Greg Alba and Tara Erickson dive into the magical chaos of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the film that takes the Wizarding World to new heights with the Triwizard Tournament, the Yule Ball, and the terrifying return of Lord Voldemort. This reaction covers all the film's most iconic moments, including Harry vs. the Hungarian Horntail, the underwater challenge in the Black Lake, the maze's deadly traps, Cedric Diggory's tragic death, and Voldemort's resurrection, which remains one of the most chilling scenes in the entire franchise. The film introduces Barty Crouch Jr. (David Tennant) in a major twist, as well as Mad-Eye Moody (Brendan Gleeson), whose lessons on the Unforgivable Curses left a lasting impact on Harry and fans alike. The emotional weight of Cedric's fate, Dumbledore's "Did you put your name in the Goblet of Fire?" moment, and the shocking final duel make this one of the darkest and most defining entries in the series. Main Cast & Characters: Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter (Swiss Army Man, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story), Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley (Servant, Snatch), Emma Watson as Hermione Granger (Beauty and the Beast, The Perks of Being a Wallflower), Robert Pattinson as Cedric Diggory (The Batman, Twilight), Ralph Fiennes as Lord Voldemort (Schindler's List, The Grand Budapest Hotel), Brendan Gleeson as Mad-Eye Moody (In Bruges, The Banshees of Inisherin), David Tennant as Barty Crouch Jr. (Doctor Who, Good Omens), Michael Gambon as Albus Dumbledore (The King's Speech, Layer Cake), Alan Rickman as Severus Snape (Die Hard, Love Actually), Maggie Smith as Minerva McGonagall (Downton Abbey, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie), Gary Oldman as Sirius Black (The Dark Knight Trilogy, Dracula). The Harry Potter franchise is one of the most beloved in cinematic history. If you're the person who was a victim of one of these crimes, you do not owe the criminal your forgiveness. If somebody has tried to mind-control you, torture you, or kill you, it's not your job to forgive them. It's not your job to restore their human dignity, to tell them it was okay. They may need that; that's on them. They have to go find whatever peace they can from somebody else. The Buddies close out J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series with book 7: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. It was a sad episode for the Buddies as they finished the last chapter in their favorite book series, and got to talking about: Snape the “good guy”, Unforgivable Curses basically being magical jaywalking, and "kids" fairytales. Per usual, the Buddies got into some conspiracy theories that would make Xenophilius Lovegood look like a mainstream journalist. So grab your wands, brooms, and Deathly Hallows, for the last time and join us on our Harry Potter nostalgic farewell tour. Potter Revisited Episode #74 Mad Eye Moody AKA Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Chapter 14 "The Unforgivable Curses" Snape gives Neville the worst detention -disembowelling toads - +1 Snape Sucks because that has to be intentional Snape seems wary of Moody We know that this Moody is actually Barty Crouch Jr but he does a good job as a teacher Dumbledore is the reason the Unforgivable Curses are being taught to the 4th years this year There was no care in this class which has both Harry and Neville in it - who have trauma related to the curses they are seeing Foreshadowing hint of Neville bringing up the Cruciatus Curse It is very hard to think that Barty Crouch Jr knows who Neville is when he is one of the people that helped tortured his parents It is one thing for Neville to volunteer the curse but we do not think he was prepared to see what the curse does knowing what happened to his parents Harry seeing the spell that killed his parents is also hard to read, as he is reflecting on how they died Hermione is the only one showing Neville kindness and looks out for him - he really is the odd one out Could Harry and Ron's made up predictions for Divination be real? Chapter 23 - The Yule BallHarry and Ron both whipped around, but Hermione said loudly, waving to somebody over Malfoy's shoulder, “Hello, Professor Moody!” Malfoy went pale and jumped backwards, looking wildly around for Moody, but he was still up at the staff table finishing his stew. “Twitchy little ferret, aren't you, Malfoy?” Hermione said scathingly.Q1 - What do you think of Hermione shrinking her teeth?“Dobby knew sir must be a great wizard, for he is Harry Potter's greatest friend, but Dobby did not know that he was also generous of spirit, as noble, as selfless—”Q2 - Is Ron these things? The left sock was bright red, and he had a pattern of broomsticks upon it; the right sock was green with a pattern of snitches. “They're…they're really…well, thanks, Dobby,” said Harry, and he pulled them on, causing Dobby's eyes to leak with happiness again.Krum was accompanied by a pretty girl in blue robes Harry didn't know…His eyes fell instead on the girl next to Krum. His jaw dropped. It was Hermione.Q3 - What do you think about Krum and Hermione?!