Send us a textIn this episode, we discuss the most important side characters from each book. Enjoy!Listen to episode 267, QuizMaster: Potions here!Topics/Summary:· 1:23 Challenge Question· 2:25 Professor Quirrell. Quirrell drives the story forward with a masterful hand, and we wouldn't have the same conflict without him. Snape is also a good option for this, but it is the contrast between Quirrell and he that makes the first book so interesting.· 7:25 Professor Lockhart. He is an absolute idiot, but an important idiot in the second book. Lockhart allows Harry to begin his journey as a hero. He also allows him to realize his connection with Voldemort which evolved later.· 13:13 Professor Lupin. I was so close to putting down Sirius Black, but in the end, Lupin takes the cake. He somehow finds a way to be everywhere. He is at the center of the conflict surrounding Sirius even though we don't know it, and he is one of the most important Harry has when it comes to a connection to James.· 16:42 Barty Crouch Jr. This is one of the easier ones on the list, because if we pick out any one event in the fourth book, Crouch had something to do with it. He was influencing the Tri-Wizard Tournament, the search for Voldemort, and the rise of Voldemort all at the same time.· 18:34 Professor Umbridge. This is another easy one. What would happen in this book without her? We wouldn't have the trial, any of the conflicts at Hogwarts, or Dumbledore's Army without her.· 21:05 Draco and Dumbledore. I'm going to cheat a little bit here and choose both Draco and Dumbledore because it is the dance of death they do in this book that drives forward the plot. Dumbledore's death was Dumbledore's own fault as much as Draco's.· 24:37 Snape. Finally, Snape. He is doing everything. He is probably the most powerful person in the wizarding world at this point just because of how many sides he is fighting for. Snape could take down anyone he chooses and influence the entirety of the war. One of the most impactful scenes of the book is when Snape is dying in the Shrieking Shack. These reasons are more than enough.Having anything you want to hear or say? Click here for a voice submission or here for text. ThePotterDiscussion@gmail.comthepotterdiscussion.comNox
In our second-to-last episode of the season, we're diving back into ‘All The Young Dudes' with chapters 44-48, rife with Sad Boy Sirius, cranky Remus, and the Dud of all Duds, Peter. We're lamenting poor Remus's first glimpse of the Shrieking Shack, drooling over Honeyduke's descriptions, and gearing up for a special season finale (during which we'll also let you know our exciting plans for Season 11)! This is the nineteenth episode of The Podgoblin's Hat, with Nina and Dave. You can find it on it's own feed wherever you get your podcasts. This story's title promises so much in terms of dragon content! In actuality there is hardly any dragon in this story, but what there is, is very good. Nina likes this story a lot anyway, Dave's more on the fence. How understandable to want a small pet of your own, who would be attached just to you! How impossible to guarantee this outcome in any way, especially when said small pet is actually a wild thing and an endangered species to boot! We revisit some familiar themes: love triangles, the impossibility of having a secret, and the unswerving aim of a Little My throwing a pointed jab. Our question for What Would Snufkin do was adapted from an AITA post on reddit Our Spirits of the Moomins are Everything Is Alive and The Mab. Our Spirit of the Podgoblin's Hat is The Shrieking Shack.

Send us a Text Message. In this episode we break down the character of James Potter. Enjoy!Topics/Summary:· 1:52 James's role in the story. First off, who is he? Unfortunately, this entire episode is here to answer that question. We can say that James was Harry's dad. He was also part of the Order of the Phoenix. Overall his was a major character, but he didn't have an absolutely huge effect on the story. He also had a positive effect, but he was more negative for the story that one might assume.· 8:14 Strengths. He is sensible, at the end of the day. This might be hard to see because of his past, but it is there. When they sent Snape down to see the werewolf that was Lupin, James realized what a bad idea it was and stopped Snape from doing it. Additionally, James is quite brave, being a true Gryffindor at heart for how he stood up against Voldemort when he came to kill the three Potters.· 15:04 Weaknesses. As sensible and brave as a person can be, there are also weaknesses. One of which are his over confidence. He was a quidditch star and had a group of popular friends. He was on top of the world and felt like he owned Hogwarts. This led to another bad trait of him being a bully. When Snape refused to bow down, James practically tortured Snape in front of the entire school.· 20:24 What would the story be like without him? Let's say James is actually John Smith, an accountant. Harry is much less of a strong character. It was the love he had for his father and the strength of the symbol of the stag that drove many storylines. Many things from Harry's hair to playing quidditch come from James. Also, Harry would have a much better and less complicated relationship with Snape. Snape wouldn't automatically hate Harry for his father and they might get along better from the beginning. However, it took them being enemies to grow even closer at the end, so they wouldn't have that moment in the Shrieking Shack. · 25:23 So who is he really? Still, we can't put a label on him, but we can get closer. He is a Gryffindor at heart, that much is clear. He is brave, noble, and sensible. He is also a bully, but not because he hates people or he wants to see them suffer, but because he wants to seem strong. He is a protector, and seeming like someone who doesn't shy away from a fight is a great way to do that.Having anything you want to hear or say? Click here for a voice submission or here for text. Chapter 5 - The DementorThey headed down to breakfast, where Mr Weasley was reading the front page of the Daily Prophet with a furrowed brow and Mrs Weasley was telling Hermione and Ginny about a Love Potion she made as a young girl. All three of them were rather giggly.Q1- Do you think Mrs Weasley gave the love potion to Mr Weasley?“Harry, I knew you were, well, made of stronger stuff than Fudge seems to think, and I'm obviously pleased that you're not scared, but —”“Harry, swear to me you won't go looking for Black.”