Body dysmorphia affects queer men in nuanced ways, and while we can't unpack every single element - we're going to give it our best shot! Some guys experience body dysmorphia through muscle dysmorphia - sometimes called 'bigorexia' where the adoration of bigger bodies can become more than a erotic fascination, but a driver in how we perceive ourselves - sometimes with negative consequences. Spencer Colt rejoins us to talk about his experience, and how our image can sometimes be tied to schoolyard bullies, and if we push ourselves beyond our limits we could just find ourselves halfway up Mt. Fuji with a double patella dislocation. Now, not all experiences of body dysmorphia are under this umbrella - so we want to hear from you. If you've experienced some form of body dysmorphia we'd love to hear form you. Be that slender guys, chunky boys, tall or short guys - anyone who feels their body doesn't match up with what their brain thinks it should be. Margit Novack is an entrepreneur, thought leader in aging and pioneer in Senior Move Management. Margit founded Moving Solutions in 1996, when she was in her 40s. Over the next 25 years, her passion and commitment to serving older adults and their families inspired her team to provide world-class service that earned her awards and national media attention in this then-new cottage industry. She had no direct experience in the field at the time she started her company, but saw a need and sought to serve a vulnerable population. Margit is widely recognized as founder of the Senior Move Management industry. She is the Founding President of the National Association of Senior and Specialty Move Managers (NASMM), chaired the NASMM Ethics Commission and developed industry training. NASMM recognized Margit's commitment and service by creating the Margit Novack Award for Excellence in Senior Move Management. In 2020, Margit left the formal work world and began a new role as author, speaker and champion of a re-visioned picture of aging. Squint: Re-visioning the Second Half of Life is her first book, which she wrote during the Covid pandemic. Her book is an uplifting guide for the second half of life. Margit's memoir opens our eyes to the abundant possibilities of later life. She pairs profound and memorable personal stories with larger themes -- downsizing, caregiving, forgiveness, estrangement and more -- and shows that with the right perspective and “re-visioning,” the future is rich with possibility. Realistic, compassionate, substantive and uplifting, Margit's Squint is a guidebook that leaves us better equipped for the years ahead. She believes that "life will never get better than it is right now," and believes the statistic that a positive outlook can increase one's lifespan by seven years. She notes that, sometimes, we don't know what we are passionate about, and encourages listeners to be on a journey of uncovering your passions, which may change over time. At age 72, she recognizes her desire to be part of a team, so she started a "mitzvah team" of friends to make a difference in her community. She and her team have collected socks for shelters at long term health care facilities, for example. She believes in living with intention, as opposed to a "I'll see what happens" approach, and preaches about the value of intentionality in her book and during public speaking engagements. Kudos for Squint: “Telling it straight about aging and more, it's a must read, and a must have, for an enlightening and joyful journey.” -- Helen Dennis, Columnist, Author and Specialist on Aging and the New Retirement “A delightful and poignant journey through the common experiences of the second half of life.” -- Teepa Snow, Occupational Therapist and CEO of Positive Approach to Care Margit grew up in Philadelphia, went to the Philadelphia High School for Girls and has graduate and undergraduate degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. She is a great gardener, terrible cook and enthusiastic walker. Margit lives with her husband and three dogs (a retired Greyhound racer and two puppy mill rescues), and divides her time between Philadelphia and Maryland's eastern shore, where she loves kayaking upwind. Columbia, Maryland was created with an eye towards intentionally integrating neighborhoods based on race and income. Despite their intent, many of the methods utilized by The Rouse Company were made illegal with the Fair Housing Act, most prominently the practice of "steering" homeowners or renters to certain properties based on race. As these methods have become prohibited, Columbia's communities have begun to self-segregate due to the conscious and subconscious biases of consumers. The Columbia Housing Center was created to reverse the tide and encourage renters and homebuyers to make choices that will reinvest in Columbia's original vision. Columbia icon Jane Dembner has left a lasting mark on the community she loved and Andy Masters is worthy of carrying that legacy forward.

In a time when millions of citizens have hit the streets to protest for or against something, in an attempt to bring change to the most critical issues facing humanity, David Bedrick invites us to look at a different kind of activism. “It’s an activism born more from the mind and heart than marching feet. It’s expressed not by a megaphone or signs but through teaching, writing, and facilitating dialogue. An activism that embraces our individual and collective shadows rather than opposing them or fighting against them.”

