It seems to me just another reason to vaccinate people working in hospitality as soon as possible. After months of beta testing, Google eventually added organic links to its metasearch product. Giulia Eremita Coordinamento Digital Strategy BTO 2020Alessio Carciofi CEO Digital DetoxSimone Puorto Founder, CEO & Futurist Travel SingularitySéverine Obertelli Lifestyle Coaching and Travel Consultancy

This was supposed to be my 5-minute-keynote at #ITB2020, revolving around the analogies between the myth of Prometheus, Friedrich Nietzsche, and #artificialintelligence. It would have been my first time as a speaker at the German event; I was so excited that I've spent weeks tweaking the speech, rewriting it and rehearsing it. We all know what happened, and even though it's not up to me to judge the decision to cancel the event, yet, I cannot help but feel a little sad about the whole thing. I feel particularly sorry for the hard work that Daniel Zelling and Anja Bredemeier put in organizing what was likely to be an amazing panel with amazing people: David Turnbull (techtalk travel), Ian Di Tullio (Accor), Stefan Matthiessen (Koncept Hotels), and Christian Schwarz Lausten (Airbnb). Focus on Coronavirus:Over 5% of Italian GDP comes from tourism and this panic is not helping. First, if you're immune system is good, you're likely not going to die. Victims in Italy were all in their '80s or '90s or, when younger, people with pre-existing conditions (such as the 62-year-old man who died was on dialysis). Moreover: 400 proven cases for 60M Italians. That is 0.0006% of incidence. If we look at the death rate, that's 0.000016%. The odds of being struck by lightning are 0.03%. That's 2,000 times more likely to die from coronavirus in Italy.Expedia is about to fire 2,900 of their 24,000 full-time employees (approx 12% of the company's workforce), to cut $300–500M costs by the end of 2020. Here's an extract from the Expedia email to its team:"Team Expedia Group, Following our disappointing 2019 business performance and our change in senior-most management, the Travel Leadership Team has spent the last few months determining a better way forward. (…) Our company needed a fresh and forward look at clarifying our strategy and simplifying our operations (…) We have been pursuing growth in an unhealthy and undisciplined way. (…) We will exert more discipline in setting priorities and allocating resources (…) Today, we are announcing our intent to reduce and eliminate certain projects, activities, teams, and roles to streamline and focus our organization.GSD Group and True North partnered with Atari to open game-themed hotels across the US. My idea, back then, was to combine the experience and the integrations we had by partnering with an AI company to increase the returns of our clients’ campaigns. It never happened (at least, up until I stayed in the agency). Still, I am happy to see that two of my favorite companies out there are doing precisely that: Mirai and TripTease signed a partnership, with the first offering a powerful IBE and the second adding a machine learning layer on top of the campaigns. Results? Over a three-month trial period, on average, conversion rates increased by 22%, and ROAS improved by 41% on average. Digital #10Unexpectedly, Trivago integrated Google Hotel Ads in trivago Business Studio. “Now,” according to the German metasearch company, “you can create a Google Hotel Ads campaign without leaving your Business Studio. (…) It runs on the CPA model, so you can advertise to a wider global audience with no extra risk.”Digital #9By a similarly odd move, Tripadvisor launched Review Hub, the new reputation management tool, giving restaurant owners and managers the ability to respond to reviews not only on Tripadvisor, but on Google, Facebook, TheFork, Yelp and, More, All from One Easy-to-Use Platform. You can take a peak at the platform here.Digital#8Mother is “one of the world’s most respected, independent creative companies” in the world, and, if you’re into design, you’ve probably heard of them. Their last work was the revamp of the Tripadvisor logo. “The redesigned logo,” Associate Editor of Creative Bloq, Ruth Hamilton, wrote “keeps the essence of Ollie (Tripadvisor owl mascotte) but given him a minimalist makeover. The new Tripadvisor logo has a simpler, monochrome design that’s much more flexible for use in different contexts.” The rebrand incorporates a new custom type font (Trip Sans), a new color palette, and the “a” in the name is no longer in capitals.Digital#7But will a logo revamp be enough to save Tripadvisor? As the company celebrates its 20th birthday, it may be facing way bigger issues. Just to name one: Viator. The company was acquired six years