... “Why would I go looking for someone who wants to kill me?” said Harry blankly.Q2 - Why does Mr Weasley give Harry this advice to not go looking for Black?Q3 - Would you ever want to visit the Honeydukes and the Shrieking Shack?Q4 - Why would a building be more haunted than other buildings? And then, from far away, he heard screaming, terrible, terrified, pleading screams. He wanted to help whoever it was, he tried to move his arm, but couldn't…a thick white fog was swirling around him, inside him.Q5 - What are your thoughts on Dementors?Q6 - What do you think Hermione and McGonagall talked about?“It is not the nature of a Dementor to understand pleading or excuses.”Q7 - Do you think Hagrid will be a good teacher?Harry climbed the spiral stairs with no thought in his head except how glad he was to be back. They reached their familiar, circular dormitory with its five four-poster beds and Harry, looking around, felt he was home at last.Chapter 6 - Talons and Tea Leaves“Dad had to go out to Azkaban one time, remember, Fred? And he said it was the worst place he'd ever been. He came back all weak and shaking…They suck the happiness out of a place, Dementors. Most of the prisoners go mad in there.”Q1 - What do you think of Dementors sucking the happiness out of a place?“How're you supposed to be in three classes at once?” “Don't be silly,” said Hermione shortly. “Of course I won't be in three classes at once.”Q2 - Do you think Hermione could handle the workload of three classes at once?Q3 - Would you want to take a Divination class?PREDICTION #1 - Nevilles Grandma is Ill.PREDICTION #2 - Parvati must beware a red-haired man.PREDICTION #3 - February will bring the flu…she will lose her voice.PREDICTION #4 - By Easter one of them will leave forever.PREDICTION #5 - Lavender's dread will happen Friday the sixteenth of October.PREDICTION #6 - Neville breaking the pink cup. HAPPENEDQ4 - What are your thoughts on Trelawney? When Harry and Ron had had their teacups filled, they went back to their table and tried to drink the scalding tea quickly.Q5 - Can you drink scalding hot tea/coffee?“Right, you've got a wonky sort of cross.” he said, consulting Unfogging the Future. “That means you're going to have ‘trials and suffering' — sorry about that — but there's a thing that could be the sun. Hang on, that means ‘great happiness' .. so you're going to suffer but be very happy…”PREDICTION #7 - Harry has a deadly enemy.PREDICTION #8 - The club…an attack.PREDICTION #9 - The skull…danger in his path.PREDICTION #10 - The grim…an omen of death.“You'll forgive me for saying so, my dear, but I perceive very little aura around you. Very little receptivity to the resonances of the future.”PREDICTION #11 - Neville will be late to the next class. He hardly heard what Professor McGonagall was telling them about Animagi (wizards who could transform at will into animals), and wasn't even watching when she transformed herself in front of their eyes into a tabby cat with spectacle markings around her eyes…”Really what's gotten into you all today? … Not that it matters, but that's the first time my transformation's not gotten applause from a class.”“There is no need to tell me any more, Miss Granger. Tell me, which of you will be dying this year?”“I shall not conceal from you that I have very little patience with it [Divination]. True Seers are very rare, and Professor Trelawney…”Q6 - Thoughts on McGonagall's thoughts on Trelawney?Q7 - What do you think about Animagi?Q8 - If you were part of the Magical World, would you be more like Ron or Hermione with superstitions and grims?Q9 - Should Hagrid have left a note with the students for how they should open their books?Q10 - Would you want to ride a broomstick or a Hippogriff?“No one?” said Hagrid with a pleading look. “I'll do it,” said Harry.Q11 - Is Hagrid a good teacher?Q12 - Is Sirius Black that serious that Hagrid is upset at the trio for visiting him in the dark?Chapter 7 - The Boggart in the WardrobeQ1 - Have you ever milked an injury?Q2 - Would you be good at potions?“Have you heard? Daily Prophet this morning — they reckon Sirius Black's been sighted…Not too far from here.”Q3 - Do you think the Ministry of Magic should have someone in the 911 Dispatch office? Or do you think they can bug certain words…like Sirius Black?“Of course, if it was me,” he said quietly, “I'd have done something before now. I wouldn't be staying in school like a good boy, I'd be out there looking for him.” “What are you talking about, Malfoy?” said Ron roughly. “Don't you know, Potter?”Q4 - What doesn't Harry know that Malfoy knows about Sirius Black?Q5 - What is wrong with Snape to be testing on Neville's toad?Q6 - How do you think Hermione is taking all these classes?“Good afternoon,” he said, “Would you please put all your books back in your bags. Today's will be a practical lesson. You will only need your wands.”…”when their old teacher brought pixies…” LONG LIVE LOCKHART!“I was hoping that Neville would assist me with the first stage of the operation,” he said, “and I am sure he will perform it admirably.”Q7 - What are your first thoughts on Lupin?Q8 - What would the Boggart take shape if you confronted it? (aka, what frightens you?)“It's always best to have company when you're dealing with a Boggart.”“I would like all of you to take a moment now to think of the thing that scares you most, and imagine how you might force it to look comical?”Q9 - How would you change your biggest fear into something humorous?Q10 - What is Lupin afraid of?“What would it have been for you?” said Ron, sniggering. “A piece of homework that only got nine out of ten?”Chapter 8 - Flight of the Fat LadyQ1 - How do you think the Fat Lady feels that she is just known as the Fat Lady?“Well, look at it logically,” said Hermione turning to the rest of the group. “I mean, Binky didn't even die today, did he, Lavender just got the news today —” Lavender wailed loudy, “—and she can't have been dreading it, because it's come as a real shock—” “Don't mind Hermione, Lavender,” said Ron loudly, “she doesn't think other people's pets matter very much.”Q2 - Is Hermione a good pet owner?Q3 - If you started a magical shop in Hogsmeade, what would it be?He thought for a moment of telling Lupin about the dog he'd seen in Magnolia Crescent, but decided not to. He didn't want Lupin to think he was a coward.Q4 - What is this potion that Snape gives Lupin?Q5 - How is fearing fear most wise?“He got very angry when she wouldn't let him in, you see.” Peeves flipped over, and grinned at Dumbledore from between his own legs. “Nasty tempers he's got, that Sirius Black.”Q6 - How good is the end of this chapter?!
