006 Ліда). Folk singer, accordion and synth player Andriy Kok has recorded many albums of Ukrainian folk music in addition to a number of holiday songs and carols. 5:00 Douglas Leedy, “In Dulci Jubilo” from A Very Merry Electric Christmas to You (1970 Capitol). Moog Modular Synthesizer and Buchla Synthesizer. 1:14 Bernie Krause, Philip Aaberg, “Deck the Halls” from A Wild Christmas (1994 Etherean Music ). This delightful cassette is from Bernie Krause, known for his Moog explorations with Paul Beaver back in the day. He later turned his attention to audio ecology and the recording of nature sounds, particularly of animals. This very special Holiday recording is composed entirely of animal sounds. Some you'll recognize as the natural animal voices themselves. Others may sound like instruments, but they are actually digitally transformed animal sounds. Wild Sanctuary Productions invites you to enjoy a truly unique celebration of both the wild kingdom and Holiday Spirit. All animal and ambient sounds recorded on location worldwide by Bernie Krause with the exception of the fish (courtesy of U.S. Navy). Animal samples, Bernie Krause and Phil Aaberg. Arrangements, new materials, all keyboards (K 2000/Emulator III) Phil Aaberg. 8:12 The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Paul Freeman, and The Chicago Synthesizer-Rhythm Ensemble, John Tatgenhorst, “The Little Drummer Boy” from Turned On Christmas (1985 Columbia). Conductor, Paul Freeman; synthesizers, The Chicago Synthesizer-Rhythm Ensemble; Orchestra, The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Keyboards & Synthesizer Concepts: Ed Tossing; Electric Bass, Steve Rodby or Bob Lizik; Drums, Tom Tadke; Guitars, Ross Traut and Bill Ruppert; Percussion, Russ Knutson. 4:08 Montana Sextet, “Little Drummer Boy Jam” from Christmas Time Is Here (1987 Philly Sound Works). Arranged By, Conductor, Producer, Fender Rhodes, Piano, Cowbell, Shaker, Yamaha DX7 Synthesizer, Musser Vibraharp, Vincent Montana Jr.; Congas, Greg Peache Jarman; Guitar, Ronnie James; Snare Drum, Tenor And Bass Drum, Gene Leone. 8:46 Montana Sextet, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” from Christmas Time Is Here (1987 Philly Sound Works). Arranged By, Conductor, Producer, Fender Rhodes, Piano, Cowbell, Shaker, Yamaha DX7 Synthesizer, Musser Vibraharp, Vincent Montana Jr.; Congas, Greg Peache Jarman; Guitar, Ronnie James; Snare Drum, Tenor and Bass Drum, Gene Leone. 4:56 Mannheim Steamroller, “Good King Wenceslas” from Christmas (1984 American Gramaphone). Arranged, conducted, produced by, Chip Davis; Drums, Percussion, Soloist Recorder, Black Oak Hammered Dulcimer, Soprano Dulcian, Crumhorn, Bells, Vocals, Dry Ice, Chip Davis; Lute, Bass, Eric Hansen; Baldwin SD-10 Synthesizer, Harpsichord, Clavichord, Toy Piano, Prophet 5 Synthesizer, Fender Rhodes, Vocals, Bells, Jackson Berkey; Classical Guitar, Twelve-String Guitar, Ron Cooley; Flute, Willis Ann Ross; French Horn, David (High D) Kappy; Harp, Mary Walter; Oboe, Bobby Jenkins; Strings, Bill Ritchie, Grace Granata, Michael Strauss, Michelle Brill, Richard Altenbach, Richard Lohmann, Roxanne Adams, Wayne Anderson. 3:39 Don Voegeli, “Jingle Bells” long, short, and tag from Holiday & Seasonal Music (1977 EMI). Produced at the Electrosonic Studio of the University of Wisconsin-Extension. 1:56 Don Voegeli, “Lully, Lullay - The Coventry Carol” from Holiday & Seasonal Music (1977 EMI). Produced at the Electrosonic Studio of the University of Wisconsin-Extension. 1:01 Fossergrim, “Ave Maria” (2020 Bandcamp). Fossegrim is billed as “Dungeon Synth music from the Adirondack Mountains.” In Scandinavian folklore, Fossergrim is is described as an exceptionally talented fiddler. No fiddles here. I think Fossergrim is one Ian Nichols of Albany, New York. Check out his Bandcamp presence. 