This expanded awareness, integrating science and spirituality, can lead to a more harmonious and responsible relationship with Earth and its inhabitants. Given that it can be difficult to differentiate between themes like education for sustainable development, global citizenship, and peace education, Bourn advocates for understanding the context and how the people using these terms define them. Dr. Bourn believes that higher education educators and administrators need to take the lead to create a pedagogy of hope to address the anger and anxiety students feel about environmental issues. Rather than viewing key topics like sustainability and decolonization simply as items to check off on a to-do list, Dr. Bourn believes higher education administrators should focus on creating spaces for dialogue about them. While there are no quick fixes or ready-made toolkits to remedy these issues, the Earth Charter can be used as an ethical framework to provide guidance.

In the episode, author, social scientist, and sustainability practitioner, Thomas Legrand speaks with Mirian Vilela about his new book, The Politics of Being, and his work with the UNDP Conscious Food Systems Alliance. Legrand believes that we must move away from a development model based on economic growth and instead to one that ties directly into the Earth Charter's idea of “being more, not having more,” an idea he sees as very important but has of yet been mostly ignored. He sees an answer to this in reorganizing our society and politics to focus on helping individuals realize fulfillment through wellbeing, rather than emphasizing competition, status, wealth, and consumption. Legrand discusses some concrete examples of achieving this shift toward an economy of being in which everyone's basic needs are met. He proposes policies that emphasize secure attachment between parents and children by supporting childcare and parental leave. He also sees providing a universal basic income and healthcare as a way to allow people more time to achieve wellbeing and fulfillment through means other than work. He also emphasizes the importance of the rights of nature, restorative justice, moving from a global economy to local economies, and the need for all of these ideas to be incorporated into the education system and national policies.

In this conversation she reflects on the shift that needs to take place towards Earth Law and Rights of Nature, and on what it means: giving nature legal rights in the same way that humans have legal rights so that it must be legally protected. She shares the examples of both Ecuador and Bolivia that have recognized the Rights of Nature in their constitution, and on a smaller scale, rights can be given to individual parts of an ecosystem like a river or forest. She comments on the work of The Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature (GARN), a global organization dedicated to the universal adoption and implementation of legal protection for the Rights of Nature, and on how she sees the relationship between law, economics, education, and ethics. In this episode, Mirian Vilela talks with Dr. Lisa Miller about the role of spirituality in mental and emotional health, the importance of spirituality in education, and the connections between her work and the Earth Charter. Dr. Miller explains that while religion is completely environmentally and culturally transmitted, we are born with an innate physical capacity for spirituality. She emphasizes that religion is not a requirement to fulfill this capacity for a transcendent relationship, but that this connection to a whole can be experienced through a god, the universe, ancestors, or another higher power.  However, this innate spirituality is being socialized out of children which she believes is resulting in many of the emotional and mental health problems in today's societies. In response to this, Dr. Miller created the Collaborative for Spirituality in Education to develop spaces for spirituality in K-12 schools. She believes that the most important work for a parent, teacher, or caregiver is to strengthen children's spiritual form by modeling this behavior. To foster spiritual growth, parents must both “walk the walk” and “talk the talk” equally. In her book, The Awakened Brain, Dr. Miller discusses the need for awakened awareness. An obstacle to this is the transactional, achievement-oriented mindset that focuses on attaining more money, prestige, and material wealth. Instead, we must focus on the “deep in-and-of-itself of living”, spiritual value, and quality of life. Counterintuitively, this will lead to more outward success. Dr. Miller sees the connection between her work and that of the Earth Charter because of the focus on the interconnectedness and oneness with the environmental, spiritual, social, and political. Her work at the Spirituality Mind Body Institute identifies a need for a spiritual voice in environmental protection and education. In Principle 14, the Earth Charter emphasizes the importance of moral and spiritual education which parallels her work with the Collaborative for Spirituality in Education.  