Potter Revisited Episode #57 Pucker Up For Your Lobotomy AKA Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Chapter 20 "The Dementor's Kiss" The first thing Sirius does when getting out of the Shrieking Shack is asking Harry to live with him... and Harry is all for it despite only knowing him for a few hours and thinking he was a murderer for most of them How would Harry living with Sirius affect the series? Everyone forgets Lupin hasn't taken his potion The passage where Lupin is transforming into a werewolf is written in a cool way - showing how he loses his personality and humanity once he is the wolf Sirius tells Harry and Hermione to run but Ron is still chained to Pettigrew and Lupin Classic Hermione instinct is to go to the castle for help, but Harry runs after Sirius and a werewolf instead Harry's happy thought is living with Sirius and leaving the Dursley's - sad to think this never happens Does it make sense for Hermione not to have at least learned the patronus charm a little? The description of the Dementor's trying to suck Harry and Sirius' soul is very creepy Does the Dementor's trying to take Harry's soul show they are already outside of Ministry control? Are the dementor's drawn to Harry because of the misery of his past or because he has an extra soul? Shay brings up the issue she has with it being called the "Dementor's Kiss" what are some better alternatives? Just before Harry passes out - he thinks he sees his father. Tori discusses the old "James Survived" fan theory Shay dusts off her Psychology BA again to discuss the trauma Harry has with seeing Sirius having almost have his soul sucked out What would of happened if Sirius was cleared in PoA and how would it affect the series? Potter Revisited Episode #54 Accusatory Whiplash AKA Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Chapter 17 "Cat, Rat & Dog" This chapter has so much great buildup and reveals Is Buckbeak actually dead in this timeline? Ron pushing Harry out of the way of the giant dog - MVP move Is Ron pushing Harry out of the way his own will? Or is it the Horcrux in Harry causing him to protect him Ron's leg breaking is still hard to read Harry's reasoning to not go for help - "That thing is big enough to eat him!" Why don't the trio ever split up? Hermione could of gone for help while Harry went after Ron The Shrieking Shack reveal is great Was the tunnel to the Shrieking Shack made for Lupin like the Whomping Willow was planted, or was it already there and repurposed? The Sirius Black reveal - also amazing! Sirius doesn't do himself any favours being super vague Harry has a voice telling him to kill Black - is this his own inner voice or the Horcrux inside him? Ron's line "If you want to kill Harry, you'll have to kill us too!" is such a great Ron moment and it doesn't make sense why Hermione got it in the movie Does Harry even know how to kill someone with a wand? How did Crookshanks come to trust Sirius? Lupin comes in, but before we can truly feel relieved, it appears he is in league with Sirius - such a big betrayal The short conversation Lupin has with Sirius before they hug really shows how close they were before The emotions Lupin must have gone through thinking Sirius was bad all this time, and then learning that he was actually framed Lupin does a great job of deescalating the trio - without him Sirius would have been a goner Should the chapter have been split into two? The Sirius Black reveal is overshadowing pretty quickly by the other accusations and the Peter reveal Snape Sucks total for Chapter 16: 0 Email any thoughts, questions or feedback to potterrevisitedpodcast@gmail.com Fill our our Listener Survey here: https://forms.gle/QFEJNAEtQdzXLSBC7 Music: Shelter Song by Alexander Nakarada (www.serpentsoundstudios.com) Licensed under Creative Commons BY Attribution 4.0 License https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Follow Us: Facebook https://www.facebook.com/potterrevisited Twitter https://twitter.com/potterevisited Instagram https://www.instagram.com/potterrevisited_/ Youtube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4v2Xt0OIQ8_LCVYhKf2S5A TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@potterrevisited

You may know The Haunting of Hill House from the acclaimed TV series - but at the heart of that adaptation is the 1959 gothic horror novel by American author Shirley Jackson. Considered to be the ghost story of the 20th century, this classic is a story about (yes, you guessed it) a haunted house and four characters determined to get to the bottom of the paranormal happenings. We chat about the novel's eerie atmosphere, its fascinating character study, how we picture settings and characters while reading, and of course our thoughts on the TV adaptation. Follow us @throughthepagespod on Instagram and TikTok to get in touch and to let us know your thoughts!