3:54 Phillip Fraser, “Rub A Dub Christmas” from Rub-A-Dub Christmas (1985 Tuff Gong). Jamaican reggae recording for the holidays. Piano, Organ, Synthesizer, Bass, King Asher, Steely Johnson. 2:53 Phillip Fraser, “The Lord Will Provide” from Rub-A-Dub Christmas (1985 Tuff Gong). Jamaican reggae recording for the holidays. Piano, Organ, Synthesizer, Bass, King Asher, Steely Johnson. There is some crazy synth material on this track. Despite it being recorded in 1985, it sounds quite analog for a synth. 3:17 Unconditional Loathing, “Carol, with the bells” from Holiday Mood (2018 Bandcamp). Every artist dreams of releasing an album of hit holiday songs that will surprise the world and bring great wealth. This is not that album. But it is remarkably noisy and dark. Check out Unconditional Loathing, from Fargo North Dakota, on Bandcamp. Self-described as “A footnote in the history of Midwestern noise that refuses to completely go away.” 1:51 The Smurfs, “Deck the Halls” from Merry Christmas With The Smurfs (1983 Dureco Benelux). This album is in English from the Netherlands. 2:17 Vatto Lofi, “Holiday Lofi” from A Merry Lofi Christmas EP (2021 Bandcamp). Providing a low-fidelity tune for the holidays, but I don't know if “lofi” refers to the low-fidelity sound that is currently a thing (and it does sound like that) or is the actual name of this Icelandic musician. 2:21 Rotary Connection, “Silent Night” from Peace (1968 Cadet Concept). I think this holiday album from the famed psychedelic soul ensemble was perhaps only their second album. Produced by Charles Stepney and Marshall Chess, I've included this track not only because it features some crazy electric guitar but also because Minnie Riperton's five-1/2-octave vocal range could effectively imitate a Theremin, which begins in this track around 1:30 into it. In an interview I once heard her say that one of her childhood fascinations was imitating that “science fiction stuff” with her voice. Interestingly, Charles Stepney also included a Moog synthesizer, used sparingly, on some Rotary Connection tracks, but I've heard none on this album. Co-producer Marshall Chess often added Theremin to Rotary songs but this is not one of them. It's pure Ripperton. The Rotary Connection vocalists: Bobby Simms, Jim Donlinger, Jim Nyeholt, Minnie Riperton, Mitch Aliota, Sidney Barnes, Tom Donlinger; The studio band, Leader, David Chausow; Bill Bradley, electronic effects; guitar, Bobby Christian; bass, Louis Satterfield; bass, Phil Upchurch; bass vocals, Chuck Barksdale. 3:52 Klaus Wunderlich, “Sleigh Ride” from Multi Orchestral Organ Sound (1982 Teldec). Wunderlich was a prolific musician who mastered the Hammond Organ. Occasionally, he performed with a synthesizer and this track comes from an album not of holiday music but of various favorites, performed in the style of the original artists. This is a Leroy Anderson song arranged in the Anderson style. The MOOS (Multi Orchestral Organ Sound) was produced by the Wersi organ company in Germany. This organ/synth/drum machine hybrid was also known as the Wersi Galad and play both synth and traditional organ sounds. There is a current musician advocate for this instrument in Florian Hutter (listen to the next track), of Germany. 