Many investors view non-technical founders as more risky. Sometimes this is plain silly, but there are legitimate investor concerns that non-techie founders will make costly mistakes that technical founders will not. The answer is not to learn to build the product with your bare hands, but to know enough about tech to have a product strategy and relate it to business goals.  Learning notes from this episode: “You can be the ripest juiciest peach in the world, and there's still going to be somebody who hates peaches,” - Dita von Teese. Some investors don't invest in non-technical founders and they never will. There are plenty of those who do. Spend your time on them. Learn how to connect product metrics to business metrics, for example how does user engagement relate to revenue or fundraising goals? Understand key tech concepts to make the right hires and set the right goals, but you do not have to retrain to become a coder yourself. Plenty of non-technical founders have raised millions and built successful tech businesses. You can hear them on this podcast. Learn from Alexandra Zubko, who has built a global SaaS business called Triptease with two other non-technical founders, and raised $28 million to date. Hear from Robyn Exton, a non-technical founder and Y Combinator alumna, who has built HER, a dating community for queer women.  Listen to Tech for Non-Techies episodes with non-technical founders who have built AI businesses, content platforms and marketplaces, and have been backed by VCs and angel investors.   If you want to buid a tech business, but don't have a technical background, then join Break Into Tech: Masterclass For Non-Technical Founders here.    Do you have a brilliant app idea and no tech knowledge to build it? In a hard-hitting interview, we explored:   DIVERSITY "Leaders should lead – even when it's difficult to do so" Diversity is one of the tough challenges business leaders are failing to tackle Putting a black square on your linkedin profile does not demonstrate you're dealing with diversity challenges! The “Unbiased Playbook” is a comprehensive diversity hiring playbook recently launched by the Revenue Collective The playbook suggests, for example, that you need to “pump prime it early on" to encourage people of diverse backgrounds to come and work for your business   CEO FAILINGS WITH SALES LEADERSHIP HIRING DECISIONS  Founders and CEOs are advised by VCs and "well-meaning but stupid books" that you should hire someone to lead revenue for 18 months then get rid of them When sales are not happening - as company leaders and investors expect - they focus on the symptom not the cause The underlying problem is typically product or positioning - firing your sales leader will not resolve this Few CEOs understand the differences between the tactical leadership you get with a VP Sales and the strategic leadership you get with a CRO - and when and why you should hire either profile     For more information on the Revenue Collective check out https://www.revenuecollective.com and for advice on recruiting exceptional leaders for B2B Saas startups and scaleups head over to https://alpinasearch.com

Learning notes from this episode:   As a non-technical founder, you don’t need a technical co-founder, but you do need a web of tech experts to advise you. Learning to admit that you don’t have all the answers is a far more useful skill for non-technical founders than learning to code. “Put those engineering books aside and make sure you’ve got the strength to be vulnerable. That’s the most important thing,” says Alexandra. Working with an outsourced product team can be a great way to build your business. Alexandra worked with Goody Labs at Triptease and recommends them. Nicole is seeing OTA's getting their fair share of bookings during the COVID-19 crisis. Charlie sees hotels falling into two buckets coming out of the crisis: 1. Opportunists - Never before have guests spent so much time on hotel websites, and never before has there been such a high risk of cancellations. 2. Cautious - Understandably freaked out with budget cuts, nervous about spending marketing dollars, so let the OTA market their hotel. While Andrew sees hotels struggling with the customer service from OTAs and Google along with a lack of in-house marketing budget and skill set. All three see maintaining a mix of channels is important. You hear it thrown around quite regularly this statement that sales is a numbers game; but how true is that, what is important to consider when conveying or believing in this statement? Numbers are what we use to measure success most of the time and place our own self belief and confidence in, but why? This was one of the key talking points on this week's episode, alongside; what kind of environment needs to be created to help sales people thrive and how sellers can become more aligned to the customer's needs.  To discuss this I'm joined by Bethany Ayers & Pete Crosby. They bring a wealth of insights, experience and stories from their career so far and raise some interesting angles on the topics above.  Bethany is Chief Customer Officer at artificial intelligence (AI) company Peak, one of the fastest-growing tech businesses in the UK. Before joining Peak, Bethany worked as an advisor to high growth startups such as Codility and Cloud IQ, primarily in the SaaS space. She has a superb track record leading tech businesses, with five years of experience as SVP Strategy at NewVoiceMedia where she oversaw strategy, sales operations and product marketing. She has also held strategic consulting roles with Mimecast and Getronics, and sales/strategy roles at both Computacenter and the Financial Times. Bethany acts as an expert advisor for Notion Capital and is a member of the London Revenue Collective. She regularly writes and speaks on topics including AI, SaaS metrics and women in tech. Pete is a 4x successful scale up sales leader, most recently as CRO at Ometria, who Deloitte placed in the Top 10 growth businesses in the UK with revenue acceleration above 3000%. Prior to Ometria, Pete ran revenues at Viadeo from Series A to IPO, and took Triptease from $2m to $10m ARR and a successful Series B in just 18 months. Pete is one of the 3 founding members of the London Revenue Collective, a private members club for senior revenue leaders which now has more than 200 paying members. He is also a non-exec sitting on the board of Kluster, a seed stage revenue analytics start-up which just closed a $1m round.

