Happy Birthday, Blue Man!
Is Jordan Kahn's Meteora on track for a second Michelin star? On this episode of The LA Food Podcast, we dive deep into LA's most ambitious fine-dining jungle—Meteora. After falling for Chef Jordan Kahn's futuristic tasting menu at Vespertine, we head to his Melrose Avenue follow-up to see if the hype (and the hefty price tag) is justified. Is this lush, high-concept, nature-driven restaurant actually deserving of a second Michelin star? We break it down, course by course.Plus, it's Part 4 of our Opening Cafe Esca series with chefs Luke Reyes and Reilly Cox. This week, they walk us through the creative (and chaotic) process of building a food and beverage menu from scratch for their upcoming coastal Italian spot in LA's Arts District. And don't miss our rapid-fire Chef's Kiss / Big Miss segment, featuring TikTok-famous olive oil squeeze bottles, Apple TV's new chef series, and maybe the most aggravating pizza guy on the internet.Helpful Links:Meteora https://meteora.la/TASTE on those pesky squeeze bottles https://tastecooking.com/the-big-squeeze/Careme preview, per The New York Times https://www.nytimes.com/2025/04/29/arts/television/careme-french-chef.htmlEater on Texas Strip https://ny.eater.com/2025/4/25/24416858/texas-renaming-new-york-strip-steak-bill-texas-stripOpening Cafe Esca Part 1 https://open.spotify.com/episode/19HDiV4o0i2dP9ZZ7B7E9BPart 2 https://open.spotify.com/episode/7DoKDMtS74ngrVzjBBkzXIPart 3 https://open.spotify.com/episode/7J8MZ7HGuMIdRvq6zYezUy?si=hXmPzXKrQ9uwKktH3tIEuw–Go check out The Lonely Oyster in Echo Park! https://thelonelyoyster.com/–Get 10% off at House of Macadamias using code "LAFOOD" https://www.houseofmacadamias.com/pages/la-foods
We finally made it to Jordan Kahn's Vespertine in Culver City, which reopened after a hiatus in the Spring of 2024, and earned not one but two Michelin Stars just a few months later. If you've heard people talk about VesperVespertineine, then you know that it elicits strong reactions. Some people can't get enough of Chef Kahn's otherworldly creations, with Michelin describing his food as “visually stunning” and “daringly inventive.” Others, however, walk away deeply confounded, scratching their heads like entire world in the wake of the Luka Doncic trade. I believe the Infatuation called it “unpleasant to consume.” But what did Father Sal and I think of the experience? Listen to find out as we walk you through our entire journey in our trademark, frankly psychotic fashion. Chace is back to answer audience questions with Jordan and Max about this cozy egg nog and latke season, and it's all Jews for Jesus, being Hanukkah curious, top Goldbelly gifts, New Years Eve plans, an almost too chic Christmas tree, hard shell taco insanity, the LA Times food poisoning party, more 101 snubs, the problem with oysters and Hayato, the chances of Vespertine and Taco Bell, Chace learns a cold hard fact, and Modesto Max Thanksgiving talk.
