SummaryIn this episode, Brian and Chad interview Travis Dickinson about the argument from reason. They discuss the different options for explaining the existence of logical principles, focusing on naturalism and Platonism. Travis argues that if God does not exist, logical principles either do not exist or exist as brute abstract objects. He explains that naturalism, which denies the existence of anything outside the natural world, cannot account for the existence of logical principles. Platonism, on the other hand, posits the existence of abstract objects in a separate realm, but this explanation is ad hoc and lacks independent reasons. Travis concludes that the most plausible explanation for logical principles is the existence of God. In this part of the conversation, Brian and Travis discuss the argument from reason and its connection to the existence of God. They explore the idea that our ability to reason and use logic points to the existence of a higher mind, which they identify as God. They also discuss how the argument from reason can be used in practical apologetics to engage with skeptics and point them towards Christ.TakeawaysThe argument from reason posits that if God does not exist, logical principles either do not exist or exist as brute abstract objects.Naturalism, which denies the existence of anything outside the natural world, cannot account for the existence of logical principles.Platonism, which posits the existence of abstract objects in a separate realm, is an ad hoc explanation without independent reasons. The most plausible explanation for logical principles is the existence of God. Support The Becket Cook Show on Patreon! In today's episode, Becket chats with Dr. Travis Dickinson about his latest book, “Wandering Toward God: Finding Faith amid Doubts and Big Questions.” We look at doubt in the life of a Christian. Is it wrong to doubt? Many Christians assume that doubt is faith's opposite and that wandering among the hard questions of faith will lead us further and further away from God. True believers, the assumption goes, never waver in their confidence in the fundamental truths of the Christian faith. Professor and philosopher Travis Dickinson disagrees. Instead, he says, our doubts and hard questions about the faith are actually an important way we can express our commitment and love to God. Doubt isn't our destination but it's an important step on the way. It's possible to wander toward God as we ask our questions honestly, in faith and trust. As we do, we'll discover the truth, goodness, and beauty of God waiting for us. https://www.travisdickinson.com/ The Becket Cook Show Ep. 144This Episode of The Becket Cook Show is available on YouTubeJoin the Patreon! FrontStage BackStage with Jason Daye - Healthy Leadership for Life and Ministry
In a world of deconstruction, how do we handle our doubts in a healthy way as ministry leaders? In this week's conversation on FrontStage BackStage, host Jason Daye is joined by Dr. Travis Dickinson, professor of philosophy at Dallas Baptist University. Travis has literally traveled the world addressing big questions of faith, and he's the author of Wandering Toward God. Together, Travis and Jason look at the value of doubt in our faith journeys. Travis also provides some great insights for ministry leaders who might be wrestling with doubts, uncertainties, and questions themselves.Dig deeper into this conversation: Find the free Weekly Toolkit, including the Ministry Leaders Growth Guide, all resource links, and more at http://PastorServe.org/networkSome key takeaways from this conversation:Travis Dickinson on doubt and Christian faith: "Asking questions is a crucial part of Christian discipleship.... Doubts are consistent with faith. They're not opposites."Travis Dickinson on big questions of faith and deconstruction: "I'm really fine with the idea of deconstruction if it just means really thinking through what we believe and kind of breaking it down and seeing what we should believe and what we shouldn't. But I think the word deconstruction just too often means, you know, it's sort of one step away from de-converting, today.... I'm saying doubt is really important, and it's a value, but it's not a place to stay. It's not a good in itself.... But there's a lot of pastors and sort of online personalities that are celebrating doubt as if that's, in deconstruction, as if that's the place to end up. And I think that's just really misguided."Travis Dickinson on how ministry leadership and doubts: "That's really what it's about, is that [ministry leaders] would wrestle themselves with these questions, and then be able to lead others to truth."-------Looking to dig more deeply into this topic and conversation? "Wandering Toward God Finding Faith Among Doubts and Big Questions" with Travis Dickinson [Part 1]When it comes to doubting your faith, there are two extremes. One is to embrace and celebrate doubt as a virtuous and infallible foundation for epistemological bliss. The other extreme is that any form of doubt is sin and should not ever be entertained in the mind of a believer. But what does the Bible say? What about the doubts of John the Baptist, Thomas, and the disciples? Our guest this week and next, Professor of Philosophy at Dallas Baptist University Dr. Travis Dickinson, shares with us his insights and experiences with doubt in his new book Wandering Toward God - Finding Faith amid Doubts and Big Questions (uhop.me/Wandering). Travis helps doubters negotiate a wandering (but entirely biblical) path between the two extreme notions of doubt.Dr. Travis Dickinson (TravisDickinson.com) holds a Bible Certificate from the Wisconsin Campus of Cairn University, a Bachelor of Arts in Christian Education from Alaska Bible College, a Master of Arts in Christian Apologetics and Master of Arts in Philosophy of Religion and Ethics from Biola University. Doubt is an experience in every person's life—including the life of Christians. Yet, many of us are unwilling to acknowledge our doubts, or we are afraid of seeking help for our doubts because we fear that it reflects poorly on our faith. Therefore, too many believers will suppress their doubts with denial or eventually surrender to them in hopelessness. My guest on today's show argues that doubt is not necessarily bad. He says that it is a common experience to us all and that if we lean into it, then we might actually find our faith strengthened on the other side of doubt. His name is Travis Dickinson and we discussed his latest book Wandering Towards God: Finding Faith Amid Doubts and Big Questions. We worship a God who speaks. All that is contained in the heavens and earth has been created and is presently being sustained by the LOGOS, the Word of God, God made flesh, who existed in the beginning, even "before" the foundation of the world (Genesis 1; John 1; Colossians 1; Ephesians 1).The Lord Jesus spoke creation into existence. By His Spirit, He inspired the Bible to be written through the agency of men. And when He proclaimed His Good News in and around Jerusalem, His stories and parables displayed a dazzlingly simple but profound logic that not only encouraged the brokenhearted but silenced His fiercest critics. His teaching glistened brightly like the very stars He has created, numbered and named, fitting His wisdom into brilliant constellations of exhortation, rebuke, encouragement and hope.On part two of our conversation with Professor of Philosophy at Dallas Baptist University, Travis Dickinson, Travis unpacks the glorious brilliance of Jesus' timeless teaching and proclamation of Good News and reminds us that the life of the mind is a commandment; an essential part of Christian discipleship. Though we fall short of obeying any of the commandments, a pursuit of knowing more about God's love and mercy in light of our own sin can only serve to strengthen our faith and enable us to give reasonable and logical defense for the hope that is in us.Travis Dickinson is the author of three books with one more on the way. His most recent book, Logic and the Way of Jesus, discusses logic and critical thinking modeled in the life and ministry of Jesus. And his forthcoming book, Wandering Towards God: Finding Faith in Doubts and Big Questions (IVP, October 2022), argues that leaning into our questions and doubts can lead to even greater faith as we discover truth and knowledge. "What does Athens have to do with Jerusalem?" a church father from the ancient past once asked. In other words.... What does the intellectual life of the mind have to do with Gospel proclamation? Is it necessary for the believer in Christ to know intellectual arguments and defenses for the Christian faith? Do we really need to know logic and reason to be able to present the Gospel clearly to our unbelieving neighbors? Do we have to become scholars to be good witnesses for Christ? On this two-part episode of Apologetics Profile we sit down with Professor of Philosophy at Dallas Baptist University, Dr. Travis Dickinson, to discuss a few of these questions as well as his new book Logic and the Way of Jesus - Thinking Critically and Christianly (https://uhop.me/LogicJesus). Travis argues that though one need not become a scholar in order to love God with all of our minds, we are called to think logically and reasonably about our faith and not neglect the gift of the intellect with which God has equipped all of us. The life of the mind, Travis argues, is an important part of how we worship God and fulfill the Great Commision. On part one Travis talks about what he sees as a disconnect between Jesus and formal logic in contemporary evangelicalism and how important it is for us as believers to know both what God has made and what He has inspired to be written in order that we may properly love God and our neighbors.Travis Dickinson is the author of three books with one more on the way. His most recent book, Logic and the Way of Jesus, discusses logic and critical thinking modeled in the life and ministry of Jesus. Are you aware that less than 4 percent of Bible-believing Christians can provide a compelling case for the Christian faith? As a result, Christians are losing their influence in the culture and losing their minds. On today's podcast show, Jason talks with Dr. Travis Dickinson about the need to equip Christians with truth and logic, so they can give reasonable answers to those who challenge or question what they believe.

In this interview I will be speaking with Dr. Travis Dickinson about his recent book titled "Logic and the Way of Jesus" Support Us:
What happens when a cold-case detective applies his investigative skills to the New Testament Gospels? Find out as Timothy meets up with award-winning detective and bestselling apologetics author J. Warner Wallace. In addition to being a detective and apologist, Wallace is also a guitarist, bassist, and—Timothy is thrilled beyond words to discover—a fan of Steve Perry and Journey. With great difficulty, Timothy manages to restrain his adoration for Steve Perry just long enough to ask J. Warner Wallace a few questions about apologetics and the New Testament Gospels. In the second half of the podcast, Garrick and Timothy examine a band that was known at different times as Sigma 6, the Meggadeaths, and the Tea Set. Not surprisingly, the band never took off until they changed their name to Pink Floyd. "Another Brick in the Wall" is the musical focus for this week, but it's difficult for Garrick and Timothy to remain focused when talking about a band that once lost an inflatable pig that was roughly the size of a bus in the skies over London. In the end, however, the dynamic duo suppresses most of their attention deficits and manages to look at Pink Floyd's The Wall from the perspective of a biblical theology of guilt and shame. Also, Pig On the Lam would be a great name for a band. The first few minutes of the Toy Box Hero Tournament go completely off the rails as Garrick raises a grievance that forces Timothy to make a painful confession about the first episode of this season. In the end, however, your intrepid cohosts put their differences aside long enough to engage in a battle that forces a triad of testudines into mortal combat against Captain Marvel; in the end, the only thing that can possibly save the testudine triad is the hope that Carol Danvers might be an environmentalist. This Week’s Guest: J. Warner Wallace J. Warner Wallace is a cold-case homicide detective, popular national speaker, and best-selling author. Wallace became a Christ-follower at the age of thirty-five after investigating the claims of the New Testament gospels using his skill set as a detective. He continues to consult on cold-case investigations while serving as a Senior Fellow at the Colson Center for Christian Worldview. He is also an adjunct professor of apologetics at Talbot School of Theology (Biola University) and Southern Evangelical Seminary, and a faculty member at Summit Ministries. Mark Twain wrote ‘Faith is believing what you know ain’t so’. Travis Dickinson, co-author of ‘Stand Firm: Apologetics and the Brilliance of the Gospel’, says that both Christians and atheists often adopt a faulty definition of faith. It is less about beliefs, and more about ventured trust on the basis of evidence. He engages with Brian Blais, an atheist physicist, who recently published a paper on faith, probability and evidence, arguing that faith is a bad epistemology (way of knowing things). Later in the show Justin interviews ben Jacobs about Genexis, a series of talks at Coventry Cathedral from well known speakers on the big questions of life https://www.genexis.org/ For Unbelievable?