“In complicated grief, what happens is, you haven't just lost the person, you've lost your identity.” ~Dr. Mark Rider Mark Rider, PhD, has developed a language for understanding the lyrical relationship between body and brain. “We learned how to use music improvisation to mirror a person's pain, to mirror a person's imagery of their cancer. And then we would change that music [so] it went in a healing direction.”  His work might best be described as a chemical connect-the-dots. Dopamine. Endorphins. Serotonin. There’s a reason your favorite piece of music makes you feel good - the brain produces all three of these chemicals in response.  Mark has adapted that mirroring further, creating a revolutionary treatment option called revisioning. In practice, the psychotherapy technique “activates” the same neurotransmitters of the brain when a client sits across from and communicates with a mirror image of their loved one (in the instance of grief) or themselves (in cases of trauma, depression, PTSD, etc).  As someone who’s experienced the power of revisioning in my own healing work, I am deeply grateful that this modality exists. I’m fascinated by revisioning as a stand alone treatment and how it can be employed in tandem with other modalities for addressing complex trauma. You can hear a firsthand account of my personal revisioning experience on CWH episode 134.  *** Dr. Mark Rider has been a licensed psychologist in Southlake, TX, for over 20 years. He has post-doctoral training in Neurotherapy, EMDR, Cognitive Hypnotherapy, and Psychopharmacology. His first book, The Rhythmic Language of Health and Disease (1997), demonstrated that neuroplastic shifts in the brain can be created by music and imagery, and were essential for health. His next book, Revisioning: Mirror Therapy for Unresolved Grief (2014) revolutionized the treatment of complicated grief. This technique has been shown to be 99% effective with this condition. Together with Lynn Heselton, their latest book, Revisioning: Rapid Mirror Neuron Psychotherapy for Grief and Trauma, has created groundbreaking treatments for PTSD, Personality Disorders, and Dissociative Disorders without the client having to relive the traumas.  For full show notes, guest information, and resources, visit: http://www.headhearttherapy.com/podcast *** Conversations with a Wounded Healer is a proud member of @mhnrnetwork. We squeed over Timothée Chalamet and discussed feeling connected and empowered with other writers and fangirls through writing fanfiction. My guest this week is young explorer and accomplished photographer, Alex Pflaum. In our conversation we turn back time and wander into the wily world of the ancient Silk Road, where Alex spends his time these days. He’s betting on a renaissance among budding Central Asian economies, not in trade, but in tourism.  At the time we spoke, Alex was working round-the-clock, finalizing the layout for his new book. Captured in his images is the awe-inspiring expanse of virgin landscape. There’s a raw beauty to it. Not for the feint-hearted, I thought, but for the last of us who find pleasure in remoteness. This is the Silk Road, after all. The very name conjures up images of camel convoys, Mongol hordes, boundless horizons, and of course, the Great Game, that period in the 19th century when British and Russian spies vied for territory and trade rights throughout Central Asia. But for Alex, the new Silk Road offers fresh opportunities for adventure seekers, eco-tourists and a few madmen as well.

We hope you enjoy the Journey!--- What is our place in the 14-billion-year history of the universe? What roles do we play in Earth's history? How do we connect with the intricate web of life? This podcast series is part of a larger project called Journey of the Universe that invites us to reflect on these questions. It consists of a film, a book, a series of conversations, and online classes. The creators of the Journey project imagine that by knowing more about the universe and Earth we will also know more about ourselves. This may give us grounds for navigating our own journey in challenging times. How did we come to be part of this universe story? How do we belong and how can we participate in its future flourishing? This series is a gateway into exploring these questions. In these podcasts of the Journey of the Universe Conversations we will meet scientists and historians, environmentalists and teachers, gardeners and urban planners. All of them are reflecting on how we can be more fully alive in this context of participating in a universe story.Connect deeply with these materials and more via the Journey of the Universe: A Story for Our Times Specialization, a series of Massive Online Open Courses hosted by Coursera and created by Yale.To receive up to date announcements on new podcasts and Journey community offerings, subscribe to our newsletter.

