I'm Jen - a white, cisgendered, straight-identifying, American-born woman with a history of Christian and conservative influences. My lived experience is one of solid economic security and educational privilege. All of this shaped the lens through which I viewed life for the majority of my adult years - and it created a comfortable echo chamber where “my existing views were neatly reinforced and alternative ideas were rarely considered…†This no longer works for me. I decided to pursue meaningful work, passion projects, and relationships that would serve as "antidotes to the echo chamber." This podcast is part of that work. Rather than put people in stereotypical boxes - I want to grow more curious and open minded. This means listening deeply to another person’s perspective, especially those who differ from me. It means challenging my old paradigms and assumptions. I pursue this on a public platform because I want to foster this mindset shift in our culture. My guests and I believe that conversations heard here will spur more healthy exchanges, marked by a spirit of inquiry with and for the people in our lives (especially those whom we don’t know or understand yet). I was always intrigued by the premise behind “Love Is Blind” - a reality show where singles try to find a match and fall in love -- without ever seeing each other face-to-face, as emotional connection attempts to conquer physical attraction. Full disclosure, I don't watch TV so I haven't seen an episode but still, the notion of moving beyond physical appearance and chemistry feels simultaneously intriguing and super risky. Then @Drew Taylor Cohen caught my attention with a post detailing her experience when building her @Bumble profile strictly on words stating her chosen values. NO perfect selfies.NO predictable prompts that yield, “I love to hike, travel, cook, walk my dogs and go wine tasting.” NO eggplant emojis. Just the personal values she attempts to live by. (Oh, and one picture of her at a distance to prevent being flagged as a bot). @Drew Taylor Cohen is an Impact Consultant and Values Coach, so we talked about how to identify our own chosen values and distinguish them from our beliefs and identities (something I rooted myself in historically). We also discuss the challenges of seeking validation from others while navigating personal choices and the need for self-awareness and the evolving nature of values as individuals grow and change. What an awesome conversation especially as I consider something similar in my own dating journey. Anyone relate? Join the conversation…Guest Bio:Trained in holistic, neurodiverse and values-aligned coaching techniques, Drew helps singles and couples break old patterns and align their values to find lasting love.Dedicated to finding love that felt soul-aligned and safe, she set out on a personal development journey that led her to discover her values and trust her needs and desires. What did she do next? She created a dating profile with no photos, just screenshots of her values and how she envisioned them being shared in an aligned partnership. And it worked! Her fiancé and her just celebrated four years of swiping right on the things that matter most.Through 1:1 coaching, she now helps her clients rewrite their own values-aligned love story and clarify what truly matters in love. Her aligned love method is about prioritizing your non-negotiables and curating love that mirrors the truth of who you already are.She also developed and leads the Live Authentically program. This workshop and accompanying workbook uses a proven framework that guides participants to explore who you are, discover your chosen values and pursue an aligned life. When she's not helping people align their relationships and life to their values, she's supporting purpose-driven organizations as a freelance impact consultant. My conversation with Dr. Kasi Lacey speaks to a common experience among many; a woman and leader confronting the glass ceiling in an organization.Kasi was passed over more than once for positions she was eminently qualified for “because they were instructed to hire a man…” Her encounter with gender bias became an inflection point; she did a new thing and made the decision to walk in and “act like a man” and demand the job she had more than earned. Kasi deliberately mimicked the hubris and assertion of a man who once came to her office demanding a promotion of his own. It worked. As a bi-racial woman who presents “white” - Dr. Lacey shares her experiences with racism as well as toxic leadership and hustle culture. We also discuss the complexities of a “fake it til you make it” mentality and the significance of listening to one's inner voice as a means of empowerment and self-trust. Join the conversation!Guest Bio:I'm Kasi—a, psychologist, confidence coach, bi-racial woman, mother, and former C-suite leader who left the structured world of higher education to pursue a bigger mission: helping women step into unshakable confidence and unapologetic leadership. For years, I played by the rules—earning my Ph.D. at 26, climbing the leadership ranks, and breaking barriers in male-dominated spaces. I fought to get my seat at the table, only to realize my ladder was leaning against the wrong building. I had checked all the boxes of success, yet I still felt like I was playing small. That no longer works for me.I built my own business, H & L Legacy Consulting, to help high-achieving women overcome imposter syndrome, advocate for themselves, and lead with confidence. Whether it's navigating workplace challenges, negotiating salaries, or owning their worth, I believe that when women stop doubting themselves, they change industries, organizations, and lives—including their own.Website: https://www.kasilacey.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drkasilacey/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/drkasilaceyLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dr-kasi-lacey-207815110/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@drkasilacey Oh, and fun fact? In this conversation, Amber Abila and I discuss the challenges many of us face when it comes to listening to our bodies, setting boundaries, and giving voice to what's true for us. Amber is a binge and overeating coach, while I coach people to speak with impact and clarity from their truest voice. We both see huge overlap in our coaching practices and agree that listening to our body is crucial for understanding our needs and then getting them met - whether that is with moderate amounts of nourishing food or expressing our authentic Selves verbally. It has taken me a long time to learn what it means to create safety in my body, to sit with my emotions and not eat or drink them away. Amber and I dig into matters of self-worth, the struggle against people-pleasing, and the reality of shame and its ability to trigger overeating, binge eating, staying silent