SIDE HUSTLE 13. Norman Mailer: TOUGH GUYS DON'T DANCE and CREMASTER 2Every ranking must have its worst, and this week's episode aims to shoot to the bottom of the Season X bucket with Norman Mailer as our chosen actor-director. TGTPTU welcomes back its junior cohost Jack after a long hiatus to join us on this atrocity to good sense as we cover two unwatchable films: the first, TOUGH GUYS DON'T DANCE (1987), nominated for four Independent Spirit Awards and seven Golden Raspberries and unwatchable for its wildly shifting tones throughout melodramatic flashbacks within flashbacks, and the second, CREMASTER 2 (1999), the gorgeously shot fourth entry in artist Matthew Barney's five-part Cremaster Cycle unwatchable as its viewing restricted to art museums and its limited series DVDs selling for $100k. Shot on location in Provincetown, the occasionally great Ryan O'Neal (Barry Lyndon, Paper Moon) plays Tim Madden in the Mailer written and directed, Golan-Globus production of Tough Guys Don't Dance. The 80's fever dream makes both St. Elmo's Fire and The Bonfire of the Vanities feel rewatchable as protagonist Tim Madden parades through amnesia, flashbacks, adultery, and homophobic reactions in a convoluted plot involving alcohol, triple-crosses, swingers, murder, cocaine, psychics, swingers, alcohol, cocaine, tattoos, cocaine, and swingers with a little sex and booze and Columbian marching powder sprinkled in. While Mailer had directed three improvisational movies in the 1960s (including that one where Mailer bit off a piece of Rip Torn's ear), Tough Guys Don't Dance demonstrates why it was Mailer's first and only narrative film to direct. Also bypassing narrative conventions, Björk's ex- (their breakup the subject of her 2015 album Vulnicura) a.k.a. artist/director Matthey Barney's filmic work traverses worlds alchemic and ordinary and was well worth the plane ticket to bring TGTPTU's three hosts back together for a screening of the film at the museum where it was showing that one time around when the recording happened and definitely not a pirated copy of this impossible to rent or purchase film. Follow our hosts' dulcet voices as we recount the film's nearly wordless journey from séance to bees covering in a woman in a plexiglass corset penetrated by a large phallus to a death metal drummer covered in bees on the phone with a gas station attendant the latter of whom will be killed by Gary Gilmore (played by Barney, subject of Mailer's Executioner Song) before the camera heads to a chanting city and a rodeo before heading into a warehouse for a magic show. Norman Mailer plays Harry Houdini and his performance, well, we'd normally ask you to judge for yourself but there's no way in hell you're ever seeing this film, so your loss.  So listen along as we describe one film you don't want to—and another you can't—watch. This week's show will leave you yelling heavenwards alongside Tim Madden in Tough Guys Don't Dance after he discovers his wife is having an affair: “Oh Man! Oh God! Oh Man! Oh God! Oh Man! Oh God! Oh Man! Oh God! Oh Man! Oh God!”THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Twitter: https://twitter.com/thegoodthepoda1YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gBuzzsprout: https://thegoodthepodandtheugly.buzzsprout.com/Letterboxd (follow us!):Ken: Ken KoralJack: jackk1096

(This is a re-issue of Björk's episode from December 2015.) In January 2015, Björk released Vulnicura. She described it as "a complete heartbreak album." And in November, she released Vulnicura Strings, a companion album that stripped away the electronics. In this episode, Bjork breaks down the making of both the original version of the song "Stonemilker," which you're hearing now, as well as the strings version. She traces her writing and recording process for the track, her collaboration with the electronic producer Arca, and why she wanted to make a second version.  For more, visit songexploder.net/björk.