What do the Eater layoffs mean for food media in Los Angeles? Did Bill Addison's review of Vespertine get us more or less excited to visit the two Michelin-star juggernaut? And what to make of Melissa Clark's underwhelming experiences at Thomas Keller's Per Se and The French Laundry? Father Sal's with us today to discuss all of the above, plus a controversy at Long Beach's Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles, a bold proclamation of the best fast food item in America, and quote-unquote intrepid food influencer whose rating every steakhouse chain from the comfort of his own Tesla. In Part 2, we're joined by Reilly Cox and Luke Reyes for the second installment of our Opening Cafe Esca series. If you missed Part 1, this is our series where Luke and Reilly are bringing us along in their journey of opening an ambitious new Italian restaurant in a stunning Arts District development come March of 2025. For today's conversation, I met up with Reilly and Luke at their very much under-construction restaurant space, to hear about how they've been working with their designer on a design concept that presents a modern Italian dining experience able to convey warmth while also standing out amidst the sea of Italian restaurants in Los Angeles. Today's convo will focus on the concept of the design, and our next installment coming up in a few weeks will center around the nitty gritty of bringing that vision to life by way of materials, permitting, budget constraints, and more. This is the 8th bonus episode of The Podgoblin's Hat, with Nina and Dave. You can find it on it's own feed wherever you get your podcasts. Our guest Ali Baker is a researcher in children's literature with a particular interest in children's voice and children's rights, so it's no surprise she chose to come on and talk to us about The Invisible Child! Ali makes a strong case for Bjork as a Spirit of Little My and reminisces about finding the Moomins in her local library as a kid. We situate the Moomins as a type of fantasy, and Ali recommend's Dr Farah Mendlesohn's Rhetorics of Fantasy. We talk about the mixed up class elements of the Moomin family, and go on a long tangent about femme-shaming (#JusticeForTheSnorkMaiden), with reference to Tamora Pierce's Protector of the Small quartet. Ali's article about the the sensitivity edit's to Roald Dahl's work is here. Her Spirit of the Moomin's is Bjork's album Vespertine, and her Spirit of the Podgoblin's Hat is her podcast Fantasy Book Swap.
Michelin held its 2024 California Guide Ceremony earlier this week, and it's fair to say that LA restaurants fared rather well. Jordan Kahn's Vespertine earned back its 2 stars, Holbox, Uka and Meteora earned their first, and LA also dominated the list of new Bib Gourmands. But, like I ask my therapist on a weekly basis, what does it all mean? Father Sal's on the pod today to help us make sense of it all. We also discuss the crucial matter of whether aspiring Vice President of the United States Tim Walz is a foodie, why Pete Wells decided to go all get off my lawn on his final essay as critic of The New York TImes, and a brilliant new series from Eater exploring iconic regional dishes from around the country. Finally, we've got Part 2 of our interview with Botanica's Heather Sperling. Last week's Part 1 received rave reviews, especially from those who appreciate behind-the-scenes looks at restaurant operations. Well, Part 2 is even better. Heather and I discuss in detail the factors making restaurant finances so damn difficult, and what can be done to ease the burden both for businesses and, get this, landlords. I bet you weren't expecting that. We also talk about the exciting food happening at Botanica, of course, and why you as a consumer should feel good supporting a business such as theirs. In this episode we welcome the esteemed David Toop to Hammersmith – on the UK's General Election day – to discuss his extraordinary new book about (and around) Dr. John's 1968 album Gris-Gris. First we revisit the short-lived but splendidly eclectic Collusion magazine our guest co-founded in 1981: we hear about its inception and mission, as manifest in groundbreaking pieces about rap, surf, salsa, exotica and "paranoid sex in '60s soul". We touch on key points along the journey of David's journalistic career before arriving at The Wire in the '90s. A 2012 Pitchfork piece about Wire icon Scott Walker leads us to David's audio interview for that article: two clips from the conversation prompt discussion of Walker's remarkable career from the Walker Brothers to his new album Bish Bosch. Finally we reach the debut album by Malcolm Rebennack, a.k.a. "Dr. John the Night Tripper", and learn of the long gestation of David's book during lockdown. David discusses the complex themes and issues explored in Two-Headed Doctor, including voodoo, racism, minstrelsy, New Orleans, unreliable mythography, and the unsung brilliance of the album's co-creator Harold Battiste. A gravelly clip from the late Charlie Gillett's 1971 audio interview with the Night Tripper himself provides a capsule backstory to the album's germination. Mark talks us out with quotes from newly-added library pieces about Stan Getz (1973), Fred Wesley (1974), Primal Scream (1997) and Robbie Williams (1999). Many thanks to special guest David Toop. Listening for Ghosts in Dr John's Gris-Gris will be published on August 20th by Strange Attractor. Pieces discussed: ¿Te Gusta La Musica Latina?, Alone in the Dark: Björk on Vespertine, Incredibly Strange and Highly Exotic, Scott Walker audio, Mystic vapour: 'Jump Sturdy' (book excerpt), Dr. John: Shadowy Singer Rises From Bayou, Dr. John In Babylon, Dr. John audio, Harold Battiste, Stan Getz, Fred Wesley, Primal Scream and Robbie Williams.