This Sacred Life Podcast with Shann Vander Leek | Soulful Living | Feminine Sovereignty | Wisdom Teachings

Every month I share transformational conversations with women who have learned to walk in beauty, with the strength, courage, and pleasure of reclaiming their feminine sovereignty. Women all over the world are rising up to have their voices heard and to be treated with respect. I like to give each of their voices a platform to speak their truth and inspire our listeners to do the same. Today it's my honor to introduce you to  Danielle Dulsky who amongst many things, is a midwife for helping us dig deep to access our holy wildness. She reminds us that we were all wild once. I first introduced you to Danielle during the Goddess Talk Sessions and again when she published her first book, Woman Most Wild (New World Library).  Danielle Dulsky is the author of The Holy Wild and Woman Most Wild. She is an artist, yoga teacher, energy worker, and founder of Living Mandala Yoga teacher training programs. She leads women’s circles, witchcraft workshops, and energy healing trainings and lives in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. Today we’ll be discussing Danielle’s new book, The Holy Wild: A Heathen Bible for the Untamed Woman The Holy Wild is the bible for the modern witch (female, male, or beyond the gender binary) who wants to deepen their spiritual power and embody magic at a new level. It is the book that can open up a previously timid or nervous person, who is afraid, yet excited about their energetic power. It is a guidebook for anyone who wants to look at their lives in a new way and reclaim the passionate vibrancy that our patriarchal culture may have stifled or tried to snuff out. The Holy Wild is a potent and powerful read… You can get a copy wherever books are sold. Show Notes: Your book is called The Holy Wild: A Heathen Bible for the Untamed Woman. How did you come up with this title? Who did you write this book for? What do you mean by the words “wild” and “untamed”? Could you give us an overview of the five elements, and how you made use of them in your book? You proudly call yourself a Witch. Can you explain what that means to you What if our listeners aren’t ready to identify as a Witch, but would like to invite more magick into their lives? Do you have any advice for them? A significant part of the book offers the reader a chance to write their own “verses” and stories. Why is this so important for their experience? Where can our listeners get a copy of The Holy Wild?

Rev. Dr. Angela Yarber discusses the revolutionary work of the Holy Women Icons Project. As an intersectionally ecofeminist organization, the Holy Women Icons Project seeks to empower marginalized women and to be an accomplice in the work for justice for ethnic and racial minorities, women, LGBTQs, people with differing abilities, immigrants and refugees, the poor, animals, the earth, and all living at the margins of society. This is the fifth and final episode in my series Revisioning Christianity. The series began with the icon of anastasis and it ends with icons of holy women throughout history, religion, and mythology.Rev. Dr. Angela Yarber is the Founder and Executive Director of the Holy Women Icons Project. The Holy Women Icons Project seeks to empower marginalized women by telling the stories of revolutionary holy women through art, writing, and special events. Noticing a lack of women in iconography, she gave traditional iconography a folk-feminist twist by painting images of revolutionary holy women from history, mythology, and scripture. The Holy Women Icons Project also includes special events, retreats, workshops, lectures, sermons, and worship series related to these revolutionary holy women. And in 2017, HWIP began creating a retreat center on Hawaii Island to house these special events, artwork, and writings.  Dr. Yarber speaks with John Shuck about her own journey toward simplicity, a renewed vocation, and her vision for queering the church by making the church fully inclusive and empowering for all people. She discusses her move to Hawaii with her wife and child, turning Holy Women Icons Project into a non-profit, her work in building self-esteem among adolescent girls, traversing grief, and honoring the stories of queer women of color through the Holy Women Icons Project. You can see and hear more of their story on the television show, Tiny House Nation. Rev. Dr. Yarber holds a Ph.D. in Art and Religion and is author of seven books that address the intersections among gender/sexuality, religion/spirituality, and the arts. An ordained, queer clergywoman, she served local churches for fourteen years, and she has taught graduate and undergraduate students since 2006. Her books include Microaggressions in Ministry, Holy Women Icons, Holy Women Icons Contemplative Coloring Book, The Gendered Pulpit, Dance in Scripture, Tearing Open the Heavens, & Embodying the Feminine in the Dances of the World's Religions. Other guests in the series, Revisioning Christianity include: John Dominic Crossan, Resurrecting Easter: How the West Lost and the East kept the Original Easter Vision, Bart Ehrman:  The Triumph of Christianity: How A Forbidden Religion Swept the World, David Skrbina: The Jesus Hoax: How St. Paul’s Cabal Fooled the World for Two Thousand Years, andBishop John Shelby Spong: Unbelievable: How Neither Ancient Creeds nor the Reformation Can Produce a Living Faith Today. All of those interviews are available on podcast at Progressive Spirit.