Chapter 1 - Owl PostHarry Potter was a highly unusual boy in many ways. For one thing, he hated the summer holidays more than any other time of year. For another, he really wanted to do his homework, but was forced to do it in secret, in the dead of night. And he also happened to be a wizard.Q1 - Wendelin the Weird is so named because she liked to be burned, if you had a title to your name, what do you think it would be?Q2 - Why haven't wizards adopted ballpoint pens yet?For years, Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon had hoped that if they kept Harry as downtrodden as possible, they would be able to squash the magic out of him. To their fury, they had been unsuccessful.Harry sat down on his bed, grabbed Errol's package, ripped off the brown paper and discovered a present wrapped in gold, and his first ever birthday card.Q3 - Do you think the grand prize was fixed so that the Weasleys could win after what happened to them last year?Q4 - Would you want a pocket Sneakoscope?Q5 - Did you guys get really into the go-back-to-school countdown and sales and stuff? At that moment, Harry Potter felt just like everyone else: glad, for the first time in his life, that it was his birthday.Chapter 2 - Aunt Marge's Big MistakeQ1 - Have you ever, in your town, heard about a prisoner escaping or some serious crime happening?Q2 - Have you ever called someone Aunt or Uncle who isn't really your relative?Q3 - Do you think Harry's strategy of threatening his Uncle to forget the school name in order to get his permission form signed is the right way to go about it?Aunt Marge loved criticizing him, so the untidier he looked, the happier she would be.Harry was bursting to say that he'd rather live in an orphanage than with the Dursleys, but the thought of the Hogsmeade form stopped him.Q4 - Would you rather live in an orphanage or with the Dursleys?Q5 - Why do you think Vernon made Harry sit there with Marge at the dinner table?“It all comes down to blood, as I was saying the other day. Bad blood will out. Now, I'm saying nothing against your family, Petunia” — she patted Aunt Petunia's bony hand with her shovel-like one, “but your sister was a bad egg. They turn up in the best families. Then she ran off with a wastrel and here's the result right in front of us.”POD NOTE: Danny mentioned Harry was sure to run away soon if he didn't end up going to Hogwarts.Chapter 3 - The Knight BusQ1 - What do you think Harry saw that was “very big, with wide, gleaming eyes…like a dog, but massive?”“That man!” Harry said, forgetting his troubles for a moment. “He was on the Muggle news!” Stanley turned to the front page and chuckled. “Sirius Black,” he said, nodding, “Course ‘e was on the Muggle news, Neville. Where you been?”Q2 - Where have we seen Sirius Black before in this book?Q3 - Why do you think Sirius Black murdered 13 people with one curse?“Laughed,” said Stan, “Jus' stood there an' laughed. An' when reinforcements from the Ministry of Magic got there, ‘e went wiv ‘em quiet as anyfink. Still laughing ‘is ‘ead off. Cos ‘e's mad, inee, Ern? Inee mad?”Q4 - How do you think a wizard or witch could escape from a magical prison?Q5 - Why did Fudge come to see Harry?Chapter 4 - The Leaky CauldronQ1 - Why do you think Florean Fortescue is giving Harry free sundaes every half-hour?Q2 - Which of Harry's two new classes (Care of Magical Creatures or Divination) sounds more interesting?Q3 - Would you want a pet rat or a cat?Q4 - Who is your favorite of the Weasleys?“...makes no sense not to tell him” Mr Weasley was saying heatedly. “Harry's got a right to know. I've tried to tell Fudge, but he insists on treating Harry like a child. He's thirteen years old and—” “Arthur, the truth would terrify him!”Q5 - Why do you think Sirius Black wants to murder Harry?Chapter 5 - The DementorThey headed down to breakfast, where Mr Weasley was reading the front page of the Daily Prophet with a furrowed brow and Mrs Weasley was telling Hermione and Ginny about a Love Potion she made as a young girl. They reached their familiar, circular dormitory with its five four-poster beds and Harry, looking around, felt he was home at last.
Twilight/Midnight Sun chapter 'Goodbyes' The classic Song of Throne and Games button gets a workout this week as we discuss dudes' heads exploding on the new one of those shows, along with the rumor that a Wizarding World HBO show is in the works (again). We've also got quite a chapter to discuss: one with a brisk, thrilling pace that falls apart the instant we prod at any of its ridiculous setup. We've got dudes running, more Tracker Lore, and spy base shutter doors (???) and much more to get through on this week's Shrieking Shack!
