Dominic emphasises the importance Venture Capital (VC) has had in the UK over the last 10 years: $150 billion VC money has gone into startups generating upwards of a $billion in value which becomes £2 trillion in wealth, which meaning around a third of all wealth in the last decade has come from VC as a source. However, this is concentrated in London and the South East. Dominic believes it in the next decade we will see a more even spread across the UK leading to an opportunity for wealth creation and economic models. The discussion also touches on how VCs can have a critical role in regions, while still generating returns.

Als Early-Stage-Investor liegt der Fokus auf den frühen Entwicklungsphasen von Technologieunternehmen und umfasst software- und hardwarebasierte Geschäftsmodelle. Der Kapitalgeber beginnt mit Anfangsinvestitionen zwischen 1 und 4 Millionen Euro. Inklusive in Folgefinanzierungsrunden können über 10 Millionen Euro pro Portfoliounternehmen investiert werden. Aus der Industrie konnten mit ZF Ventures, ZEISS Ventures und Montan-Ventures-Saar bereits namhafte technologieorientierte Partner gewonnen werden. Auch in diesem Fonds konnte das Team auf sein starkes Netzwerk bauen und zusätzliche Kapitalzusagen von erfahrenen Industrie-Managern und Unternehmerinnen sowie Unternehmern erzielen. Tim recently read that, "1 in 10 AI (Artificial Intelligence) engineers think that AI will be the downfall of our civilization." But, it's not all doom-and-gloom; he's also been reading about some exciting advances in AI and Machine Learning (ML) such as Amazon Alexa being able to come up with novel bedtime stories for kids, Cosplay stars trying out new outfits using personalized "generative art", and complex software modules being created from simple prompts.It seems that AI/ML is advancing at a breakneck speed, leveraging a rich Venture Capital (VC) space driven by a "move fast and break things" mentality. This can be really effective at creating change; but, we're also seeing lots of AI models becoming so big and so complex that no one really understand how they work. Andrea ha un percorso ricchissimo: ha partecipato alla nascita del Venture Capital in Italia ed alla fondazione di due delle società pioniere del tech italiano, Buongiorno Vitaminic e Banzai Media, di cui avete già sentito parlare sul podcast. Ne abbiamo approfittato per fargli tantissime domande su quello che vede nel mercato VC in Italia. Andrea ci racconta cosa cerca un investitore in una startup e ci spiega quali sono i settori e i business model più interessanti su cui puntare, ma ci ricorda anche tutti gli errori più comuni e i sacrifici che deve fare ogni founder. Andrea nasce a Biella nel 1970 e la massima aspirazione di sua mamma è vederlo lavorare in un'azienda tessile della zona. Andrea invece inizia la sua carriera da Olivetti all'alba della rivoluzione digitale e lavorerà anche con Elserino Piol, considerato il padre del VC in Italia, e Oliver Novick, che ha curato l'area innovazione dell'intero Gruppo Olivetti. Da lì Andrea partecipa al lancio del primo fondo italiano di Venture Capital, Kiwi 1: guidando gli investimenti del fondo in Yoox, Venere e Vitaminic, la prima piattaforma italiana di musica online, che ha anche co-fondato. Dopo aver lavorato con Carlo De Benedetti e preso un anno sabbatico per girare il mondo. Nel 2004 Andrea co-fonda Banzai Media (quotata in Borsa a Milano nel 2015), dove è stato Co-CEO della società fino al 2010. Rand Fishkin is CEO & co-founder of SparkToro, author of Lost and Founder: A Painfully Honest Field Guide to the Startup World, and previously co-founded and ran Moz. Nail those three, and you’ll do great marketing.” Rand Fishkin   Worst investment ever Time to grow business funds Rand’s worst investment ever happened when he was the CEO of Moz. In 2011, the company turned down an acquisition offer from HubSpot, a very well known marketing platform. At the time, Moz had been growing at 100% year-on-year for about six years in a row and producing about $11 million in revenue. In 2012, Moz sought to increase funding and got $18 million, of which $15 million came from a new investor, Foundry group, and $3 million of it came from a previous investor Ignition Partners. Venturing into more forms of marketing Rand’s company used the Venture Capital (VC) funding ostensibly to grow the business from just providing search engine optimization tools and software to providing different aspects of web marketing, email marketing, content marketing, PR, and social media marketing. Essentially, all of the new forms of marketing that Moz had not served previously. Cutting off what was working Over the next few years, the company cut off all growth of its software platform. As a result, existing products stopped improving and staggered. While their competitors kept making investments, Rand was pouring all of his new money into hiring a huge team, trying to figure out the new management structures, growing his offices, and acquiring other companies. Rand thought that by putting on hold what was previously working and putting all his energy into launching his new idea, the new venture would propel Moz into superstardom with this