Send us Fan MailMy guest today is Aimie K. Runyan, author of Mademoiselle Eiffel, listed in the Visual Arts category on Art In Fiction.View the video on YouTube: https://youtu.be/_JcFmRQ4PcQWhy Aimie chose to write about Claire Eiffel rather than her more famous father, and the surprising role Claire played in running Gustave's household, social life, and business from the age of 14.The wax figure of Claire at the top of the Eiffel Tower, alongside Gustave and Thomas Edison, and the historical meeting it commemorates. How clothing functions as armor and identity in the novel, particularly Claire's corset as a symbol of constraint reframed as protection in a world not built for ambitious women. The invisible female labor at the heart of the story, and what Claire sacrificed, including her art and her choice of husband, to secure her place at her father's side. The opposition to the Eiffel Tower from artists, architects, and Gustave's own friend Garnier, and what the contrast between the Opéra Garnier and the tower reveals about two competing visions of modernity.Aimie's research trips to Paris and the Musée d'Orsay archives, where the Eiffel family correspondence, party menus, and letters from admirers have been preserved since 1981.What Aimie gained by returning to the archives after the story was already written. The Panama Canal scandal, Gustave's complicated legacy, and why writing through Claire's adoring lens required Aimie to be deliberately even-handed with a man who was "no more of a villain than your average rich man used to getting his own way."The oldest daughter narrative and why Claire's story resonates today, including a frank conversation about the undervaluing of women's labor and the difference between "emotional labor" and plain old mental load.Aimie's advice to writers on research: travel if you can, use Google Earth if you can't, never hesitate to contact museum curators, and know that one good research trip can fuel three books.Reading from the scene in Portugal where 14-year-old Claire organizes a workers' dinner and earns her first public acknowledgment from her father.Read more about Aimie K. We have experienced Paris through the words of Hemingway and Balzac, the colors of Chagall and Delaunay, the wild adventures of Henry Miller, the recipes of Julia Child, the stars of Michelin, and the curated lists of Fodor's, Frommer's, and Lonely Planet. Yet, few have explored Paris through the unique perspective of the “Exposition Universelle”—the World's Fair, or World Expo.Paris is a living archive of seven Universal Expositions held between 1855 and 1937. These grand events left an indelible mark on the city, creating an urban diary of monumental achievements: the Eiffel Tower, of course, but also the Musée d'Orsay, the Grand Palais, and the Petit Palais.“Nobody Sits Like the French” uncovers these stories and many more. Blending travel guide and history, the book reveals a Paris invisible to most—a city where every glass of Burgundy, every sip from Baccarat crystal, every Monet or Gauguin admired, and even the modern marvel of a working sewer system, can be traced back to the legacy of a World Expo. https://www.charlespappas.world/buy-the-world-expo-bookhttp://www.yourlotandparcel.org

For the 32nd episode of "Reading the Art World," host Megan Fox Kelly speaks with Mary Morton, Curator and Head of the Department of French Paintings, and Kimberly Jones, Curator of 19th Century French Paintings at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Together, they discuss their work on the landmark exhibition, “Paris 1874: The Impressionist Moment,” and the accompanying exhibition catalogue. The conversation centers on the daring spirit of the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874, a moment that saw artists defy the prestigious Paris Salon to showcase new ways of capturing modern life. Jones and Morton share insights into the forces behind Impressionism's revolutionary appeal, from the political and social upheavals in France to the transformation of Paris under Haussmannization. They explain how these changes inspired artists to redefine not only the subjects they painted but also how art itself was exhibited and experienced. This exhibition and catalog shine a light on lesser-known figures who were critical to the movement's evolution, challenging visitors to unlearn what they think they know about Impressionism. With its juxtapositions of Salon and Impressionist works, “Paris 1874: The Impressionist Moment” allows audiences to feel the radical nature of these pieces that once shocked critics but are now beloved worldwide.“Paris 1874: The Impressionist Moment” is on view at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. through January 19, 2025. We meet artist Nathanaëlle Herbelin to discuss her major solo show in Paris. A constant visitor to the Musée d'Orsay's collections since childhood, the Franco-Israeli artist Nathanaëlle Herb Elin has been invited to put her canvases and sources of inspiration into perspective. An heiress to the Nabis, the artist brings their favorite subjects – daily life, domestic interiors and intimacy – up to date in resolutely contemporary compositions. The presentation of her work at the Musée d'Orsay is very much in line with one of the focuses of the museum's cultural project, which consists of extending “Orsay's polyphony” to less classical artistic figures, in this case by presenting an emerging artist who has already won considerable critical praise. Her meteoric career since she graduated from the Paris School of Fine Arts less than ten years ago has drawn a great deal of attention and will also provide an opportunity to highlight the Musée d'Orsay's interest in artists attending the school that is its neighbor, especially the alumni fascinated by its collections. The Spring 2024 temporary exhibition will show how the artist delicately follows the path of the Nabis. Although the artist's subtle brushstrokes, chromatic palette, and preferred motifs may bring to mind Pierre Bonnard, Édouard Vuillard, or Félix Vallotton, other figurative details bring us back to a more contemporary reality: the elements of modern life (cellphones and electronic power cables) that can be seen in her updated genre scenes, and the way she brings present-day issues into these compositions. Hence, the intimacy of the maternal body at her toilette may present the model in the act of depilating, or the whole genre is called into question by the transposition of a male sitter naked in the bathtub; another canvas even presents an intimate scene centered on female pleasure, or a couple depicted in the bedroom are illuminated by the midnight blue light of a portable computer set on the knees of a figure sitting up in bed.Born in Israel in 1989 to a French father and an Israeli mother, Nathanaëlle Herbelin has always been drawn to make work that reflects her position within and between the two cultures. Her works contain subtle hints—both in subject matter and form—as windows into a world imbued with a quiet melancholy. Herbelin encourages the viewer to slow down, as a way of embracing the intimacy involved in viewing art. She has developed a formal style unique within the contemporary tendency towards figurative painting. Certain patterns and colours appear more defined than others in the softened memories that she so delicately captures. Earth tones give the works a quality evocative of a reverie and her loose brushwork recalls post-impressionist techniques. Herbelin has cited Les Nabis—a group of young painters active in Paris during the late 19th century—as a central influence in her practice. Most notably, she takes inspiration from the stylistic poetry that art historical figures such as Pierre Bonnard applied to domestic scenes. This modern twist should indisputably be able to resonate with the paintings of Pierre Bonnard, Edouard Vuillard and Felix Vallotton, hung permanently in these galleries, with no conflict or impression of imitation since the world of Nathanaëlle Herbelin remains so sensitive and unique.Follow @NathanaelleHerbelin and @MuseeOrsayThanks to @XavierHufkens and @GalerieJousseEnterprise Hosted on Acast.