Finally, both the Earth Charter and Dr. Miller recognize the importance of a transcendent relationship through our connection to the greater whole. Its partner enterprise, Himalayan Rocket Stove (HRS), has developed the technology behind this solution. While anchoring the programs at SCF, she doubles up as a Business Consultant at HRS, handling essential business functions and creating opportunities to apply efficient heating and cooking solutions to real-world problems. As a result, Nitisha can integrate clean energy solutions to a diverse set of community-based users at a national level. Both organizations' combined objective is to create efficient, high-impact, low-cost heating and cooking solutions at various acceptable price points, including our' zero cost' cookstove solution. Since 2017, SCF has conducted field training programs in over 11 Indian states reaching out to more than 2000 community participants. Thus, the organization has simultaneously pivoted itself in a facilitator's mode to identify gaps within the clean cooking sector from the developer's end and the participative communities' perspective. In line with Nitisha's endeavor to the sector, she is honored to be a part of the inaugural mentorship program – Women in Clean Cooking instituted by Global Alliance in Clean Cooking, SEforAll, and GWNET for Asian and African nations. She is also a proud member of SAWIE (South Asian Women in Energy), which has been constituted as a platform for women to form a collaborative and strategic approach towards reaching gender equality goals and building solid pillars across the energy sector Before Nitisha stepped into the clean energy development sector, she accumulated over 17 years of experience in retail brand communications, public relations, business development, and social media marketing with brands like Volkswagen, Skoda, Marico, and Lintas. But her love for the mountains and outdoor adventures lured her to a chance interaction with an Australian eco innovator, Russell Collins (Founder of Himalayan Rocket Stove), and she quit her corporate life at Volkswagen India and found inspiration to set up SCF. Nitisha studied Sustainable Development and Solutions from Columbia University, Earth Institute, to bring academic relevance to her work. In addition, she completed the certification program in Education in Sustainable Development from United Nations, Earth Charter International in collaboration with Peace University, Costa Rica, in 2018. Being a patron and endorser of The Earth Charter, Nitisha has continued her learning journey with the charter and completed a Business and Ethical Leadership for Sustainability program as a scholarship participant in 2020. Extremely passionate about outdoor adventure, Nitisha started 'Children of Tribe' an outdoor learning experience and introduction to sustainable solutions for young city kids based on the ideology of Nature as a third parent. Before the pandemic, she conducted curated program over the weekends, allowing children to experience Nature by getting themselves fully immersed in it. This work has been featured in Condenast Traveller India's September 2020 issue. Avid trekker and traveler but based in Mumbai/ Karjat, she has her bags packed all the time, and while on various assignments for the Foundation, she loves taking pictures, sharing meals on clean chulahs, and writing about her experiences in the form of travelogues. Nitisha's digitally published articles can be found on www.travelpurist.com. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Mother, Author, Researcher ‘What is happening behind the curtain?' The UN Agendas, the World Economic Forum - Your Future? Giving a wider understanding of the issues facing us today, both in NZ and globally. Worth your while to listen to the whole interview. Author of ‘We are Revolting' and her new book just out ‘Under the Shadow', Antoinette lays the groundwork of her research as to what is happening on a global scale. She says she is a big picture person.  The fact that over the years, our NZ Governments, both left and right have signed us on to the United Nations Agenda21 and Agenda23 that have slipped through without there being a public discourse or debate and education of ‘we the people' as to what does this all translate into. Why the silence and why have our elected representatives not mentioned this to their constituents? Especially as this all started back in 1992. Then there is the question of what's the game plan being acted out under cover of the Covid crisis? Where and where does the World Economic Forum from Davos in Switzerland put the ‘Great Reset' in place. Where the cashless society comes into being, that by 2030 ‘we will own nothing and we will be happy' - how about - full of Joy!  