Santiago Lastra is the chef of Michelin-starred restaurant KOL in London. He visited in LA on the heels of the World's 50 Best ceremony in Las Vegas, where KOL was named the number 17 best restaurant in the world. He stopped by the City of Angels for a special collab dinner with Vespertine's Jordan Kahn, and I'm really honored he made time to grab lunch with me at Gilberto Cetina's Holbox, the 2023 LA Times Restaurant of the Year, located at Mercado La Paloma. This is truly a one-of-a-kind episode, dear listener. Chef Lastra tells us his frankly wild story, from growing up in Cuernavaca, Mexico to becoming known globally as a nomadic chef hosting pop-ups all over the world. He tells us about working with Rene Redzepi on Noma's famed pop-up in Tulum, how he developed his style as a chef who blends Mexican techniques and traditions with hyper-local ingredients, and he walks us through what a meal at KOL actually looks like. Personally, I was deeply moved by Santiago's passion and philosophy around food and hospitality. Oh, and did I mention that Chef Gilberto Cetina was serving us lunch while we spoke? Chef Gilberto makes multiple cameos in the episode to chat with Santiago and to explain the incredible dishes he's bringing to the table. It was an outstanding meal as meals at Holbox always are, and it was really cool for me to see these two powerhouse chefs exchange thoughts and ideas. I think you'll enjoy it too. In a new cookbook filled with Lebanese recipes, Hana El-Hibri invokes the spirit of "mayylu," an invitation for visitors to pop in. Jo Flashman pairs Southern California hikes with microbreweries. Kitty Morse opens a tattered leather valise and uncovers a WWII journal from her French forbearers — with photographs and some very special recipes. Chef Jordan Kahn ushers in a new era at Vespertine. Gustavo Arellano weighs in on a proposed California law that would require folic acid to be added to masa. Finally, there's a new face at the farmer's market.
Gabe Kennedy is the all-star chef behind Highland Park's Checker Hall. He joins us today to tell us his high-octane journey, which includes winning Anthony Bourdain's competition show “The Taste,” co-founding one of the hottest plant-based supplement companies on the market, and uprooting his life in New York to relocate to LA and grace our city with one of the most fun dining experiences I've had in a long time in Highland Park's Checker Hall. One conversation with Gabe and you're immediately hooked. You can just really tell how much this guy cares, not just about making delicious food, but about doing things that have real meaning and thought behind them. Personally I'm stoked to have Checker Hall in my backyard, but they've got a chicken schnitzel that is 100% worth driving across town for. Not to mention the historic building, the fantastic cocktails, the music venue next door. It's one of the most fun evenings you can have in our fair city, and I think you'll be makin' a rez right after you hear Gabe talk about it. But first, Father Sal and I break down the things that caught my eye this week. There's the Infatuation's lackluster review of Vespertine, an intriguing albeit quite cringey Taste article on The Best Restaurant in Town, and a discussion on whether shoppy shops are good, bad or somewhere in between for neighborhoods. The LA vs NY debate is over, and we hate to tell ya, but LA has some work to do. Jordan and Max discuss why Los Angeles is currently lacking in the food world, how the city can storm back, and what new restaurants will help bring the ruckus. They also talk meals at Poltergeist and Holbox, Vespertine's return, Daniel Boulud coming to Beverly Hills, what the correct French and Spanish restaurants should look like, Cipriani vs. Dunsmoor aka our demise, and Erewhon's laughing at us. Plus, the intermittent fasting article everyone is sending the fellas, what the hell is going on in real estate, and Max's nude injury.