3:11 Florian Hutter, “Frosty the Snowman” privately released (2022 No Label). Florian is a living master of the vintage Wersi Delta and Atlantis synthesizer/organ hybrids with a built-in rhythm box. In recent years he has begun to release his music on Spotify. This is taken from the first or second day of his Christmas Special 2022 during which he releases a new tune every day. I don't normally feature tracks recorded from YouTube, but this was too good to pass by and it fits with the vintage music played in the previous track by Wunderlich. Check him out. 2:34 Edwin Hawkins, “The Christmas Song” from The Edwin Hawkins Christmas Album (1985 Birthright). Produced when the Yamaha DX-7 became the top selling synthesizer on the planet, this is a great example of its tidy, digital sound. Richard Smallwood, keyboards, synthesizer; Edwin Hawkins, keyboards, synthesizer; Joel Smith, Drums and Fender bass; Kenneth Nash, percussion. Sounds like one or two Yamaha DX-7s. 3:57 Ryuichi Sakamoto (坂本龍), “Father Christmas” from Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence (戦場のメ)(1983 Virgin). Music By, Composed By, Performer, Ryuichi Sakamoto. Our best wishes to Mr. Sakamoto who is suffering from Stage 4 cancer. In June he said, “Since I have made it this far in life, I hope to be able to make music until my last moment, like Bach and Debussy whom I adore.” 2:06 Bob Wehrman, John Bezjian and Dusty Wakeman, “Ring Christmas Bells” from Christmas Becomes Electric (1984 Tropical Records). Not be confused with an album by the same name by The Moog Machine in 1969. Unnamed synthesizer programmed and performed by Bob Wehrman and John Bezjian. From Marina Del Rey in California. 1:46 Hans Wurman, “Overture Miniature” from Electric Nutcracker (1976 Ovation). This Austrian composer made several remarkable, classically influenced Moog Modular albums from 1969 to 1976. This was one of his last big Moog projects and is difficult to find. 2:54 Hans Wurman, “Danse De La Fee-Dragee ( Sugar Plum Fairy)” from Electric Nutcracker (1976 Ovation). Moog Modular synthesizer, Hans Wurman. 1:33 Hans Wurman, “Danse Des Mirlitons (Flutes)” from Electric Nutcracker (1976 Ovation). Moog Modular synthesizer, Hans Wurman. 2:14 Keith Emerson, Emerson Lake & Palmer, “Nutrocker” (live) from Pictures at an Exhibition (1972 Cotillion). A fitting reworking of Tchaikovsky arranged by Kim Fowley and performed live, Newcastle City Hall, 26 March 1971. Hammond C3 and L100 organs, Moog modular synthesizer, Minimoog, Clavinet, Keith Emerson; bass guitar, acoustic guitar, vocals, Greg Lake; drums, percussion, Carl Palmer. "Nut Rocker", a rock adaptation of The Nutcracker originally arranged by Kim Fowley and recorded by B. Bumble and the Stingers in 1962. 3:48 Richie Havens, “End of the Season” from Alarm Clock (1970 Stormy Forest). A melancholic reflection on life from Mr. Havens, totally synthesized on the Moog Modular by Bob Margoleff. 3:32 Bernie Krause, Philip Aaberg, “Feliz Navidad” from A Wild Christmas (1994 Etherean Music ). This delightful cassette is from Bernie Krause, known for his Moog explorations with Paul Beaver back in the day. All animal and ambient sounds recorded on location worldwide by Bernie Krause with the exception of the fish (courtesy of U.S. Navy). Animal samples, Bernie Krause and Phil Aaberg. Arrangements, new materials, all keyboards (Kurzweil 2000/Emulator III) Phil Aaberg. Percussion on Feliz Navidad performed by Ben Leinbach. 5:37 Opening background music: Jean Jacques Perrey and Sy Mann, “Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer” from Switched on Santa (1970 Pickwick). Moog Modular Synthesizer, Sy Mann; Moog Modular Synthesizer Programmed by Jean-Jacques Perrey. 2:16 Moog Machine, “Twelve Days Of Christmas” from Christmas Becomes Electric (1970 Columbia). Arranged by Alan Foust; Synthesizer Tuner, Norman Dolph; Moog Modular Synthesizer, Kenny Ascher. 3:55 Jean Jacques Perrey and Sy Mann, “Silent Night” from Switched on Santa (1970 Pickwick). Moog Modular Synthesizer, Sy Mann; Moog Modular Synthesizer Programmed by Jean-Jacques Perrey. 1:52 Opening and closing sequences voiced by Anne Benkovitz. Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. See my companion blog that I write for the Bob Moog Foundation For additional notes, please see my blog, Noise and Notations.