Note, that both our Prime Minister and our Deputy Prime Minister have attended the World Economic Forum in Switzerland. Yet a quietened NZ MSM, ‘soothed with ample funding' from our Government discreetly looks the other way.    This is what happened - the Fourth Estate (your Media) have remained silent and tight lipped.  www.AntoinetteJames.com   With a new book just out: UNDER THE SHADOW: Agenda 21 in New Zealand New Zealand National and Labour governments have collaborated in binding the country to UN goals. National Prime Minister Jim Bolger signed Agenda 21 in 1992, without democratic debate! Labour Prime Minister Helen Clark rolled-out NCEA underpinned with UN Common Core Curriculum goals in the early 2000s, without democratic debate! National Prime Minister John Key signed Agenda 2030 in 2015, without democratic debate! Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern authored New Zealand's first Voluntary National Review 2019: An audit of the country's progress and commitment to UN 2030 dictatorship, without democratic debate! Every New Zealander's life is going to change for the worse. UNDER THE SHADOW is a 314-page exposé of Agenda 21/2030 outcomes and projections in New Zealand. This publication has over 300 quotes and citations from many documents, publications, speeches and statements. Under the Shadow gives the Agenda backstory, names the architects, explains the ideology and exposes the elites main driving force. Copies of UNDER THE SHADOW can be purchased on AMAZON or for New Zealand postal addresses, directly from the author - $35 plus P&P Having presented this info at many public meetings last year, I found the tree metaphor became an easy way to untangle while putting a handle on the very historic and complicated UN tiptoe to Agenda 2030.  This is the contents to give you a feel to what is covered - TIMBER!........................................................293   Final Word………………………………………………..303 Of course COVID, WEF, AI all fit into the jigsaw puzzle of secrecy and word trickery. I am a "big picture" commentator. Understanding the big picture makes it easier to understand the incremental steps by our gov and councils to ultimate end-game of communism that will best be described as a 'technocratic oligarchical scientific dictatorship'. Antoinette has also written another book in 2019 called WE ARE REVOLTING: ‘A Red Pill Read'  Paperback – January 4, 2019 · Kindle $14.99 Read with Our Free App · Paperback $35.26.  Antoinette states that in 2019 the Prime Minister of NZ wrote NZ's First Voluntary National Review to the United Nations - which is basically an audit of NZ and saying to the UN bosses where we are at, as a country. She says that it has all the basic feel good language - but behind that are ‘word definitions' - and that there is a lot of word trickery going on. Shared Responsibility and Public Private  - what do these words really mean? That key words are frequently placed in this Agenda's schedule - words that give us the ‘feel good vibe' such as ‘wellbeing' and the question is posited what does the word ‘wellbeing' translate to for the elite at the top of the UN, plus bankers and movers and shakers? What does ‘wellbeing' mean to the elite at the top of the pyramid of power? Have a listen - because what Antoinette says is very important for us all to take in. From Tims point of view as the interviewer  - I did not want to get in and argue points - I was instead offering a platform that is based on Freedom of Expression - and I know that we are being limited as time passes. Whereas as Antionette says, as a Christian that we need to be taking care of human life. That we are sacred beings - (Tim believes we are souls inhabiting bodies - (see his previous interviews about souls and near death and out of the body  experiences.) Note that in most cases Atheists refuse to debate this). Antoinette states that we are in the decade of eco restoration and that is a very good thing in Tims estimation - however it's all about how the top of the ‘pyramid of power' is going about doing this. So this is a very important point to understand - we need both - but how the Agenda's are being promulgated is that the Governments are making no effort to educate the public. There is no use of the Fourth Estate to educate humanity of what is the issue and what is at stake here. There is a balance … we have to take in the precautionary principle in situations - like the non growing of Genetically Engineered  food in NZ  - But, when it comes to Covid the authorities are not following this themselves. Because in NZ for example, the Pfizer injection has not been passed as safe by the FDA and that it is still in an ‘experimental phase' as per Med Safe here in NZ. so there is a huge in-congruence with how our elected servants are governing us - some will say ‘ruling us'. The current Government's understanding of Agenda21 according to Antoinette is that their adherence to Agenda21 is to the restoration of the environment as it was before man walked on our planet. This is seen as going too far - too fast - especially with 7.8 billion beings that need water, feeding, housing, health and education - etc. Antoinette mentions Rosa Koire on NZer Vinny Eastwoods show. link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MPKl1yskKs    In this interview Antoinette also mentions:  Bill and Melinda Gates - at the Goal Keepers Conference 2019 - where our Prime Minister commits NZ to the Agenda21 Goals.   