We're joined by Charbel Hayek, a Top Chef champion and World-All Stars contestant who's recently opened up one of Los Angeles' buzziest new restaurants. Charbel is the mastermind behind Ladyhawk, which opened last year inside of the La Peer Hotel in West Hollywood. Ladyhawk has been earning rave reviews for its forward-thinking Eastern Mediterranean menu, with LA Times critic Bill Addison calling it “Los Angeles' most compelling Lebanese restaurant.” Charbel joins us to talk about the journey that led him to Ladyhawk, from growing up in Beirut as the son of a chef, to becoming the youngest ever Top Chef winner in global franchise history. Of course, I couldn't let him leave without asking him all of the dirty deets on his Top Chef experience, especially with respect to last year's World All-Stars in London. He breaks down just how grueling the filming schedule is, what it was like to win the Gaggan Anand challenge that allowed him to showcase his love for his country, and how he conceptualized the iconic onion dish that he's become synonymous with in Top Chef-loving circles. Also… There's a War on Pizza playing out in New York City, a fascinating inside look at Vespertine 2.0, and the return of Cafe Tropical in Silver Lake. When a series of strange omens occur, Everline disobeys orders to investigate, and uncovers a startling truth in the form of Ravel Severin: a rogue vespertine who reveals the monsters have secrets of their own. Ravel promises the help she needs— for a price. Vespertine magic requires blood, and if Everline wants Ravel to guide across the dangerous moorland, she will have to allow him to feed from her. It's a sin for a warden to feed a vespertine— let alone love one— and as Everline and Ravel travel further across the moorland, she realizes the question isn't whether she will survive the journey, but if she will return unchanged. Or if she wants to.

This title was released in January 2023. It will be exclusively available to buy from the Big Finish website until 28 February 2023, and on general sale after this date. The Doctor and his great-grandson Alex are back travelling the universe together… but when that universe is in the grips of a Time War, the unexpected lurks round every corner... 5.1 Meanwhile, Elsewhere by Tim Foley (1 part) The Doctor and Alex arrive on a tropical beach where something's amiss. Meanwhile, elsewhere… a desperate pilot runs for his life. Meanwhile, elsewhere… it's Cass Fermazzi's first day on an errand-class starship. Meanwhile, elsewhere… it's the beginning of the end of everything. 5.2 Vespertine by Lou Morgan (1 part) It's Cass's first trip in the TARDIS, and the Doctor is determined to make it one to remember. But when they arrive at a research base that shouldn't exist, built above a missing explorer's ship that should never have been found, it seems their visit's going to be memorable for all the wrong reasons. Because deep beneath the ice, there's more than just a long-lost ship waiting for them… 5.3 Previously, Next Time by James Moran (2 parts) Part One: The Doctor, Cass and Alex land to find out what's causing temporal anomalies with the TARDIS, and come across an uninhabited planet, a mysterious factory, and a weapon so dangerous, it could destroy the Universe. But things go catastrophically wrong… Part Two: The factory has vanished along with the TARDIS, and the formerly uninhabited planet is now fully populated by people who have been here for thousands of years, people who have never heard of the Time War OR Daleks. Something very strange is going on with time itself - and it's running out, fast.

What makes a great love song? By chatting about our favourites maybe we can find the common elements. We were inspired by recording our 69th episode in the middle of February which felt like the right convergence of events to talk about songs that express a sentiment of love. Not lust. Not fleeting moments of teenage attraction. Not a rendezvous at the local discotheque. Long lasting, true, heartfelt, dedicated love. But also the pang of love lost - or true love yet to come to fruition. Featured songs: Pagan Poetry by Bjork, from Vespertine, 2001 To Make You Feel My Love by Adele, from 19, 2008 To Make You Feel My Love Trisha Yearwood, from Hope Floats soundtrack, 1998 A Chicken with its Head Cut Off and