Many of us are annoyed by non-Christians. They mock our beliefs, criticize our way of life, and undermine us at every turn. If you’re honest with yourself, you probably would be happy to have a world with only Christians–real Christians–in it, right? However, this is not God’s heart–at least not right now. In today’s episode, my father, Vince Finnegan, reveals God's deep, active loving compassion for humanity. No better example of God’s heart for the lost can be found than looking to his son. Jesus embodied that compassion, tirelessly ministering to the hurting, the outcast, and the spiritually blind. Rather than seeing the lost as an annoyance to be tolerated or–even worse–enemies to be defeated in a never-ending culture war, it’s time to see unbelievers as precious souls in need of grace. Listen in and be inspired to develop a heart that feels, sees, and acts like God's.   Listen on Spotify   Listen on Apple Podcasts —— Links —— Support Restitutio by donating here Join our Restitutio Facebook Group and follow Sean Finnegan on X @RestitutioSF Leave a voice message via SpeakPipe with questions or comments and we may play them out on the air Who is Sean Finnegan?  Read his bio here Get Finnegan’s book, Kingdom Journey to learn about God’s kingdom coming on earth as well as the story of how Christianity lost this pearl of great price. God gave the ascended Jesus “all authority in heaven and earth.” Matthew 28:18-20   Before the ascension, Yahweh worked with the four living creatures, the seven spirits, 24 elders, and the countless angels. Ephesians 1:18-23   Jesus is the head of the church. Hebrews 1:1-4   Jesus is not above Yahweh, rather alongside carrying out his Father's will. In Acts, we see God at work with His Son through Jesus' disciples. Luke 24:49   God's power is given to each follower doing His work in the world. Acts 2:1-4   The holy spirit provides God's power within each believer. Acts 2:1-4, 15-18, 22-24, 33-36   Jesus is anointed prophet, priest, and king. We see God reigning in His Son through his disciples with holy spirit. Acts 2:36-39   God is at work within His people. “For it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure” (Phi 2:13). Acts 3:1-16 Acts 5:12-16, 28-32   God is working in His people just as He did in the Gospels through His Son. John 14:23, 26The post God According to Acts first appeared on Living Hope.

It occurs 8 times (1:2; 2:14, 15, 17 20; 4:3; 6:15, 23). 3   “Blessed” is the Greek word eulogetos and means well-spoken of. We get the English “eulogize” from this word (1:6, 12, and 14). Verse 2 states the relationship we have with God and Jesus; verse 3 states the relationship God has with Jesus. “Heavenly places” is the invisible spiritual environment or realm, as contrasted with the visible, tangible environment we call earth. 4-5   God loves you, called you, and wants you. God desires a love relationship with you that is real, personal, and everlasting. The “us” is those to whom the Epistle is addressed: 1:1 to the saints, the faithful in Christ Jesus, those who have already responded to the call.  Our freewill choice is not predetermined by God; (2 Chronicles 15:2, 4, 15; Matthew 7:7-11; Deuteronomy 4:29; Proverbs 8:17). The point is by God's grace, not your work, you are called and made to be His child. 7   Israel's freedom from the slavery of Egypt is a type for our redemption (Exodus 15:13; Deuteronomy 7:8; Romans 3:24; Colossians 1:14). 8   Lavished his grace upon us – the Greek verb used expresses the superabundance of God's giving, the overflow as of a fountain from a deep and abundant source. 9   The great mystery is a major topic of the Epistle that will be revealed. We are reminded over and over the blessings we have are according to God's kindness. 10   When all the times and seasons which the Father has determined are full, the age-long purpose which He planned in Christ will attain its fullness. By [wbt_preacher_link preacher=”Vince Finnegan”] Isaiah 53 foretells God's plan of salvation through Jesus Christ with magnificent clarity. The crux of the revelation is that the sinless Messiah is the sacrificial offering as the substitutionary payment for the sins of all humanity, thereby providing atonement (reconciliation) with God for all those who believe. Isaiah 52:10   God's plan for our salvation is set forth Isaiah 52:13   Before the servant's suffering is set forth, his victorious glory is foretold. In 53:10, after the sufferings are described, his glory again is stated. Isaiah 52:14   Uncharacteristically in the Scriptures, Jesus' appearance is stated twice, here and 53:2 Isaiah 52:15   His form was so disfigured that he no longer resembled a man. Isaiah 53:1-2   Jesus looked like a regular guy. Isaiah 53:3   The Hebrew word for “sorrows” is also translated pain (2 Chronicles 6:29; Job 33:19; and Psalm 69:26…). The Hebrew word that is translated “grief” in verses 3 and 4 occurs 24 times and only here as “grief.” Everywhere else it is sickness (15), illness (3), disease (1), and affliction (1). Our understanding of  “grief” is much different than sickness or illness. Isaiah 53:4   The word “grief” could have been translated “sickness,” and the word “sorrows” as “pain.” Isaiah 53:5   Well-being is the Hebrew word “shalom” and most often is rendered as “peace.” However, “shalom” has a fuller meaning than just peace. It is an overall sense of fulness, soundness, and completeness in mind, body, and estate. Matthew 8:16-17   The context is unquestionably physical healing and is a quotation from Isaiah 53:4. 