Candace A. Gray (aka Candy Fox) was born and raised in Memphis and has always lived a double life. She's a Gemini and she's always operated well in both left and right brain spaces. Candace's mother (RIP) always told her to never rely on ONE thing to sustain you...and that concept has remained with her since high school! Candace is marketing and communications professional by day...and a singer/songwriter by night (hence the stage name Candy Fox). She sings mostly Soul Music, which is native to Memphis. And as the Founder and CEO of CG Comms Group, Candace serves several local clients who make Memphis what it is from cultural, economic and artistic perspectives. Throughout her communications career, Candace has worked in the private (archer malmo, inc.) and public (FedEx) sector, for-profit and non-profit (Freedom Prep Charter Schools). In true Memphis spirit, she started my own full-service, boutique communications agency, DURING THE PANDEMIC! And she's seen much success, as a result of a great work ethic and referrals! Throughout her music career, Candy Fox has sung with some of the best in the business, from R&B and Soul to Blues to Gospel, to Hip Hop, including 8Ball & MJG, Al Kapone, Charrelle & Alexander O'Neal, Howard Hewett and Shalamar, Jennifer Holliday, Richard Smallwood, Kurt Carr, Chico DeBarge, The Legendary Barkays, and the list goes on. Candy Fox also released her own project, Soul Stir, independently after leaving the Hip Hop collective Free Sol, who won the Mid-South Grammy Showcase in 2004 and released the album 11:11 on Memphis Records. Soul Stir, a true work of art, is available on all electronic platforms. Somewhere in betwixt all of that, Candace found time to get married to her wonderful partner and bring life into this world, in the form of a son, at the age of 41! She's also a dog mom, and her little family currently resides in Memphis. Candace is the epitome of Memphis. She makes things happen, as opposed to waiting for them to happen. In the studio he has recorded vocals for Chavous, Sarah's Girl, Geneva Renee, Tye Tribbett, Jim Stephens, and Will Downing. In 2016, Ashley has released his debut single “Words.”  Ashley went back to his roots with the recording process of this song. “The song was written and composed by Alysha Ashley and I. She is from Kentucky and while composing this song I wanted to enhance the song with more lush arrangement and vocals, which is what you don't here in the music of today. With an ensemble of the best musicians and vocalists from the Philly area, we recorded the song in the Lab studios with engineer Craig White (formerly of Philadelphia International Records). We also had some additional production assistance from Will Downing which was an honor” Though the song is about being in love it is more about the interaction of a couple in the heat of a discussion. It encourages the listener to watch your “Words” and if you don't have an answer in that moment then it is ok to table it for another time.Ashley's latest single “Don't Throw Our Love Away” reached the #3 spot on the UK Soul Chart!!! To continue on the success of this song a remix, for all you that love house music, is scheduled for release in June. Jesus asked Peter three times,“Do you love me?” as recorded in John 21:15–17. This occurred when Jesus was having breakfast with His disciples soon after His resurrection. Jesus used this opportunity to encourage and exhort Peter about his upcoming responsibilities and even to prophesy the manner in which Peter will die. By asking Peter, “Do you love me?” three times, Jesus was emphasizing the importance of Peter’s love and unswerving obedience to his Lord as necessary for his future ministry.    Episode 90 If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. By the '60s, gospel music had firmly established a foothold in mainstream American culture. This opened the door for soul stars such as Aretha Franklin and Marvin Gaye to complete the bridge between gospel and pop. They both grew up immersed in the harmonies and rhythms of the church and brought those sensibilities into their pop music. This episode looks at the gospel background and lasting musical legacy of Aretha and Marvin.

This episode tells the story behind The Edwin Hawkins Singers' ceiling-shattering song, ""Oh Happy Day". It was the first gospel song to top the secular charts. Hawkins' use of contemporary sounds - a Latin groove, synthesizers and a soul-influenced lead vocal performance - created a new model for gospel music. But some in the church didn’t want sanctified music to leave the sanctuary.