That at present NZ is now locking away significant natural areas … But, this is not being done with open transparent, local, and district participation of the land owners and the farming or agricultural community. It is being imposed. This interview talks about top down control coming across NZ's rural sector - South Waikato for instance has been given a plan to control its water - (and we need plans to clean up our water) - however rural people are not being kept in the loop and the authorities are forcing the issue by initiating local bylaws etc without having open discussions with the locals.  This is coming from the top down. This is not localised democracy. Antoinette - stresses that Local Government is not doing the work around having meetings with local rural residents or local town hall meetings and giving people a heads up on what it would like to do or what is actually going on. It all appears to - being put in place and that everyone in the community just has to comply. Like - it's being forced upon the people. The rural sector is about to be managed … where previously in a localised community district or region - ‘we the people' governed ourselves by democratic principles. However this does not appear to be happening.  What we hear in this interview is that we are being ‘Ruled by an elite' - that sees us in many ways as useless eaters and that we do not have a soul … this is why management of the future is being set up - because in many ways we as a society have not been alert and have let our local democratic system deteriorate, by not voting - to such a degree that ‘others' have stepped in and in many ways subtly hijacked the process.  This Interview includes: The Fabian Society and the connection to the Royal Society … Article 61 and the Nuremberg code  He Whakaputanga. The flying of the 1835 Flag, when 34 Maori Chiefs came together to re-emphasise that they were independent.  Antoinette says she raises this flag at her home. This interview covers a vast number of issues that have not been given any coverage or discourse in NZ. Once we in this country were very keen on participating in our young democracy. However, you can see how the voter turnout at local government elections has fallen dramatically over the last 50 years and it is at this level that change is being forced upon us, because there are fewer checks and balances.  Antoinette as a mother and someone who has witnessed the decline in all areas of family, education, health and community life over the decades has decided to make a stand. She has to be acknowledged and empowered for standing up to a system that has lost its way and or been infiltrated. Well worth grappling with the subject matter she brings to us all. Because we are in the grips of and irregular warfare. Mentioned in this interview is the link between 5G and Covid. https://www.rfglobalnet.com/doc/fixed-wireless-communications-at-60ghz-unique-0001 https://transition.fcc.gov/Bureaus/Engineering_Technology/Documents/bulletins/oet70/oet70a.pdf Also, that there is in place a new Nuremberg Trial coming due to the unlawful acts of Government and Health officials around Covid. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJXCG3tXwj4     Dr Reiner Fuellmich    https://reesereport.com/    - 4 minute videos to get the point across. There is an axiom that states - The means justifies the ends, not the ends justifies the means.  You will find that both Facists and Communists will go with ‘the ends justifying the end' - whilst those who believe in virtue and principled morality - will always go with - ‘the means justifying the end.'  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ZC0NOljRWQ&t=282s     Vox  2014   Police State Contagion:   NOTES: Tim mentions that in 1992 at the Rio UN Conference in Brazil, that 192 Nations signed up to Agenda 21 - Under the auspices of George Herbert Bush - who as the Head of the CIA spent 12 years in the Whitehouse - 8 years as Vice President and 4 years as President. With his son George W Bush having another 8 years as President in the Whitehouse. What were these insiders doing during this time? www.AntoinetteJames.com