ago for $200M, and it is now officially operating independently from Tripadvisor Experiences. Experiences President, Dermot Halpin (obviously) left the company and will only stay in Q1 with the role of advisor. Viator Founder, Rod Cuthbert, enjoyed an I told you so moment, by saying that, “back in 2017,” he already talked “about the mistake I felt Trip was making in shifting emphasis away from Viator, the established leader in tours and activities, to Tripadvisor Experiences.” Based on the announcement, he was totally right.Digital#6But it gets worse: according to rumors, Tripadvisor may be making cuts for something around $60M and $80M. First one to go? CFO and President for APAC, Gary Fritz, leaving in Q2.Digital#5Changes in the Experience unit for Airbnb as well: the company hired Catherine Powell, former Walt Disney theme park president. That’s not the first time Disney exects get into the travel space: last May, Tripadvisor appointed Kanika Soni, former SVP, global e-commerce of the Consumer Products Division Disney, as President of the Company’s Hotels Business Unit.Digital#4After 11 years as LinkedIn CEO, Jeff Weiner is now stepping down. Digital #10Australian court found Trivago guilty of misleading its users by not showing the cheapest hotel deals, but the ones on which advertisers bid the most. Federal Court Justice, Mark Moshinsky, stated that Trivago “did not provide an impartial, objective and transparent price comparison service, (and) the fact that Trivago was being paid by the online booking sites was not made clear.” The company was also found guilty of misleading users by comparing different room types, creating a false impression of savings.Digital #9As already speculated on an old Digital., Thomas Cook could be relaunched as an OTA as early as this summer (June, according to rumors) by Fosun, the current owner of the oldest travel firm’s brand. That being said, Thomas Cook’s customers are still waiting to get refunded for the canceled vacations…Digital #8During ITB2020, Protel will release the new version of AIR, “industry’s first and only PMS to include built-in voice capabilities for hotel employees.” Digital #7, 6 & 5Google I/O 2020 has, finally, a date and a location: May 12th — 14th, at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View. The event was promoted by a cool puzzle, that you can try to solve here. On different news, Google’ SERP redesign (check out the previous edition of Digital.) backlashed: many users (including yours truly) complained about the fact that the new design blurred the line between paid and natural results, making ads look more like organic search results. A Google spokesman minimized, by saying that the new SERP mirrors “the design that we’ve had for many months on mobile.” Still on Google: according to CEO, Sundar Pichai, artificial intelligence (if unregulated) could be used for “mass surveillance”, or to “violate human rights.” The Financial Times published an interview with Pichai, who highlighted how regulations should “take a proportionate approach, balancing potential harms, especially in high-risk areas, with social opportunities.” Google, according to Pichai, “wants to be a helpful and engaged partner to regulators as they grapple with the inevitable tensions and trade-offs. We offer our expertise, experience, and tools as we navigate these issues together.”Digital #4According to a recent Sojern survey, 60% of independent hoteliers consider increasing direct bookings their number one challenge. It is. The new SERP features favicons, blurring the line between paid and organic results even more. Organic results now feature a small logo next to the URL, while paid ads feature a bolded black ad label. The change is not unexpected: I’ve already discussed this change back in May. At the time, the new design only affected mobile search, but it was quite obvious that desktop was next.Digital #6Yet another funding round for SiteMinder: the unstoppable channel manager raised $70M. Digital #10Do you remember Black Mirror’s Nosedive episode? We’re a step closer to it. After a £2.5M listing has been rented to organize a rave party, Airbnb has developed software that can analyze guests’ online personas to calculate the chances of them trashing apartments. The software scans for traits such as “neuroticism,” involvement in crimes,” “narcissism,” “psychopathy,” and -poetically enough, “Machiavellianism…”Digital.#9MakeMyTrip, added destination videos (covering 130 destinations) to its mobile app to inspire travelers. Check out my interview with Cristina Hernández Santonja, Business Development & Strategic at BeonPrice, here.Digital.