“Are we not right to be proud that we alone know our school's secrets, and right to protect them?” “Oh I would never dream of assuming I know all Howart's secrets, Igor,” said Dumbledore amicably. “Only this morning, for instance, I took a wrong turn on the way to the bathroom and found myself in a beautifully proportioned room I have never seen before, containing a really rather magnificent collection of chamberpots. When I went back to investigate more closely, I discovered that the room had vanished.Q4 - How do you like Dumbledore after all this?Hermione was now teaching Krum to say her name properly; he kept calling her Hermy-Own. “Her — my — own — knee.”"How's it going?" Harry asked Ron, sitting down and opening a bottle of butterbeer. Ron didn't answer. He was glaring at Hermione and Krum, who were dancing nearby. Padma was sitting with her arms and legs crossed, one foot jiggling in time to the music. Every now and then she threw a disgruntled look at Ron, who was completely ignoring her. Parvati sat down on Harry's other side, crossed her arms and legs too, and within minutes was asked to dance by a boy from Beauxbatons.Q5 - Trelawney's Prediction!Q6 - What is Ron so angry about?“...Don't see what there is to fuss about, Igor.” “Severus, you cannot pretend this isn't happening!” Karkaroff's voice sounded anxious and hushed, as though keen not to be overheard. “It's been getting clearer and clearer for months. I am becoming seriously concerned. I can't deny it.” “Then flee,” said Snape's voice curtly. “Flee, I will make your excuses. I, however, am remaining at Hogwarts.”Q7 - What is Karkaroff worried about? Q8 - What is Snape's background?Q9 - Did you think that Hagrid was a half-giant?Q10 - What is Cedric talking about?Ron and Hermione were having a blazing row. Standing ten feet apart, they were bellowing at each other, each scarlet in the face. “Well, if you don't like it, you now know what the solution is, don't you?” yelled Hermione; her hair was coming down out of its elegant bun now, and her face was screwed up in anger. “Oh yeah?” Ron yelled back. “What's that?” “Next time there's a ball, ask me before someone else does, and not as a last resort!” Ron mouthed soundlessly like a goldfish out of water as Hermione turned on her heel and stormed up the girls staircase to bed.Chapter 24 - Rita Skeeter's ScoopQ1 - Is Harry stupid or smart for not just taking Cedric's advice?Q2 - Why do you think Dumbledore secured a job for Hagrid when he was expelled?Q3 - Why are the Goblins looking for Barty CrouchQ4 - Where do you think Barty Crouch is?“How about giving me an interview about the Hagrid you know, Harry? The man behind the muscles? Your unlikely friendship and the reasons behind it. Would you call him a father substitute?”Q5 - Is Hagrid the closest thing to a father that Harry has had?Hermione went slightly pink, but Dumbledore smiled at her, and continued, “Hermione, Harry, and Ron still seem to want to know you, judging by the way they were attempting to break down the door.” “Of course we still want to know you!” Harry said, staring at Hagrid.“My own brother, Aberforth, was prosecuted for practicing inappropriate charms on a goat.”Q6 - What was Aberforth Dumbledore doing?Chapter 25 - The Egg and the EyeQ1 - What is the nicest bathroom you've ever been in?“What d'you do, sneak up here in the evenings to watch the Prefects take baths?“Sometimes,” said Myrtle, rather slyly, “but I've never come out to speak to anyone before.”Q2 - How creepy is Myrtle?Peeves was not the only thing that was moving. A single dot was flitting around a room in the bottom left-hand corner — Snape's office. But the dot wasn't labeled "Severus Snape"...it was Bartemius Crouch.Q3 - What was Barty Crouch doing in Snapes office?Q4 - Before Moody came into the picture, how did you think Harry would escape this?“Reckon they were after potion ingredients, eh?” said Moody, “Not hiding anything else in your office, are you?”Q5 - Do you think Snape is hiding something in his office?Snape suddenly did something very strange. He seized his left forearm convulsively with his right hand, as though something on it had hurt him.Q6 - What is this description?“Oh if there's one thing I hate,” he muttered, more to himself than Harry, his magical eye was fixed on the bottom left hand corner of the map, “It's a Death Eater who walked free…”Q7 - Who is at the bottom left-hand corner of the map? Q8 - Do you think Moody will catch this person now he has the map?Moody winked at him…Q9 - Was Moody just blinking?Q10 - Do you think Harry would be a good Auror? Isn't Moody great for encouraging that in Harry?Chapter 26 - The Second TaskOwing to the potential for nasty accidents when objects kept flying across the room. Professor Flitwick had given each student a stack of cushions on which to practice, the theory being that these wouldn't hurt anyone if they went off target. It was a good theory, but it wasn't working very well. Neville's aim was so poor that he kept accidentally sending much heavier things flying across the room - Professor Flitwick, for instance.Q1 - Is Neville secretively really good at magic?“Moody said Dumbledore only lets Snape stay here because he's giving him a second chance or something…”"I just want to know what Snape did with his first chance, if he's on his second one," said Harry grimly.Q2 - What did Snape do that he needs a second chance?Q3 - What is Snape's deal?Q4 - Grubbly-Plank or Hagrid?