Progressive analysts George O'Connor and Ian Robertson catch up on small and mid-cap tech news. George has been looking at some resilient and upbeat news from smaller less well-known players SRT, Xaar and Microlise and is still recovering from the not too surprising news that Computacenter has not delivered its 20th year of earnings growth. Gamma results have encouraged Ian and whilst enthused by Judges Scientific as a company he is disappointed by the analyst meeting – where did all the research go? The leads to reflection on Ian's recent blog comparing listed company micro-cap funds and VC funds, which suggests that something has gone wrong with the small-cap due-diligence / investment decision ‘stack'. This has knock on impacts across small and mid-cap. Is more research the answer?

In this episode we talk to Bharti Lim, who is determined that young women should have as many opportunities to work - and claim senior roles - in tech. She says the reason girls often don't consider careers in tech is because they don't see women like them in the industry. She wants to change that, and joins me on the podcast to tell me how she thinks parents can help. 7:00 - Parents will be reassured to know that Bharti's teenage years weren't full of perfect moments, yet she still has a very successful career in tech. 10:00 - Growing up in an Asian family with first generation parents. Experiencing depression and self-harm as a teenager. 15:00 - Masking as a teenage girl with ADHD.19:00 - The value of counselling and psychotherapy to understand yourself and your feelings, particularly to undo unhealthy patterns adopted in teenage years. 27:00 - How to inspire more girls into tech. Some examples of jobs in tech, and why girls might be more tech-savvy than they realise. Why tech isn't a boy's job. 38:00 - How to encourage interest in tech, and why it's more glamorous than you think. Who is Bharti Lim? Bharti is a cyber security strategy manager at Computacenter, who run work experience days. She has worked in the cyber security industry for over 18 years, and has realised the importance of being visible, not only in the workplace, but for the next generation of young women in tech to see that there is no such thing as 'a man's job'. She is passionate about initiatives around diversity and inclusion, gender and ethnicity, and is an active advocate of change. Bharti was a finalist for the CRN Women in Channel Awards 2021 and a SHE awards winner in 2020.

I'm paraphrasing, but Trevor wants to know what we're seeing as the value of this middleman. Trevor said, "Being the middle man is tough and battling the big guys is tough. CDW's, SHI's of the world. The smaller guys have so much more to offer than a price. Price is dictated by the vendor anyways." What do the smaller VARs have to offer that the larger LARs can't offer? How do you go about discovering new security solutions How do we evaluate DevSecOps solutions? Mike hates the term, so I'll say how do we evaluate solutions that will improve the security of the DevOps pipeline? GigaOM Research has a report where they evaluate these solutions, but they also have another report that goes into detail on evaluation criteria. There is a lot of criteria such as seamless integration into tools, process, and dashboards, plus role-based access controls, automation driven by policy, management of secrets, and dependency analysis. What criteria do we look at? How does it change from company to company? And how do we supplement when a solution looks great, but misses a key criteria? "What's Worse?!" A question about DevSecOps. What’s the best way to handle this? Is cloud identity management going to stick? According to David Vellante over at Wikibon and The Cube, the pandemic has forced that shift for everyone and there's probably no turning back. For cloud-first companies this was business as usual before the pandemic. But what about all the new businesses that are going to the cloud and doing business with you. It's a very broad field and there are a lot of industry players, so actually skip the obvious stuff and just mention the items that have become sticking points or are still in need of development. Is this the best solution The "X" in XDR extends traditional endpoint detection and response or EDR to also include network and cloud sensors. We talked about this on our other podcast, Defense in Depth, and one of the issues came up was the disruptive nature of XDR. How much was real. David Thomas, Computacenter, said, "The aspiration to get fully integrated insights of all your tools and create the ultimate feedback loop responsive system is a worthy aim... Current vendor XDR pitches are up selling opportunities but customers have a challenge to adopt or shift to a single vendor platform due to a vast array of displace/replace challenges. It’s a great marketing story but the pragmatic reality is it’s a tough and long journey to realise the platform / single (pain) pane promise, unless you are a greenfield organisation." Is XDR a worthy goal and what is the marketing hype buyers should question?

In today's season finale Marc gets back in touch with the Group CEO of Computacenter Mike Norris. They catch up at the end of the lockdown (having originally spoken in April) to look at the state of the IT channel and the wider UK economy. Marc and Mike also look at the impact of the governments furlough scheme and what the 'bounce-back' might look like. Marc also discusses the famous Computacenter sales kick offs and the impact of the CC FMES jacket on helping to build a successful culture.
You hear it thrown around quite regularly this statement that sales is a numbers game; but how true is that, what is important to consider when conveying or believing in this statement? Numbers are what we use to measure success most of the time and place our own self belief and confidence in, but why? This was one of the key talking points on this week's episode, alongside; what kind of environment needs to be created to help sales people thrive and how sellers can become more aligned to the customer's needs. To discuss this I'm joined by Bethany Ayers & Pete Crosby. They bring a wealth of insights, experience and stories from their career so far and raise some interesting angles on the topics above. Bethany is Chief Customer Officer at artificial intelligence (AI) company Peak, one of the fastest-growing tech businesses in the UK. Before joining Peak, Bethany worked as an advisor to high growth startups such as Codility and Cloud IQ, primarily in the SaaS space. She has a superb track record leading tech businesses, with five years of experience as SVP Strategy at NewVoiceMedia where she oversaw strategy, sales operations and product marketing. She has also held strategic consulting roles with Mimecast and Getronics, and sales/strategy roles at both Computacenter and the Financial Times. Bethany acts as an expert advisor for Notion Capital and is a member of the London Revenue Collective. She regularly writes and speaks on topics including AI, SaaS metrics and women in tech. Pete is a 4x successful scale up sales leader, most recently as CRO at Ometria, who Deloitte placed in the Top 10 growth businesses in the UK with revenue acceleration above 3000%. Prior to Ometria, Pete ran revenues at Viadeo from Series A to IPO, and took Triptease from $2m to $10m ARR and a successful Series B in just 18 months. Pete is one of the 3 founding members of the London Revenue Collective, a private members club for senior revenue leaders which now has more than 200 paying members. He is also a non-exec sitting on the board of Kluster, a seed stage revenue analytics start-up which just closed a $1m round.

6000m2 van cremar, sobretot canyes i matolls.

The view from the top of business. Presented this week by Stephanie Flanders, The Bottom Line cuts through confusion, statistics and spin to present a clearer view of the business world, through discussion with people running leading and emerging companies. This week, Stephanie's top business guests hail from the worlds of retail, IT and pizza. They swap thoughts on the business of timing. Are modern businesses now so obsessed with doing things quickly that they fail to do it well? And as political turmoil continues in the Middle East, the panel debate whether it's important for businesses to keep up with what's happening around the world. How isolated from current events can they be? Stephanie is joined in the studio by David Wild, chief executive of car accessories company Halfords; Mike Norris, chief executive of IT services firm Computacenter; Chris Moore, chief executive of Domino's Pizza UK & Ireland. Producer: Ben Crighton.