"Jannotta crafts an original, new jazz work that keeps things moving forward and interesting."- Chris Spector"Her writing offers an interesting perspective."- Sarah Ellen HughesThank you for dropping by my website. I hope you will take a look around and check out the music and the projects that have become the fabric of my life.To introduce myself . . .My life as a performer came very early as often happens with little girls. I started dancing at the age of 4. And I never stopped. I found the violin at the age of 9, and at 14, I fell in love with acting. My first “gig” at 15 was as a chorus dancer in a production of “South Pacific” at the Burbank Starlite Bowl in Los Angeles, where I'm from. I studied dancing throughout my life, studied acting from the age of 15, and began singing when I was in college because I needed a second instrument for my music major. I studied ballet with Swiss Ballet Master Dora Krannig and modern jazz with choreographer Joe Bennet. I've had a million teachers but these two were special. Dora taught me to breathe and Joe loved Jazz. I've studied with a lot of acting teachers as well but my favorites were radio star Lurene Tuttle, Gordon Hunt, and the amazingly introspective Susan Batson. But my singing teachers were few because I only really committed to one couple: Lee and Sally Sweetland, themselves studio singers. Thanks to them I have a technique that will never die. During my time of study and day jobs, I also attended Banff Center School of Fine Arts in Alberta, Canada, on a partial scholarship for musical theater. I won't mention how many odd jobs I had in order to get by, however being a door-to-door sandwich peddler and a cocktail waitress in a jazz dive were particular stand-outs. My paid acting gigs were few and my non-paid theater gigs were many. However, I was lucky enough to have a year's contract with the Los Angeles Shakespeare Festival where we did Children's Theater during the school year and Shakespeare in the Park during the summer. One of the best performances I ever had as an actress was with the Festival. Because we were partially funded by the City of Los Angeles, we had to take our Children's Improv Show to Terminal Island Maximum Security Prison because the Mayor's Office asked us to. We think the Mayor's Office thought we were taking Shakespeare to the inmates but our Shakespeare play wasn't ready yet. We were stuck with the improv show. Of course we had to change it up a little bit from children to felons. It was scary, it was risky, it was the greatest night I've ever had in the theater, and we got a standing ovation. After 22 years of the acting struggle, a funny thing happened. I sat in with a piano player at a Los Angeles restaurant and suddenly I had my first $50 jazz gig. No muss, no fuss. Just music. So I switched from acting to singing, took another day job, sang only jazz, and studied Charlie Parker solos. I also started writing. My 1st album, “Just Jazz” was released in 1996 when I began traveling to Europe to sing. It was in Switzerland that I landed distribution for this CD with TCB Music, The Montreux Jazz Label. My 2nd album, “Jazz at the Ranch,” also distributed by TCB, was a live concert performance at a National Park in the Santa Monica Mountains, a concert I gave once a year for 10 years. That album was released in 2001. I also produced the Back to Blues & Jazz Concert during this time as a benefit for environmental causes. My 3rd album, “Is It Magic?” put me on the arts grants super highway. The City of Ventura, where I now live, awarded me a Cultural Arts Fellowship in 2008, which partially funded this project. It also gave me the chance to write most of the music. In 2010, I received my 2nd arts grant from the Ventura County Arts Council: an Artist in the Community Partnership Grant. I partnered with a local homeless shelter and created a live performance piece entitled “Voices of the Homeless,” starring members of the homeless community and backed up musically by jazz improvisers listening to their stories. I then made a documentary about that performance, which was awarded the Earth Charter and the Arts Award in 2012 for activism through the arts. This leads me to my current project, “My Little Heart, Ruthie,” which had been sitting on the shelf since 1994. It is a story rhyme with music and illustrations, a little healing story for adults and kids. It will become a picture book in both hard cover and E-Book format. It also has an accompanying CD, which contains my narration (thank you Children's Theater) and jazz inspired musical suite (thank you Jazz and music theory), and will be available as both a physical CD and a digital download. What is biochar? How can you use it? Should you make it yourself? How can it build community? Find out in my interview with Charmaster, Tony C. Saladino. Listen here or wherever you listen to podcasts - Stitcher, Apple, Google, Spotify Tony C. Saladino is a Charmaster, Biochar Educator, Founder and Guide for ECO-Tours of Wisconsin, Inc. As a participant in the 2020 International Climate Challenge, he met his goal of creating his weight in char and turning that into over half a ton of biochar, enough to enrich a dozen 4X10 foot beds to a depth of six inches, forever! He also taught a dozen more biochar classes so that more people would be able to do the same, cheaply and