exciting and incredibly broad software suite. The horrific failure The new venture fell flat on Rand’s face. Moz’s growth rate fell from 100% year-on-year to 50% and then from 50% to 25%. Over the years, Moz continued to plateau in terms of growth and was surpassed by two direct competitors – SEMrush and Ahrefs. Over the last few years, Moz has tried to recover and refocused on SEO after a big round of layoffs in 2016. Stepping aside While the company was still profitable, the failure put a massive strain on the company and Rand. He was not able to handle it well and had an emotional breakdown. Rand ended up stepping down from the company, replacing himself with the chief operating officer who’s still the CEO today at Moz. The myth that leads even the best of us to failure Rand’s biggest driver to his failure was believing in the myth that once you have invested, made a decision, and gone down a path, you have to keep pursuing that path until you see it through to determine whether it was the right decision or the wrong decision. In reality, the right thing to do is to release one small thing that puts you in this direction and see if that works. And then another little thing in the same direction and if it also works launch another. Don’t do anything big until you’ve released a small series of things and validate that your market wants this. Lessons learned Have structure and incentives in place Structure and incentives matter more than almost everything else when it comes to business success. Know what you’re signing up for before accepting venture capital VC financing comes with a lot of glitz and glamor, and you get a lot of media attention. Don’t fall into the trap of chasing the glamor at the expense of serving your customers, your employees, and your happiness. Find the in-between financing model Today, there are financing models in between being wholly bootstrapped trying to build a business with your own or your family’s funds and building a business with institutional investor capital. Don’t be afraid to explore such models. Andrew’s takeaways You can’t do everything Don’t be addicted to growth, and try to do everything. Things seem easier on paper than they are. Companies just can’t do everything. The startup world is a trap Small businesses are trapped. So be very careful when you go in. You can have all the dreams that you want, have a billion-dollar company, but for the majority of people, it’s pain and despair. Leave risk management to the board As the CEO, your job is growing the business while that of the board is reducing risk. When a board gets caught up in growth, they betray their obligation to the bigger world. Let the CEO in the management team propose the growth plan while the board handles the risks. All board members should, therefore, understand the role of risk assessment and risk management. Do not let investors push you Listen to different opinions, but do what’s right for you. Do not be dragged into hitting quarterly profit numbers and all that. Don’t be the CEO who spends time building a competitive advantage and chasing your tail because investors are pushing you. Actionable advice When looking for business financing, be sure to recognize what you’re signing up for and commit wholeheartedly to one path. So if venture capital appeals to you, just understand why to make sure it’s the best choice for your business. No. 1 goal for the next 12 months Rand’s number one goal for the next 12 months is profitability. SparkToro just launched, and so Rand’s main focus right now is trying to get it to a profitable, sustainable business. Understanding how the venture capital investment model works can help entrepreneurs develop their business strategy and negotiate the price and terms of an investment. Venture Capital (VC) investing is a portfolio game – you don’t just make one good deal. Rather, VC firms invest in several companies to spread out the risk. They know that eight or nine out of 10 investments will fail or bump along and return no real gain, while one or two might be a success. Let’s say we launch a small, $100 million venture fund, as an example. To cover overheads and some profit, and to meet the investment targets of our fund’s investors, we need a 20% compounded return. Let’s say we have a five-year time horizon on the fund.To meet the required 20% compounded return, our fund needs to return cash of approximately $250 million in five years. If the horizon is seven years, the return would need to be approximately $360 million. What does this mean for our fund’s portfolio? Let’s say our fund invests its $100 million by making 10 equal investments of $10 million. Because we know that only two investments are going to generate our returns, and eight will not, we therefore need to generate $125 million of cash from each of the two successful investments. That’s 12.5 times our money in five years. In seven years, we need 18 times our money.VCs typically need to target 10 to 30 times their money on an investment for their model to work and they choose their portfolio companies with this outcome in mind. For the entrepreneur looking for funding, this knowledge will impact your business strategy. Your