“It’s God that orders our steps. If you want to enjoy success, don’t chase after the market, chase after God.” - Greg Nelson   This week on The Song Revolution Podcast, John Chisum had the honor of sitting with award-winning Christian Music Producer, Greg Nelson. Greg has produced recordings for artists such as Sandi Patty, Steve Green, Larnelle Harris, Twila Paris, Michael Crawford, and Richard Smallwood. He has received 20 Dove Awards and over 30 nominations, 7 Grammy Awards, 13 Grammy nominations, along with a host of other awards and recognitions. He has written hundreds of songs and also co-written successful neo-classical works that have toured internationally. Although he has achieved such incredible success in his music career, Greg is one of the most humble and authentic men you could ever meet. His interview reveals the depths of his heart, and his genuine desire to pursue the calling that God has placed on his life no matter the circumstance.   “I’m not the best. I’m not the worst. I don’t keep score, I just write, and God uses it.” - Greg Nelson   This article is full of priceless advice for the songwriter to take to heart. Greg discusses the importance of pursuing your life’s message. When you are clear on the mission the God has given for your life, and you pursue it with all of your heart, it is God who brings the increase. Success is found when we focus on chasing after the passion God has given us, instead of trying to fit what we’re doing inside the framework of what is currently trending on the charts.   Greg shares his journey to songwriting success, and what it was like to make a shift in his focus when inspirational music became less popular. Instead of hanging onto a genre that was fading or pursuing a popular genre that was outside of his giftings, Greg dove into the neo-classical works. He continued pursuing the genres that made his heart sing, and God used that passion to create long-lasting success.   Listen in to hear more about Greg’s story, timeless wisdom for aspiring songwriters, the best way to achieve success in songwriting, and how Greg has maintained a sense of humility in the face of incredible success.   “Writing for the market goes by the wayside. Instead, write what the Lord has placed on your heart.” - Greg Nelson   If you would like to know more about Greg and his story, check out his book, Runaway Horse.   Some topics we talk about in this episode:   Introduction // Greg Nelson- 1:24 The Secret to Success - 10:32 Greg’s Songwriting Story - 23:45 Greg’s Oratorios - 31:12 The Importance of Writing from Scripture - 37:39 Greg’s TedX Talk - 47:57 The Wide World of Song Possibility - 53:42 Wrap Up - 1:01:12 How to get involved Join the Successful Christian Songwriters Group on Facebook and continue the discussion! https://www.facebook.com/groups/SuccessfulChristianSongwriters/ Check out all of the resources for you to become the songwriter you were meant to be at www.nashvillechristiansongwriters.com   If you liked this episode, be sure to subscribe and leave a quick review on iTunes. Do You Have Strong Feelings About Lying?

I’ve asked this question on our Facebook page, Sunday, and got some strong responses.  Nobody likes it.  The Lord hates it. Talking about lying and what I’ve been doing lately. Bible reading about David and Saul.  Music from Richard Smallwood, I’ll Trust You. This ministry has a ASCAP license.     According to the Bible, the ninth of God’s Ten Commandments instructs that no person shall bear false witness against their neighbor. In other words, you shouldn’t lie.      There are many logical reasons to avoid telling lies Remembering your lies Losing people’s trust A bad reputation It’s addictive Legal ramifications Shattered relationships Self-esteem Losing your identity      Proverbs 6:16-19   There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.       Proverbs 12:22   Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who act faithfully are his delight.      Proverbs 19:9   A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who breathes out lies will perish.      Psalm 101:7   No one who practices deceit shall dwell in my house; no one who utters lies shall continue before my eyes.      Colossians 3:9-10   Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.      Proverbs 12:19   Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue is but for a moment.