or speaking non-truths. I don't often use the word “enlightening” but this conversation with Lara Waldman was just that. We explored our stories of spiritual awakening, the ways that we understand this elusive term called “manifestation,” and our unique journeys of self-discovery. This was a topic of conversation that I once would have labeled heretical and taboo because it didn't align with my limited viewpoint or echo chamber. What a loss that would have been.Lara shares her personal experiences to illustrate the interconnectedness of money, intimacy, and ancestral trauma. At one point, she says, “...for me, manifesting is mostly about releasing and letting go of everything that is NOT YOU, which is a lot of history, a lot of stories, a lot of programs, a lot of patterns…we're here to know ourselves often through the experience of lack, but that's not the truth of who we are…manifesting is connecting with who you are and what your soul wants to experience through physical reality. And that's not just the good stuff, right? We're here to have a full, rich experience of being alive as a human being on this planet. This is high level stuff.” Yes, yes it is “high level stuff” and totally worth the conversation. Join us. When echo chambers collide you get the best conversation! I sat down with Justin Cauthen, a man with 20 years of military service and five combat tours to his credit - not to mention leadership roles in situations and countries where hostility is often the norm. His story is powerful. And so is his heart. We talked about things that matter deeply—PTSD, suicide, the ripple effect trauma has across professions, the toll military life takes on spouses and kids. Justin shared with such humility and vulnerability. One of the things he said that struck me most was this: trauma radiates. And it does—it moves through people, relationships, even whole communities. And this is experienced by many - not just those associated with the military. BUT, there is a flip side! Healing also has a ripple effect. This conversation is also about “assuming noble intent” - as Justin puts it - lowering our defenses, asking the hard questions, and holding space for someone else's truth. And let me tell you, Justin showed up for this in a big way. We discussed the impact of military service on personal integrity and the importance of grace and understanding in supporting veterans during their transition to civilian life. I walked away changed. And I believe you will, too. Join the conversation…Guest Bio:With over two decades of service in the United States Army and healthcare, I am beginning the transition to the civilian workforce. This is NOT an easy transition for anyone who starts into a culture such as the military at the age of 17 or 18.My military career began as a healthcare specialist overseeing the night shift EMT team, expanded into higher-level leadership, leadership instruction, senior advisory roles, and aeromedical evacuation management, and will end with my current senior position as the Executive Clinical Director of Evans Army Community Hospital. With an extensive background in military healthcare and a focus on healthcare innovation and project management, my tenure at Evans Army Community Hospital has been marked by the advancement of medical facilities and services for a vast beneficiary community. At the helm of a 2,700-member team, we've fostered innovation and optimized resources in a dynamic healthcare environment.I have had the honor of leading troops in the far east and southwest of Asia as well as other regions. I am a Flight Medic by trade, but have had the privilege as serving in a myriad of rolls. Most notably was an Advisor to the Ministries of Health for the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan as well as Logistics Command to the Afghan Army. It was here, in Kabul from 2020-2021 that I learned the importance of assuming intent and the importance of recognizing the nobility in each of us, that we are ALL doing the best we can; with what we have, from the experiences we have had and the resources life have given us.Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/justin.cauthen?igsh=dmZ6azJicXEwb3Jr&utm_source=qrFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/share/18fNhfrPuu/?mibextid=wwXIfrLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/justin-cauthen?utm_source=share&utm_campaign=share_via&utm_content=profile&utm_medium=ios_app About Jen Oliver:I pursue and create environments where we converse on the REAL stuff that changes us. Y'all, this episode with Bara Mann was one that I want you to be a part of.We talked about belonging, identity, and the stories we tell ourselves—especially the ones that no longer serve us. Bara shared her childhood moments of trying to fit in - and I talked of what that looks like as an adult. I've been that chameleon too—fitting in everywhere, but not necessarily showing all of me.This conversation was about breaking down the invisible walls we put up, and finding courage to speak from our truest place. We also explored the energy of our words—how our stories hold weight, shape our lives, and ripple into the world. Every time we speak from our truth, we add momentum to the life we want to live. This episode is a loving invitation to question old stories and come home to yourself.Grab a seat on the couch. Let's keep going deeper. Together.Guest Bio:Bara Mann (she/they) is a speaker and transformational life coach who helps driven individuals create more joy and impact. Reading “Horribly Lovely” was exactly that…and, I could not stop turning the pages. My conversation with the author, Jon Kohrs, went deep as we talked about his “Horribly Lovely” journey. I will avoid spoilers, but this newly released book may cause you to reconsider many things. I confess to sitting in judgment of people and behaviors that Jon's writing exposes; from addiction to marital infidelity, he opens the door wide open to us with each chapter. This conversation opened me up to a greater space of love, compassion, and understanding. Jon shares his personal experiences with shame and an insatiable quest for connection, providing insights into the challenges of being truly present for people we love and the impact of past traumas on current relationships. We also discuss the roots of addiction, the stigma surrounding suicidal ideation, and the importance of authenticity in sharing personal stories. The dialogue emphasizes the gray areas of right and wrong, the beauty in messiness, and the transformative journey of being human. Join our conversation…Here is the link again to the website. The alchemy quiz is at the top. http://horriblylovely.com/Guest Bio:With an unconventional approach to writing, Jon is trying to break the norms of how we express ourselves authentically and idiosyncratically with the full originality of who we are as individuals. His writing is