Prophecy marks Harry Potter as the one with the power to defeat the Dark Lord. But right now, he's just a kid with problems of his own. I wrote a little book that just might help. Twilight chapter 8/Midnight Sun chapter 9. This week features Bella storming off to her room to listen to Linkin Park (really!), getting so mad at Mansfield Park she slams her book shut, and Edward using vampire telepathy to read peoples' horny thoughts--and that's the easy stuff. There's also a pair of new evil vampires that Edward is worried might attack Bella, but not that worried? Oh, and we learn, through a throwaway line, that there are Vampire Wars. All this and more on a jam-packed Shrieking Shack... I'm starting to worry that Edward might not make up his boyfriend points anytime soon.
- In Chapter 19 of Prisoner of Azkaban, Snape arrives at the Shrieking Shack and attempts to detain Lupin and Sirius Black. The trio disarms him so that Lupin, Black, and Pettigrew can tell the whole story behind the portrayal of Lily and James Potter.- Today's prompt is: Had Snape waited to hear the whole story of Peter's betrayal before revealing himself, would it have changed anything? Would his feelings and behavior towards Remus and Sirius have changed?- This episode is hosted by Geoff Hutton.- Join in the conversation on MuggleNet's social media channels by using #PromptlyPotter
- In Chapter 17 of Prisoner of Azkaban, Sirius Black - in Amimagus form - drags Ron under the Whomping Willow. As Harry and Hermione pursue them, they emerge within the Shrieking Shack and discover the truth of Scabbers' identity.- Today's prompt is: "Harry, don't trust him, he's been helping Black get into the castle, he wants you dead too — he's a werewolf!” Did Hermione absorb some prejudice against werewolves from Snape's assignment, and is that why she jumps to these conclusions about Lupin?- This episode is hosted by Richa Venkatraman.- Join in the conversation on MuggleNet's social media channels by using #PromptlyPotter
Cursed Child stage play. We're in the big apple, baby! We took a plane/time machine into the past to see a performance of the Cursed Child in New York with the original London cast. We... had a surprising time! We dig into all of our detailed thoughts: what met our expectations, what surprised us, and what let us down. This 8th story has been a real roller coaster for us, and you might be surprised on where we end up on this one! What main character did we find ourselves hugely disappointed in? Did the effects and production dazzle us as much as the reviews said they would? Did Imogen Heap's jukebox musical score delight us as much as the Voldemort Day video did? Find out all this and more on this week's Shrieking Shack! NOTE: This is the wackiest of warnings to give but I edited a car horn honking into the intro--so if you happen to drive while you listen to this show be aware that yes, that honk came from the podcast!! We're taking a week off to plan our next moves, but we'll be back week after next with some Sloper Content and more!
Everyone catches their breath after a very scary encounter at the Shrieking Shack's Horror Night of Horrors. Later, they all get an invite to hang out with the cool kids. Episode 10 (Minutes 1:30:12 to 1:40:00): This week winds us through the Shrieking Shack to find a very grimy Sirius waiting for the trio. We get some frantic explanations and some pretty gross costume decisions and we ask some questions about the Shack itself. Join us for this odd reunion scene ending with a couple transformations as we near the end of this season! Join us next week for minutes 1:40:00 to 1:50:00! (Scene Marker: This chunk ends with Wormtail transforming and running away as a rat.)
The chapter begins with the slow trek back through the tunnel connecting the Shrieking Shack and the Whomping Willow. Most of the attention is simply on being able to move with an unconscious Snape, an injured Ron, and a dangerous Pettigrew. Harry and Sirius do have an important conversation about living together when Sirius is exonerated. Harry is jubilant as they exit the tree, only to quickly become terrified as Lupin transforms into a Werewolf. Sirius transforms into his dog form to fight and distract Lupin, and Pettigrew transforms into a rat and escapes again. Ron is petrified on the ground, and Harry and Hermione run to help a yelping Sirius, who turns back into his Human form and is under siege by the Dementors. They try to save him with the Patronus charm, before eventually succumbing to the Dementors' effect and being subjected to the Dementors' kiss. Just before all is lost, a powerful Patronus charm rolls through the clearing. Music: The Curious Kitten by Aaron Kenny #MagicalTheory #HarryPotter #podcast #WizardPhD ✨Like the podcast? The chapter begins with our trio thinking Lupin is out of his mind. He tries to calm them and Sirius Black down, so he can tell them how it is possible that Scabbers is actually Peter Pettigrew. He begins the story by describing his experiences as a young child bitten by a werewolf. When Dumbledore became headmaster at Hogwarts, he extended an invitation to Lupin to join. To alleviate the risk Lupin harmed anyone during his transformation, Dumbledore planted the Whomping Willow and created the tunnel to the Shrieking Shack, where Lupin was placed before he transformed and remained until he was back to human. Lupin made friends at Hogwarts: Sirius Black, Peter Pettigrew, and James Potter. And they discovered what was happening to him and learned how to transform, each as a different Animagus to accompany their friend during his werewolf transformations. Just as Lupin got to telling the group about how Snape distrusted Lupin even now, after having been rescued from an attack, Snape reveals himself. The chapter begins with our trio coping with Buckbeak's execution and the surprising return of Scabbers. Just as they are trying to return to the castle, however, Crookshanks