“I should've learned to be an Animagus like Sirius.”Q5 - What would you be if you could be an animagus?Q6 - How amazing is Dobby for helping Harry? The unsung hero of this book so far.Q7 - How is the crowd watching the second task?Harry looked around. There was no sign of any of the other champions. What were they playing at? Why didn't they hurry up? He turned back to Hermione, raised the jagged rock, and began to hack at her bindings too.Q8 - Is Harry an idiot for doing this?Q9 - Would you rather face a dragon or face an hour in icy water looking for your loved one?Dumbledore and Ludo Bagman stood beaming at Harry and Ron from the bank as they swam nearer, but Percy, who looked very white and somehow much younger than usual, came splashing out to meet them…Percy seized Ron and was dragging him back to the bank ("Gerroff, Percy, I'm all right!")Q10 - Does this change your thoughts on Percy?Q11 - Hermione is angry that Fleur kissed Ron on the cheek…does Hermione love Ron?Q12 - Danny, Do you like Fleur more after this chapter?Chapter 27 - Padfoot ReturnsOne of the best things about the aftermath of the second task was that everybody was very keen to hear details of what had happened down in the lake, which meant that Ron was getting to share Harry's limelight for once. Harry noticed that Ron's version of events changed subtly with every retelling. At first, he gave what seemed to be the truth; it tallied with Hermione's story, anyway - Dumbledore had put all the hostages into a bewitched sleep in Professor McGonagall's office, first assuring them that they would be quite safe, and would awake when they were back above the water. One week later, however, Ron was telling a thrilling tale of kidnap in which he struggled single-handedly against fifty heavily armed merpeople who had to beat him into submission before tying him up.Q1 - They make something called a wit-sharpening potion, would you take this all the time, and would it be healthy to take a potion daily?Q2 - How does Rita Skeeter keep finding this stuff out? Does she have an invisibility cloak?“I don't care how many times your picture appears in the papers. To me. Potter, you are nothing but a nasty little boy who considers rules to be beneath him."Q3 - What is Snape's issue?"It is Veritaserum - a Truth Potion so powerful that three drops would have you spilling your innermost secrets for this entire class to hear," said Snape viciously. "Now, the use of this potion is controlled by very strict Ministry guidelines. But unless you watch your step, you might just find that my hand slips" - he shook the crystal bottle slightly - "right over your evening pumpkin juice. And then. Potter...then we'll find out whether you've been in my office or not."Q4 - What do you think of Veritaserum?"What's so urgent?" he heard Snape hiss at Karkaroff. "This," said Karkaroff, and Harry, peering around the edge of his cauldron, saw Karkaroff pull up the left-hand sleeve of his robe and show Snape something on his inner forearm. "Well?" said Karkaroff, still making every effort not to move his lips. "Do you see? It's never been this clear, never since -" "Put it away!" snarled Snape, his black eyes sweeping the classroom.Q5 - What is happening here?"Thanks," said Sirius, opening it, grabbing a drumstick, sitting down on the cave floor, and tearing off a large chunk with his teeth. "I've been living off rats mostly. Can't steal too much food from Hogsmeade; I'd draw attention to myself."Q6 - Do you think Sirius is trying to eat Peter Pettigrew?Q7 - What is the deal with Crouch?Sirius shook his head and said, "She's got the measure of Crouch better than you have, Ron. If you want to know what a mans like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals."Q8 - What do you think of everything Sirius is saying about Crouch?"Well, times like that bring out the best in some people and the worst in others. Crouch's principles might've been good in the beginning - I wouldn't know. He rose quickly through the Ministry, and he started ordering very harsh measures against Voldemort's supporters. The Aurors were given new powers - powers to kill rather than capture, for instance. And I wasn't the only one who was handed straight to the dementors without trial. Crouch fought violence with violence, and authorized the use of the Unforgivable Curses against suspects. I would say he became as ruthless and cruel as many on the Dark Side. He had his supporters, mind you - plenty of people thought he was going about things the right way, and there were a lot of witches and wizards clamoring for him to take over as Minister of Magic. When Voldemort disappeared, it looked like only a matter of time until Crouch got the top job. But then something rather unfortunate happened...." Sirius smiled grimly. "Crouch's own son was caught with a group of Death Eaters who'd managed to talk their way out of Azkaban. Apparently they were trying to find Voldemort and return him to power."Q9 - What do you think about Barty Crouch's son dying? He wasn't the only one," said Sirius bitterly. "Most go mad in there, and plenty stop eating in the end. They lose the will to live. You could always tell when a death was coming, because the dementors could sense it, they got excited. That boy looked pretty sickly when he arrived. Crouch being an important Ministry member, he and his wife were allowed a deathbed visit. That was the last time I saw Barty Crouch, half carrying his wife past my cell. She died herself, apparently, shortly afterward. Grief. Wasted away just like the boy. Crouch never came for his son's body. The dementors buried him outside the fortress; I watched them do it.""Rosier and Wilkes - they were both killed by Aurors the year before Voldemort fell. The Lestranges - they're a married couple - they're in Azkaban. Avery - from what I've heard he wormed his way out of trouble by saying he'd been acting under the Imperius Curse - he's still at large. But as far as I know, Snape was never even accused of being a Death Eater - not that that means much. Plenty of them were never caught. And Snape's certainly clever and cunning enough to keep himself out of trouble."Q10 - What are your thoughts about everything Sirius mentioned?