dreamlike, symbolic, and even poetic, uplifting the human spirit through the clarity and blunt punctuation of our experience living here together. His writing is an attempt to weave wisdom from his own unconventional journeys, with the Enneagram, shamanism, and Jungian alchemy, to explore the depth of human transformation. Jon is inspired to investigate how love works in this big bang universe of ours to empower others to bring their own real, honest, and uncomfortable love stories to the world.Jon balances writing with consulting opportunities to transform companies, teams, and leaders that desire to work in whole new ways. He serves as a designer, coach, and teacher, helping employees grow through the process of transforming ideas into intrapreneurial ventures. In both the literary and corporate worlds, he's served as a creative bridge between the personal and transpersonal realms. Janice and I unpack our personal fears and the unique way she continues to overcome hers. I am someone who has historically craved certainty and safety - and as usual – my perspective shifts and so does our conversation! Our discussion pivoted into dating, love and our own relationships and divorces. We got into communication and breakups and the way fear can be both debilitating and liberating.I met Janice when she became one of my 2024 TEDx speakers - her talk was different because it was about identifying emotional wounds, facing fears and overcoming them by doing some pretty unique things, one fear, per year. I am honored to be in conversation with Mark Patinkin, finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in international reporting, as he shares an array of human stories that help us to grasp the complexities of life and war in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza. Patinkin moves from armchair commentaries to analyst to storyteller and beautifully amplifies voices and perspectives that need to be heard. He goes into the homes of both Jews and Palestinians to bear witness to their experiences. Mark is one of few journalists allowed into Gaza and he takes readers and listeners like us with him. My limited view on love and relationships has been blown wide open again. Anna K. Morris is on the “couch” with me and we talk super candidly about true love and knowledge of self in our romantic partnerships. This is NOT the rom-com, cultural ideal, religiously formed, or social media driven version of “love and romance.” We talk about the REAL, exciting, painful, ego-challenging and even non-conventional approaches to a strong relationship - one built upon healthy autonomy as an individual FIRST - which can lend to a greater level of intimacy with others. Anna talks openly about her life with Derek which lacks the co-dependent dance that I brought to my own relationships in the past. We both dive into our personal experiences with heartbreak, deep intimacy, and the importance of listening to one's body for clues on both. We continually come back to the significance of integrity in relationships and the necessity of being whole as a precursor to seeking love from others.. Join us. Our Guest:Anna K. My friend and guest, Kelley Sewell, says her voice felt small in her younger years –yet when she wrote, she found solace and empowerment in the act of writing—her pen becoming a powerful tool to express what couldn't always be spoken. Join me in an intimate conversation with Kelley, a skilled book editor and writer, as we unpack the journey of discovering our true voice through writing, speaking and other creative outlets - along with the liberation that comes when we break free from constraints that keep us silent. It's not just about putting words on a page, but about engaging in self-discovery and healing. We delve into the profound role writing plays in facilitating tough conversations, particularly around sensitive issues like domestic violence (a topic we cover in our second segment). By sharing our personal experiences, we want to inspire essential dialogues with others, using written words as both personal medicine and a bridge to connect, support, and advocate for change. Our conversation also sheds light on speaking intentionally in critical situations, drawing from Kelley's poignant story about her sister-in-law Corinne, who showed great bravery when she spoke up for herself. Through Corrine's tragic story, we emphasize the necessity of trusting our deepest intuition and advocating for those who cannot speak for themselves. This week's episode is dedicated to a beautiful soul, Corinne Wiedel Sewell. Though her life was cut devastatingly short - her voice and legacy continues in the hope that YOU find your voice, in its truest form.NOTE TO OUR LISTENERS: We want you safe and well-cared for. The second segment of this episode speaks to sensitive matters of homicide and suicide. I loved my conversation with Brad Walsh, a boudoir photographer and male ally in the women's empowerment space. Brad has a quality about him that makes a potentially sensitive topic totally accessible - we delve right into the art and beauty we've uniquely experienced when clothing is removed. This chat transcends lingerie, eroticism and taking pictures purely to create turn-on in another person (although many may pursue this art form for that reason). Not even close. Brad describes the way in which a woman emerges new, more whole, and enthralled with her own beauty after a photography session PLUS we explore the psychological safety needed to make that possible when we hold space for others.Join us for this conversation and have your perspective expanded with regard to the dignity, vulnerability, and strength that this artform offers. I am “on the couch” in conversation with Saloma Fisher who lived until age 32 in a conservative Amish community; we covered stuff that shocked me right out of my own misconceptions. Yes, there are the typical things many are aware of…no cars, modern conveniences, outside influences, music, or TV. BUT, the drinking, partying and “bed courting” that begins for some Amish youth around age 16? Lesser known.Saloma and I also talk about what being ex-communicated from your family and community feels like along with how she started over as a single parent with an 8th grade education and no knowledge of how to pay bills, take a job, and so on.Saloma loves deeply and is a woman of incredible faith despite being told she was going to “hell” in a community where you can only hope to be good enough through your works to merit heaven. She helps me understand the coexistence of being oppressed and living fearfully in a prescribed role AND feeling safe and secure in a loving community and faith practice. While she does not speak for every person who identifies as Amish - her experience is illuminating and provides incredible hope to any person who dreams for bigger things and is determined to have a sense of control in their