#6Remember Joe Dante’s classic, Innerspace? Now it’s a reality! Xenobots are “entirely new life-forms,” created from frogs’ stem cells. They’re so small that they can be injected in the human body. Researcher Joshua Bongard stated that xenobots are “neither a traditional robot nor a known species of animal. It’s a new class of artifact: a living, programmable organism.” Xenobots can be used to clean up radioactive waste, get plastic out of the oceans, and — of course- transport medication inside human bodies. Xenobots can live over a week without external nutrients, but their lifespan can increase to several weeks in the right environment.Digital.#5Hyatt Hotels partnered with meditation app Headspace, offering mindfulness exercises to both guests, employees, and corporate customers. Here are a few takeaways: “Google Travel (…) was launched last year. It remains a breakthrough move for the company in this market. (…) Google Travel allows the company to deliver personalized travel experience to users, (…) the search giant is banking on integration of AI into its travel tools. (…) All the above mentioned strong endeavors by Google are likely to hurt the sentiments of the online travel agencies (OTA) further.” You can read the full article here.Digital.#1Born as a personal project, Bespoke became a product that is now used by millions of travelers. Digital #10Booking.com abandons scarcity marketing: from June 2020 (the latest), the OTA will have to stop showing messages such as “only one room like this left,” “other persons showed interest in this hotel in the last 24 hours”, “the room is popular,” or “time-limited offer”. The European Commission and National Consumer Protection, in fact, identified these techniques as “manipulative”.Digital #9Meanwhile, in Russia, the Federal Anti-monopoly Service found Booking.com to be in breach of Russian anti-monopoly laws (a crime punishable with fines from 1% to 15% of the revenue generated in the Country). Kalanick sold all of his stocks in Uber, and he has now, officially, nothing tying him up to the carsharing app. The market, according to the stock, didn’t seem to care.Digital #7Google confirmed a local search algorithm update. The startup offers in-chat flight deals on, amongst others, WhatsApp, Telegram, and Slack. CEO and co-Founder, Edmundas Balčikonis, (unsurprisingly) played the super-app card: “We want to expand into other products (…) into tours and activities, expand into travel insurance and other categories.”Digital #5OYO will fire 2,000 employees by the end of the month. The company is known for his inclination to automatize processes whenever possible, so this may not necessarily be a bad omen. More alarming, however, is another rumor: owners are complaining that they are not being paid by the Indian unicorn, with due invoices dating as far as May 2019…Digital #4The Information Commissioner’s Office stated that Marriott had “agreed to an extension of the regulatory process” (for the infamous Starwood data breach) “until 31 March 2020,” and there is speculation the original $123M fine will be drastically reduced.Digital #3According to Skift, U.S. hotels increased National TV ad investments by a striking 32%, with Marriott alone increasing its spend by over $50M. Is this part of the design to be less Google-dependent? With Hilton putting $103M in the old school media, and Marriott echoing with $90M, the question is legitimate. When it comes to predicting the future, however, I tend to trust airlines better than hotels: and, in 2019, they cut TV investments by 47%…Digital #2According to Lindy Andersen, director of global accounts at Expedia Group, artificial intelligence can “alleviate stressors and drive better efficiencies of our entire platform.” The statement was given during a recent EyeForTravel webinar titled Customer experience lab: automation, partnerships and the human touch. The system was trained by data coming from thousands of mammograms. On the more sci-fi side of the spectrum, Samsung unveiled its artificial humans (or glorified video chatbots, to be more realistic), called Neons.

On the more sci-fi side of the spectrum, Samsung unveiled its artificial humans (or glorified video chatbots, to be more realistic), called Neons. “Neons are not AI assistants,” Pranav Mistry, Neon CEO, and head of STAR Labs stated. “Neons are more like us, an independent but virtual living being, who can show emotions and learn from experiences(…) They can act as teachers, financial advisers, health care providers, concierges, actors, spokespeople or TV anchors (…) There are millions of species on our planet, and we hope to add one more,” said in a press release. “Neons will be our friends, collaborators, and companions, continually learning, evolving, and forming memories from their interactions.”