Join Nick Cherryman (University of Warwick) and me for a giggle and a bit of jolly gender jamming in this episode about drag, performance and pantomime. Nick (aka Ibi Profane) gives us some highlights of drag history, explains what posthuman drag might be and why even that is still gendered. Non-British listeners (and holiday enthusiasts) also get a brief intro to panto dames, why they can be so much fun, but also why they can potentially reinforce problematic assumptions about trans* people. With sparkling examples from Björk to the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence and a heartwarming story about a young queer woman, a drag queen and a burger, this episode will be the treat you need.Texts, people and shows mentioned:queer/disrupt https://www.queerdisrupt.com/ “Ibi Profane's Dragged Through History” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PwjcKemYHkDonna Harraway's Cyborg ManifestoJerBer JonesDragulaHungry (@ishehungry)Björk: Utopia, “Virus”, “Mutual Core”, Vulnicura, BiophiliaAndrew Thomas HuangStonewallMarsha P. Aaaaahhh!Questions you should be able to respond to after listening:1. Nick and I briefly reference Donna Harraway's Cyborg Manifesto and the term ‘posthuman'. Please find a definition and an example (this can be artwork, drag, literature, theory, popular culture or whatever you like) for the ‘posthuman' and look up what the Cyborg Manifesto is all about.2. Please create a little glossary of terms that relate to drag or being trans and write a very short definition (can be in key words) for each one. Example: “‘Transvestite' is a term was historically used to describe people who wore clothing of a gender not assigned to them at birth. The term often conflates crossdressers, transgender people and people performing in drag.”3. Can you think of an example of genderfuckery in a literary text?4. What is a Molly House? Which specific one does Nick mention and where were they located?5. What is problematic about pantomimes? What does Nick say about the differences between performance spaces and public spaces in this context?

Welcome to Secrets of Organ Playing Podcast #60! https://www.organduo.lt Today's guest is Sławomir Zubrzycki – outstanding Polish pianist, soloist and chamber musician specializing in performing contemporary music, composer, and constructor of musical instruments. He's a graduate of the Academy of Music in Cracow (1988, piano – prof. T. Żmudziński's class, modern music – prof. A. Kaczyński's class) and The Boston Conservatory of Music (1990-91). Fulbright Scholar. Prize winner at the prestigious Polish Piano Art Festival in Słupsk (1987). Sławomir Zubrzycki has been giving concerts in USA, Germany, Austria, Spain, Great Britain and Ukraine. He has made several recordings for Polskie Nagrania (Polish recording company), Polish Radio and Television. He was a lecturer at Summer Academy of Contemporary Music – Avantgarde Tirol in Austria (2005, 2007). In 2009, Zubrzycki came across the traces of a real rarity – Viola Organista – the instrument designed by Leonardo da Vinci, but which had almost been unknown and forgotten. Fascinated by the facts from the past, in the years 2009-2012 Zubrzycki created his own version of Leonardo da Vinci's design. The premiere recitals of viola organista (October 2013) were a spectacular artistic success that attracted record attendances, gained attention of the international media and over two million viewers on YouTube. His European tours in 2014-2015 included recitals at Stockholm Early Music Festival, Wratislavia Cantans, Ghent Festival of Flanders, Kotor Art Festival, Polish Music Days in Turkey, Ohrid Summer Festival, Milano Classica. In 2015 the first solo album, "Viola organista - The da Vinci sound", was released thanks to support of music lovers from all over the world (from Kickstarter campaign). In 2015, Zubrzycki was also invited by Icelandic singer Björk to record together an acoustic version of her album "Vulnicura". In this conversation, Sławomir shares his insights about how he constructed viola organista and how he learned to play it. It's completely different and unexplored area of music and I hope a lot of organists from all over the world will find much inspiration from it. Enjoy and share your comments below. And don't forget to help spread the word about the SOP Podcast by sharing it with your organist friends. This mix is for Black women who love Björk Guðmundsdóttir. For some of us Björk is one of the guiding forces in the most secret parts of our emotional lives. And there is something to be said about the fact that my deepest, most intimate romantic relationships have been with Black women who speak Björk. She is one of the most brilliant artists of our time, with relevance far beyond the boringly sensational Academy Award swan dress debacle, which on the low, I believe was a challenge to American popular cultural values. Like on some fashion resistance shit. “I thought I could organize freedom, how Scandinavian of me?” During my New York years, I had the opportunity to witness Björk live at the Apollo with three other Black women. Björk at The Apollo? What a combination and what an honorable way to honor the Black folks that get down with her like that. Aside from the sheer weight of the decision to perform in Harlem, we, like thousands of her students, made sure to have loot in hand ready to buy tickets the moment they went on sale. We managed to get tickets, but please understand, in less than five minutes the show was sold out. And to be honest, it wasn’t Harlem or Brooklyn who showed up to see her, which I understand; Björk is ‘strange fiction.’ It was the usual crew at the Apollo concert; former club kids, angsty white women and entitled hipsters. And of course some of us were in the house. My crew and I represented for all the Black women inspired by her audaciousness, by her work ethic, and by her willingness to make whatever screw face necessary to offer ‘love scholarship’ through song. We cheered from the balcony squinting to experience what looked like an Icelandic ball of glitter performing unapologetically to self-composed electro folk music. I will never forget her relationship with the microphone, dancing around it, stepping away from it, looking into it and making it sing her songs. She’s a beast of a live performer. After the concert I kept thinking about how to build on the energy felt from the experience. So I reached out to Greg Tate, one of the only Black men in my life who loves Bjork as much as I do, to discuss the possibility of the Black Rock Coalition’s involvement in a tribute to Björk, at the Apollo Theater no less. The vision was to have my favorite artists, including Tamar Kali, Joi and Taylor McFerrin, to not so much perform, but interpret her music. I believe that only an original interpretation is possible. A night of Björk covers would never do. Later I decided to hold off on the tribute in fear of not having the resources to do the event justice. One cannot half step when the name Björk is attached to a project and slowly but surely my budget fronted on my vision. While a major tribute event was not possible, I kept thinking of ways to express the impact this creature of an artist has had on my artistic and personal development. I’ve turned to Björk’s music so many times for heart education and the inevitable ‘feeling of feelings’ that happen when you find yourself brave enough to face the dark beauty of a song like ‘Unravel’ from the Homogenic album. For years I’ve waited for whatever it is I am supposed to do with this special place that I hold for her work in my heart. It turned out to be this mix, which was partially inspired by the release of her latest and ninth studio album, Vulnicura. My Black girl Bjork tribe was surprised, maybe even betrayed to learn that I don’t love it. It’s brilliant by default, but part of why I love her so much is because she speaks to lovers wherever they are on their journey, excavating lessons buried deep in the nuanced exchanges between intimate partners in any given space and time. A breakup album felt too obvious for me. Before listening to Vulnicura I had to ask myself if I even had the emotional capacity to hold Björk’s heartbreak this winter? Björk’s triple Scorpio heartbreak? Triple Scorpio? What the hell does it mean to be in partnership with a Björk? She’s always been so perfectly naked or ‘Violently Happy?’ But I listened, hoping that I hadn’t become one of those fans who run away when artists are inspired to drive their work in a different direction? I mean I get it. Sometimes you need something epic, a release, to get the hurt out. Marvin did it brilliantly with “Here My Dear,” Nas even did it with his Post Kelis “Life Is Good” album, and I’m sure there are hundreds of other artists who produced entire projects around mourning, or celebrating the ending of a relationship. And there are jewels all up in and through Vulnicura, don’t get it twisted, I know who she is. But did I miss her impersonal cryptic lyrical finesse?” Yes. And do I understand how honest, brave, vulnerable and musically sound it is? Absolutely. So far there is only one song that I can return to, “Atom Dance” and it too is represented on this mix. I’ll be revisiting ‘Vulnicura’ at a later time, certainly a different season. Maybe my European winter was not the right time? But I trust her and my resistance could have everything to do with where I was when it was released, so leave space for me to retract my underwhelm please? I do, however, credit Vulnicura for sending me back to her catalog with the intention to create a Björk syllabus of sorts. I listened to all of her albums and carefully selected songs that have gotten me through and past IT, that have taken me over and under IT. And because she is such an incredible writer, thinker, feeler, this mix will function like a literature review of her discography, yes, music as text. Get into it. Sending special love to Porter Ferbee, a bonafied scholar who can school you on the time and place of almost every song created under the hand of Björk and to Zetoille, for introducing my 1998 self to Bjork on one late night in San Francisco. And to Dream Hampton who while listening to ‘Vespertine’ is quick to point out the genius of her lyricism, calling attention to the lines that turn your ass in circles. I hope this special compilation honors us all.