Chapter 11 - Aboard the Hogwarts ExpressQ1 - How do you like the name Mad-Eye?Mrs Weasley took a piece of buttered toast from a stack on the kitchen table, put it into the fire tongs and transferred it into Mr Diggory's mouth.Q2 - have you guys ever had a mountain pie?“Your father thinks very highly of Mad-Eye Moody,” said Mrs Weasley sternly. “Yeah, well Dad collects plugs, doesn't he?” said Fred quietly, as Mrs Weasley left the room. “Birds of a feather.”Q3 - Which is your favorite Weasley?Q4 - What is your favorite part of the books?Q5 - You don't know a ton about Durmstrang and Beauxbatons, but which would you rather go to?“But Hogwarts is hidden,” said Hermione, in surprise, “Everyone who's read Hogwarts: A History, anyway.” “Just you, then,” said Ron. “If a Muggle looks at it, all they see is a moldering old ruin with a sign over the entrance saying DANGER, DO NOT ENTER, UNSAFE.”Q6 - Is this sign keeping you out?Q7 - What do you think of the summoning charm?Q8 - Would you wear Ron's robes?Chapter 12 - The Triwizard TournamentQ1 - Do you like Peeves?Q2 - What's the best prank you ever pulled?“Now slip me snug around your ears, I've never yet been wrong, I'll have a look inside your mind and tell you where you belong!”Q3 - Thoughts on Dennis Creevey?“There are house-elves here?” she said….”Certainly,” said Nearly Headless Nick, looking surprised at her reaction. “The largest number in any dwelling in Britain, I believe. Over a hundred.”Q4 - What are your thoughts on Hogwarts having house elves?A man stood in the doorway, leaning upon a long staff, shrouded in a black traveling cloak. Every head in the Great Hall swiveled toward the stranger, suddenly brightly illuminated by a fork of lightning that flashed across the ceiling. He lowered his hood, shook out a long mane of grizzled, dark gray hair, then began to walk up toward the teachers' table. A dull clunk echoed through the Hall on his every other step. He reached the end of the top table, turned right, and limped heavily toward Dumbledore. Another flash of lightning crossed the ceiling. Hermione gasped. The lightning had thrown the man's face into sharp relief, and it was a face unlike any Harry had ever seen. It looked as though it had been carved out of weathered wood by someone who had only the vaguest idea of what human faces are supposed to look like, and was none too skilled with a chisel. Every inch of skin seemed to be scarred. The mouth looked like a diagonal gash, and a large chunk of the nose was missing. But it was the man's eyes that made him frightening. One of them was small, dark, and beady. The other was large, round as a coin, and a vivid, electric blue. The blue eye was moving ceaselessly, without blinking, and was rolling up, down, and from side to side, quite independently of the normal eye - and then it rolled right over, pointing into the back of the man's head, so that all they could see was whiteness.Q5 - Is this her best description of someone that she's given so far?“It is my pleasure to inform you that the Triwizard tournament will be taking place at Hogwarts this year.” “You're joking!” said Fred Weasley loudly. The tension that had filled the hall every since Moody's arrival suddenly broke. Nearly everyone laughed, and Dumbledore chuckled appreciatively. “I am not joking, Mr Weasley.” he said, “though, now that you mention is, I did hear an excellent one over the summer about a troll, a hag, and a leprechaun who all go into a bar —” Professor McGonagall cleared her throat loudly.Q6 - What are your thoughts on the Triwizard Tournament and what do you think they'll have to do in it?Q7 - Neville falls through a trap step…why does Hogwarts have these?Chapter 13 - Mad-Eye MoodyQ1 - Would you want to squeeze the pus out of a bubotuber?Q2 - Which lesson would you rather go to—care of magical creatures or herbology? You are preoccupied, my dear. My Inner Eye sees past your brave face to the troubled soul within. And I regret to say that your worries are not baseless. I see difficult times ahead for you, alas… most difficult… I fear the thing you dread will indeed come to pass… and perhaps sooner than you think.”Q3 - What do you think Trelawney is talking about here?