I Don't Want to get Over You by The Magnetic Fields, from 69 Love Songs, 1999 Everlong by Foo Fighters, from The Colour and the Shape, 1997 Ore D'Amore by Mike Patton, from Mondo Cane, 2010 Gold to Me by Ben Harper, from Fight for Your Mind, 1995 Soldier by Richard Dawson, from Peasant, 2017 Fix You by Cold Play, from X&Y, 2005 Good Woman by Cat Power, from You Are Free, 2003 All I Need by Radiohead, from In Rainbows, 2007 La La Love You by The Pixies, Doolittle, 1989 Is This Love by Bob Marley, from Kaya, 1978 Lover, You Should Have Come Over by Jeff Buckley, from Grace, 1994 I Can't Help Falling in Love and I Need Love by Luka Bloom, from Acoustic Motorbike, 1992 Socials: Fb: https://www.facebook.com/supersonicchat Electronic mailing system: supersonicchat@gmail.com The Twits: https://twitter.com/chat_sonic Insta: https://www.instagram.com/supersonicchat --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/supersonicchat/message

On Halloween weekend 2022, a small group of us gathered in a lounge above The Royale Food & Spirits to hear Stan Chisololm deconstruct his single “Smitten.” Later that night, Stan would play an all vinyl DJ set. To help set the scene, you might picture Stan sitting on a black leather couch wearing the Bjork swon dress from her Academy Awards appearance in 2001 back in her Vespertine days.[“Hi I'm Stan aka 18andCounting…”][Theme]Stan Chisholm, aka “18andCounting” is an experimental DJ and emcee. He's also a graphic artist and muralist with a Bachelor's in Fine Arts from The Art Institute Of Chicago.[I'm a grimey art kid]He's co-founder of open concept arts venue Blank Space on Cherokee St. and a Board Member of the New Music Circle arts collective. He's won numerous academic scholarships and music awards holds DJ residencies at places like The City Museum, The Royale and Spark and occasionally performs and records under the name “The Only Ensemble”, notably at Loufest 2017. Mid pandemic, he landed a track on fellow artist Nathan Cook's afrofuturist compilation entitled AfroFuturism St. Louis. Last summer, his album Some Sort Of Future cemented 18andCounting as lyricist and emcee in the most complete way to date. For this episode, Stan provided 61 individual instrument and vocal tracks (and 26 AUX buses) AND a track laying around from 2015 that would eventually become verse one.Songs Out Loud breaks it down, instrument by instrument, lyric by lyric, and beat by beat.

Liz also reflects on her very fraught relationship with the work of Björk as a former Björk stan, and there's commiseration on her (terrible) MoMA exhibition in 2015. and somewhere in there, music gets talked about. one of a kind, heart demolishing music.

SHHHHH!Leaving the Sugarcubes behind we start looking at the proper solo work of Icelandic legend, Björk. Ewan over-labours a Radiohead analogy, Liam cries under a table, Nick definitely didn't get drunk watching the football, and we are joined by friend of the Facebook Group and man who prepared by watching all of the Björk live DVDs in order...Jeffrey McDonald. Oh, and we are all slightly shocked by how long it took One Little Independent to change their name. There was a huge tech issue in post-production and if you barely notice it then Ewan deserves a medal. In this episode we discuss these records: Debut (1993) Post (1995) Telegram (1996) Homogenic (1997) Vespertine (2001) NOTE: This was originally intended to be released much earlier in the season so we may reference that, Yes we are still amateurs!! DOUBLE NOTE: As mentioned we had a bunch of mess-ups post production but I think I have fixed it, As usual there's a Spotify playlist incorporating the podcast and selected songs which you can find at https://sptfy.com/tfb2 (https://sptfy.com/tfb2) The Guests: Our guide for the records was Liam Moloney (@liamtmaloney), who has the rather excellent Dancing about Architecture pocast which you can find at https://beat.rehab/daacast ( https://beat.rehab/daacast) And he has a bandcamp full of Electronic magic over at https://liamthomasmaloney.bandcamp.com/ (https://liamthomasmaloney.bandcamp.com/) Jeffrey McDonald is a long-time contributor to our Facebook group and it was a pleasure to have him on If you fancy supporting the show, either leave us a review somewhere on Apple or Podchaser which would help enormously.

