This week on Writer's Voice: Elizabeth Vartkessian discusses The Undeserving and the human realities behind America's death penalty system. Plus an excerpt from my 2020 interview with Abdul El-Sayed on “the epidemic of insecurity” shaping American life.
Ahab's sin against Naboth was wicked, selfish, and deadly. Yet when Ahab humbled himself before the Lord, God showed mercy. This episode reminds us that mercy is never deserved, justice is never forgotten, and no one is beyond the reach of God's gracious hand when they humble themselves before Him.

Join the leadership of the Subcommittee on Human Rights and Immigration (part of the D.C. Bar International Law Community) for a timely discussion of India's Citizenship Amendment Act (the CAA), a law that expressly conditions migrants' access to citizenship rights on their religious affiliation. Implemented in March 2024, the CAA threatens the country's longstanding commitment to secularism and equality under the Indian Constitution. The law also magnifies existing tensions between religious communities through rendering certain individuals (primarily Muslims) legal and societal outsiders, or--to quote the law's architects and supporters--“infiltrators.” To date, more than 200 constitutional challenges to the law are pending before India's Supreme Court. Our guests are Aashish Yadav, a legal scholar who has published widely on citizenship and the related topic of statelessness in India, and Ankita M. Kumar, a journalist and documentary filmmaker whose short documentary, Far From Home, centers on an Afghan Muslim woman and her family who fled Afghanistan in early 2021 only to find themselves ineligible to naturalize in India or obtain resettlement in a third country. Jesus' words in Matthew 5:38–48 challenge our natural response to fight back when we are hurt or wronged. He calls us to a different way of living, one that does not mirror the anger, division, and retaliation of the world. Loving our enemies is not about feelings or weakness, and it does not mean enabling harm. It is a choice to refuse bitterness and to stop letting other people control our hearts. When we pray for those who hurt us, we release them from our grip and place them in God's hands. This is how we reclaim freedom, reflect the heart of the Father, and live the life that truly flourishes.

Gotta love [hatred]; Single mother raised a surfer Caught the california coast And all the love of mother– Dontcha know it takes a whole village Don't you know You killed my whole village? I, mother, grew up there a sawdust Choctaw, I walked across mountains and Draw sandcastles on all antarctica? Dontcha know America the beautiful from day one wanted all us Sumwuns Homeless? I yearn for the coast, But all i got was motorcycles I'd die for the surf But all i got was homeless shelters, Project housing No, don't talk back, but on your conscious Are all the drugs you swallow Just to hold the thoughts back Of the sons and daughters slaughtered For your coastal homes on water From that old money in boston To the college that it funded But you're under the impression that you earned it. Never was a live lived any easier than these and he's and hers With blue eyes; Live on autopilot unless otherwise decided Undeserving of your turkey Put machines to work for war, with every word you wrote An order form to be ignored From old man tom On turkey day; You never would forget that he was red Till he regrets to get the President a gift Of sacrificial and indigenous proportions So much for portion and/or guun control The model girls are throwing up their supper Passing over butter on the cornbread Never apple cider, only water Meanwhile in africa, It not has rained a drop No more the currency prints pennies for your thoughts no store bought penne for these staten island italians either Lets just react to image over Islam; Can the taliban afford it? A four door? Guess not. Each day at 7 o clock They use a corvette as a gun And kets just hope this judge sits highly on her honor code Beyond nazi enforcement endorsements for internment camps And turn it down; You tried your very hardest But they want you in a dungeon Or the projects, Where its much worse Marcy houses But no more the rappers platinum come from Broken home; The trappers are all planted Have a plate or more of shit you can't afford Unless you're working late Adore commercial holidays for profit ignore the purpose of the slaughter Punish all the poor, but right after you rob them Take a snore and pour your water over corn atop the cob, And in another world just hope your boy comes home from war, Or door-to-door insurance sales You might as well just heads or tails To whether you will live or die to tell the tale Of black or white Over your pecan/pumpkin pie. I don't think i'm really supposed to celebrate “thanksgiving” this year. It seems even my ancestors were forcefully evicted and tortured simply just for existing. Why should i expect in this day and age it should be any different? I'm being targeted simply just for attempting to exist in the United State of America as an African American Indigenous. Perhaps, just as in the days of the great genocide–were I perfect and young with light skin I would be left alive, to marry and make good children. But instead I am seen as a thing, and left out easily in the street– Perhaps because they haven't use for me. It is easy to torture ugly things–from which some even draw enjoyment. And so it seems my time in the world is coming to an end, And if today i am thankful for anything at all, it is this. The end of a torturous and pitiful, wretched life. THE MISTRESS coils an emerald stone and tumbles it into her expanded palm— it momentarily transforms into an equally as emerald SNAKE before becoming once again a stone inside her palm. Enamoured, she looks it over with amusement, but still sighs with the dismissal of boredom. —oh look at that, I do have a snake. What do you know! She grumbles. A single claim reframes everything: restoration arrives not because the nation of Israel finally deserves it, but because God refuses to let His name be profaned among the other nations. We walk through the first half of Ezekiel chapter 36 step by step—why the prophet speaks to mountains and ravines, how neighboring nations like Edom misread Israel's desolation as opportunity, and what Israel's exile broadcast to the world about God's strength and character. The result is a rigorous, grounded look at land, judgment, and hope that's as historically concrete as it is spiritually piercing. We revisit Israel's entry into the land, the descent into idolatry and bloodshed, and the measured justice that scattered them among the nations. Then we confront the hard edge of the text: when the exiles arrive in foreign streets, the surrounding world sneers, “These are the Lord's people, yet they've left His land.” That line becomes the turning point. God acts—not to reward improved behavior, but to vindicate His reputation and keep promises spoken long before any revival or reform. It's a counterintuitive logic of grace that shatters pride and centers divine fidelity over human effort.Join us for a clear, candid exploration of Ezekiel 36 that steadies faith, sharpens discernment, and widens awe. Jordan walks us through a wonderfully complicated talk on being a compassionate person in our complex modern world - what we think it means, what we might wish for it to mean, and what honestly brings out the best in you and me. Can we be the kind person we long to be? How do we avoid just becoming a doormat in our kindness, and do the old teachings even want us to avoid being doormats (and are we ok with that)? Are we qualified to wield Zen's famous so called fierce compassion, or are we kidding ourselves about that whole idea? Find out here!