appears and harasses Scabbers, who struggles to escape Ron's grip. A massive dog arrives and also lunges after Ron, pulling him and Scabbers into the Whomping Willow. Crookshanks helps Harry and Hermione by subduing the tree and allowing them to follow after the dog. After passing through a long tunnel, they arrive in the Shrieking Shack, to find that the dog was actually Sirius Black. Weakened and delirious, Sirius still manages to disarm Harry and Hermione, but fails to defend himself from Harry simply physically attacking him. Eventually, a disarmed Sirius lies helplessly, with Crookshanks guarding him. Harry precariously hangs on the edge of murder before Professor Lupin arrives. In only a few moments, however, our trio is shocked to see that Lupin, a werewolf, lifts Sirius up and embraces him. Harry is shocked and furious, but Lupin manages to begin revealing the truth of what has been happening, finally claiming that Scabbers is, in fact, Peter Pettigrew. This week, we brought it back around to pornoprophetics by talking about Hoshea. Jaz and Lulav disagree about what level of reality to read the haftarah on, but both agree that the plain reading of this text describes a really gnarly dude being abusive to a sex worker and to their children together. Due to discussion of sexual violence, including descriptions of physical & emotional abuse and mention of a book about sexual abuse of a child, as well as just us talking about sex and kink slightly more than is prudent, this episode is marked EXPLICIT.Transcript available here. Production on this episode ran up to the wire, and only the first 18 minutes of the transcript is available as of release. This episode's title is based on the acronym "sex-worker-exclusionary radical feminist" — much like TERFs and often overlapping, they disregard the agency and lived experience of the people they exclude from their feminism. Calling Hoshea a SWERP is more of a joke than an actual comparison to SWERFs, tbh.The Shrieking Shack is a Harry Potter deepread podcast that just finished all seven horrible books, and which we have referenced frankly a lot on this podcast already. Tegan and Sara are sisters, which is not a euphemism, though they are both famously lesbians. Their music is often polarizing to lesbians — Lulav is a fan, but she knows others who are Deeply Opposed. Dean Kamen invented the Segway, which you definitely don't need to remember or know, but you can see both of them in this picture. Jaz references The Metaphors We Live By, by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson — you can read an overview of conceptual metaphor on this Wikipedia page. Miguel James's "Contra la policía" is translated by Guillermo Parra on his blog here. Jaz promised links about humiliation play, but they are asleep after a long trip so check this space in the future. Lulav references Vladimir Nabokov, who has written several beautifully poetic books about super gnarly dudes, but Lolita is both his most famous book and the one that Lulav chooses to focus on in her comparison. Also, if someone has read the book and still refers to the titular character by the nickname the abusive narrator created for her or uses the word "nymphet", Lulav advises that you run real fast in the opposite direction. If you're a current or former sex worker and have quibbles with or additions to the content of this episode, hit us up at kosherqueers@gmail.com. This week, we talk about how God needs to give humans scaffolds to learn, holy princes are turned to evil nonsense, a Jewish dude gets a tattoo, and there are some rad name shenanigans. Also, craftspeople are literally magical, but then you gotta take responsibility for the things you create.Full transcript available here. The first couple seasons of "Ink Master" are available on Netflix. The Shrieking Shack podcast is cool and can be found here. The bit that Lulav quotes from the Quran is surah 22:5. The other older text that Jaz pulled from for an alternate translation was printed for the British and Foreign Bible Society. This week, there are so many women in the story! By which we mean, a full three women, two of whom even get names. This we also get some sung folktales, a female friend who is too cool for you who you know is silently or not-so-silently judging you, and intermarried rabbis (meaning, of course, rabbis who marry other rabbis). Full transcript here. Lulav recommends Harry Potter and the Lack of Lamb Sauce by imagitory. She also mentions the podcast The Shrieking Shack, which is a Harry Potter podcast for lapsed fans, with extremely long episodes. Also, Jaz's friend who had a bat mitzvah recommended this article about swarming in their d'var Torah. You can check out our episode last year on the parsha Shoftim here. You can see the comment from Midrash Tehillim alongside the quote it's pulling from here. You can listen to the groups Jaz mentioned who are doing cool collective queer Jewish music on Soundcloud at the Queer Nigun Project and Let My People Sing and learn more about Let My People sing on their website. This is by no means a comprehensive list; there are many more cool queer Jewish singers. This week's reading is Judges 4:4–5:31. Next week's reading is Isaiah 6:1–7:6 and 9:5-6.Support us on Patreon or Ko-fi! Deathly Hallows chapter 32. The Brand has a new hero! We wonder aloud what, if anything, this changing of the guard could mean--and then suit up to drop into the Battle of Hogwarts for another chapter filled to the brim with war movie tropes. Once the flashbang wears off and the sound comes back, it's off to the titular Shrieking Shack for a big speech from Voldemort, a snake floating around in a bubble shield, and the passing of one beloved professor. Finally, we play a game trying to identify Fantastic Beast quotes from a list of Mugglenet's "most memorable" scenes from the film--some of which are Nothing, and some of which are kinda eyebrow raising!