own life.Saloma Fisher BIO: I was born and raised in NW Pennsylvania in an Amish culture. I am the proud mom of 6 kids, 5 girls and 1 boy, and a grandma to 2 precious grandchildren with a 3rd on the way! I am an entrepreneur and a visionary at heart and founded Cup of Hope Ministries - a nonprofit organization that helps teen and single moms locally. I am also in the process of opening Cup of Hope Cafe - a small coffee shop and bakery where 10% of the profits flow into our nonprofit to benefit moms directly.I love all things coffee, friends and community. And most of all, Jesus, the one who set me free from bondage and has given me a love for others.Facebook: https//facebook.com/cupofhopeministry Website: www.cupofhopeministry.com About Jen Oliver:I pursue and create environments where we converse on the REAL stuff that changes us. We got passionate and informed in this episode.I had the honor of hosting @TracyDeTomasi, CEO of Callisto, a survivor-founded nonprofit that has been able to create an encrypted platform allowing sexual assault survivors to find others harmed by the same perpetrator, without requiring them to report or come forward publicly. With a match in the Callisto Vault system, survivors receive free and confidential legal options counseling. This is a win-win-win and yet – with all of the money and resources in the world - Callisto is at risk of closing their doors. How can this be?We dive into a very REAL conversation about what's at stake. Activist, educator and Jeffrey Epstein survivor, Jess Michaels, underscores the fact that surviving sexual assault is difficult on many levels - but it is made a bit easier when you aren't alone in it; Callisto is a force for healing in that sense. The three of us converse boldly about the REAL good being done and the voices and financial backing needed to continue that important work. Join me, Jess, Tracy and the team as we imagine a world in which survivors of sexual violence are supported and empowered to find healing and justice on their own terms. We hope you will join in this important conversation…Resources mentioned in this episode:TED Talk: The reporting system that sexual assault survivors want | Jessica Laddhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orumugzJpt0Previous season episodes with guest, Jess Michaels:Surviving Epstein; Normalizing Our Response to Sexual Assault - part 1https://www.listenforreal.com/surviving-epstein-normalizing-our-response-to-sexual-assault-part-1/Surviving Epstein; Normalizing Our Response to Sexual Assault - part 2https://www.listenforreal.com/surviving-epstein-normalizing-our-response-to-sexual-assault-part-2/Our Guests:Tracy DeTomasiTracy has held leadership positions over the past 20 years, across the nonprofit sector, where she developed and implemented trauma-informed programming and curricula. She was instrumental in changing domestic violence laws in the US and has worked on projects globally with The Commonwealth of Nations, Ecuador, Australia, The United Kingdom, South Africa, and Ghana. Previously, Tracy was the Co-Founder of Good People Collective, the Interim Executive Director at NO MORE, and the VP of Domestic Violence Services at the YWCA.As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Tracy has extensive experience working in the field of gender-based violence, giving her a deep understanding of the ecosystem of survivors, offenders, and allies. She has consulted with organizations to develop tech-based tools, such as an app that educates users about violence against women, a smartphone device for sexual violence prevention safety, and virtual reality trainings to address Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and Anti-Sexual Harassment.Website: https://www.projectcallisto.org/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/callisto/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/callistoorgLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/callisto-tech-to-combat-sexual-assault/ Jess Michaels is a dance industry professional with 30 years experience as a performer, educator, and entrepreneur. She is also a 1991 survivor of sexual assault by Jeffrey Epstein and childhood sexual abuse. Shockingly, her healing journey began December 14, 2012, after she and her hometown of Newtown CT were devastated by the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Jess not only witnessed the impact of mass tragedy all around her but also experienced the full force of her past trauma catching up to her. In 2015, Jess found immense purpose and hope when she joined Dylan's Wings of Change, a foundation dedicated to Dylan Hockley, one of the first-grade victims in the mass shooting. She helped develop the Wingman program for dance studios, sports, and schools and her work as a speaker & educator on empathy, inclusion, and community-building began. It was there in Newtown, teaching dance classes and working alongside brave parents who lost their children, Jess began to connect the value of shame-free, community-based early trauma intervention to the needs of sexual assault survivors. The 2019 arrest of Epstein motivated her to finally confront her past. Breaking her #MeToo silence, she channeled her own healing journey into action.Today, she's the founder and driving force behind 3Joannes SAFR—a groundbreaking Sexual Assault First Aid Certification Course and SA First Aid Kit (mobile app). Through her work, Jess equips communities with the tools to minimize the devastating long-term effects of sexual violence. Her ultimate goal? To ensure no one else loses decades shackled by the ghosts of unprocessed trauma, as she did.Website: https://www.jessmichaelsspeaks.comInstagram: https://instagram.com/jessmichaelsspeaksLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jessmichaelsspeaks?utm_source=share&utm_campaign=share_via&utm_content=profile&utm_medium=ios_app About Jen Oliver:I pursue and create environments where we converse on the REAL stuff that changes us. I spoke with Lisa Howard because I recall making assumptions about “activists” in previous years, especially as it relates to climate change. Full disclosure, I KNEW NOTHING about the state of our planet or the climate and simply parroted what I would hear conservative pundits assert. . SO now, I have conversations like these to learn, expand my perspective, and shift where necessary. This conversation applies to anyone who sees a problem and actively works to make the situation better for themselves and others. May we all adopt this title! Talking to Lisa was lovely because it helped me understand the heart behind many activists - regardless of their cause. The term “activist” gets a bad rap in some settings, but regardless of the cause - I have a newfound admiration for those who commit time, talent, and energy and take risks for something they believe in - and I count myself among them. Our Guest:Lisa Howard is the