Brian Swimme elucidates the philosophical and scientific underpinnings of humanity's relationship with the universe. He delves into the concepts of the “universe story” as a framework for understanding our existence, our interconnections as “cosmological beings,” and the evolution of humanity's shared knowledge. Through understanding our cosmological origins and the evolutionary saga, Swimme believes we can cultivate a new consciousness, recognizing ourselves as "cosmological beings" intrinsically linked to the cosmos. This expanded awareness, integrating science and spirituality, can lead to a more harmonious and responsible relationship with Earth and its inhabitants. Swimme sees the Earth Charter as an archetypal example of this evolving planetary wisdom, reflecting humanity's growing understanding of its interconnectedness and responsibility for the planet.

This conversation with Mary DeJong, spiritual companion and sacred ecology teacher, is all about re-wilding. She teaches us what it means to look at where our wild selves have been blocked or dammed, and how to find our truest flow again. She teaches us: God is right here on this wild earth. She invites us to look up and look down and see God all around us.About MaryMary DeJong is a spiritual ecologist, ecotheologian, wild soul guide, urban naturalist, and practitioner and guide of place-based pilgrimage. She specializes in the spiritual companionship of "rewilding" and instructs spiritual directors and companions through Spiritual Directors International and One Spirit Learning Alliance. Mary facilitates retreats and pilgrimages in the Pacific Northwest and in Iona, Scotland that strengthen the unique and mystical interconnection of participants, the sacred, and the natural world. She has studied and practiced within the Celtic Christian spiritual tradition, her own maternal line heritage, for over twenty years, and is influenced by the lives of Celtic saints, and the lands that guided them. She holds a post-Heroic Journey framework that calls us to emerge as poets and prophets, instead of heros, an applied mythological worldview that is connected to her training within mythology and the emerging field of ecopyschology. Mary's theoretical and praxis focus within deep ecology, eco-spirituality, ecotheology, ecopsychology and specialization in Thomas Berry's Universe Story delves into why place matters, the sacramentality of creation, and how together this informs the development of our ecological self. Mary terms this work “sacred eco-awakening” and sees this as a critical and holy endeavor as it allows us to come to grievous terms of our human history and to posture ourselves once again side-by-side with the whole of creation.Connect with MaryVisit Mary's websiteLearn about the Waymarkers Iona PilgrimageRewilding Retreats | December 16, The Whidbey Institute (Whidbey Island, WA) Cascade Mountains Rewilding Retreat | April 5-7, 2024Wild Seasons (virtual self-paced rewilding course)Connect with us!Sign up to receive a little Gospel in your inbox every Monday Morning with our weekly devotional.Check out our website for great resources, previous blog posts, and more.Get some Lady Preacher Podcast swag!Connect with us on Instagram and Facebook

On the latest episode I'm joined by Glenys Livingstone, a pioneering researcher and thought leader who's been walking the Goddess path since 1979. Glenys is the author of "PaGaian Cosmology: Re-inventing Earth-based Goddess Religion, which fuses the indigenous traditions of Old Europe with scientific theory, feminism, and a poetic relationship with place." This book was an outcome of her doctoral work in Social Ecology. Her newest book is "A Poiesis of the Creative Cosmos: Celebrating Her within PaGaian Sacred Ceremony," which synthesizes much of her work over the years. On today's episode we discuss:* Glenys' spiritual background, including her conversion to Catholicism in her teens, as well as her growing disillusionment with Christianity* The "a-ha" moment that occurred when she realized, pregnant and unmarried, that knowing a female deity would allow her to view her situation without shame* What "PaGaian cosmology" means, including how it combines pagan spirituality with scientific theory to give us a new way to recognize and honor Her (the Goddess) as creative life force* Why it's important that we recognize the inherent power in language and the naming of things and life experiences * How honoring the equinoxes, solstice and cross-quarter days found on the pagan Wheel of the Year can bring us closer to the Sacred Feminine and provides an opportunity to consciously participate in the creative dance of the cosmosShow Notes If you'd like to know whose ancestral tribal lands you currently reside on, you can look up your address here: https://native-land.ca/My book, “Home to Her: Walking the Transformative Path of the Sacred Feminine,” is now available Womancraft Publishing! In these podcasts of the Journey of the Universe Conversations we will meet scientists and historians, environmentalists and teachers, gardeners and urban planners. All of them are reflecting on how we can be more fully alive in this context of participating in a universe story.Connect deeply with these materials and more via the Journey of the Universe: A Story for Our Times Specialization, a series of Massive Online Open Courses hosted by Coursera and created by Yale.To receive up to date announcements on new podcasts and Journey community offerings, subscribe to our newsletter.