Human interaction can appear unrelated to processes and technology systems yet, they are in fact inextricably linked. I have been told previously in relation to fashion supply chains and transparency tools that ‘people are messy and you can’t make them conform’. However, I believe with the right tools, support and motivation people can enjoy working efficiently. If technology can make our lives and businesses more effective and profitable then, what’s not to love. Issues arise when technology has been created without a deep understanding of the complexities of why and how people carry out their work in a certain manner. For example, is tradition or culture driving a process, or is there no access or desire to use alternative machinery, electricity or the internet. No matter how good your real-time data-driven technology platform is, if there’s no internet it’s not going to work. Fortunately, Flora Davidson Co-founder of SupplyCompass, a transparent fashion sourcing platform, made sure she did her research before launching her business. Living in India for two years and spending time with people at all job levels in over 200 garment factories has givenFlora a unique insight into the way factories work. She understands the cause of any production issues and how to help solve those issues, not only for the factory but for the SME fashion brands they work with too. SupplyCompass act as a ‘matchmaker’ between factory and brand. Capability and longterm vision are taken into consideration before a match is created. This ensures the right factory is paired with the right brand to develop a great product and strong relationship. Both factory and brand work in a standardised and transparent way that cuts down miss-understandings and speeds up production. We have come to associate the term ‘fast’ in relation to fashion as negative. However, speed is not necessarily a bad thing. Speed can mean more efficient, better use of resources and fabrics resulting in less waste. And it can also mean that businesses make more profit. SupplyCompass aims to make sourcing faster, leaner and more responsible. Their product development (roadmap) is driven by problem-solving, rather than purely to innovate. They have built a product people genuinely want and will use. If we applied this approach to all fashion design - rather than creating collections then marketing and selling them to customers who up until now have not been involved in the design process - we’d see fewer returns and arguably a more sustainable fashion industry. Both quantitative and qualitative research has been key to the success of SupplyCompass. Flora’s research approach was honed whilst working at Flamingo, a global strategic insight consultancy, who ‘believe that culture is essential to understanding your business, your opportunities and your future, not only because it’s fascinating, but because it’s genuinely useful’. During her time at Flamingo, Flora worked for clients including Adidas, across Brazil, America and France. Being able to navigate the intricacies of people’s behaviour and turn those intricacies into a unified system, technology platform and business is forming a firm foundation for SupplyCompass’ future. Perhaps this is why Flora and Co-founder & CEO Augustus (Gus) Bartholomew have recently secured £1.5m in Venture Capital (VC) funding from Episode 1 Ventures, who have previously invested in Zoopla, Triptease and Shazam. Join us for this podcast where Flora and I talk about: Why strong relationships are at the heart of the SupplyCompass’ business and product development How Flora has built a business that supports transparency in fashion The future of Supply Compass and how they plan to use £1.5mil funding What will fashion sustainability look in 5 years time How Flora balances the pressures of being an entrepreneur, seeing friends and her wellbeing

He loves what he does, particularly learning something new everyday. In this podcast Simon describes why he set up a competitor to Amazon, what it's like to work for Jeff Bezos and how he transitioned into investing. Although he has experienced his share of failures, his eye for a successful start-up is remarkable.  Dr Simon Murdoch is Managing Partner of Episode 1 Ventures which runs two Enterprise Capital Funds investing c £100m in early stage software-driven businesses in the UK. Investments in Episode 1’s first fund include Aimbrain, Carwow, CloudNC, Emoov and Triptease. The second fund was launched recently and is looking for c 25 more companies to build from Seed to Series A and beyond. Simon is a highly experienced technology investor and has been an entrepreneur as well as a very active angel and venture capitalist. Previously, Simon was VP Europe of Amazon.com. He managed huge growth from start up in late 1996 through to multimillion turnover and hundreds of staff, ie from founding his own Internet bookselling company Bookpages in 1996, to acquisition by Amazon.com and launch of Amazon.co.uk in 1998, and its subsequent ultra-high growth. In this ultra-competitive hospitality industry, profitability is tough to maintain. Consumers have more research power than ever and have the tools and technology at their disposal to find the best available rate with ease. This, coupled with the ongoing battle between OTAs and hoteliers for the privilege of getting the booking and owning the guest, means that it’s a great time for hotels to get creative in maximizing their revenue. One of the simplest and most effective methods is in the age-old sales technique of upselling. From room upgrades, to additional services, and F&B, there are so many opportunities to upsell a guest and maximize your profit. FULL SHOW NOTES CAN BE FOUND AT: http://www.fueltravel.com/blog/fuel-hotel-marketing-podcast-episode-19-art-science-upselling-hotel-guest/ Focus on Enhancing Your Guest’s Experience, Don’t Be a Used Car Salesman. As travelers, we are primed to buy things. There are seldom times when our purse strings are more loose. Having said that, no one likes being sold to. It’s very important that you train your staff to approach upselling as a way to enhance the guest experience. The result of upselling is increased profit; however, the primary goal and focus should be on strengthening your relationship with the guest by enhancing their experience, Upselling should occur throughout the guest’s journey Don’t focus on just one specific time to upsell. Any time you have an interaction with a guest, over the phone, in person, or virtually via your website or an email, there’s an opportunity to upsell. Here’s why: Guests are often not aware of upgrade options, especially when the reservation was OTA or an business traveller’s assistant. Even if they book direct, perhaps, the phone reservationists may not have conveyed the upgrade options or their value The guest’s needs will constantly change Family vacationers, for example, may add people to their trip or may want to squeeze in an extra attraction before they leave. The travel lifecycle is full of micro-moments for decision making. Each time a guest is presented with a decision to spend money or not you may get a different answer. Their experience, their mood, the fact that they already paid perceive that they’ve paid for the stay, etc. All of these factors can influence their decision. Timing and Message Matter. Since the purpose of upselling is to improve the guest’s experience then it has a place throughout the entire research, purchase and consumption life cycle, but what you upsell depends greatly on when you upsell. === CONTEST: the first three hotels to email to erin.nemeth@triptease.com with subject line "I love direct bookings!" gets a free pass to attend The Direct Booking Summit!