Dr. Richard Norgaard is Professor Emeritus of Ecological Economics in the Energy and Resources Group at the University of California, Berkeley, environmental pioneer, and founding member and former president of the International Society for Ecological Economics. After receiving his PhD at the University of Chicago, where he studied with numerous economists who would later be awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, he became a critic of free market fundamentalism and went on to found the field of ecological economics which he continues to lead today. His recent research addresses how environmental problems challenge scientific understanding and the policy process, how ecologists and economists understand systems differently, and the impact of globalization on environmental governance. A philosophical and eclectic thinker, Dr Norgaard received the Kenneth E. Boulding Memorial Award in 2006 for recognition of advancements in research combining social theory and the natural sciences –and for more than 40 years he has been a strong voice calling for introduction of values of spirituality, beauty and ecological boundaries into mainstream economics. He is the author of Development Betrayed: The End of Progress and a Co-evolutionary Revisioning of the Future, co-author or editor of three additional books, and has over 100 other publications spanning the fields of environment and development, tropical forestry and agriculture, environmental epistemology, energy economics, and ecological economics. He serves on the Board of Directors of the New Economics Institute, on scientific advisory boards to Tsinghua and Beijing Normal University, and on the Board of EcoEquity.   In this interview, Richard discusses the dichotomy between ecology and economics, how a kind of faith thinking underpins the economic system (economism), and the failure of neo-classical economics to adequately grasp environmental limits. He also touches on the limits of conventional economic measures and the need for an approach system to environmental issues that allows for effective global governance while respecting agency at the local level. A proud Californian, Richard also discusses his work in water stewardship for the California Delta independent science board and the danger of conservation's inherent bias towards the past in addressing the challenges posed by a changing climate. This is a rare opportunity to hear the latest views of a pioneering thinker who has had a major influence on how we think about ecological economics, raising profound questions about our understanding of economic progress and development. Reviving Hometowns, Energizing Communities with Dr. Eleanor Cooper – 9-3-16 | Mind Body Spirit Living How is the health of your hometown?  Strong local schools and economies are a foundation of American society, and yet in this year of a national election, we might forget to reflect on our own local priorities.  There are efforts going on all across the country, in towns big and small, to keep communities strong, vital, and energized.  What is the key to keeping our hometowns healthy?  This week we speak with a woman who has been a leader for change in her own community, and now helps others lead themselves back to health.  Join us as she shares her insights on what we need to know about having a healthy hometown. Dr. Eleanor McCallie Cooper is the former Executive Director of Chattanooga Venture, the organization that led Vision 2000 in Chattanooga, Tennessee.  Chattanooga’s visioning process is renown for setting a new course for the city’s revitalization that led to the Tennessee Aquarium and a “spirit of Renaissance” that brought Volkswagen to Chattanooga. She is currently a consultant to the Visioning a Greater Racine team in Racine, Wisconsin. Dr. Cooper served as Vice-President of the Lyndhurst Foundation. In recent years, she has been the Chattanooga Coordinator for the Marshall Memorial Fellowship, a program of the German Marshall Fund of the United States that brings young leaders from 22 countries in Europe to the United States. Today we see the emergence of a liberating new way of being in the world -one that weaves together the deep Nature wisdom of Indigenous traditions, the spiritual insights of Eastern philosophy, and the quantum breakthroughs of modern science. By making this worldview part of our daily lives, we usher in an era of greater health and awareness, for ourselves and for society. For all of the achievements of modern "progress," the Western way of thinking has led us - personally and collectively - to a crisis. We experience ourselves as fragmented beings, separated from one another and Nature, and this alienation has led to destructive behavior that endangers the future of life on this planet. But each of us has the potential to transcend this crisis, and leave the era of separation behind.Glenn Aparicio Parry calls this new world view ORIGINAL THINKING. Through Original Thinking, we can strip away the destructive practices of rationalist Western thought, and reconnect with the Source that brings us health and the experience of our truest selves."It is important to incorporate Native wisdom into our lives because the separation we feel is only illusory. Nature and human nature; being and Human Being, are One. The concepts we routinely use, the way we see the world, has perpetuated certain illusory ways to seeing and being in the world that are dangerous. We treat the plants, animals, and all the elements poorly because we don't understand theyare us," as Glenn shares. Join Julie Ann and Glenn to explore how ORIGINAL THINKING offers a radical revisioning of how we think - and what it means to be human.