1 Peter 2:24   The book of Peter connects another verse with Isaiah 53. The Greek word “sozo” is most often translated saved and considered to refer to spiritual salvation, the new birth, eternal life, but like the word “shalom,” it has a fuller meaning that includes physical healing and deliverance. The blessings were there not only because of her loyalty to Naomi, but more so to Yahweh. Deuteronomy 32:9-14   Figuratively, the idiom symbolizes Yahweh as the Protector.  Psalms 36:7; 57:1; 91:4 17   Boaz showed great kindness to Ruth; perhaps his mother's influence had something to do with this. Matthew 1:5 – Her name was Rahab. 20   The words “closest relative” could be translated “redeemer” and is best understood as “kinsmen-redeemer”. The ESV translated it “one of our redeemers”. As a kinsman-redeemer, under the Mosaic Law, Boaz could fulfill the duty of preserving the name of the dead by marrying Ruth. The responsibilities of the redeemer included: Numbers 35:19 The word “revenger” is the same word “kinsman-redeemer”. He is to avenge the death of a murdered relative. Deuteronomy 25:5-10 He is to marry the childless widow of his deceased brother.  1 Timothy 5 25:25 He is to buy back family land that had been sold. 25:47-49  He is to buy a family member who had been sold as a slave. 25:35 He is to look after needy and helpless members of the family; let them live with you if need be. In all of this, we see the loving, compassionate Father caring for His children in need. Matthew 6:43-48   We are to be like God. God's point of view, regardless of ours, is the truth. 2:11-12   In this state, we groped about in life trying to connect to some identity that provided some kind of significance. We did not acknowledge this identity (the fact of being who or what a person is), rather we connected with something else that provided a false identity. Ephesians 2:4-10   In Christ, the old person you were is now dead, and the new person you are is now alive. He wants a genuine love relationship with His children; therefore, He wants all to be saved and come to a knowledge of the truth. John 13:34-35   The attraction of the love we manifest to each other stands out as a beacon of light in a very dark world. Galatians 6:9-10   We are God's family and are connected by love and concern for one another. Deuteronomy 4:9-10; 6:1, 2, 6, 7, 18-25   God emphatically instructs us to pass the truth about Him on to the next generations. Matthew 18:1-5   The capacity for people to learn seems to be its best when we are children. Children learn a language basically by listening to others and simple instruction given by parents and caregivers. Jesus gives the total reversal of human value scales. Children were normally attended to after others, not looked up to as of primary significance. Matthew 19:13-15; Mark 10:13-16   Humility, innocence, receptiveness, or trustfulness Matthew 21:15-16   The children got it! Acts 2:38 and 39 Psalm 78:1-7   One of the most effective ways to align with God's desire is to teach our children. This exhortation is not only to parents but to the family of God. Jesus did not have biological children. Pro. 22:6 Deuteronomy 24:17-22   The frequent concern God expresses for orphans must be acknowledged. Many of us were raised by parents who did not know the Scriptures and the concepts of godliness, so in a sense, we were spiritual orphans. The post Reaching Children first appeared on Living Hope.

Matthew 28:18-20   The great commission to the church is not only to help people receive salvation, but also to become disciples. John 8:31-26   Those who accept the Lordship of Christ and continue in his word become disciples. We should want God's desire to be ours also. Matthew 22:14   Many are called, but few are chosen. John 10:27   God is at work in the world reconciling people back to Himself.  The chosen hear His voice; this happens between God and the person. You cannot make that happen, nor should you try. 2 Chronicles 15:2, 4, and 15   God honors free will, and so must we. Matthew 5:14-16; Philippians 2:15-16   Light attracts people to, and hypocrisy drives people away from God. John 13:34-35   Love is the light that attracts people. Arrogance, condescension, superiority, judgmentalism, condemnation, being controlling, and being bossy are behaviors that will drive away most people, especially alcoholics and addicts who generally are very rebellious. Humility, approachability, relatability, acceptance, compassion, and loving encouragement draw people. Very few people really care about others. Numbers 13:24-33; Deuteronomy 9:13   People need help accepting four imperative realities:  1) I need help, 2) I cannot help myself, 3) the Almighty God of love wants to help, 4) I must seek His help. These vital points can be powerfully communicated by sharing your testimony and the Scriptures. The post Reaching Alcoholics and Addicts first appeared on Living Hope.