business plan needs to speak to these returns and it must incorporate how and when you are going to exit, what valuation metrics are used in your industry and what multiples are reasonable.How does this VC knowledge apply to the valuation discussion with a VC? How much company ownership will the entrepreneur give up for a $10 million investment?Let’s assume that your business plan projects $125 million in revenue in 5 years and your industry standard exit multiple is 2x revenue. These figures amount to a $250 million valuation in five years. Remember that our VC fund is looking at a 12.5x return on its invested cash.Here’s an easy formula: Post money valuation = Exit Value / Return on Investment (expressed as a multiple)So, in our example: ($125 million in revenue x 2) / 12.5 = $20 million post money valuationMeaning, before the $10 million investment, your business is worth $10 million. And since the entrepreneur and VC are contributing $10.0 million each, the VC will require a 50% stake in the business.Note that this analysis entirely skips further capital requirements, further dilution and capital structure engineering. I have been told previously in relation to fashion supply chains and transparency tools that ‘people are messy and you can’t make them conform’. However, I believe with the right tools, support and motivation people can enjoy working efficiently. If technology can make our lives and businesses more effective and profitable then, what’s not to love. Issues arise when technology has been created without a deep understanding of the complexities of why and how people carry out their work in a certain manner. For example, is tradition or culture driving a process, or is there no access or desire to use alternative machinery, electricity or the internet. No matter how good your real-time data-driven technology platform is, if there’s no internet it’s not going to work. Fortunately, Flora Davidson Co-founder of SupplyCompass, a transparent fashion sourcing platform, made sure she did her research before launching her business. Living in India for two years and spending time with people at all job levels in over 200 garment factories has givenFlora a unique insight into the way factories work. She understands the cause of any production issues and how to help solve those issues, not only for the factory but for the SME fashion brands they work with too. SupplyCompass act as a ‘matchmaker’ between factory and brand. Capability and longterm vision are taken into consideration before a match is created. This ensures the right factory is paired with the right brand to develop a great product and strong relationship. Both factory and brand work in a standardised and transparent way that cuts down miss-understandings and speeds up production. We have come to associate the term ‘fast’ in relation to fashion as negative. However, speed is not necessarily a bad thing. Speed can mean more efficient, better use of resources and fabrics resulting in less waste. And it can also mean that businesses make more profit. SupplyCompass aims to make sourcing faster, leaner and more responsible. Their product development (roadmap) is driven by problem-solving, rather than purely to innovate. They have built a product people genuinely want and will use. If we applied this approach to all fashion design - rather than creating collections then marketing and selling them to customers who up until now have not been involved in the design process - we’d see fewer returns and arguably a more sustainable fashion industry. Both quantitative and qualitative research has been key to the success of SupplyCompass. Flora’s research approach was honed whilst working at Flamingo, a global strategic insight consultancy, who ‘believe that culture is essential to understanding your business, your opportunities and your future, not only because it’s fascinating, but because it’s genuinely useful’. During her time at Flamingo, Flora worked for clients including Adidas, across Brazil, America and France. Lochhead frankly discussed a disturbing trend in Silicon Valley over the last 15 years or so. The emergence of Wall Street type VCs ⁠— who are principally focused on value extraction. This is in opposition to “Craft VCs” who helped build Silicon Valley. “Here’s the problem: the wall street types come in and they whisper sweetly into the ears of entrepreneurs and they convince them to delay going public. They convince them to make money with them.” - Christopher Lochhead Lochhead clarified that these folks are focused on value extraction from the entrepreneurs. These Wall Street VCs impose terms and conditions which are often fairly punitive to entrepreneurs and to employees. Entrepreneurs: Pay Close Attention! Lochhead forewarns entrepreneurs who are considering Wall Street VCs versus Craft VCs. First and foremost, Craft VCs prioritizes relationship with the founder and the employees. They focus on providing experience, as they are former entrepreneurs themselves. “Craft VCs partner to create value with entrepreneurs and the terms and conditions reflect this over time. The wall street folks? They just wanna come in, make money and frankly, they don’t