Women contribute enormously to the workplace all over the world. Yet, all too often, their contributions are seen as less important than those of their male colleagues. And while things may have improved over the years, statistics suggest that women still earn only 84% of what their male counterparts earn. Clearly, we aren't where we need to be and this is a topic that needs airtime, awareness, and changes. I was so happy to speak with Valerie Alexander (www.speakhappiness) about women at work. Valerie has done many things professionally, but I'll keep it short: she earned a law degree from the UC Berkeley School of Law, she's written screenplays that have been purchased by large studios, and she's the author of two books including How Women Can Succeed in the Workplace. I loved the book, and I was so happy to speak with her and share her ideas with you.So, listen in as Valerie and I talk about women at work!

In this episode I describe several cognitive biases that we commonly fall victim to. Can you identify any of these in from your own experiences? If you have been following the controversy over social media you are aware of the problems with confirmation bias that leads us to believe dodgy sources when they agree with our preconceived opinions, but to hold other opinions to a much higher standard of evidence. In this episode I'm going to explore a few lesser-known types of cognitive bias that could be impacting your judgement. If you had a chance to listen to my interview with Nobel Laureate Dr. Daniel Kahneman you would understand that our brains do not naturally follow the formal laws of logic and inference. We use several shortcuts that work well for us in everyday life. In a more recent interview, happiness guru Valerie Alexander pointed out that we need to shine a light on these biases to recognize their impacts on our mental processes and to address them. Here is my crash course on how to recognize a few more insidious biases and eliminate them in our quest for the ultimate Vulcan rationality. Her TED Talk, “How to Outsmart Your Own Unconscious Bias” has been viewed over half a million times and is used in boardrooms and classrooms around the world to enlighten leaders and future leaders about the brain science behind bias and how we can work together to create more equitable outcomes for everyone. Valerie's books include: Happiness as a Second Language, Success as a Second Language, and How Women Can Succeed in the Workplace (Despite Having “Female Brains”) Valerie has had a varied and successful career as a corporate securities lawyer, investment banker and Internet executive in the Silicon Valley, and more recently as a Hollywood screenwriter and director. This fall I'm releasing bonus episodes of The Take Home. No new lectures on leadership, instead I'm sharing the amazing podcasts created by the students in my Leadership for Sport Professionals class. Today's bonus episode features "Leading Together" produced and created by Mariel Clark, Matthew Jacobe, and Austin Sanders. In a creative podcast format, Mariel, Matthew, and Austin reflect on how what they learned in class is highlighted during their interview with Valerie Alexander, the CEO at Speak Happiness https://www.speakhappiness.com. During the interview they discuss the importance of a liberal arts education, gendered-leadership expectations, unconscious bias, and the importance of feeling fulfilled in the workplace. And I think you'll love the penguin analogy, the metaphor for swimming with the current, and the Jackie Robinson standard. Valerie is a phenomenal guest and I hope you enjoy the episode! I would be grateful if you'd let me know what you think at @TingleJK. Credits: Music used in Leading Together: "Creative Minds" by BenSound. The podcast cover photo is of a Dale Grimshaw mural and was taken by Jacob near the Tybalds Estate in WC1, London, England. The intro music is "Be My Guest" by Crowander. "My underground" by Distemper is the closing credits music.

The past year brought an educational landscape and challenges the likes of which educators have never encountered. That means that, in addition to the normal wear and tear of a year spent at the front of a classroom of head of a district, many educators are more worn down than usual as summer draws on.However, there's no slowing down now. The fall semester promises even more firsts and another unique experience, and it's critical that educators use this summer break to find contentment, happiness and a chance to recharge.Change Starts Here host Dustin Odham got some help in this task from guest Valerie Alexander, a world-renowned author and speaker and expert on happiness and inclusion. She has authored “Happiness as a Second Language” and several other popular books on happiness and success, and she is a globally recognized speaker on the topics of happiness in the workplace, unconscious bias and the advancement of women. The most challenging thing about being happy, perhaps, is that it isn't our first language –at least for many of us. A few months ago Steve was researching the topic of bias in the workplace when he came across an incredible TED Talk -- “How to Outsmart Your Own Unconscious Bias”. Not only was it well delivered, but it also inspired him to look deep within himself and to take action to become a more empathetic person. Although Steve is far from perfect, and will never claim to be, he has learned that by small and simple things, he can harness greater happiness in both his life and in the lives of others. This is why he wanted to get Valerie on the show, not to rehash her TED Talk, but to dive deeper into her incredible story about how she has gone from a corporate securities lawyer, investment banker and executive in Silicon Valley, screenwriter and director in Hollywood, to an author, keynote speaker, and successful business leader.Valerie Alexander is committed to expanding happiness and inclusion in all communities. In this podcast, I am excited to share with you a very special conversation that I had recently on Facebook Live. I had the pleasure of interviewing a dear friend of mine and an accomplished keynote speaker and author, Valerie Alexander. Valerie and I had a really important conversation about unconscious bias in real estate. Currently, we are in the midst of a global pandemic and on top of that, we are in a state of social injustice. I know for myself, if I can be candid as a white woman, my eyes have been opened in a way they've never been opened before in terms of race and racism. I have been working on my own self to do a lot of work, to better educate myself and our family on how we can be better and how we can be actively anti-racist and how we can be a better ally. I'm excited to share my journey here on the podcast. I'll be sharing periodically from time to time my journey, because I think it's important to talk about it. This conversation is one of the first steps in that for me. The reason why I reached out to Valerie is because Valerie is an amazing speaker. She gave an incredible TED talk a few years ago, all about unconscious bias. What's really interesting is the brain science behind unconscious bias. So I hope you are able to really listen and really, really give this interview the time and attention it deserves. I think it's a really, really important conversation.
