By serving as his father's road buddy, Adam Harris got significant exposure to the value of travel from an early age. Through traveling to over 60 countries, Adam found that some of the best hotel properties were smaller and off the beaten path. Many of these hotels were ill-equipped to compete with the larger hotel chains in the area, a big reason being that there was a large technological gap between the big players and the independent hotels.    In short, the incumbents did not have much interest in sharing their proprietary software with boutique hotels and decided to use this as a competitive moat. Realizing this, Adam Harris decided to found Cloudbeds, which is a company that provides independent lodging businesses everything they need to run their business more effectively. Today, Cloudbeds powers 2.5 million beds across over 150 countries and is now considered to be one of the biggest players in the hospitality technology space.    Adam joins Scott Britton and Andrei Newman on the Built By Humans podcast as they discuss how to create highly effective teams, the importance of communication, making acquisitions, and the future of travel. Here are some key takeaways from the conversation: A strong team usually has the following 3 people: an operator, a strategist, and a visionary.  Having the most senior person on a team be the first round of the interview process is an effective way to drive alignment from the start and show the candidate that you are serious about them.  Hire people who are driven by passion and interest rather than financial incentives.  It's okay to be wrong. Just be sure to make a strong bet on your new hypothesis rather than trying to hold onto something that you know is flawed (strong convictions, loosely held).

Sebastien is the Vice President of Partnerships at Cloudbeds, an all-in-one hospitality management software platform. A question I've been wrestling with lately is “can you provide luxury level service if hotels are moving to more self-directed experiences?”. We try to uncover the answer on this episode. The pandemic has brought many challenges to the industry but something no one saw coming was how making everything contactless in the name of health and safety actually trained people to become more self-sufficient at almost any service interaction through the use of their phones.  On-demand and personalized service delivery has been both the mantra and challenge for hotel companies for years now but, as guests expect more online and mobile services to be made available, we may now be seeing one of the biggest shifts in technology adoption that the hospitality industry has seen in decades.  Not to mention how the evolution of job functions and staffing affect recruitment and retention of a younger workforce who demand best-in-class and ease-of-use for any tool they're charged with using on a daily basis. This is a fascinating space that deserves attention. About SebastienSébastien Leitner, Vice President of Partnerships at Cloudbeds, leads global partnerships and industry relations for the company. Prior to Cloudbeds, Sébastien worked at Expedia in various roles managing lodging connectivity for independent and chain hotels as well as vacation rentals. After studying Hotel Management and Business Administration in Germany, Sébastien started his career in hospitality working for Le Meridien Hotels and Swissotel in various European capitals.

You no longer can have food services, coffee services, water service, whatever. ... We used to have snacks everywhere and food and beer on tap. ...This was about having fun at work and bringing out the child in us a little bit and not just being always adult time. That has kind of gone to waste. It's sad. And I don't know how long we'll be here like that. But at some point, this will return to normal and we'll get back to that old way." Cloudbeds is a Purpose-Driven Company — "It's making making people feel engaged. They have a purpose. And we've tried to create a workplace where when they get up in the morning to have a purpose to come to work, they feel like they're changing travel. They're changing the world. They're doing something for people that love to travel and hotels and hosts all over the world." Living in Remote Work Culture — "We have a rule if not everyone is in the same physical room, you can't have someone call in remote and put them on on a TV screen. Everyone has to be in the room or everyone has to be on Zoom remote. ... we're building a remote culture. So the office culture is a secondary culture to the remote culture which comes first." Managing a Global Workforce — "Cloudbeds, it's the embodiment of globalization. I mean, we really are. This was before COVID in 2012. I was in Brazil. Adam was in the U.S. We had to learn to be in an office. It wasn't natural for us. Even before Cloudbeds we didn't have an office. We worked together for years. I think it's taking that to the next level." Using Slack for Restaurants — "For me, Slack is just an asynchronous communication hub. It gives you the ability to share information. It gives people the ability to get real-time help. It allows you to connect docs. It allows you to connect video. Whatever it is, it's just a hub.