co-leader of the Sacramento-Roseville chapter of Citizens' Climate Lobby (CCL), a state coordinator for CCL, and a member of the Sacramento chapter of Al Gore's Climate Reality Project. Lisa's focus is on inspiring others to believe that one person can make a difference, motivating people to take action on the climate crisis, and giving folks the tools they need to get started. She has a black belt in taekwondo, a degree in journalism, and a day job as a webmaster for a charter school. Her two kids are the reason she got involved in climate activism and the reason she continues to fight for a better future.Website: https://www.sacramentoccl.org/Instagram link: https://www.instagram.com/cclsacramento/Facebook link: https://www.facebook.com/CCLsacramento About Jen Oliver:I pursue and create environments where we converse on the REAL stuff that changes us. I am upping the ante on REAL conversations as I sit down with my close friends, Jill Osur and Lisa Orrell. Jill and Lisa's not-so-random meeting led to a partnership that's as dynamic as it is loving. Their relationship teaches and challenges me and our open-hearted talks underscore the power of honest friendships - the kind in which we can show up authentically while paving the way to a more equitable world. We unpack my once narrow, and sadly, homophobic perspective and how it has expanded in large part due to conversations with LGBTQ+ friends and loved ones. This conversation offers further proof that our lived experience and personal story can change minds when we share our truest selves with others. I also love our discussion on the gift of Gen Z - the next wave of humans who are pretty perplexed by older generations' use of societal labels and our tendency toward categorizing human souls. Guests Bios:Jill's Bio:A former UC Berkeley softball player, Jill Osur still draws on her athletic background to hone her leadership style and overcome obstacles. My preconceived notions on the gender transition experience got BLOWN UP thanks to this conversation with Andrea Leigh - a powerful woman of influence straight outta Oklahoma - with an affinity for fashion, tattoos, sports cars, Harleys and guns. Andrea has the unique perspective and wisdom that comes from living a full and satisfying life as a man and now, as a woman. I invited Poonan Bhuchar on the pod because I believed her lived experience of marriage, divorce, and career differed from mine and would expand my perspective. Well...Poonan did teach me a great deal - but ultimately, we are more stunningly alike than different. From overriding our gut instincts, to not listening to our body, to doing the very best we can for our kids…we cover a lot of ground and it all relates to our ability to heal emotionally. Poonan called it out; we each have a social responsibility to take care of our emotional well-being and break the ties of generational trauma. This is a tell-it-like-it-is conversation…join us. Our Guest's BioPoonam Bhuchar, a practicing attorney, is an acclaimed speaker and coach on overcoming trauma and emotional pain in order to live a happy, fulfilled life. This conversation was a little edgy, but so illuminating for me. I connect with Jaclyn Foster, the insightful author of "I Touch Myself" and we navigate awkward waters with laughter and REAL talk. There is more to consider with the intricacies of self-love and the art of body awareness. Plus, we get into the confusing paradox of our response to pleasure; we can desire unhealthy behaviors like overeating or excessive drinking and also instinctively shut down overwhelmingly positive sensations, such as those experienced during a sexual encounter. So much to unpack, join the conversation…Our Guest's BioJaclyn is known as The Provocateur of Love, on a mission to support women to dissolve shame and fear, so they can fall wildly in love with life and their relationships. She is a published author of the book, I Touch Myself, Lessons to Wake Up Desire & Fire Up Your Sex Drive; a book that's all about her journey of following desire and unpacking the pull to follow rules and be a good girl. REAL conversation with Alycia Anderson - a wheelchair user who responds with candor to discriminatory assumptions and uncomfortable conversations that happen in her presence or after she has rolled away. Alycia helped me to remove the fear and pity lens that I was looking at disabled folks through. I was operating from an ableist perspective - a notion that a “normal” body is the ideal - concluding that people in bodies different from the norm would want to be fixed or restored to whole. That is not necessarily the case and it's favoring one ability over another. I am starting to unwire my old operating system; when we define someone by their disability we risk missing the person! About our guest:Alycia Anderson is an international TEDx motivational speaker, disability advocate, DEI & accessibility corporate inclusion educator, podcast host of Pushing Forward with Alycia and founder / CEO of The Alycia Anderson Company, LLC. Alycia's company focuses on the education and advocacy of diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace. Alycia was recently awarded 2022 Employee Business Resource Group (EBRG) Program of the Year.Alycia holds a European Master's Degree in Adapted Physical Activity emphasizing the benefits, practices and principles of inclusion. She is a tennis player, cyclist, identical twin and has been a wheelchair user since birth.Alycia shares her journey globally to help companies and organizations understand the true benefits inherent to building a diverse, inclusive and accessible workplace and society. Shining light on how our diversities are core to the qualities that make each of us uniquely qualified and able in life.Alycia's authenticity and charisma draw others to her, and she naturally connects with them to inspire, mentor, champion, and support. Alycia right sizes everyday obstacles to open minds to a world of possibility. "And that's how she rolls!"Alycia has spoken for the likes of: TEDx, Victoria's Secret, Abercrombie & Fitch Co., eHarmony, Hyatt, AAA, AbbVie, Blue Shield of California, Arizona State University, Burlington Stores and has been featured in an AT&T commercial, the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, and the Orange County Register. She's also been a guest on the Leeza Gibbons show, spotlighted on CBS news, and featured on the covers of Living Low and New Mobility Magazines. I learned so much during this conversation with Emelda De Coteau. Our motherhood journeys look very different - as we talk about the emotional terrain of raising a child with unique needs.Tears were definitely shed in this episode; Emelda speaks honestly about her journey as a mother to her vibrant, neurodivergent child. At one point, she describes how it feels to watch your child struggle to find a playmate and be understood by other children - and what you do and don't do in hard moments like that. It was a wakeup call for me. We delve into the practical aspects of parenthood that many families encounter, from advocating for suitable educational resources to nurturing communication with children who experience the world differently. This was a very REAL and important talk that sharpened and bonded both of us. May no parent feel alone on their journey! Our Guests Bio:Emelda Juanita De Coteau is a loving wife, mama, creative (writer, podcaster, spiritual activist / organizer), and believer seeking God anew in each moment. Although based in Baltimore, this daughter of a Honduran immigrant feels at home throughout the world. She leads Pray with Our Feet (PWF), an online community lifting the intersection of progressive Christian faith and social justice; she co-hosts the PWF podcast with her Mom, Trudy. My conversation with Christie Watrous expands my limited viewpoint…again. We unpack what it means to connect with our bodies and each other, defining intimacy and pleasure in REAL terms. Spoiler alert: intimacy and pleasure are not always sexual and wow sometimes they are - AND it can look different than what the culture dishes up. As the founder of Embodied Life Transitions, Christie brings her personal experience of transformation and empowerment to our discussion, offering insights into reclaiming our bodies and desires. We talk candidly about our need to deconstruct shame narratives and embrace the pursuit of pleasure, which extends beyond the confines of the bedroom and into the joy of our simple daily rituals, from sipping a warm beverage to soaking in the melody of our favorite tune.Christie and I confront our individual and collective truths - from unhealthy self-concepts to narratives that frame the end of a marriage as failure. Another REALity check on the couch with one of my besties - Christina and I share honest stuff about our bodies and how to process emotions and the sensations we feel. We unpack my struggle with what can be trusted and acted upon and what can't. This talk with Dr. Sarah Almilli underscores the very reason I started this podcast! We start with my recap of when I was called a racist (among other fun things) on social media – and my determination to pursue conversations that broaden my limited perspective.AND, Sarah delivered a REAL convo to be sure. She moved from Egypt to the U.S. at the age of 17 and reflects on the challenges she faced as an immigrant and as a woman pursuing a career in medicine. As a middle easterner, she was often associated with terrorism and faced misconceptions about her home country. As a woman, she was discounted despite her brilliance and determination.Sarah also shares vulnerably about the trauma of childhood displacement during the Iraq-Kuwait war. A timely recount given all that is occurring right now in places like Gaza, Ukraine, and even our own southern border. It is incredible how all of this struggle informs her professional life; Dr. Almilli is both a clinician and entrepreneur redefining the human aspect in healthcare. Guest Bio:Dr. Sarah Almilli, Advanced Clinical Pharmacist is the CEO of ELAK Health Inc. She graduated from the Loma Linda University School of Pharmacy and continued her post-graduate residency career at the Veterans Affairs HealthCare system in Southern California. Dr. Almilli is a certified Improvement Advisor with extensive clinical and executive leadership experiences - driving execution for healthcare organizations, leading them to remarkable organizational successes. Additionally, she is a clinical provider specializing in chronic conditions management, with special interest in cardiovascular diseases.Dr. Almilli is a compassionate, eager and empathetic advanced clinical ambulatory care pharmacist provider. Her passion is driven by the bonds she builds with her patients and physicians over the course of their journey and the enjoyment she holds in keeping them engaged while saving thousands of dollars. Her patients call her “a true healer” and “lifetime health coach.” Physicians call her a “wonder worker with a magic wand.”In her spare time, Dr. Almilli enjoys spending days on the beach, fashion browsing, and spending time with her husband and friends. As someone who spent decades experiencing God and a faith practice in a limited, narrow way - I am always looking to learn and stretch my perspective. Kerri Naber and I delve into an honest chat - touching on various aspects of faith plus the challenges of navigating religious constructs. She and I merge and diverge as we reflect on our experiences - in and out of organized religion. We talk prayer, intuition, Holy Spirit, and the merits of raising kids with a faith practice and without. I also love Kerri's take on spirituality from the millennial's perspective. Guest Bio:Kerri Naber has an educational background in Social Work with a Mental Health concentration. She used her degree in the non-profit realm for 14 years via advocating, program direction, and fundraising. Through her personal business, Holy Spirit Hustler, Kerri hosts workshops that provide time, space, and encouragement for women to find their passion, gain confidence and build community. That first step of business ownership led the way for Kerri to retire her non-profit career in 2022 and start her own consulting company, Naber Engagement Consulting. Kerri is a Visionary Director for entrepreneurs. By identifying and solving blind spots, Kerri helps business owners thrive. It took us a few minutes to get rolling in this episode because I was speaking carefully…and NOT because Tiffany K. Martin makes conversation difficult (quite the contrary - she is an exceptional woman). I was playing it safe.We talk about life's ever-shifting rules of engagement and our instinct of playing it safe or staying silent so we don't “rock the boat.” And then, we dig into the value of rocking boats anyway. We won't always tackle new information beautifully - but we can continue to show up, learn and grow. Guest Bio:Tiffany K. Martin is an equity-minded thought leader, speaker, presenter and author, and she is the CEO of TKMartin Consulting LLC. Never underestimate the power of a person who can connect to their truth and bring THAT voice forward! Maybe you relate, as I do, to the individual who is detached from their real feelings and stories. How often do we find ourselves in a battle with the constant chatter in our head - delivering words that represent half-truths, people-pleasing, and performative behavior. I am a classic example of a person who communicated with a need for validation and peace - keeping everything palatable. I am convinced that is why I was called into my work as a communications coach. Many of us are called into the work we NEED. I'm the kind of person who dreams and plans in grand fashion. For years, I operated under a notion that big ideas require even