“I was saying, my dear, that you were clearly born under the baleful influence of Saturn,” said Professor Trelawney, a faint note of resentment in her voice at the fact that he had obviously not been hanging on her words. “Born under — what, sorry?” said Harry. “Saturn, dear, the planet Saturn!” said Professor Trelawney, sounding definitely irritated that he wasn't riveted by this news. “I was saying that Saturn was surely in a position of power in the heavens at the moment of your birth… Your dark hair… your mean stature… tragic losses so young in life… I think I am right in saying, my dear, that you were born in midwinter?” “No,” said Harry, “I was born in July.”Q4 - Trelawney is wrong.“Oh, professor, look! I think I've got an unaspected planet! Oooh, which one's that, Professor?” “It's Uranus, my dear,” said Professor Trelawney peering down at the chart. “Can I have a look at Uranus, too, Lavender?” said Ron.Q5 - Do you still like Rita Skeeter? Do you think her portrayal of Moody is accurate? (A handshake from attempted murder)“Professor Moody!” said a shicked voice. Professor McGonagall was coing down the marble staircase with her arms full of books. “Hello, Professor McGonagall,” said Moody calmly bounding the ferret still higher. “What — what are you doing?” said Professor McGonagall, her eyes following the bouncing ferrets progress through the air. “Teaching,” said Moody. “Teach — Moody, is that a student?” shrieked Professor McGonagall, the books spilling out of her arms.Q6 - What do you think of Moody?Chapter 14 - The Unforgivable Curses“So…do any of you know which curses are most heavily punished by wizarding law?”Q1 - Should Moody be teaching them these things?Q2 - Thoughts on the imperious curse?“Some job for the Ministry, trying to sort out who was being forced to act, and who was acting of their own free will?”Q3 - How do you think the ministry did this?Hermione's hand flew into the air again and so, to Harry's slight surprise, did Neville's…Neville looked surprised at his own daring. “Yes?” said Moody, his magical eye rolling over to fix on Neville. “There's one — the Cruciatus Curse,” said Neville, in a small but very distinct voice. Moody was looking very intently at Neville, this time with both eyes. “Your name's Longbottom?” he said, his magical eye swooping down to check the register again. Q4 - Thoughts on the Cruciatus Curse?“Not nice,” he said calmly. “Not pleasant. And there's no counter-curse. There's no blocking it. Only one known person has ever survived it, and he's sitting right in front of me.”Q5 - What are your thoughts on the killing curse?Q6 - What do you think this means to Harry to know?Q7 - Do you side with the students in thinking this was a good lesson, or with Harry and Hermione?“You've got to know. It seems harsh, maybe, but you've got to know. No point pretending.Q8 - What do you think about Neville?“No—that sounds like we're accusing him. Got to be careful…”Q9 - What are Fred and George up to?Q10 - What do you think of Harry and Ron's predictions, and what would you predict about yourself?“You're treasurer, Ron. I got you a collecting tin upstairs — and Harry, you're secretary, so you might want to write down everything I'm saying now, as a record of our first meeting.”Q11 - Why is Harry such a bad pet owner?Q12 - Do you think Sirius coming back is a good thing? The dormitory was completely silent, and, had he been less preoccupied, Harry would have realized that the absence of Neville's usual snores meant that he was not the only one lying awake.Q13 - Why is Neville awake?Chapter 15 - Beaubatons and DurmstrangQ1 - Do you think Dumbledore really wants Moody to teach these things, or is he just using the name of Dumbledore as an excuse to teach what he wants?Q2 - Why do you think Harry was able to resist the Imperius curse when everyone else in the class couldn't?“Well, the Heads of the participating schools are always on the panel,” said Hermione, and everyone looked around at her, rather surprised, “because all three of them were injured during the Tournament of 1792, when a cockatrice the champions were supposed to be catching went on the rampage.”Q3 - What do you think a cockatrice is?“Will you inform zis ‘agrid zat ze ‘orses drink only single malt whisky?”Q4 - How drunk are these horses?Q5 - Which school entrance do you like better?Karkaroff beckoned forward on of his students. As the boy passed, Harry caught a glimpse of a prominent, curved nose and thick black eyebrows. He didn't need the punch on the arm Ron gave him, or the hiss in the ear, to recognize that profile. “Harry—it's Krum!”Q6 - What do you think of Victor Krum being a student at Durmstrang?