efficiently. https://www.climateactionchallenge.net In 1987, Saladino rode his bicycle around all five Great Lakes, teaching people in person, through TV, radio and print publications how to live lightly on the planet and experience a higher quality of life at the same time. Over ten million residents of the Great Lakes Basin heard him speak or read about his trip. Tony committed his life to "helping heal the rift between humankind and nature" as a child and has helped plant over 60,000 native trees and hundreds of thousands of native perennial food and medicinal plants across Northeast Wisconsin as an adult. He leads plant-ins, seed collection and dispersal tours, biochar classes, permaculture garden tours, canoe and bicycle trips across the region. He also advocates for the Earth Charter, www.earthcharter.org, which encourages people to utilize information from Environmental Working Group, www.ewg.org especially their Skin-Deep database of personal care products and their zip code specific water quality database. The focus on the six steps required to make biochar will help people understand how-to double crop production, sequester carbon, protect water quality, reduce the need for irrigation and fertilization by half, all while providing a host of environmental benefits. He will help people decide if they are better served by making their own biochar or purchasing it and for those who decide to buy, how to tell if the char you are buying is worth the investment. Six steps required to transform dry woody material into biochar: Make it by getting it to glow, without air Micronize it to bits 2mm or less. Moisten that material to as wet as a wrung-out sponge. Add Minerals Add Microbes Let it mature, stirring several times a day and keeping the moisture steady. Saladino and his group, are currently working to secure funding for an 80-acre parcel that will not only serve as a home base for ECO-Tours but allow guests to come and learn the principles of sustainability by doing. In a living laboratory, that builds community through diversity. The property will only be available for Leave No Trace Camping and classes in and about nature which helps guests understand and create more sustainable lifestyles. Quick Overview Dr. Hopkins shares his experience in drafting Chapter 36 of Agenda 21 towards the 1992 Rio Summit. He shares a unique story, which reveals the significance of education towards a sustainable future. Such significance is renewed and exemplified in SDG4, which constitutes a crucial means of implementing all sixteen other goals. Mr. Hopkins points out that indigenous worldviews should not be neglected. Instead, we should engage them, learn about them, and find appropriate ways to incorporate them for quality education. Since education does not serve a single purpose, various “educations” are needed. Values and ethics that distinguish the human civilization – the core element in the common journey of Mr. Hopkins and the Earth Charter – should be passed on through education and for generations to live by.

We need to see ourselves as having a dual citizenship in our nature as well as our political system. Dr. Orr urges educators to adapt all curricula to sustainability. In turn, he has adapted the architecture of education to the pedagogy or learning of environmental sustainability. He stressed that sustainability is not just to be seen as an abstraction, but needs to be built into the place in which students learn about sustainability. Dr. Orr reviews offers additional advice based on the books he has written and edited. Far too often, we perceive the world as an object for our personal use, whereas our happiness lies in interconnectivity. Dr. Hathaway's elaboration on ecological perception provides guidance for us to connect with nature through experience. The key factors include gratitude, awe, attention, imagination, and interaction. On ethics, Dr. Hathaway points out that with respect and care at its core, the Earth Charter has, as much as a document can, communicated both the experience of the world and what ethics means in practical terms.

He attaches great importance to the invisible word “for” in the acronym “ESD,” and distinguishes “ESD” (Education for Sustainable Development) from “SDE” (Sustainable Development Education). When comparing Education for Sustainable Development with conventional education, Mr. Sarabhai highlights three features of the former: integration, critical thinking, and observation. In the same vein, the Earth Charter presents a holistic view, evokes consciousness, and calls for ethical thinking in addition to critical thinking. From an alternative perspective, the Earth Charter echoes Gandhian thinking as they both question human lifestyles and how societies are organised and managed. He comments on the linkages between Gandhi's philosophy and the Earth Charter, drawing from the publication he was involved in putting together: Earth Charter & Gandhi – Towards a Sustainable World (2010).