bigger action plans - and that small actions are insignificant and a waste of time. And predictably, my workload became unsustainable and I would stall in overwhelm. Here's a newsflash if you resonate with me - starting simply is not only incredibly effective - it is a reliable entry point to getting what we want and need.In this episode I speak with Kathleen Klug, coach and author of Start With ONE. We have another kind of “me too” movement on our hands. This conversation with Eunice Brownlee blew my mind as she shared her personal experience with domestic abuse and the inequities often found in the family court system. It is enough to experience abuse at the hands of another; but to endure additional pain inflicted by the very system meant to arbitrate justice and provide protection? Disheartening.BUT conversations like this one change things! Eunice explains the often missed distinctions between domestic violence and domestic abuse - and that information holds the power to liberate many more of us.I gained an expanded perspective that allows me to contribute to meaningful solutions instead of looking away and simply assuming “it's all ok” (that's code for hoping I never have to deal with it myself). This convo is an opportunity to witness another person's story - thus, delivering more hopeful perspective that invites change instead of preserving the status quo.*A loving warning about our content, this episode references acts of domestic violence and homicide within families. Please take care in listening.Guest Bio:Eunice Brownlee has spent her life telling stories across many mediums. I decided to converse with one of my besties, Christina Fichera, to unpack the past year and some difficult stuff that we both are processing. We approach the conversation from varied perspectives given our lives are so different; Christina is in her 30's and I am in my 50's. I've been married twice and have adult kids and didn't build a career until the last five years. Christina hasn't married or had kids yet, and built a significant career over the past two decades. We share a newfound understanding that beauty can coexist with pain and end up processing our recent challenges through that lens.We also agree that normalizing discussions around struggle can be incredibly useful - but simultaneously wrestle with the belief that talking about this stuff might come too close to “airing our dirty laundry.”The fear of sharing our emotions and exposing our personal journey with others is delicate. Like many, we wonder how we will be perceived when we divulge setbacks - will it affect our career or relationships?Does our candor make us appear less competent despite being damn good at what we do?Do our stories present an appearance of weakness or instability that can limit opportunities?Have we learned discernment around when to share and with who?Join the conversation.Resources mentioned in this episode:We refer to the following books; The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel Van Der Kolk, MD and Big Magic by Elizabeth GilbertWe mention the We Can Do Hard Things podcast. The stories we believe shape our lives; even the ones we discard influence us. But what about the stories we boldly decide to rewrite? This past year, I decided that many of my personal narratives were not serving me — they were even harmful at points. Ronna Detrick and I uncover the root of some of our personal stories and how they've influenced us, whether they emerge from sacred spiritual texts, mythology, history, or stories passed down through family. Story is our collective language and it has greater influence on us than we might realize. Investigating long-held tales and revising them where appropriate can be powerful.“…What if I saw myself as a woman who has lived a million lives…who has made [tough] decisions in her past and has had hard things happen? And, what if I saw a woman who has endured and persevered - who is brilliant - who can step into a conversation and hold her own - who has plenty to say and sees herself worthy of that conversation…” Ronna DetrickNo matter who you are - imagine this way of being in the world. We are reexamining the stories we tell and have been told.Guest Bio:Ronna Detrick left the church and its dogma nearly twenty years ago but took the stories of women with her. Over the past two decades she has reimagined these sacred texts, peeled back centuries of patriarchal harm, and given the women within the voice, agency, and honor they have always deserved. Ronna combines her Master of Divinity degree with decades of coaching and spiritual direction, training and public speaking, corporate leadership and entrepreneurship. She shocked and delighted her audience in her provocative TEDx presentation, where she turned the traditional biblical story of Eve on its head, challenged the embedded and assumed doctrine, and presented an Eve who inspires and empowers women instead of shaming and silencing them. After living most of her life in the Pacific Northwest, she is now just minutes from the Atlantic Ocean in Hampstead, NC, where she writes, drinks strong coffee, has beautiful conversations with her clients, and cannot be dissuaded from the belief that her two daughters are the most amazing humans on the planet.Website: https://ronnadetrick.comInstagram: @ronnadetrickFacebook: @ronna.detrickLinkedIn: @ronnadetrick"subscribe" https://ronnadetrick.substack.comAmazon Books Rewriting Eve: Rescuing Women's Stories from the Bible and Reclaiming Them as Our Own Jen Oliver holds space for those who want to elevate and amplify their voice. We wade into deeper waters with our grown up version of the sex talk we never got as kids. Allison's husband joins us to bring his very REAL perspective. Check out the last episode if you missed it. Bottom line, like many, I am slowly dismantling old ways of being and the belief systems that do not serve me nor my relationships! My guest, Allison Carver, has gone before me - doing this work in her own world and now guiding others on a similar path. Our candid conversation only gets better with Ian in the mix - revealing his viewpoint on sex, relationship, and the stuff some of our partners may be thinking and feeling. Our Guest(s): Allison Carver is a certified Life, Mastery, and Sensuality Coach. With 15 years of coaching experience she now focuses on educating women of all ages about their personal sexuality. She operates from a mindset that says, “It's not about age it's about where you are on your self-discovery journey.”Married for 23 years to her best friend and beloved - Allison assumed that the sex life they enjoyed was “good enough.” A number of years ago, she took a deep dive into her own physiology and sexuality, as well as her limiting beliefs, micro traumas, and stories. In that process, she discovered all that still held her back from receiving life's pleasures fully. Allison's life