The past few years have been big for women in the entertainment industry. One sector that remains fairly stagnant, though, is music production. It's still very much a boys' club. In fact, a 2018 USC Annenberg study revealed that only 2 percent of music producers and 3 percent of audio engineers are women. But if you think it's tough now, imagine what it was like 20 or 30 years ago — when Björk was making music. Although she took a very active role in producing her records, she often didn't receive full credit for her work. That's why I want to spend some time with a record that shows Björk's painstaking attention to detail as a producer: Vespertine. My sister Natalie and I will examine it in detail to show why Björk isn't just a talented vocalist or composer, but a pioneer in music production. Enjoying Bjork Unravelled? Authors Josh Berk and Saundra Mitchell tell the terrifying tale of how they collaborated to write CAMP MURDERFACE. We talk about how they met, tips for working on a project with another author, the importance of being dumpster rat-y, finding time to write (even while sleeping), being a phone psychic, launching a book during the quarantine for COVID-19, an actual ghost story, and so much more. Saundra Mitchell has been a phone psychic, a car salesperson, a denture-deliverer and a layout waxer. She’s dodged trains, endured basic training, and hitchhiked from Montana to California. The author of nearly twenty books for tweens and teens, Mitchell’s work includes SHADOWED SUMMER, THE VESPERTINE series, ALL THE THINGS WE DO IN THE DARK, a novel forthcoming from HarperTEEN and the forthcoming CAMP MURDERFACE series with Josh Berk. She is the editor of three anthologies for teens, DEFY THE DARK, ALL OUT and OUT NOW. She always picks truth; dares are too easy. Josh Berk is the author of the teen novels THE DARK DAYS OF HAMBURGER HALPIN (named a best book for teens of 2010 by Kirkus Reviews and Amazon.com) and GUY LANGMAN: CRIME SCENE PROSCRASTINATOR (2012) as well as the middle grade mysteries STRIKE THREE YOU'RE DEAD and SAY IT AIN'T SO.

We begin our third collection of musings on queer musos with a deep dive into Andy’s second favourite of all time, Mother Björk. Defiantly impossible to compare to pretty much any other artist, queers the world over have clasped Bjork to their alternative bosoms since her 1993 first album Debut, but what exactly is it about her body of work, visual language and legacy that appeals so directly to so many queer fans?Drew and Andy take her commercial and critical peak, 1997’s Homogenic, as a starting point for a journey attempting to answer those questions, inevitably coming across many more along the way. Are the rewards worth the listening experience’s challenges? How much yarn can a drag queen unravel from her breasts? Why is there an Iceland supermarket in Iceland? This episode’s companion playlist features all the songs we discuss, and serves as a nifty introduction to Björk herself if that is what you seek. Los temas que reseñamos hoy son: ‘Frosti', 'Hidden Place', 'It's Not Up To You', 'Pagan Poetry', 'Heirloom' y 'Unison'. The Icelandic singer/composer Björk released her concept album Vespertinein 2001. Raymond Bisha introduces a new audio recording of an opera that was born of that release. The inherent theatricality of Björk’s original was the inspiration for an expert creative team to effect the transition from studio to stage, from sound tracks to symphonic support. Scored for four soloists and two choirs, and with all the original electronic sounds re-imagined on an array of acoustic instruments, Vespertine the opera is a stunning new creation, not merely an adaptation.

Today's word of the day is vespertine. It's spelled V-E-S-P-E-R-T-I-N-E. Vespertine is an adjective that means happening in the evening. Vespertinus (ves pair TEEN oos) the Latin word for evening is where our word of the day began its life. vespertine is a synonym of words like nightly and overnight, but it's best to dust this word off for formal occasions, such as, the good lady's presence was requested for vespertine activities that summer. She accepted the invitations, but never for anything past eight. Once again, the spelling of verspertine is V-E-S-P-E-R-T-I-N-E.
Zach Brooks talks about what it meant to read Jonathan Gold’s review of Vespertine, one of LA’s more controversial restaurant openings in recent memory.