He also gives an account of the impactful experiences he had with nature and his special interest in birds. He reflects on how helpful it was for his work with the drafting process of the Earth Charter, the fact that he spent over 30 years studying philosophy and world religion. Over the years, he increasingly realized that the spiritual life involves the quality of one's relationship with oneself, with other persons, with the larger world of nature, and with the great mystery of the universe. He explains what faith means for him and reflects on his experience during the Earth Charter drafting process, which involved listening intently to people from various cultures and fields of knowledge and trying to understand different perspectives. He shares that he became involved in the Earth Charter Initiative due to his interest in ethics and spiritual values. 2. The Origins of the Earth Charter Quick Overview                                                              Professor Rockefeller talks about the origins of the Earth Charter; the World Charter for Nature and its focus on respect for nature; and the Brundtland Commission Report and its emphasis on the moral responsibility to future generations. He shares how IUCN's second version of the World Conservation Strategy stands as a pioneer document addressing environmental ethics from an Earth perspective. The Earth Charter, according to Professor Rockefeller, presents an integrated social, economic, environmental, ethical, and spiritual vision concisely formulated for humanity. 3. Reflections on Some Earth Charter Principles Quick Overview Every word in the Earth Charter has been carefully chosen upon extensive consultation and intensive deliberation. Professor Rockefeller shares a few stories behind some Earth Charter ideas and principles, such as “Earth” rather than “the Earth,” “the earth,” or “Nature,” and “equitable distribution of wealth” rather than “redistribution of wealth,” among others. He also relates the argument among different groups over the word “compassion,” and over the concept of “intrinsic value,” and how they eventually reached a consensus, sometimes just because of a flash of inspiration. Exceptionally, the case of reproductive health just demonstrates that the Earth Charter does not have to take a position on every single matter for a greater consensus to be built. He reflects on the concept of reverence for life, emphasized by Albert Schweitzer, and how it is weaved in the Earth Charter. He reflects on why the concepts of peace and nonviolence were part of the Earth Charter. Through collaborative work led by the University, Regenerate Costa Rica is working across bio-regions on site-based, holistic approaches to produce 3 key outcomes: high carbon capture in soils, increases in biodiversity, and improvements in human wellbeing. Regenerating land through natural and assisted processes is essential to this work, along with broader regeneration of the economy, politics and culture. And in the broader global agenda, they are part of the growing Regenerative Communities Network, hosted by the Capital Institute. All that harks back to my very first podcast guest, the founder of that Institute. The ultimate goal? Reverse the high risk associated with having trespassed a number of planetary boundaries, to assure the safe operating space for humanity. The early successes, willingness to change among farmers and ranchers, and the trajectory of the project and broader regenerative networks are wonderfully inspiring. Out of the current crisis of COVID-19, and the wider inter-related set of crises we've been bringing upon ourselves, the spirit of regeneration is alive. Eduard has presented to organisations such as the World Meteorological Organization, the Latin American Parliament, the Parliamentary Confederation of the Americas, The Earth Charter, IUCN, national and provincial legislatures. And he has worked as a consultant for the World Bank, UN, IUCN, governments and various other organizations. This episode was recorded on 25 March 2020. The Earth Charter is an international declaration of fundamental values and principles for building a just, sustainable, and peaceful global society in the 21st century. It "seeks to inspire in all peoples a sense of global interdependence and shared responsibility for the well-being of the human family, the greater community of life, and future generations. The four pillars and sixteen principles of the Earth Charter are: I. Respect and Care for the Community of Life 1. Respect Earth and life in all its diversity. 2. Care for the community of life with understanding, compassion and love. 3. Build democratic societies that are just, participatory, sustainable and peaceful. 4. Secure Earth's bounty and beauty for present and future generations. II. Ecological Integrity 5. Protect and restore the integrity of Earth's ecological systems, with special concern for biological diversity and the natural processes that sustain life. 6. Prevent harm as the best method of environmental protection and, when knowledge is limited, apply a precautionary approach. 7. Adopt patterns of production, consumption and reproduction that safeguard Earth's regenerative capacities, human rights and community well-being. 