completely transformed and she extends the same to others through private coaching, workshops, and a custom online courses.Allison acknowledges the many explanations for why we have been kept in the dark about our bodies and then challenges the status quo. She is passionate about lighting the path for others with her stories and experience. She delivers much needed support to her clients who value compassionate and non-judgmental guidance.Ian Carver, is a 25+ year Law Enforcement professional, long time business owner, LE instructor and speaker. Nearing retirement, Ian is passionate about sharing his knowledge to not only benefit the service and concern peace officers can bring to their communities and their own safety, but also to improve the personal lives of public safety professionals as they navigate through their careers and relationships in the hopes of making it to the final day of work mentally, physically, and spiritually intact. Yep, we are going there. A real conversation about sex without common misconceptions and shame. I have been pretty disconnected from my body much of my life and am slowly dismantling old ways of being and the belief systems that do not serve me. My guest, Allison Carver, has gone before me - doing this work in her own life and now guiding others on a similar path. I have always been an explorer with regard to self-help, personal growth, therapy, recovery and the like. This year I began hearing of people's experiences with plant medicines as a means of doing deeper work on the mental and physical pain that can significantly impact our lives. AND then I met Dr. Alya Ahmad and Dr. Tasnim Khan - two physicians (and sisters) with stunning resumes and extensive experience in medicine and patient care - who left conventional medicine and started their own practice providing Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy. Their team is alleviating their clients' suffering from conditions such as PTSD, depression, anxiety, chronic pain and more. What I LOVE is the path that brought them to this space. These are two doctors who finally acknowledged that they, as healers, needed help too. In their words, “We can only be as good for our patients as we are for ourselves…” Yes, to that, count me in.Ketamine is legal and many are familiar with it as an anesthetic. But when used in a supervised and intentional setting it also relaxes a patient to a place where the nervous system is disarmed, mental chatter can be quieted, and deeper therapeutic work can begin. We talk all things Ketamine as it relates to our personal healing journeys and my mind is forever shifted as to what is possible. Our Guests:Dr. Tasnim Khan is a Primary Care Physician and Harvard University trained health care executive with over 27 years of experience in the healthcare field. She has owned, operated, and profitably exited health care practices and an IPA in the US and in the Middle East.As a healthcare executive, Dr Khan has held leadership roles in private and public organizations in the US and abroad in countries such as Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. She led key nationwide innovative initiatives such as building a social health insurance scheme in Qatar ahead of the FIFA world cup event, private equity greenfield and brownfield launches of multispecialty clinics and hospitals in Dubai and the UK. Dr Khan also has deep experience in the health insurance sector, with her experiences working for United Healthcare, Aetna International and a large independent physician association in the Bay Area. She has also been a key member of the non-profit health sector in Sacramento, providing healthcare access to the underserved, uninsured and refugee populations.Yet, her deepest passion lies in helping people optimize their wellbeing and advocate for their health despite a very complicated and fragmented health care system. She is constantly seeking ways to extend health span and focus on prevention rather than the sick model of care that is embedded in current treatment paradigms of our health care system. The opportunity to offer people a refreshed model of care also includes mental health. The modalities to address mental health are rapidly changing and replacing the dated therapeutics and approaches that are no longer serving peoples needs to heal from within. Dr Khan is excited to be able to learn, teach and offer these new treatment paradigms to people in need. IN 2021, she partnered with a colleague to open one of Sacramento's first holistic mental health center, providing legal psychedelics with therapy and holistic wellness.Dr. Alya Ahmad is a former Associate Professor of Pediatrics at UCSF, with experience in academic and private settings overseas and in Texas and California. She is fellowship trained in Integrative Medicine, psychedelic-assisted therapy, and Ketamine-assisted therapy. She is also training as a MAPS provider through the Integrative Psychiatry Institute.Dr. Ahmad is also a mother, immigrant, and woman of color who remains a continuous learner and educator. Having witnessed the effects of trauma and social inequities, her journey as a healer focuses on treating the neediest of populations. As clinical faculty at Baylor College of Medicine and UCSF, Dr. Ahmad teaches better ways to care for children and their families. She founded programs that emphasize “whole” person care and the narrative medicine process for children with special needs, Down syndrome, obesity and other patients requiring complex care consultation services.Dr. Ahmad harnesses the methodology of Narrative Medicine learned during her training at Columbia University to teach and practice medicine through compassion-based inquiry as a means of addressing illness in light of the overall landscape of a patient's life. She believes natural and holistic paths to healing are possible with integrative and psychedelic medicines and therapies. Her mantra for care is simple; healing the self and others must include empathy and the respectful fusion of self-wisdom, ancient and novel therapies. I appreciate this conversation with guest, Lisa May Bennett, about our shared history around grey-area drinking, sobriety, and the way in which addictive patterns can keep us stuck. We talk about our personal journeys with alcohol and how it can get in the way of closely-held dreams. Full disclosure - Lisa has embraced sobriety and I have had short sprints with it.We talk about the paradox of accepting a seemingly good life but forsaking ALL that is possible because we don't want to give up that ONE thing. In Lisa's case, giving up drinking altogether was essential to pursuing her goal of becoming a writer and published author. She did it! IIn my case, I'm still asking a lot of questions of myself…Guest Bio:Lisa May Bennett is a repeat late bloomer and the author of My Unfurling: Emerging from the Grip of Anxiety, Self-Doubt, and Drinking.
