We are excited to have Sue Cunningham, who is acclaimed by Dan Allender as the officially-unofficial Poet Laureate of the Allender Center, back with us. In this discussion, we're taking on the term "poiesis," which comes from the Greek word "to make" and is related to "poetry." At the Allender Center, we believe that writing and telling your story is an essential part of the process of understanding and processing traumatic experiences. We explore how poetry relates to this process in our conversation with Sue Cunningham, Dan Allender, and Rachael Clinton Chen. They also discuss the effects of the creative process on the brain and the power of using descriptive language to make meaning. We encourage you, our listeners, to be bold this week and try writing some poetry to see what insights you can gain from the experience. Sue invites us: “Will you have the courage to just say one true thing? And whether it's like you speak it and I'll write it down for you and then give it to you, or you scribble it in a journal or you write it on the back of a napkin, anything to say, it's honoring, you matter. You exist.”

This book was an outcome of her doctoral work in Social Ecology. Her newest book is "A Poiesis of the Creative Cosmos: Celebrating Her within PaGaian Sacred Ceremony," which synthesizes much of her work over the years. On today's episode we discuss:* Glenys' spiritual background, including her conversion to Catholicism in her teens, as well as her growing disillusionment with Christianity*  The "a-ha" moment that occurred when she realized, pregnant and unmarried, that knowing a female deity would allow her to view her situation without shame* What "PaGaian cosmology" means, including how it combines pagan spirituality with scientific theory to give us a new way to recognize and honor Her (the Goddess) as creative life force* Why it's important that we recognize the inherent power in language and the naming of things and life experiences  * How honoring the equinoxes, solstice and cross-quarter days found on the pagan Wheel of the Year can bring us closer to the Sacred Feminine and provides an opportunity to consciously participate in the creative dance of the cosmosShow Notes If you'd like to know whose ancestral tribal lands you currently reside on, you can look up your address here: https://native-land.ca/My book, “Home to Her: Walking the Transformative Path of the Sacred Feminine,” is now available Womancraft Publishing! In the festival contests Antiphanes won 13 victories, of which 8 were awarded at the small Lenaea festival held in January and 5 at the more impressive Great Dionysia, held in late March. Although he died in Chios, he was buried in Athens, the site of his literary triumphs.Ancient sources attribute to him variously 260 to 365 plays, none of which has survived. He was often quoted by later writers, who preserve more than 330 fragments from plays with 134 titles. An analysis of the fragments and titles shows that the themes of his plays included mythological farce (e.g., Minos and Cyclops), stories about hetairai, highly cultivated courtesans (e.g., Malthace and Melitta), everyday occupations (e.g., Kithara-Player and Doctor), family affairs (e.g., Sisters and Ancestors), and social relations (e.g., Resident Alien and Lover of Thebes). A long fragment of the comedy Poiesis is important for its exposition of the differences between comedy and tragedy. According to this passage, writers of comedy have the more difficult task, since they must invent names and plots for each play, while the tragic poet writes about well-known myths. The Athenian scholar and politician Demetrius of Phaleron composed About Antiphanes, and Dorotheus of Ascalon, a grammarian of the early Roman Empire (1st century AD), also wrote about him. Athenaeus (late 2nd century AD), whose work is the source for many fragments of Antiphanes, praised him for his graceful style. From https://www.britannica.com/biography/Antiphanes. For more information about Antiphanes:Athenaeus, The Deipnosophists: http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Perseus:abo:tlg,0008,001:13“A Line Between Careless and Pensive: More Ancient Words on Drinking”: https://sententiaeantiquae.com/2018/12/30/a-line-between-careless-and-pensive-more-ancient-words-on-drinking/

Have you thought about what kind of games you've been playing, if not then maybe you should?'Finite And Infinite Games' by James P. Carse is somewhat of a philosophy that divides human actions and interactions into two types of games. The finite game is bounded, has fixed rules, is serious and theatrical. The infinite game on the other hand has no end, with constantly changing rules/players and has a more casual feeling.I summarised the book as follows. "This is the type of philosophy I can actually enjoy. Carse's general distinction of finite & infinite seemed to make a lot of intuitive sense to me. There were certainly some strange parts of the book but these only minorly subtracted from my overall impression. This is not a book for everybody but has had an impact on me and questioning what games I'm playing in."I hope you have a fantastic day wherever you are in the world.