James 5:3   Their emphasis was on saving up for their last days, but their actions will be punished in “the last days.” Luke 12:13-21   To make plans and save for the latter years of your life can be wise and compassionate in that you will not become a financial burden to your family or dependent on the government. LHIM Weekly Bible Teachings

By [wbt_preacher_link preacher=”Vince Finnegan”] The Epistle was probably the first written after Jesus' ascension and before Paul revealed the mystery. Many themes correspond with the Sermon on the Mount. First sent to the Christian Jews who dispersed from Israel into Asia Minor, this letter contains many practical concepts of truth which are applicable to all believers. Three vital principles we will focus on are: 1) trials can strengthen our relationship with God; 2) personal accountability; and 3) we must do the word, not just hear it. 1:1-2   Trials are something that test a person's endurance or forbearance. This is translated in the KJV and in the NASB in verse 13 as temptation or tempted. Two major types are tribulation (John 16:33; Romans 8:35) and lust (James 1:14-15). Every time we resist trials by seeking God's help, we strengthen our relationship with Him, thereby causing joy. 3-4   “Perfect and complete, lacking in nothing” are 3 ways of saying the same thing. 5   James 3:13-17 – Two different kinds of wisdom 6   Godly faith is always founded upon God's words, written or revelation. 8   Double-mindedness is switching back and forth between human wisdom and God's wisdom, just like the waves of the sea. 9-11   The poor tend toward humility, and the rich toward pride. Even the rich will face the humiliation of death (Psalm 49). God works with the humble but resists the proud. James 4:6-10; 1 Peter 5:5 12   Those who persevere under trial will receive the crown of life (zoe). Romans 8:35-39 15   One of the great keys to Christian living is personal accountability. People, nor circumstances, nor situations determine our inner life. We do by how we respond. The great deception we all face is believing that outside things determine our inside realities. Consider Jesus on the cross, Paul in Acts 16, and Philippians 1. 17   Father of lights – Psalm 36:9; No variation or shifting shadow. Deuteronomy 32:3-4; Lamentations 3:22-23 18-21   Anger does not bring God's righteousness; the implanted word does. 22-27   Be doers, not hearers only. If your knowledge of God does not result in love for God and love for others, something is not right. The post James One first appeared on Living Hope.

Luke 24:49 The promise of the Father is to be clothed with power. Acts 1:4-5 “Clothed” in Luke is similar to “baptized” in Acts. The power that the promise brings is not minuscule, rather huge, encompassing everything about your new life in Christ. You have power! 6-8 The promise of the Father is to receive power with the holy spirit. The spirit empowers you to be a witness of Christ. The life you now live shines forth the resurrected Christ. You are not the same, and others can see the difference in you. Matthew 5:13-16 The lifestyle that Jesus put forth in the Sermon of the Mount could not be implemented in full force until the spirit came, but once the power was given, believers were empowered to live the godly life that Jesus himself lived. We are now empowered to live like he did. Romans 8:5-6 Flesh = death; spirit = life and peace 7- 8 Flesh is hostile toward God and cannot please Him. 11 We now have a life-giving spirit that is life in all its aspects. We have the ability and authority to live the good, godly life. We must believe it and claim it as our own. The fight we have with the flesh is fueled by the evil one, who is called the tempter and the accuser. He tries to trap us in an unvirtuous cycle. We must use our God-given power to get off the merry-go-round. 12-15 The evil one also uses intimidation like fear to keep us in slavery, but the chains are broken; the prison door is wide open. Deuteronomy 6:4 Yahweh's name means existing one, eternal one, present one. Whenever God's people stayed faithful to Him, their enemies were annihilated before them. If they wavered from Him and repented and turn back to Him again, their adversities were not only eliminated but utterly destroyed. Isaiah 36:1-22 Sennacherib, king of Assyria, foolishly thought his successful military conquests were of his own doing. He told the inhabitants of Jerusalem that he would defeat Yahweh as he did with all the pagan gods. Isaiah 37:14-20 Hezekiah (whose name means “my strength is the Lord” or “the Lord is my strength”) did the right thing – he went to Yahweh in prayer. (The name “Sennacherib” means bramble of destruction.) 