The 3 Unforgivable Curses: Imperio, Crucio and Avada Kedavra, are tremendously dangerous. But why are THESE 3 spells in particular deemed UNFORGIVABLE when so many others aren't? I mean, I'd argue that there are worse spells out there that are MORE deserving of this title. Today we're going to be discussing all of this, and more, as we dive in to the history of the unforgivable curses, exploring their origins and classification. Let's dive in. Do we miss Professor Grubbly-Plank? Could Harry be reaching out to Lupin or other folks for help? Have we ever overslept on the day of an exam and had to wing it? Main Discussion #2: The Task and Immediate Aftermath Why are the other headmasters so visibly annoyed at Harry? Could they tone it down a bit? What does the Second Task look like, for the audience and spectators? Even Dumbledore has to ask the merpeople what happened at the end of it. Micah's Hot Take: Hermione is not meaningful enough to Krum for her to be his hostage. The hosts debate: were the ‘hostages' ever really in danger? We also polled our Patrons... twice. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we'll be discussing some of the most deadly potions known within the wizarding world of Harry Potter. From The Philosopher's Stone right through to The Deathly Hallows, Harry Potter and his friends and allies come up against many dark and dangerous things, with the most obvious being Voldemort, Unforgivable Curses—specifically, the Killing Curse—and Horcruxes. However, there are plenty of other ways that witches and wizards who are not the Chosen One can meet their end in the wizarding world. From death-dealing magical beings to plants that can kill, there is no shortage of potentially fatal spells, encounters, and objects throughout the series. One of the most overlooked dangers, however, comes in the form of POTIONS. When brewed correctly, these powerful draughts can make people fall in love or change the course of the future with fabricated luck. And, of course, some of them can even kill. So, in today's video, I'll be focusing on the top five MOST DEADLY POTIONS, ranking them in order from the least dangerous to the most. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing each instance in which Harry Potter—the aptly named “Boy Who Lived”—was hit with and RESISTED an Unforgivable Curse. To start with, I'm going to give a quick run down of the Unforgivable Curses themselves. There are, as many of you will know, three Unforgivable Curses in total. They are the Killing Curse, the Imperius Curse and the Cruciatus Curse. Each of these curses are, in their own way, incredibly terrible and can often cause irreparable and sometimes—as in the case of the Killing Curse—FATAL damage to its victims. Harry Potter may not technically be considered a work of horror, but there are plenty of horrifying aspects to explore in this episode. Katy and Emily speak with Dr. Jeff Ambrose about the scariest parts of the series and the lasting effects horrific events have on characters (and readers and viewers). The series has its fair share of monsters, torture, murder, and soul-sucking, with Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire bringing in such terrors as Death Eaters, Unforgivable Curses, and a gruesome graveyard resurrection. Horror as a genre traffics in trauma, which is bound to result from the characters' experiences. Emotion is closely tied to magic in the Potter, so manifestations of trauma in the series come in the form of Thestrals, Dementors, and boggarts but also in Harry's role as a Horcrux, literally carrying past trauma within him, and in what Harry represents to Snape. While trauma can certainly be tied to personal identity, Jeff disagrees with the idea that it erodes characters' personalities, pointing to how Harry manages to function despite his traumatic past and how characters have different responses to their trauma. Although the wizarding world and Hogwarts provide safe spaces for Harry, they are also full of dangerous and scary things: the shadow of a villain so frightening that people still fear to speak his name a decade later, a poltergeist, the ghost of a murdered student, a restricted section in the library, and the need to learn Defense Against the Dark Arts. While Harry Potter does contain a great deal of darkness, it also shows us how to overcome it. Trauma can cause characters to make mistakes, like how Dumbledore keeps secrets and Snape harbors resentment, but Harry finds a community of support and Hagrid shows love to all kinds of creatures.

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we'll be discussing what exactly those GOLD flames were that Harry shot at Voldemort during The Battle of the Seven Potters.Throughout the series, we are introduced to a many number of spells, charms and curses. And, typically, when a witch or wizard casts or conjures any magic of this kind, it's associated with an incantation and some physical manifestation of magic shooting out of the caster's wand. For example, the most well-known dark arts spell of all time is The Killing Curse, one of the three Unforgivable Curses, which is conjured with "Avada Kedavra" and results in a jet of bright green light coming out of the witch or wizard's wand. By contrast, there are also many famous spells that are conjured for good, such as the Patronus Charm, which can be cast by saying "Expecto Patronum" and which releases magic in the form of an animal, unique to each witch or wizard, and made of a silver, vapour-like substance. So, while we typically know what spell an individual is trying to conjure based on the incantation and what comes out of their wand, this isn't always the case. In The Deathly Hallows, we once again see Harry come up against Lord Voldemort, and the resulting magic is confusing...at least at first.Socials: https://linktr.ee/hptheory Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we'll be discussing how in the name of Merlin's Beard GINNY Weasley was able to block BELLATRIX Lestrange's Avada Kedavra curse. As many of you will know, Avada Kedavra is one of--if not THE--most lethal curse to exist within the entire Wizarding World. As one of the three Unforgivable Curses that were classified as such and banned from use in 1717, Avada Kedavra is a deadly spell that is also known as simply The Killing Curse. Created with potent Dark Magic, these three spells are both extremely strong and extremely sinister with the entire purpose of The Killing Curse being to eliminate its target. And with the exception of Harry Potter, no witch or wizard who has been hit with the Avada Kedavra curse has ever survived. What's more, there is actually no magical way to protect oneself against this particular curse. That is to say, there's no counter-curse or shield spell that's powerful enough to block Avada Kedavra. In fact, the only way to avoid the effects of The Killing Curse and not die upon contact is to literally AVOID the curse. This means that one can only survive Avada Kedavra if they