Jazz, Jesus, and the Business of Music | Eric Reed

Eric Reed is a piano player well know in jazz circles. He has played with some of the great musicians of our time. In today's episode Eric shares the keys to success on how to navigate the business of music for the next generation. We also dive deep into creating your signature sound as a musician. Being a musician is balancing the art with the industry of music. Eric's passion for music is rooted deeply in family and faith. He shares how these two elements build his success in music and how it impact his humanity. In today's episode we also dive deep into the plans of God, faith as an action, creating music with message, getting to the other side of pain, wrestling with depression, where to find your validation, lessons from our dads, learning from those living, the politics of music, being patient in your career, diversification, hustling, goal setting, working smarter not harder , and much more.“I don’t view art as contemporary, modern, traditional, old or new,” says pianist-composer Eric Reed. “Nor do I endorse cliques or camps. I promulgate integrity in all things.”Through more than a quarter-century as a first-caller on the jazz scene, Reed has articulated this inclusive conception as a leader of numerous ensembles, solo performer, composer, producer, educator, and sideman with numerous artists, including extended stints with Buster Williams, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard and Wynton Marsalis. Whatever the context, whatever the style, he consistently animates the flow with fresh ideas, virtuosic chops, intellectual clarity and an unwavering will to groove. On a remarkable series of recent recordings, Reed illuminates his aesthetic scope, navigating diverse terrain with intense focus and sagely concision. Consider, for example, one of Reed’s most recent releases, The Adventurous Monk, a 2014 date on which he offers idiomatic yet personalized, loose yet cohesive interpretations of ten works by the genius pianist-composer Thelonious Monk. It’s Reed’s third Monk project since 2009, when he made The Dancing Monk, followed in 2011 by The Baddest Monk, on which he addresses the iconic songs with just the right admixture of maverick recklessness and natural command. “I imbibed heavily on Monk’s music as I became more immersed in composition and my journey as an artist,” Reed remarks. “The rhythmic, harmonic and melodic variety in his pieces inspire, allow and compel me to embrace the challenge of trying to convey messages in a non-verbal manner.”A similar spirit of grounded exploration infuses Reed’s most recent release and first live recording, Groovewise, on which he navigates mainly original music on the bandstand. The spontaneity of live performance comes through on Stand!, a jubilant-to-introspective 2009 studio date on which Reed presents 11 pieces inspired by biblical themes. On two other in-studio trios—Something Beautiful from 2011 and Here, a 2006 session —Reed coalesces his own pieces with repertoire from popular songs, less-traveled jazz classics and gospel, deploying a wide range of moods and dynamics in the manner of a live set. Different in ambiance but equally impromptu is Reed’s Reflections Of A Grateful Heart, a contemplative, subdued solo recital of hymns, spirituals and gospel songs from his pen and, among others, Edwin and Walter Hawkins, Richard Smallwood and Billy Taylor.“The older I get, the more I start to see my musical, spiritual and personal influences as all one stream of consciousness,” Reed says. “When I was younger, I was exposed to music in my house, my neighborhood or in school; I didn’t care about what it was labeled. When I became a professional musician in my teens, the lines between the different styles were drawn in big red marker. Now, I’m not concerned about highlighting and the imposed differences. The musical experiences are all tied together.”Reed developed the core principles of his musical sensibility almost from the time he began to speak. “Before I could even reach the pedals,” he recalls, he was playing for and enhancing worship services for the congregants in the small Baptist storefront church in West Philadelphia where his father, a quartet singer, sang and preached. “My earliest experiences in the Holiness church were colored with charisma; people were moved largely by emotion,” he says of that functional setting. “Music played a major role in manipulating these emotions, even inciting people to dance. I developed my ear in an extraordinary way; if someone started to sing, I could quickly find their key and begin to accompany them.”Noting their son’s exceptional talent, Reed’s parents signed him up for private piano lessons at age 5, which continued at South Philly’s prestigious Settlement Music School. In the meantime, his aunt and uncle scoured flea markets for records. “They found these records by Horace Silver, Art Blakey and Dave Brubeck. Additionally, in our home, all kinds of music could be heard on the stereo and the radio because my parents and older siblings were into