In this episode we were joined by the wonderful Sarah Sarwar for discussions about how Crookshanks is a top and we all just need to accept that; how the tunnel to the Shrieking Shack is a metaphor for polyam relationships; Harry’s attachment style; how absolutely tragic this chapter is; and so much more. This week, we spend like half the episode on background info, and in the back half casually try to figure out what love is, what our obligations to each other are, and if G-d can consent to people hurting us, so you know, just the easy stuff this week. Also, Lulav smushes together the English "Jerusalem" and the Hebrew "Yerushalayim" to create the word "Yerushalem" (thereby maybe accidentally re-creating Aramaic pronunciation?)Transcript available here. Soon we're going to move all our transcripts to our new website, but for now they're still in Google Doc form. This week's reading was Isaiah 54:1-55. Next week's haftarah reading will be Isaiah 40:27–41:16. Jaz is reading The Prophets by Abraham Joshua Heschel. Lulav makes jokes about the podcast "The Shrieking Shack" and about The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. For more of Jaz yelling at G-d, you can see their poetry included the zine Dodi. Welcome to a new quarantine project brought to you by the RealzTenisFanz Podcast! We are excited to have the lovely Deb (@shackle52) that most of you already know from twitter to join Realz (@realztenisfanz) and Janina (@jlr78) as we break down the Harry Potter series while Andreen is locked up in Azkaban for not sharing our love of this magical world! We will be taking a literary dive into all 7 Harry Potter books in chronological order. We hope you will be an active part of this series. ****We appreciate you taking time out of this chaotic world to listen and discuss these books with you. This was a tough episode to record. We know, understand and feel the pain of systemic racism, police brutality and impunity, racial injustice, capitalism, the oppressive forces of the isms as well as their intersections of them all in and on our lives. We know, understand and feel your frustration. In these times, we can only encourage you to be kind to yourself and others, do what you can to be a positive change in the world and READ. READ and ENGAGE with the works of the great writers (Baldwin, Lorde, Davis, Morrison et al) who have come before us and with us now. The writers (Cesaire, Fanon, King, Anand Giridharadas @AnandWrites et al) who demand that power and capitalism be held accountable for the lives that they destroy. Remember, PEOPLE over PROFITS and when BLACK LIVES MATTER (in all forms, female, male, straight, able-bodied, disabled, gay, bi, trans, queer et al) then all lives matter ***** In our 6th Episode, we conclude Book 3: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. We get into Prof. Trelawney and how effective a teacher she is, if a teacher at all. We discuss the magical implications of the predicting the future when one is able define structural and elemental conventions. Past, present trust and friendships collide in the Shrieking Shack as Harry is again confront with a history that is determining his future but is hardly present for him now. And what of this traveling back to the past? We also delve into some of the plot potholes that we find in the text. As always, we welcome suggestions, comments, criticism, praise, questions and nuanced insights. Be warned that there might be some cuss words but we will strive to never go beyond PG-13 rating. This week, we discuss the ethics of counting, come up with some alternatives for the English word "tribe," and discover that the Torah believes in West Coast, Best Coast. Plus, we decide that two leaders are boyfriends just because. Full transcript here. You can buy Sister Outsider by Audre Lorde from your local independent bookstore. The etymology for the word "tribe" can be found here. You can also check out this report on nuclear waste signage. Also, we reference the Shrieking Shack briefly; they're "a Harry Potter re-read podcast for lapsed fans," which include us, as people who grew up with the books and the fandom and also cannot stand JK Rowling for many reasons (not least of which is the transmisogyny). Anyway, here's the episode we referenced. Hello and welcome to Mimblewimble, the now-video and audio Harry Potter podcast! A lot of people have asked us about how the sausage gets made (we’re flattered!) so we decided to do something fun and do two versions of this episode: an unedited video version and a more polished audio version for the people who prefer to listen to us and not look at us. Enjoy! In this episode, we covered Chapters 19. The Servant of Lord Voldemort and 20. The Dementor’s Kiss. SUMMARYAfter Snape reveals himself in the Shrieking Shack, he makes it clear that he has no intention of listening to Sirius’ side of the story. His childhood humiliation and hatred takes over. and he wants to give Sirius over to the dementors and Lupin too for supposedly helping Sirius. Shocked by how deranged Snape sounds, Harry, Ron, and Hermione take matters into their own hands and knock Snape out to give Sirius and Lupin a chance to explain. They reveal that Scabbers, the rat, was in fact Peter Pettigrew and that he faked his own death to escape getting caught by Sirius. Lots of questions that have been building up since the beginning of the book are answered in this chapter:Why was Scabbers losing his health? Why was Crookshanks obsessed with Scabbers? How and why did Sirius escape?Who was the actual secret keeper? Why would Peter Pettigrew not utilise all the chances he had to kill Harry? How did Harry end up seeing the Grim during the Quidditch match? Or did he really see the Grim? And more! We really like bullet points! Harry decides that they should hand Pettigrew over to the authorities instead of letting his father’s best friends kill him and go to Azkaban. But unfortunately, on the way to the castle, Lupin transforms into a violent werewolf because it was full moon and he’d forgotten to take the wolfsbane potion. Sirius turns into a dog to protect the others from Lupin. But Pettigrew uses the chaos to attack Ron and Crookshanks and escape. The Dementors find Sirius. Harry and Hermione try their best to save him. Sirius loses it, Hermione loses it, and Harry is about to be kissed by a Dementor when a mysterious Patronus saves them. At this point, we are just very happy that Harry’s first kiss was not a Dementor.NOTESHow do we look and sound? Do you prefer this format or would you like it if we just stuck to audio? Let us know what you think! We hope you’re staying indoors and being safe. Social distancing is the need of the hour. We recorded this episode before things got a little dire over here.