jump out of the way or hide behind a solid enough object like a wall or boulder. Which brings us back around to the question of how in the fiery pits of HELL did a sixth-year student block a Killing Curse cast by one of the most powerful Death Eaters in Voldemort's army?!Socials: https://linktr.ee/hptheory Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we'll be discussing each instance in which Harry Potter—the aptly named “Boy Who Lived”—was hit with and RESISTED an Unforgivable Curse. The Killing Curse, which is also commonly referred to by the name of its incantation Avada Kedavra, will immediately kill its victim, while the Imperius Curse can fully possess another person and control their every move. The Cruciatus Curse, on the other hand, is a means of extreme torture, and causes incredible pain to its victim. If performed in sustained intervals, the Cruciatus Curse has the ability to make its victim go insane due to the intensity of the pain. While there once was a time long ago when witches and wizards were free to cast these spells at will, together, the three curses were classified by the wizarding world as “unforgivable” in 1717 and banned from use. This classification therefore designates the strictest punishment for any witch or wizard caught using them, which is life imprisonment in the wizarding prison of Azkaban. Of course, this classification did little to dissuade the dark witches and wizards throughout the ages from using them, including Lord Voldemort and his loyal Death Eaters. As a result, tragically, many powerful witches and wizards fighting for good have died at the end of a wand casting an Unforgivable Curse. That is, except for Harry Potter—as this young wizard is the only known person to have experienced, resisted, and survived all three curses. So, let's take a look at each instance, and uncover how he did it. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we're discussing the history of one of the most infamous spells known to the wizarding world—the Cruciatus Curse and its incantation “crucio”. For those of you who may not know, the Cruciatus Curse is one of three of the wizarding world's most formidable spells, which have come to be known as the “Unforgivable Curses”. Alongside the Cruciatus Curse, this trio of Unforgivable Curses is made up of the Killing Curse and the Imperius Curse, with the the most fatal curse—and therefore likely the most well known—being the Killing Curse, which is also known by its incantation, “Avada Kedavra”. Outside of the Unforgivable Curses, ”Avada Kedavra” may also be the most well-known spell in the entire Harry Potter universe due to its horrifyingly memorable usage throughout the series. After all, this is the incantation used by Lord Voldemort to murder Harry's parents, James and Lily Potter. It's also the spell used in the Dark Lord's attempt to kill Harry himself—not once, but twice—the first of these failed murder attempts occuring when the Killing Curse infamously bounced back at Voldemort, resulting in the demise of his first reign of power in the 1970s and early 80s. The Avada Kedavra Curse once again went awry when Voldemort tried to kill Harry with it during the Battle of Hogwarts almost two decades later. The Imperius Curse, on the other hand, is arguably the least dark and ominous spell of the three. Cast by uttering the incantation “imperio", this curse is used to essentially possess another person and control their actions. So, while certainly not a GOOD spell, it doesn't cause physical harm in the same way the other two do—which I guess makes it less terrifying, and therefore less memorable. This, of course, brings us to the third and final spell of the Unforgivable Curses, and the one that we'll be focusing on today—the Cruciatus Curse. Also known as simply the Torture Curse, the Cruciatus Curse is used by saying the word “crucio”. Within the wizarding world it has a reputation as one of the darkest spells, as it causes unimaginable pain to its victim. In fact, the suffering endured at the hand of this curse is so intense and powerful that it typically results in the victim becoming permanently afflicted mentally or physically if they are subjected to it for prolonged periods of time. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we're discussing how Harry was able to resist the Imperius Curse in the fourth instalment of the series: The Goblet of Fire.It is here--in both the novel and film--that we are first introduced to the three Unforgivable Curses. They are the Imperius Curse, the Cruciatus Curse, and the Killing Curse, all of which were taught to Harry and his fellow students by that year's Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Professor Mad-Eye Moody--who, as we later discover--was actually Barty Crouch Jr. impersonating Mad-Eye. And so, it was during one of the fake Professor Moody's lessons, that he instructed the class on the Imperius Curse, a spell rooted in the dark arts which gives the caster the ability to control the mind and actions of another witch or wizard. However, not only did Mad-Eye Moody teach the students about this curse throughout the course of the lesson, he then actually performed it on the students--a little odd but--if a pretend Professor Moody can be believed--this was in fact a direct request of Headmaster Albus Dumbledore. So, what can you do?Socials: https://linktr.ee/hptheory Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Chapter 26 - The Second TaskOwing to the potential for nasty accidents when objects kept flying across the room.

Hey everyone, welcome to another installment of Harry Potter Theory. Today, we're discussing Harry Potter- the boy-who-lived, and a rather disturbing instance in which he's able to effectively use CRUCIO- one of the unforgivable curses. Now- we're taught quite early on that the Unforgivable Curses are to hard to use, largely due to the fact that they are ‘horrible' spells that require GENUINE intent for them to work properly. In this case, we're discussing Crucio OR the Cruciatus Curse- which is arguably the hardest one to wield without proper intent. Crucio is most often used by dark witches and wizards and a known proponent of Crucio is Bellatrix Lestrange, who used it to t*rture Alice and Frank Longbottom. When cast, crucio inflicts excruciating pain on the victim - pain so excruciating that it is considered to be t*orturous. Casting Crucio is said to require a wand and incantation, and its effects are said to vary depending on the casters desires and emotions. To produce the excruciating pain implied by the name, the caster must despise the victim and enjoy causing pain. Harry Potter, after crucio was cast on him, described it as feeling like ‘his head was being split open' while ‘having his bones set on fire'. But Harry hasn't just been on the receiving end of Crucio. Evidently, our boy wonder has actually attempted to use Crucio on numerous occasions, which is awfully surprising considering Harry is well…good..and this spell T*ORTURES people.