care who else is successful. In this episode, Christopher Lochhead shares his insights about venture capitalists, start-ups, IPOs and immigrants and how these topics have driven the economy of the United States. Lochhead poses some serious questions and asks why there is not enough discussion on these matters. Venture Capitalists and The Upcoming Elections In a study published by Brookings, they claimed that “in recent decades Venture Capital (VC) has generated more economic and employment growth in the U.S. than any other investment sector. Annually, venture investment makes up only 0.2% of GDP, but delivers an astonishing 21% of U.S. GDP in the form of VC-backed business revenues."Further, Brookings stated that 51% of VCs invested around $45.7B in California. Lochhead concludes that other states are losing the opportunity of gaining value in this incredible economy. For Lochhead, the lack of support of government officials might explain the absence of VC in other States. Successful VCs have proven to create a growth dynamic that fosters innovation and creates more start-ups. Unfortunately, seated officials fail to see this. “Maybe its time for us who care about entrepreneurship and the difference that it makes in the world, to make sure that our candidates⁠—focuses on this topic.” - Christopher Lochhead IPOs Creates New Millionaires According to Yahoo! Finance, around 5,000 new millionaires will be walking the streets of Silicon Valley after this year’s IPO. They would surpass the estimated 1,000 millionaires who emerged in 2004 from Google’s IPO and the 1,000-plus millionaires in 2012 after Facebook went public.  “Tech IPOs not only create wealth, but IPOs are a hot-house flower environment for creating more startups.” - Christopher Lochhead In addition, Jay Ritter of WSJ claims in one of his articles that “the median age for tech companies going public in 1999 and 2000 was 4 and 5 years, compared with 12 years in 2018.” Immigrant Entrepreneurs Forbes reported that immigrants started the top tech IPOs in 2019. Further, an immigrant co-founded four of the five biggest tech IPOs this year, namely Slack, CrowdStrike, Uber, and Zoom⁠are.  “We need entrepreneurs and start-ups and growth-oriented businesses, cause that’s where the jobs, innovation, and productivity comes from.” - Christopher Lochhead Lochhead thinks that there is a lack of conversation about immigration⁠—it's not in mainstream media, not even in this election cycle. Specifically, he points out how the country attracts and supports immigrant entrepreneurs, given the fact that U.S. immigration law does not lean towards them. “If Americans don't want to start companies, don't we need to attract immigrants who will?” - Christopher Lochhead In the end, Lochhead is encouraging Americans to show support to small and big scale enterprises. He further believes that electing the right candidate who advocates for entrepreneurs is a good start. Lindy Morris Fishburne is the Managing Partner of Breakout Ventures, a venture capital fund, or in layman's terms, the pot of “seed” money that investors give startups to get their ideas off the ground. Lindy, who specifically works with STEM startups, focuses getting budding science and tech companies out of the lab and into the market. Lindy is also the Executive Director of Breakout Labs which is re-shaping the way early-stage science is funded so that independent researchers and early-stage companies can advance their most radical ideas.  Breakout Labs is not a typical foundation grant—they are a revolutionary, revolving funding model where successful projects fund the next generation of audacious scientific exploration. Lindy has come a long way since her Anthropology Major at Duke University, where she learned that although the social sciences interested her she didn’t have the patience or interest in doing field research herself.  In her role as the Managing Partner of Breakout Ventures and Executive Director of Breakout Labs, Lindy works with the leaders of tomorrow to get them where they need to be today. Steve Schlafman is in transition. He worked at a Venture Capital (VC) firm for a number of years and recently decided to break off on his own. Before working as a VC he had jobs at places like Microsoft and The Kraft Group, and those experiences have left an impact on how Steve looks at his career. Steve is certainly passionate about technology, but he will also talk about relationships, habits, and how he is constantly searching for how he can be his best self. He is mindful. He recently participated in a 10-day intensive meditation retreat, which he talks about in the podcast. He's a deep thinker. He recently did a "think week" where he unplugged from technology to dive into books, videos, and write about a number of topics. He is intentional. He has made shifts in his life when he looked in the mirror and felt like he needed to make a change. He also will talk about some of the challenges in his life including ADHD, anxiety, and he will share what went into his decision to not drink alcohol anymore. In this episode, we focus on the present--where he is right now, while also getting a sense of how he got to this point.