Everything that needs to be said about Bjork has already been said. Her discography, like her talent, is vast, and unable to pass up the chance to talk about anything weird, we thought we’d say our piece. Weaver is a huge fan, and when quizzed about what album we should talk about he immediately picked ‘Vespertine’. Neither Chris or Mark were too familiar with her work, so the conversation in this episode is particularly interesting as Weaver once again drives the car. He gives us a pretty thorough appraisal of her discography whilst Chris drops a few patented knowledge bombs about her history, whilst also praising and asking questions about the way she chooses who to work with on each of her albums. Mark also expands on how he feels the album is like a big warm hug. We understand that Bjork has legions of fiercely devoted fans, so we’re really looking forward to seeing how people vote on this episode. Is ‘Vespertine’ her definitive statement? Is this her best record? If not, what other albums should we consider? You can let us know by voting on or Facebook page and if you disagree, drop us a comment and tell us why!

On the latest episode of My Favorite Album, bullshit-destroying Californian singer-songwriter and Telecaster-slinger Margaret Glaspy battles migraines to talk about the balance of (*cough*) emotion and math involved in the intricate and emotional Bjork classic ‘Vespertine'. Also, we talk about how she took apart Bjork's song ‘Who Is It' and made it her own, the different responsibilities of being a support act and a headliner, making deliberate craft seem spontaneous, being compared to Liz Phair and whether she's got enough credit for her role as producer on her debut album ‘Emotions and Math'. My Favorite Album is a podcast unpacking the great works of pop music. Each episode features a different songwriter or musician discussing their favorite album of all time - their history with it, the making of the album, individual songs and the album's influence on their own music. Jeremy Dylan is a filmmaker, journalist and photographer from Sydney, Australia who has worked in the music industry since 2007. He directed the the feature music documentary Jim Lauderdale: The King of Broken Hearts (out now!) and the feature film Benjamin Sniddlegrass and the Cauldron of Penguins, in addition to many commercials and music videos. The American experimental electronic duo Matmos are M.C. Schmidt and Drew Daniel. Both artists are the main core of the outfit but they are frequently joined by other musicians and an array of domestic gadgets. Currently based in Baltimore - Daniel is an associate professor in the Department of English at Johns Hopkins University-, they formed in San Francisco in the 90s, where Schmidt worked as a teacher in the New Genres Department at the San Francisco Art Institute and Daniel was taking his doctoral studies on the literary cult of melancholy at Berkley (University of California) Over the last 2 decades Matmos have gained a reputation as the new masters of musique concrete through their conceptual approach and the use of unusual sound sources. Their productions are challenging but also infused with a playful touch of domestic humor and a disregard for genre conventions. They first entered the more mainstream musical consciousness in 2001 through their collaboration for Bjork’s album Vespertine and they toured the world with the singer for next 2 years. Today they manage to balance their academic careers with touring some of the most entertaining and unpredictable live shows in electronic music. Matmos were at Unsound this year presenting Robert Ashley’s “Perfect Lives”. Today, more than ever, it feels like a premonitory chant for the disassembly of a crying America. The performance was an exciting, challenging and thought-provoking experimental “soap opera”. It could take you some time to get into their weird, spellbinding universe but once you managed it unruled into a touching experience. We met with Drew and MC the morning after Unsound’s infamous karaoke night for what was a really entertaining chat. It was really great to have an insight into the procedures that tight together all their disparate artistic endeavours. Hoping you enjoy it as much as we did. This podcast was produced by CLOT Magazine editorial team and Stephen Mclaughlin for Unsound Festival in Collaboration with OFF Radio Krakow. This mix is for Black women who love Björk Guðmundsdóttir. For some of us Björk is one of the guiding forces in the most secret parts of our emotional lives. And there is something to be said about the fact that my deepest, most intimate romantic relationships have been with Black women who speak Björk. She is one of the most brilliant artists of our time, with relevance far beyond the boringly sensational Academy Award swan dress debacle, which on the low, I believe was a challenge to American popular cultural values. Like on some fashion resistance shit. “I thought I could organize freedom, how Scandinavian of me?” During my New York years, I had the opportunity to witness Björk live at the Apollo with three other Black women. Björk at The Apollo? What a combination and what an honorable way to honor the Black folks that get down with her like that. Aside from the sheer weight of the decision to perform in Harlem, we, like thousands of her students, made sure to have loot in hand ready to buy tickets the moment they went on sale. We managed to get tickets, but please understand, in less than five minutes the show was sold out. And to be honest, it wasn’t Harlem or Brooklyn who showed up to see her, which I understand; Björk is ‘strange fiction.’ It was the usual crew at the Apollo concert; former club kids, angsty white women and entitled hipsters. And of course some of us were in the house. My crew and I represented for all the Black women inspired by her audaciousness, by her work ethic, and by her willingness to make whatever screw face necessary to offer ‘love scholarship’ through song. We cheered from the balcony squinting to experience what looked like an Icelandic ball of glitter performing unapologetically to self-composed electro folk music. I will never forget her relationship with the microphone, dancing around it, stepping away from it, looking into it and making it sing her songs. She’s a beast of a live performer. After the concert I kept thinking about how to build on the energy felt from the experience. So I reached out to Greg Tate, one of the only Black men in my life who loves Bjork as much as I do, to discuss the possibility of the Black Rock Coalition’s involvement in a tribute to Björk, at the Apollo Theater no less. The vision was to have my favorite artists, including Tamar Kali, Joi and Taylor McFerrin, to not so much perform, but interpret her music. I believe that only an original interpretation is possible. A night of Björk covers would never do. Later I decided to hold off on the tribute in fear of not having the resources to do the event justice. One cannot half step when the name Björk is attached to a project and slowly but surely my budget fronted on my vision. While a major tribute event was not possible, I kept thinking of ways to express the impact this creature of an artist has had on my artistic and personal development. I’ve turned to Björk’s music so many times for heart education and the inevitable ‘feeling of feelings’ that happen when you find yourself brave enough to face the dark beauty of a song like ‘Unravel’ from the Homogenic album. For years I’ve waited for whatever it is I am supposed to do with this special place that I hold for her work in my heart. It turned out to be this mix, which was partially inspired by the release of her latest and ninth studio album, Vulnicura. My Black girl Bjork tribe was surprised, maybe even betrayed to learn that I don’t love it. It’s brilliant by default, but part of why I love her so much is because she speaks to lovers wherever they are on their journey, excavating lessons buried deep in the nuanced exchanges between intimate partners in any given space and time. A breakup album felt too obvious for me. Before listening to Vulnicura I had to ask myself if I even had the emotional capacity to hold Björk’s heartbreak this winter? Björk’s triple Scorpio heartbreak? Triple Scorpio? What the hell does it mean to be in partnership with a Björk? She’s always been so perfectly naked or ‘Violently Happy?’ But I listened, hoping that I hadn’t become one of those fans who run away when artists are inspired to drive their work in a different direction? I mean I get it. Sometimes you need something epic, a release, to get the hurt out. Marvin did it brilliantly with “Here My Dear,” Nas even did it with his Post Kelis “Life Is Good” album, and I’m sure there are hundreds of other artists who produced entire projects around mourning, or celebrating the ending of a relationship. And there are jewels all up in and through Vulnicura, don’t get it twisted, I know who she is. But did I miss her impersonal cryptic lyrical finesse?” Yes. And do I understand how honest, brave, vulnerable and musically sound it is? Absolutely. So far there is only one song that I can return to, “Atom Dance” and it too is represented on this mix. I’ll be revisiting ‘Vulnicura’ at a later time, certainly a different season. Maybe my European winter was not the right time? But I trust her and my resistance could have everything to do with where I was when it was released, so leave space for me to retract my underwhelm please? I do, however, credit Vulnicura for sending me back to her catalog with the intention to create a Björk syllabus of sorts. I listened to all of her albums and carefully selected songs that have gotten me through and past IT, that have taken me over and under IT. And because she is such an incredible writer, thinker, feeler, this mix will function like a literature review of her discography, yes, music as text. Get into it. Sending special love to Porter Ferbee, a bonafied scholar who can school you on the time and place of almost every song created under the hand of Björk and to Zetoille, for introducing my 1998 self to Bjork on one late night in San Francisco. And to Dream Hampton who while listening to ‘Vespertine’ is quick to point out the genius of her lyricism, calling attention to the lines that turn your ass in circles. I hope this special compilation honors us all.