Do you sometimes feel like an outsider in the Christian life? You may show up at church but you worry that you don't always belong. Perhaps you've made mistakes in your past or you have secret struggles or problems that you don't want to tell anyone about. Unfortunately, church has a reputation for condemning and kicking out instead of coming alongside those who have fallen down. Join me and author Oghosa Iyamu as we discuss God's radical and generous hospitality to the undeserving regardless of our past, position or power. We discuss her new 6-week Bible study, Forever Welcomed: A Study on God's Impartial Love for All. Our conversation will call all believers to reflect God's vision and His kingdom, where all who come are forever welcomed. There are people in the world who, at first glance (or second, or third), don't seem to me to deserve positive regard. At all. Maybe there are people like that for you, too.But in an ancient tale, five people are traveling through the forest: the leader, their beloved, a friend, a stranger, and a wicked person. The group is attacked, and one person must be sacrificed in return for safety for the rest. Whom should it be? The wicked person, if we're being just? The leader themself, if they're altruistic? But the answer is, no one.Because if we sacrifice anyone, then instead of spending our energy cultivating a warm and connected heart, we have to keep in mind who's in and who's out. We're in a constant process of “yes/no, yes/no,” “you but not you…,” as opposed to being in a constant process of listening, understanding, and caring.

This Sunday at Real Life Church: It's NOT Business As Usual! This is the moment Jesus did what no one expected—He revealed Himself as the Messiah… to the most unlikely person. A Samaritan woman. Broken. Overlooked. Undeserving. And He changed her life forever. In a world full of division, Jesus didn't draw lines to keep people out—He crossed them to bring people in. And He's calling us to do the same.If you're thirsty for something real...If your past tells you you're disqualified...If you've been stuck in religion without real relationship…Jesus offers you Living Water. A love that satisfies. A mission that matters.
God's love is not based on our lovability but on His nature of being love.

If we truly believe that God's mercy and grace are for everyone, then shouldn't we celebrate that? Or do we, instead, find ourselves angry when those we don't think deserve it receive that same reward?
God is bigger than we can comprehend, yet loving enough to be our friend. In this week's sermon, Pastor AJ dove into what it means to truly know who God is, breaking down His nature, His character, and His desire to transform lives—starting from scratch. Join us on Tuesdays at 7 in the LSM Building as we continue in our new series, Starting From Scratch.

God is looking for ordinary people to do extraordinary things for Him. Do you believe that? It's true. But in order to move this from your head to your heart, you need to take one very important step. Chip reveals what that step is. Don't miss it!Main Points Thesis: God delights… to do IMPOSSIBLE things… through IMPROBABLE people… to IMPART exceeding grace… to UNDESERVING recipients. Practice: Dream Great Dreams! I. How does God do it? He invites ordinary people to dream something so great that it would be impossible if God did not do it. The basis of sanctified dreaming: God is able. --Jeremiah 32:17; Luke 1:37 God is desirous. --1 Corinthians 2:9 God has promised. --Psalm 37:4 God invites us. --Psalm 2:8; John 14:12-14 II. How God births dreams in His people? Abram – He commands us to step out of our “comfort zone.” Joseph – He puts a dream within our heart. Moses – He allows us to fail in our attempt to accomplish His dreams in our own power. David – He teaches us through adversity to love the “Dream-giver” more than “the dreams.” Paul – He clarifies our calling in times of crisis and often uses our worst failures as the platform of His future fulfillment. Jesus – The dream will cost us our life and appear to others as the height of folly just before God accomplishes the impossible through us. III. How to develop bite-sized dreams for... Your life Your marriage Your children Your career Your ministry IV. The process: Write it down and then read it over regularly Pray over your dreams Look for God's intervention and direction Conclusion: God has a dream for you! --Ephesians 3:20-21 Broadcast Resource "Good to Great in God's Eyes" Resources Message Notes Year End Match Double Your Gift Today About Chip Ingram Chip Ingram’s passion is helping Christians really live like Christians. They didn't deserve it, but the Lakers got the win anyway. Against a Memphis Grizzlies team that had 13 players on the injured list, eight players in uniform, and zero players who started the season playing meaningful minutes for an NBA team, the Lakers still needed all 48 minutes to come away with a 123-120 win. How much good it does them depends on what else happens around the conference, but at least the Lakers kept the dream of moving up alive. Even if they shouldn't have been allowed to. This was, very likely, the most annoying win of the year. But it was a win, which beats the alternative. We'll see if the time LeBron (41 minutes) and Anthony Davis (43 minutes) spent on the floor that they absolutely shouldn't have needed to hurts on Sunday. But for now, at least, the Lakers got the thing that mattered most. Even if how they did it was kind of appalling.