We at Potterversity love house-elves! Join us for our valentine to Dobby, Winky, Kreacher, and Hokey and their persistent relevance for understanding injustice. House-elf fans Emily and Katy talk with Dr. Christine Schott (Erskine College) about how the house-elves keep Harry Potter relevant to social issues today. Given the upheaval this new generation of readers sees in our world, Christine tells us, the Harry Potter stories give us a "training ground" for figuring out how to respond to those problems and complexities. The unsatisfying, unresolved issue of house-elf enslavement leads us to continue thinking about this wizarding world oppression in ways that help us consider persistent injustices in our world. The house-elves can be related to all kinds of oppressed peoples, including those bound in chattel slavery, house-wives (as Katy has argued), immigrant communities, and even artificial intelligence (as Emily has explored). Yet the house-elves' ambivalent portrayal in the Harry Potter series as "happy slaves" makes us uneasy and requires us to examine them more closely. We talk about how the individual house-elves - Dobby, Winky, Kreacher, and Hokey - invite theoretical but also empathetic consideration from us. How do we understand Dobby's sacrifice in the war against Voldemort? How should we feel about Harry hoping Kreacher will bring him a sandwich at the end of the Battle of Hogwarts? Structural attempts at house-elf liberation in the wizarding world seem ineffective. What lessons can we gain about anti-racism and other social justice movements from such attempts as SPEW? Christine helps us see that there are insights to be gained about allyship and social change from how the characters struggle with the abolition of house-elf slavery. This is the value of a story that does not provide easy answers, she explains. We also talk about "cancel culture" and how to keep the study of literature relevant to both students and society at large. Read Katy's chapter on "The Real House-Elves of J.K. Rowling," Emily's essay analyzing "Dobby the Robot," Christine's essay on "The House Elf Problem," and more scholarly perspectives on house-elves in Muggle Studies. Which approach do you find the most compelling? In this episode's special Owl Post segment, we discuss one listener's question about how to understand Harry and Professor McGonagall's troubling use of Unforgivable Curses. Should we...forgive them? What do you think?

Turn to Page 209, The Unforgivable Curses. Today's lesson is called Tragedies The chapter begins with our trio excited for their first Defense Against the Dark Arts class. Moody takes roll call and then immediately begins a lesson on the Unforgivable Curses. Ron offers the Imperius Curse, Neville the Cruciatus Curse, and Hermione the Killing Curse - Avada Kedavra. Moody unceremoniously performs these curses to demonstrate why they are unforgivable, in the name of constant vigilance. Neville is shaken after class and Hermione tries to comfort him, but Moody interrupts and invites Neville up for tea. Later, Hermione shares that she has started S.P.E.W the Society for the Protection of Elvish Welfare to fight the enslavement of House Elves. She invites Harry and Ron to join, and declares their mission. As she does, Hedwig arrives with a response from Sirius, who insists on coming back to Hogwarts to help protect Harry. Book 4, Chapter 14: The Unforgivable Curses
"Where're your parents?" said Harry, his temper rising. "Out there wearing masks, are they?" Malfoy turned his face to Harry, still smiling. "Well... if they were, I wouldn't be likely to tell you, would I, Potter?" Glad to have you back with us here at Fact or Fantasy for our next installment covering Chapters 9 through Chapter 14 of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire! Today we will be tackling some crucial moments including the Death Eaters attack following the Quidditch World Cup, the Dark Mark appearing in the sky for the first time in 13 years, the arrival of a new teacher at Hogwarts and Sirius finally returning Harry's letter which leads to complications of its own. If this book is one thing, its action packed and the Riddikulus Crew is excited to break it down and unravel all the mysteries. With Winky found holding Harry's wand, Hermione initiating the first social justice project we se in this series in S.P.E.W, the announcement of the Triwizard Tournament and an auspicious demonstration of the Unforgivable Curses, you will not be disappointed. In the words of Albus Dumbledore, "There have been several attempts over the centuries to reinstate the tournament," Dumbledore continued, "none of which has been very successful. However, our own departments of International Magical Cooperation and Magical Games and Sports have decided the time is ripe for another attempt. We have worked hard over the summer to ensure that this time, no champion will find himself or herself in mortal danger."

They were first classified as "Unforgivable" in 1717. They are the Killing Curse (Avada Kedavra), Cruciatus Curse (Crucio), and Imperius Curse (Imperio). Using any of these three curses on another human being, Muggle or wizard, will result in a life sentence to Azkaban, unless there is sufficient evidence that the caster did so under the influence of the Imperius Curse. Aurors were permitted to use them during the First Wizarding War, while under Lord Voldemort's regime in 1997-1998, the curses were made legal, though this was presumably repealed following Voldemort's demise