gospel and popular forms of music.” Reed recalls. “I listened to everything.”When Reed was 11, his family migrated to Huntington Park, California, a suburb near Los Angeles with a well-stocked neighborhood library where he continued to self-educate, reading various biographies, theory books and absorbing records. Soon, he enrolled in The Community School of Performing Arts (now The Colburn School), where his mentor Jeff Lavner, introduced him to even more recordings. In 1986, Wynton Marsalis conducted a master class there and took immediate notice of Reed. Marsalis connected the school to tenor saxophonist-educator-arranger Harold Battiste Jr., who was asked to develop an improvisational workshop. Eric reminisces, “Mr. Battiste was a soulful and lovely human being. He was patient and loving with me, taking me to clubs all around L.A. to check out music.”Wynton recalls, “Eric had great ears and already had formed his musical personality. He had a phenomenal level of talent for his age; I’ve only met four or five musicians with that extreme ability. He’s intelligent and curious; you don’t have to spend a lot of time explaining stuff to him. And there’s his pedigree: he grew up in the church, so he had direct exposure to the vernacular.” By his late teens, Reed, who had won several local music competitions judged by the likes of Horace Silver, Billy Higgins and Ernie Andrews, began to work professionally with tenor saxophone legends Teddy Edwards and Buddy Collette, Gerald Wilson, The Clayton Brothers and Clora Bryant. After matriculating at California State University, Northridge, Reed officially assumed the piano chair with Marsalis in June 1990 — and moved to New York City.Except for an 18-month return to Los Angeles in 1994-95, when he apprenticed with Benny Carter, Freddie Hubbard and Joe Henderson, New York remained Reed’s base of operations for the next decade-plus. From the jump, Reed became deeply entrenched in New York’s hardcore jazz scene, entering the rotation at Bradley’s, the legendary New York piano saloon, where masters bonded with students, providing a platform for Reed and his peers to cut their teeth. He documented seminal and now classic works on a series of trio and combo albums, It’s All Right To Swing, The Swing and I, Musicale, Pure Imagination and Manhattan Melodies.“In the heyday of the ‘90s, we were all devoutly and intensely devoted to the idea of what we thought Jazz was supposed to be,” Reed remarks. “Integrity has always been part of my essence, presenting a wide variety of music in a relevant fashion. Wherever the music goes, I want to go there and be present in that moment, not just a stylist.”After initial forays at applying this dictum on recordings, Reed curated concerts and produced studio dates for other artists, notably in a series called Jazz Composer Portraits for Manhattan’s Miller Theater from 2001-03, eliciting creative, unified performances of music by pianists Elmo Hope and Donald Brown, drummer James Black, alto saxophonist Eric Dolphy, bassist Ben Wolfe and the legendary Billy Strayhorn.“I like taking on the challenge of trying to make something my own, while attempting to honor the composer’s intentions,” Reed says. “I’ve embraced the songbooks of many composers and being able to draw from these different sources has helped me to find my own compositional voice. Some people find their voice early; some find it later. Earlier on, composing was more something that I did by default because I had a studio date coming up. On It’s All Right To Swing and Musicale, it was about the arrangement and presentation of the piece. Now, I incorporate more of my improvisational ideas into the way I write. I trust the musicians to interpret it and whatever happens, happens.”Throughout the ‘00s, Reed provided artistic direction for singers Paula West and Mary Stallings, for whom he produced 2013’s But Beautiful. “The art of accompanying singers has been ingrained in me since I was a child playing in church,” he remarks. Reed also began to teach privately under the auspices of Juilliard School of Music, the New School and Manhattan School of Music, helping to direct young luminaries like Aaron Diehl and Kris Bowers towards paths that “might help enhance what they were already doing and get them to become more developed musicians. This is why I don’t call myself a teacher, but a mentor.”“The bandstand is where the real education is,” Reed says. “The only way musicians truly learn what’s valuable is by being in the trenches. I thank God that so many of the old guard embraced me. I was truly and wonderfully blessed.”In 2008, Eric moved back to his beloved Los Angeles, jumping feet first into the local scene as musical director for Regina Taylor’s critically acclaimed musical Crowns, which ran for the entire summer at the Nate Holden Performing Arts Center and the Pasadena Playhouse. From 2010-2012, Reed was back in familiar territory – the church. Fondly, he state