Judy, professor of Critical and Cultural Studies at the University of Pittsburgh, about his book Sentient Flesh: Thinking in Disorder, Poiēsis in Black, which was published by Duke University Press in 2020. In Sentient Flesh R. A. Judy takes up freedman Tom Windham's 1937 remark “we should have our liberty 'cause . . . us is human flesh" as a point of departure for an extended meditation on questions of the human, epistemology, and the historical ways in which the black being is understood. Drawing on numerous fields, from literary theory and musicology, to political theory and phenomenology, as well as Greek and Arabic philosophy, Judy engages literary texts and performative practices such as music and dance that express knowledge and conceptions of humanity appositional to those grounding modern racialized capitalism. Operating as critiques of Western humanism, these practices and modes of being-in-the-world—which he theorizes as “thinking in disorder,” or “poiēsis in black”—foreground the irreducible concomitance of flesh, thinking, and personhood. As Judy demonstrates, recognizing this concomitance is central to finding a way past the destructive and dominative force of the ontology of racial capitalism that still holds us in thrall. Britt Edelen is a Ph.D. student in English at Duke University. He focuses on modernism and the relationship(s) between language, philosophy, and literature. Other monthly events include a potluck dinner, a waltz night (often with live music), book club gatherings, a creative writing night, and more..

I first encountered Stephen Levine through his writing. In particular his book, Poiesis: The  Language of Psychology and The Speech of the Soul, which I began reading in the summer of 2004, before I started the Expressive Therapies graduate program at Lesley University. If you have noticed the name of my blog and my podcast, you can see that this book, along with Steve's chapters in the book Principles and Practices of Expressive Therapies, made just a wee bit of an impression on me. While I was at Lesley, Steve was not faculty there, and I only encountered him once in a brief workshop on creative process. I remember thinking that the way he talked reminded me of Christopher Walken. I now know Steve is a Brooklyn boy. Maybe there’s a connection? A quick google search reveals that Christopher Walken grew up worlds apart, in Queens. In any case, Steve’s accomplishments are too numerous to cover here. Briefly though, he is the Paul Celan Chair of Philosopy and Poetics in the Arts, Health, and Society Division at The European Graduate School in Switzerland. He is also the Dean of the Doctoral Program in Expressive Arts there. He along with his wife, Ellen Levine, founded THE CREATE INSTITUTE in Toronto, in 1994. He holds a Ph.D. in philosophy, and another in anthropology. He is a trained psychotherapist and Expressive Arts Therapist. He has authored numerous books, and is a passionate social/political activist. I was both thrilled and terrified when he agreed to be on my podcast. I felt as though I had wandered into a dragon’s den. As it turned out, the dragon was exceptionally kind hearted and down to earth.  In this episode, we cover a lot. Steve shares some of the stories and numerous pearls of wisdom from his poietic life journey. I can't help but feel we only scratched the surface. There are a couple of glitches with the sound, but over all it does not interfere, or matter so much, as we settle into our conversation. There is one point around the 20 minute mark where my audio freaks out and goes into skip mode. You might notice a quality change in the microphones I'm using after that.  I didn't edit this out because I feel like the discussion around this part is an important part of the conversation. So listen in as Steve shares stories on everything from:       -  his involvement with Students for a Democratic Society     -  his thoughts on social political critique     -  the meaning and practice of poiesis     -  therapeutic presence     -  approaching art-making     -  the history of philosophy and Heidegger and more... POIESIS: Interdisciplinary Interventions on Urban Transformation Urban Democracy by Design? Introduction: Poiesis and Cross-Sectoral Work Markus Hipp (Executive Director, BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt) Panelists: Michael Arad (Partner, Handel Architects) Ricky Burdett (Professor of Urban Studies and Director of the Cities and the Urban Age Programme, London School of Economics) Saskia Sasen (Robert S Lynd Professor of Sociology, Columbia University) Richard Sennett (University Professor, New York University and Centennial Visiting Professor, London School of Economics) Chair: Ash Amin (1931 Chair in Geography, University of Cambridge) The Poiesis symposium is the culmination of a three year research project on the making and remaking of cities led by Richard Sennett and Craig Calhoun in partnership with the Herbert Quandt and Gerda Henkel Foundations. Over three days, the international, interdisciplinary, group of scholars and practitioners involved in the project – from architects and filmmakers to physicists, sociologists and lawyers – will be convened by Cambridge geographer Ash Amin to discuss the future city. Combining plenaries, workshops and roundtable discussions, the symposium will debate the salience of reading the city from its physical and cultural infrastructures, the potential of urban democracy 'by design', and the implications of comprehensive urbanism for social thought and political practice.