21-29 God declares that not only does he know of the Assyrians' boasting but that her achievements have only been possible because God has planned them, verses 23-27. But now, she has gone too far, and God will prevent her from achieving the ultimate end of their campaign – the capture of Jerusalem 36-38 185,000 died without Hezekiah lifting a finger, and Sennacherib was killed by his own son in the temple of a pagan god. Joy is a feeling of great pleasure and happiness. Synonyms are great pleasure, jubilation, triumph, exultation. Galatians 5:13-18, 22 Walking by the spirit is the way to joy. Fruit is the result of a healthy tree. The tree or source for joy is walking by the spirit. Philippians 1:3-11 Paul's understanding and confidence in prayer produced joy as he prayed for those he was restricted from seeing. Joy is connected to prayer because prayer is part of walking by the spirit. 1:12-18 Paul decided to focus upon the good and not the bad. Controlling our thinking is a big part of walking by the spirit. Romans 12:1-2 19-24 Paul was at the stage in his life where death was a consideration because of his age and circumstance. His decision was selfless. Serving others is part of walking by the spirit. 2:3-13 Walking by the spirit produces the fruit of joy which includes dying to self and serving others. Self-focus is walking by the flesh and the pathway to depression, fear, a troubled state of mind, resentment, rage. 14-18 Walking by the spirit is allowing God to work in you to do His will and not yours; hence, it is not grumbling and disputing. Living this way includes delight in working together with God and not being engrossed in human nature. 28-30 Fellowshipping with like-minded believers is also included in walking by the spirit. 4:1-9 Prayer, focused thinking on the things of God and not the things of the world, is walking by the spirit and produces the fruit of joy. Compulsion to dwell upon the negative at times seems the moral or virtuous thing to do, but is it? Paul was in prison when he wrote this. 10-17 I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me.The post Fruit of the Spirit – Joy by Vince Finnegan first appeared on Living Hope.

Isaiah 14:24, 27; 46:9-10; Psalm 33:11 He means what He says and says what He means, and we can be assured He will do what He promises to do. God's dream, His purpose for the ages, is a love relationship with you that is real, personal, and everlasting. Ephesians is a brief, but full, view of Christianity. Genesis 1:1-5 The first day, God created space, the heavens and earth, and time, day, and night. Revelation 4:8 He is the one who was, who is, and who is to come. Exodus 3:14 “I am” the existent one. He is everywhere present all of the time. Isaiah 55:8-9 God's ways and thoughts are much greater than ours. Romans 11:33 Psalm 139:1-6 “Wonderful” means incomprehensible. 7-16 God is with you everywhere you go, and He knows what is really happening even if no one else knows. 23 Why would the psalmist ask God to search him if he already acknowledged God is with him and knows what is going on? Ignorance and wrong teaching are devasting to our understanding of Yahweh. Exodus 43:6-7 God's character, His virtues (moral standards), are never compromised, nor are they ever contradictory. Deuteronomy 10:17; 32:3-4 God is just with no injustice at all. Psalm 89:13-14 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne. Psalm 99:1-5 Righteousness, justice, and equitableness originate from the mind of God. Man does not have the ability to determine what is right on his own. Our flawed human nature and the evil in the age that is controlled by Satan impede us. Romans 11:33-34 Almighty God is the sovereign King overall and has infinite wisdom. He knows the end from the beginning. He also knows what is in the heart of every man and woman. The book of Proverbs says wisdom has always been with God. He has a purpose for the ages which He guarantees will be fulfilled. These are the things that qualify Him to be the only right judge. Isaiah 55:8-9 For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways Deuteronomy 13:1-18 Decisive seemingly harsh punishment 2 Kings 21:1-18 Manasseh received God's mercy and forgiveness. Often we see two very similar incidents handled in opposite ways. Romans 9:14, 20, 21 Man should not be so foolish as to question God's judgment; rather we are instructed to praise Him for His judgments. Deuteronomy 10:17-21; 16:19-20 God is holy; be you holy. God is just; be you just. Be like God. Jesus teaches us not to be concerned with others dealing justly with us. Do not be concerned about receiving justice. Be concerned about being just. Deuteronomy 19:14-21 God is the author and administrator of proportionate retribution and compensation (a just punishment and restitution for wrong deeds). The principle was not to sanction revenge but to prevent the excess of evil and crime. Every society has to have these laws, or something similar, in order to survive because of the evil nature of man and Satan's influence upon this age. Matthew 5:38-42 In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus instructs us to surrender our personal and legal rights so as to live peacefully. Isaiah 11:1ff When Jesus returns and rules the world, then justice will prevail. The post God Is Just by Vince Finnegan first appeared on Living Hope.