Music can bring us into new, profound kinds of awareness. Composer and classical guitarist Sam Guarnaccia is doing his part. We talk about his new musical work that calls on orchestra, chorus, and soloists to celebrate the evolving universe we all share. I've heard Sam's Emergent Universe Oratorio—it's lush and evocative and includes praise for life forms and forces you don't often hear about in concert halls, like cell membranes, tree roots, and gravity. There are selections from Sam's Emergent Universe Oratorio in this episode. He and I talk about stuff like: -The role music plays in heightening our awareness -How this new Universe Story differs from indigenous stories -Sam's religious background and how he's oriented now -What "emergence" is and why it rocks -Humanity's fatal flaw -Slime molds and why I want Sam to put them back in the oratorio. Some of the people we mention in this episode are Buddhist and systems scholar and writer Joanna Macy; cultural historian Thomas Berry and mathematical cosmologist Brian Swimme, who wrote The Universe Story and other related works; Mary Evelyn Tucker, a religious scholar at Yale University who worked with Thomas Berry (She and Brian Swimme produced the film Journey of the Universe); and Ursula Goodenough, cell biologist, writer, and professor of biology at Washington University. Here's information on the June 2017 premiere of the oratorio in Cleveland, and Sam Guarnaccia's other works. Awakening "We are beings In whom the universe Shivers in wonder at itself — The space where earth dreams." Brian Thomas Swimme, Mary Evelyn Tucker Gravity's Law How surely gravity's law, Strong as an ocean current, Takes hold of even the smallest thing And pulls it toward the heart of the world. Each thing — Each stone, blossom, child — Is held in place. Only we, in our arrogance, Push out beyond what we each belong to For some empty freedom. If we surrendered To earth's intelligence We could rise up rooted, like trees. Instead we entangle ourselves In knots of our own making. And struggle, lonely and confused. So, like children, we begin again To learn from the things, Because they are in God's heart; They have never left him. This is what the things can teach us: To fall, patiently to trust our heaviness. Even a bird has to do that Before it can fly. Rainer Maria Rilke Translated by Joanna Macy and Anita Barrows
A flourishing garden in dumpsters; a beehive to show how communities work; children learning their "cosmic address" by growing carrots. Inspired by the Universe Story of evolution, Jane Riddiford and Rod Sugden of Global Generation are helping to shape London's busiest construction zone. Jane and Rod, staff and volunteers are catalyzing a community with opportunities to garden, eat, and learn together. Here, construction workers, local families, refugees, Muslim immigrant kids, and office workers connect with each other and with natural rhythms still pulsing under the concrete. Some ideas we talk about: -The Universe Story as a source of values -How modern people can develop a sense of being indigenous -How we can have creative, functional cities that allow people to be different -Living in three levels of history: cultural history, our contributions to the future, and our cosmic history -How a garden is a 3D metaphor for something coming from nothing -A Maori myth in London—The Three Baskets of Knowledge: I, We, and the Planet -What is ritual? -The work of GG alumni: young Muslims connecting the environment with their spirituality and enlisting nature as a model of diverse communities Music in this episode is "Bathed in Fine Dust," by Andy G. Cohen. Used through a Creative Commons license.
Whether we plunder the Earth or participate in it depends on deep notions of who we are. Jennifer Morgan of the Deep Time Journey Network says in Part Two of our conversation about the Universe Story, "What's going on every single second is so stunning that if we were truly present to it, we would fall down on our knees and kiss the ground." While she admits most of us aren't able to maintain that presence through our day-to-day lives, learning how our Earth creates and functions can help us live them. That kind of awareness invites us to live "mythical lives." Those quiet invitations are everywhere. As Jennifer explains, the Universe shows us how to handle crisis, in ways that mirror the lessons mythical heroes learn on their journeys: when you've come undone, cooperate—maybe with someone or something unexpected—and create something new. It happens on this planet all the time, despite dominant ideas that Nature works only through survival of the fittest, or that "red in tooth and claw" thing. "Life did not take over the globe by combat, but by networking," wrote the late, great biologist Lynn Margulis, who pioneered the concept of endosymbiosis and wrote about it with her son and collaborator, writer Dorion Sagan. Jennifer and I also talk about how to move past feelings of insignificance when considering a vast Universe, about ritual, the importance of Nature to children (and eating dirt), and about ideas of the divine. Jennifer's own religious background is fascinating: her anti-Christian grandmother was regularly welcomed into American Indian ceremonies; her Methodist organist mom turned churchgoers on to lava lamps. Her own path included converting to Catholicism (although some nuns tried to talk her out of it), Celtic spiritual ideas, and more… Music in this episode is "Ritual 13" by Jason Leonard, used via a Creative Commons license. David Loy is a professor, writer, and Zen teacher. He is especially concerned about social and ecological issues, and believes there is an important parallel between what Buddhism says about our personal predicament and our collective predicament today in relation to the rest of the biosphere. In the second part of the keynote address David gave at the 2013 Buddhist Geeks Conference, he argues that our species needs an evolution of our cultural story if we are to survive the many changes we face. By understanding we are part of the ecosphere rather than apart from it, David hopes humanity can wake up enough to become a collective bodhisattva of the biosphere. This is part two of a two part series. Listen to part one: The Cosmos Wakes Up. David Loy is a professor, writer, and Zen teacher in the Sanbo Kyodan tradition of Japanese Zen Buddhism. He lectures nationally and internationally on various topics, focusing primarily on the encounter between Buddhism and modernity: what each can learn from the other. In the first part of the keynote address David gave at the 2013 Buddhist Geeks Conference, he presents a social narrative that features a living Cosmos waking up to itself. He explains how humanity needs to create a new global story as an alternative to some of our most common cultural stories, like Social Darwinism. This is part one of a two part series.