There was very light traffic as I passed McCormick Place onto South Lake Shore Drive. On the right side of the road, I noticed a newly-erected, simple square stone sculpture with the words "You Are Beautiful" engraved large enough for all passersby to read, even at 45-50 miles per hour.As the lake gleamed in the sunlight to my left, I passed the Museum of Science and Industry, the Jackson Park marina, and the 63rd Street beach house. I continued on, down the stately brick three-story townhouses along Jeffrey Boulevard. As I arrived at 79th Street, the streets were quiet, the shops were closed, many stores were boarded up, and many buildings looked like it had been a while since a store operated there.A short walk from the lakefront, the polygon-shaped brick structure which was my destination emerged on my left. A handful of people were scattered around this deceptively spacious auditorium when I walked in. On stage, six singers were running through their final rehearsals and sound checks.Midway through the event, the singers began a rendition of a song called “Total Praise” by Richard Smallwood. It is a song I have known for over 20 years, and it has been therapeutic for me at pivotal moments throughout my adult life.So it was fitting that on this Sunday morning, one day after I attended a memorial service for a close friend, concluding a week of grieving and reflection, that I found myself tearing up as the singers sang the song's chorus:As the choir ran through the series of melodic Amens in the song's bridge, I did not have it in me to lift my hands. I allowed tears to flow, and as the sun moved directly into the window over my head, I allowed myself to feel, and to heal. A few minutes later, an upbeat jazz saxophone solo completed my move from sadness to joy, in remembrance of my friend. The journey continues in the Chatham neighborhood on the south side, at the corner of 79th Street and Coles.Intro Theme Music: Victory Lap by QSTN ft. With the release of her third project, Juneteenth Revolution, Collette arrives, through intricate yet intimate songs of life, love, and liberation she solidifies her industry position as the talent to watch. Her first full-length pop, funk and soul album since her 2008 debut, Experience Collette, represents a high-watermark for a multi-instrumentalist singer who has worked tirelessly to achieve the evident growth in her craft, a polish to her live performances, and the rewards of hard-earned critical acclaim. It’s only fitting that the Juneteenth holiday, also known as Emancipation Day, is also Collette’s birthday. The title of Collette’s latest, greatest inspiration is born from the idea of people seizing the freedoms they already have, much like the American slaves of the antebellum South. Collette was born into a long bloodline of unconventional women trailblazing unique paths in music. After years of honing her own three-octave alto in the choir rafters and studying piano, baritone and alto saxophone, Collette was determined to give voice to the melodies and chords playing in her head. By the time the Howard U. grad took off for NYC, she knew exactly who she was and what she wanted: to claim her own Juneteenth freedoms from the city of dreams that never sleep. Writing and arranging her debut album following a romantic break-up, in 2008 Collette released her calling card, Experience Collette. She closed out her pre-Juneteenth run with CoCo By Request in 2010, an EP of covers including celebrated takes on Erykah Badu’s “Orange Moon” and Richard Smallwood’s “Angels,” that served as a love letter to fans who picked the songs Collette recorded and supported her Kickstarter campaign for the project Juneteenth Revolution.

Internationally acclaimed gospel music icon, Richard Smallwood drops in on Patrick D. McCoy, The African-American Voice in Classical Music to discuss his unique style of infusing classical themes into his celebrated gospel artistry.  Smallwood will also discuss his new recording, Promises, which will be available in June 21, 2011. About Richard Smallwood: Richard Smallwood is a legend in his own time. After four decades as one of the most popular inspirational artists in the music business, with classic tunes such as “Total Praise;” “Center of My Joy;” and “I Love the Lord” to his credit, the Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter and pianist continues to enjoy widespread popularity and influence. His songs have been recorded by Whitney Houston, Destiny’s Child, Kelly Price, Gerald Levert, American Idol’s Ruben Studdard, and a who’s who of the gospel world. Even the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, has recently recorded a Richard Smallwood tune, “Faithful,” on her latest CD. Recently, while standing before a recording studio full of hand-picked friends and music industry colleagues, gathered for an intimate live recording session of Smallwood’s new CD, PROMISES (Verity Gospel Music Group), he made a startling confession. “I had not written a song since my mom died in 2005,” he told the stunned audience. “I thought the gift I had dried up. I would try to write and nothing would come. I’d sit at the piano, I’d pray and there was nothing.”