8. Advance the study of ecological sustainability and promote the open exchange and wide application of the knowledge acquired. III. Social and Economic Justice 9. Eradicate poverty as an ethical, social and environmental imperative. 10. Ensure that economic activities and institutions at all levels promote human development in an equitable and sustainable manner. 11. Affirm gender equality and equity as prerequisites to sustainable development and ensure universal access to education, health care and economic opportunity. 12. Uphold the right of all, without discrimination, to a natural and social environment supportive of human dignity, bodily health and spiritual well-being, with special attention to the rights of indigenous peoples and minorities. IV. Democracy, Nonviolence, and Peace 13. Strengthen democratic institutions at all levels, and provide transparency and accountability in governance, inclusive participation in decision-making, and access to justice. 14. Integrate into formal education and life-long learning the knowledge, values and skills needed for a sustainable way of life. 15. Treat all living beings with respect and consideration. 16. Promote a culture of tolerance, nonviolence and peace. Clem is a former Australian state politician and was a member of the Parliament of Queensland from 1983 to 1998. WHAT IS THE EARTH CHARTER? The Earth Charter is an ethical framework for building a just, sustainable, and peaceful global society during this 21st century. It seeks to inspire in all people a new sense of global interdependence and shared responsibility for the well-being of the whole human family, the greater community of life, and future generations. It is a vision of hope and a call to action. The Earth Charter is an international declaration of fundamental values and principles considered useful by its supporters for building a just, sustainable, and peaceful global society in the 21st century. Created by a global consultation process, and endorsed by organizations representing millions of people, the Charter "seeks to inspire in all peoples a sense of global interdependence and shared responsibility for the well-being of the human family, the greater community of life, and future generations." It calls upon humanity to help create a global partnership at a critical juncture in history. The Earth Charter's ethical vision proposes that environmental protection, human rights, equitable human development, and peace are interdependent and indivisible. The Charter attempts to provide a new framework for thinking about and addressing these issues. How do we integrate world citizens into a grassroots movement to bring this into being? Can the people of the Earth promote this idea so as to not lose power to the overriding corporate global resource grab that is ubiquitous and increasing? With the TPPA the Transpacific Partnership Agreement and the TTIP Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership being foisted upon many countries in their respective regions, is the  Earth Charter robust enough to ensure that humanity will be able to have a just and fair future? We are now also deeply embedded in an era of the Security State of Global Proportions how is this going to affect the Charter?    As we near 2020, we are seeing that the Charter may need some revising and that we as a humanity have to go beyond ecological sustainability and repurpose how we respond to the rapidly increasing ecological, economic and societal challenges that are all presently converging. Regeneration of the environment has to be a priority of the highest order, as well as looking deeply at the particulates in the air, water and food chain. With geoengineering being played with, what are the repercussions in our fast altering world, where democracy is now being seen as becoming very poorly represented and even problematic? (the two party electoral system in the USA and the UK) Whilst big world media becomes more omnipresent, globally yet concentrated in fewer and fewer hands.   Environmental Modification Convention   There is a need to give more teeth to enforce the rule of law on countries that break these conventions, especially ENMOD.   The Environmental Modification Convention (ENMOD), formally the Convention on the Prohibition of Military or Any Other Hostile Use of Environmental Modification Techniques is an international treaty prohibiting the military or other hostile use of environmental modification techniques having widespread, long-lasting or severe effects. It opened for signature on 18 May 1977 in Geneva and entered into force on 5 October 1978. The Convention bans weather warfare, which is the use of weather modification techniques for the purposes of inducing damage or destruction. The Convention on Biological Diversity of 2010 would also ban some forms of weather modification or geoengineering. Yes, we definitely need regulation to stop unbridled degradation of the earth’s resources, because as most people know the corporate world’s only aim is to make a profit for shareholders. With corporate ‘responsibility’ seen with increasing suspicion we need to have this discussion of how we justly care for the 7.5 billion human inhabitants and the future of our biosphere especially children of today and tomorrow.      This is a repeat of an interview broadcast in 2006 and no doubt this important subject needs to be addressed far more in the public arena - now - 10 years after broadcast. http://earthcharter.org