Exodus 7:10-12 The serpent symbolized the beginning and end of time and fertility. (Genesis 3:1) The golden cobra on Pharaoh's headdress was a symbol of the supreme ruler and of his power. Uroborus, a circular symbol of a serpent swallowing its own tail, was a symbol of rejuvenation and eternity, an endless cycle of beginning and ending. “Pharaoh hardened his heart” 4:21; 7:3,13,14 (stubborn), 22; 8:15, 19, 32; 9:7, 12, 34, 35; 10:1, 20, 27; 11:10; 14:4, 8 (18X). The love cycle — God loves you — you love God – you love others The ADC's of loving your neighbor — Accept God's love; Die to self-interest; Compassion Accept God's love (Love begins here) Ezekiel 16 and Hosea 2 Allegory of Yahweh's love to an unfaithful bride 1 John 4:10 and 19 We love because He loves us. You cannot love others like Christ did without accepting God's love for you. John 5:19-20 The Father loves the Son. When we accept God's love, we find ourselves. When we understand and accept God's purpose, we find our own purpose. Die to self-interest Matthew 16:21-26 When we do not find self-worth in God's love, we will always be tempted to find it elsewhere. The human tendency is to manipulate people and situations to feel good about self. To love like Jesus loved, we must die to self, eliminating the desire for acceptance or validation from others. Genesis 3:7-10 After the fall, man's relationship with God was marred with fear. Humans are born with two innate fears — the fear of falling and the fear of loud noises. Maybe fear of God and people is also innate? Two Extreme Examples 1 Samuel 9:2 Saul was taller than any of the people. 18-21 He did not think highly of himself. 10:9 God changed his heart; however, he still battled with an inferiority complex. 10:20-24 Why was he hiding? 15: 15:18-24 We have often seen in our day how a political leader, because of fear of the people, will do that which is not right. We see this in Christian leaders also who compromise God's Word to appease the people because of fear. Many religious organizations have problems because of the fear of losing people or to influence better attendance. After he sinned, the rest of his life he was jealous of David to extent of murder. Galatians 2:11-14 Peter was afraid of James; fear can make cowards of us all. Our concern is not controlling our fears. Often people say, “You have to learn to live with your fears,” but the Scriptures teach us to conquer fear. Different positive thinking classes, seminars, and books teach how to control fear so you can live with it. However, when we believe and act on God's Word, we will be released from the bondage of fear. 2 Timothy1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of timidity [fear], but of power and love and discipline [KJV sound mind, ESV self-control]. POWER John 20:19 Hiding for fear of the Jews who three days earlier crucified Jesus. Acts 1:8; 4:5-12; 5:27-32 The holy spirit eliminated the fear. Our faith and the relationship we have with God and Christ holds a decisive factor in relating with people. LOVE Romans 8:14-16; 29-39 1 John 4:18-21 Perfect love casts out fear. All people want to be wanted, love to be loved; die to self and think of the other. Sound mind, self-control Philippians 4:6-10; 1 Corinthians 10:13 He was in prison during the sunset years of his life contemplating whether he should live or die, yet he had no fear. Why did he have confidence, trust, and faith? He prayed and controlled his thinking to focus on scriptural verities. The post Facing Anxiety: Fear and Relationships by Vince Finnegan first appeared on Living Hope.

The purpose of the ages is God's desire for a love relationship with humanity that is real, personal, and everlasting. Deuteronomy 6:1-15 The Shema (hear or listen) is about relationship with our God. Exodus 3:15 For 6,828 times, His name was written in the Hebrew text. Psalms 83:18; 86:9-12; 34:3; 69:30; 105:1 Isaiah 12:1-6 If the translators would have put “Yahweh” instead of “LORD,” perhaps there be less confusion with Jesus since the great appellation in the NT for Jesus is “Lord” over 600 times. Identity theft caused the loss of His name and confused His person with the Trinity. The purpose of the ages is God's desire for a love relationship with humanity that is real, personal, and everlasting. Jeremiah 7:22-31 What did God want from Israel? Obedience or relationship? What does God want from the church today? Ephesians 1:16-23 God wants us to know His calling, His inheritance, and His power. Ezekiel 36:28-29; 37:23-27 What does God want? Psalm 105:1-10 Your Father wants a relationship with you. What pleases God? What does God want? The great purpose of the ages has been and still is that God desires a love relationship with humanity that is real, personal, and everlasting. Psalm 105:1-3 Joy and rejoice in Him; speak of Him. Join Him in the work He is doing in the world. Who you are, your identity, is realized when you believe God loves you. The purpose of your life is realized when your focus is on loving Him.