The COVID-19 crisis is far from over. How long the crisis remains is still an unknown. As many states are taking steps to reopen their marketplaces, government leaders and business owners may want to look to the hotel industry for some best practices. While nearly 20 percent of the nation's 57,000 hotels have closed, according to reports, the rest have remained open throughout the pandemic. Despite that, owners and operators know life will never go back to way it was before the crisis. Never before has innovative thought mattered more than during the current coronavirus pandemic. In this episode of Lodging Leaders podcast, we talk to Mitch Patel, CEO of Vision Hospitality Group, which kept its 40-some hotels open and is trying to figure out what the hospitality business will look like in the coming months and years. We also talk to John Hardy, CEO of The Hardy Group, a hotel development consulting company with offices all over the world. Cloudbeds co-founder Adam Harris lost sleep so you could sleep better. When you hear the name “Cloudbeds” you’re more likely to think of a Tempur-Pedic competitor than a tech startup. More so, when you think tech startup, you’re probably more likely to think Silicon Valley than San Diego. Well, think again. Stopping by the Behind the Smoke podcast (now called Digital Hospitality) to talk with hosts Shawn Walchef and Derek Marso, Cloudbeds co-founder Adam Harris and his team are changing the narrative of the tech industry and the hospitality space in Southern California through the click of your smartphone. Like most startups, it all began with a light bulb moment. “We started the idea of Cloudbeds in my condo back in 2012,” recalls Adam. “We had the idea to professionalize small independent hospitality. We've all stayed in a bed and breakfast and boutique hotels are my favorite place to stay. Still, a lot of times small business owners don't have the right tools to help them reach new guests. So, somewhere along the lines we were like, ‘Let's build a platform.’” That platform of course is Cloudbeds. While the tech startup space is often sold as fast and sleek, Adam and his team decided to seduce a more dated space. His approach? “Let's go into the most unsexy industry that hasn't changed in 25 years,” laughs Adam. “Let’s build something from the ground up so that we give these tools to, in spirit, make the world a little bit more welcome place.” That is exactly what Adam and his team did: offer improved resources to the boutique hotel and bed and breakfast industry for better digital hospitality. So, at this point, you know who started Cloudbeds, why it was started and where it was founded. But just exactly what does Cloudbeds do? We’ll let Adam handle that. “Cloudbeds is a connector into all the point of sales that we commonly use,” explains Adam. “AirBnB, HomeAway, Booking.com, Expedia, things like that. So, it doesn't matter where the guest is shopping, we're reaching real time inventory. Just like Amazon makes it easy to buy products anywhere in the world with the click of a button, we did the same thing on the hotel side. We've got about 202 employees and as of today, we’re in 31 countries around the world.” The Amazon of finding a place to stay in 31 different countries? Maybe the idea was a little sexier than Adam gave it credit for. As alluded, the reach of Cloudbeds has made the company and its clientele international. As expected, this all came from investing in their staff. “We're very focused on our employee,” Adam notes. “We love our staff. We invest in our staff because our formula is people first, customers second, business third. We take care of our employee. We invest in them. We give them the accountability, responsibility and empowerment to do well. They're going to take care of the customer naturally, and if they take care of the customer, they're going to take care of the business.” Taking care of business is exactly what the Cloudbeds team does. Serving an international consumer requires the Cloudbeds staff to dive deep into the cultural norms and values of each area they serve around the world. “We have 31 countries,” begins Adam. “That's a lot of people. We think about the diversity of all those individuals and the cultural differences. We've had to retrain ourselves and our thought because we want that diversity -- that's what makes us special. It's really grounded us as individuals to be more inclusive and also have more of a global mindset.” Going global did not happen overnight and it did not happen alone. While Adam has turned Cloudbeds into a large-scale operation with over 200 employees and international reach, it was built like any startup you see today. First with an idea and then with funding. “Over a year, we raised $1 Million,” Adam says on early funding. “That’s a meaningful amount of money.”