Happy Val Day Sab! You won't need a love potion to fall for this week's episode. And that's good cause we spend about 5 minutes debating what love potions would smell like to us. Then we take it back to 2002 and play a game of Harry Potter MASH. Who will live in the Shrieking Shack and work as a janitor? Check out our Instagram to play on your own round, and let us know your future. But wait, there's more! The hags couldn't do Valentine's Day without a hot date. So we played a little game called Mystery Date! Who's gonna spend their Vday on someone's hog? We mean a motorcycle! Right? Listen and play along! Follow us! Alice and Martha sound like Lucius as they discuss "the boy," who makes his way out of the castle and heads for the Shrieking Shack. Hagrid also makes his way out of the castle as the acromantulas get a bit restive. And finally, it's the ultimate flight of the Prince. This week, your hosts are discussing the truth about one Peter Pettigrew, and possibly divorcing over Severus Snape. Will Kev's blood pressure ever go down after the incredibly stressful events in these 41-odd pages? What moment had both Wilsons literally crying while talking about it? Who smells the worst in The Shrieking Shack? And why would Pavarti Patil and Crookshanks ever be brought up in the same sentence? Support the show (http://patreon.com/thefoxandthefoxhound)
IT’S THE MOMENT WE’VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR.But first, a summary of the events we cover in this episode, chapters 14. Snape’s Grudge and 15. The Quidditch Final. After Sirius Black almost attacked Ron, more steps are taken to increase Hogwarts security: Sir Cadogan is out and the Fat Lady is instituted again, along with security trolls to protect her. When Ron and Harry meet Hagrid to discuss Sirius Black, they discover that Hermione had been helping him to argue for Buckbeak for their case against the committee for the Disposal of Magical Creatures. He also tells them to value the friendship they have with her. However, Hagrid’s plan to get them back together has no chance of going through because Ron and Harry immediately hatch a plan that Hermione doesn't get behind: Harry visiting Hogsmeade using the invisibility cloak. Ron and Harry visit Zonkos, the post office and the Shrieking Shack. Everything would have been fine and things would have gone off, without a hitch, if Harry had not reacted to Malfoy’s comments about the Weasley family by throwing muck at him. He almost gets into serious trouble with Snape but Professor Lupin rescues him and admonishes him for being careless. He also reveals that he knows the makers of the Marauders Map. To make things worse, Harry and Ron find out from Hermione that Hagrid’s appeal failed and that Buckbeak’s execution date has set. This news unites the trio finally, right in time for the Quidditch final. It’s Gryffindor vs Slytherin for the Quidditch Cup, a match that Harry wins for Gryffindor. When he lifts the cup in the air, he feels that it would probably be the happiest moment of his life. Are we done?Feels like we’re done.Oh yeah, Hermione hears Malfoy talk shit about Hagrid and just slaps him. Just slaps, no questions no explanations. Her rebellious streak continues when she doesn't show up for the Charms class and quits Divination, quite dramatically. As with everything, Hermione is better than Harry and Ron at teenage rebellion too!NOTESHermione slaps Malfoy in the book but she punches Malfoy in the movies. We’re pedantics, till the bitter end. Aishwarya had a cold while recording this episode. Apologies for the stray sniffs and the nasal voice. It’s our two year anniversary! It can be a little violent and emotional, but this tree actually helped a lost little boy come to terms with his condition. The Whomping Willow is a staple of the Hogwarts grounds. Planted in 1971, this tree protected the entrance to the Shrieking Shack so a young werewolf could attend school.

Prisoner of Azkaban chapters 19-22. Our third reading adventure is over. After fifty Quidditch games and ten chapters of faffing around in the titular Shrieking Shack, we discuss the end of Prisoner of Azkaban in fine detail: including dog brains, House Elf Dementors, the ethics of taking a life, and fate vs. free will. That sounds like a joke, but it's not! Listen now and find out if the third Harry Potter book stuck the landing or takes a dive. (incidentally, Harry's really good at those)
Prisoner of Azkaban chapters 17-18. We uncover Pottermore's "revelations" about Fantastic Beasts. Then we get into the very exciting scenes that take place in the Shrieking Shack itself, which are way more farcical than we were expecting. To commemorate this occasion, Liz's fanfiction chops are put to the test with the ultimate Marauder fic quiz.
EXPELLIARMUS! Get your ears ready for this one! Jared and James are breaking down everything that happens in the Shrieking Shack in Chapters 17, 18, and 19 of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Be aware! Chamber of Secrets chapters 15-16. It's nearly over, but our suffering isn't quite through yet. Harry meets a giant spider in a pointless chapter and then "solves" the mystery that Hermione worked so hard to investigate, and Ginny walked in on Percy cranking it or something. It's all a mess, but fear not: the Shrieking Shack is here to fix Hogwarts by designing an all-new house to replace Slytherin! Slurp??
