What if the things you believed were helping you… were actually leading you away from truth? In this powerful episode of the Give A Heck Podcast, Dwight Heck sits down with Dr. Laurette Willis to explore a deeply personal journey from addiction, emotional struggle, and New Age practices… to faith in Jesus Christ, healing, and purpose-driven living. Dr. Laurette shares how early emotional pain led to unhealthy coping patterns, including emotional eating and addiction, and how her search for peace eventually led her into practices that appeared helpful on the surface… until they weren't. This is not just a story about recovery. It's about truth. It's about surrender. It's about transformation. If you've ever struggled with identity, searched for peace in the wrong places, or questioned whether what you're doing is truly helping you move forward… this conversation will challenge your perspective. In this episode, you'll discover: How emotional pain can lead to addiction and control patterns Why coping mechanisms can quietly become destructive habits The hidden risks behind certain New Age practices How faith became the foundation for real healing A Christian alternative to yoga and why it matters How to shift from searching externally to living with purpose internally This episode is a reminder that your past does not define your future… but your choices can redefine your path.
This Palm Sunday message confronts a powerful tension we all face: the gap between the world as it is and the world as it should be. Drawing from Hebrews chapter 2, we're reminded that while we don't yet see everything subjected to Christ, we do see Jesus—and that makes all the difference. The sermon challenges the common misconception that Christianity relieves all tension, when in reality, following Christ often intensifies it because God calls us to obedience that comes with consequences. Yet this isn't cause for despair. Instead, we're invited to shift our focus from overwhelming circumstances to the person of Jesus Christ Himself. Like Peter walking on water, we sink when we fixate on the waves around us, but we stand firm when our eyes remain on Christ. The message beautifully explores how Jesus, though transcendent and majestic, made Himself accessible by becoming fully human—not just to help us from a distance, but to experience everything we experience. He ingested death itself from the inside so He could overcome it completely. This isn't pie-in-the-sky religion; it's foundational truth that anchors us in present trouble while pointing us toward future glory. The holy hope of Christian life is simply this: when we don't see everything as it should be, we do see Jesus.Connect with First Baptist Starkville: https://bit.ly/3M4mHnkSubscribe to see our latest sermons: https://bit.ly/3DxRyjHSupport this ministry and our work in Starkville, MS: https://bit.ly/44muvW0

Dr. Joel Muddamalle reminded us that God's nearness isn't dependent on our awareness, and that the cross was where blessing moved through brokenness and back to blessing. This message calls us to place our hope in the crucifixion and resurrection, where Jesus redeems our brokenness and invites us to walk with Him in the fullness of His presence.

For centuries, supersessionist assumptions in higher education led generations of academics to assume that Jesus came to abolish the Mosaic Law. Today, a new generation of professors and researchers is producing rigorous, meticulously cited work arguing for a different perspective—that Jesus kept the Torah, valued the Torah, and instructed his disciples to keep the Torah and keep practicing Judaism. We're joined today by Dr. Logan Williams and Dr. Paul Sloan, who have recently inaugurated a podcast of their own, called Jesus and Jewish Law, where they demonstrate how their research has led them to this pro-Torah view of Jesus. — Takeaways — ► Jesus' relationship to the Torah is a complex issue with varied interpretations. The traditional view that Jesus came to abolish the law is being challenged by a new generation of scholars who argue that Jesus was Torah-observant. ► Studying ancient Jewish sources like the Mishnah and Tosefta is important to properly understand the legal and cultural debates in Jesus' time. Misunderstandings arise from a lack of familiarity with these sources and the nuances of Jewish law. ► A Torah-observant view of Jesus can have a transformative impact on Christian faith and practice. The Torah contains life-giving principles . They believe that understanding Jesus within his Jewish context can help to overcome negative stereotypes about Jewish law and enrich Christian spirituality. — Chapters — (00:00) Meet Our Guests (01:52) Diverse Perspectives in Academia on Jesus and Jewish Law (07:41) Jesus and Jewish Law Podcast Perspective Summary (16:36) Personal Journeys into Biblical Studies (30:36) Using Rabbinic Literature in Academic Contexts (39:58) New Testament as Jewish Literature (42:23) Healing on the Sabbath: Jesus' Perspective (44:51) Experiencing the Commandments as Life (01:03:36) Upcoming Books and Research — Resources — Jesus and Jewish Law Podcast on Apple Podcast Jesus and the Law of Moses: The Gospels and the Restoration of Israel within First-Century Judaism by Paul T.
