My dear colleague Ylvie Fros from the Netherlands brought up a very important topic at the Summer Academy this year. Inspired by her work with horses and numerous rehabilitation cases, she had been asking herself: Can training always help, or can training sometimes be too much? When have we trained "enough," and when should we admit that our training is doing more harm than good to the horse? A very important topic. Without any doubt, we always want the best for our horse, but sometimes the best decision is to determine the course of action for our horse. The interview is in English, but don't worry – it is easy to understand. Pain and training – we all know the phenomenon of not always being fit and agile when getting out of bed. Or how it feels to get back into motion after an injury. However, our horses can't always tell us how they truly feel, and besides imaging diagnostics, a trained eye is required. For this project, Ylvie has now taken the initiative.

Ep.118 features Alteronce Gumby. He is an artist and local of New York City. His artistic practice includes painting, ceramics, installation and performance. His work has been exhibited at galleries such as Hauser & Wirth, Gladston Gallery and Camden Arts Centre. His work will be shown in an upcoming solo exhibition with Nicola Vassell gallery titled, The Color of Everything, in September 2022. In his recent exhibition Cross Colours at Bode Projects in Berlin, the power of complementary colors is presented in works that reference color exercises in Joseph Albert's Interaction of Colour. Through Gumby's fluorescent and chromatic spectrum of iridescent color, the artist engages the viewer and expands the notions through which we perceive form and color, the subjectivity of identity and the materiality of earth and cosmic space.  Gumby graduated from the Yale School of Art with an MFA in Painting and Printmaking in 2016. He has won notable awards, such as the Austrian American Foundation /Seebacher Prize for Fine Arts and the Robert Reed Memorial Scholarship. Gumby has also participated in numerous international artist residencies, such as the Rauschenberg Residency (2019), London Summer Intensive (2016), Summer Academy in Salzburg, Austria (2015), 6Base (2016) and was the 2016 recipient of the Harriet Hale Woolley Scholarship at the Fondation des Étas-Unis in Paris. His work has been featured in publications such as ARTnews, Artnet, Artsy, BOMB, Brooklyn Rail, Cultured, DAZED, Freize, Surface & Vogue. Gumby has also curated exhibitions, such as his most recent and ongoing exhibition, Summer of Possibilities with Bode Projects in Berlin, To Dream Avante-Garde at Hammond Harkins Galleries and A Muffled Sound Under Water at Latchkey Gallery. Gumby published his first monograph, Color Is A Beautiful Thing, with Charles Moffett & False Flag in2021, outlining six years of his painting practice from 2014- 2020. Being an educator is always hard work. As we enter the third school year impacted by Covid, being an educator is harder than ever. Before the start of the 2021-22 school year, we sat down with a veteran high school history teacher to discuss the upcoming school year. Filled with equal parts optimism and concern for the year ahead, Elizabeth Rasmussen shares the importance of taking charge, engaging in advocacy and being the change she wants to see. Transcript [00:00:00] Announcer: Sharon: You're listening to “Educating from the Heart.” Thank you for joining our lively conversations with teachers, support professionals, parents, and students, as they share issues that matter most in our public schools. Here are your hosts, Tina Dunbar and Luke Flynt. [00:00:27] Tina Dunbar, Host: Welcome back to “Educating from the Heart,” the Florida Education Association podcast for teachers, support professionals, parents, community leaders and students. Together, we engage in monthly conversations, exploring all aspects of education and the impacts of policy decisions on our students and their schools. I'm Tina Dunbar, and with me is my co-host, Luke Flynt. Hey, Luke! [00:00:53] Luke Flynt, Host: Hey, Tina. [00:00:54] Tina: Good to see you again. [00:00:55] Luke: You too. [00:00:56] Tina: Well, after our brief summer break, we're back to kickoff season two of “Educating from the Heart.” I am so excited, and I know you are too, because we've got a lot planned for this season. [00:01:07] Luke: Absolutely, Tina. This season, we're going to talk about everything from teaching accurate history and civics in today's K-12 classrooms, to the attack on academic freedom at Florida's colleges and universities. And, of course, during the legislative session, we will keep everybody updated on what's happening in the State Capitol. But let's back up a bit and talk about this month's episode. [00:01:31] Tina: Well, Luke, as you know, back in July FEA held its annual professional development gathering called Summer Academy. It's our largest training for teachers and support professionals from across the state. And it was held in-person and, you know, everybody was looking forward to that. So, we decided to take the podcast on the road. Well, educators generally take advantage of this event and network with their colleagues, and one of the top conversations dealt with the new school year and the unknowns surrounding the virus. Luke, all school employees, regardless of where they work, had been looking forward to a fresh start this year and a return as close as possible to normal for this school year. [00:02:16] Luke: We open season two with a high school history teacher from Polk County who has been in the classroom for 14 years and seen a lot of change during that time. Elizabeth Rasmussen shared her hopes for her students, as well as her fears for what this school year could bring. “Raz” as she is affectionately known, spoke about the importance of unionism and legislative advocacy, but she begins by sharing what inspired her to become a teacher and how her students motivate her to remain in the profession, despite its many challenges. [00:02:50] Elizabeth R.: When I look back at the reason why I do what I do: It's my kids. It's kids like, and these are pseudonyms, because like Veronica and Juan that I've written about that really inspired me to keep educating, and I'm actually getting a PhD right now. So,

Curt and Katie talk with Tereza about the research behind political reactionism, looking at the characteristics of someone who is primed to be politically reactive. We also talk about how therapists can help clients address this harmful dynamic.   It’s time to reimagine therapy and what it means to be a therapist. To support you as a whole person and a therapist, your hosts, Curt Widhalm and Katie Vernoy talk about how to approach the role of therapist in the modern age. Interview with Dr. Tereza Capelos, Director of the Institute for Conflict Cooperation and Security at the University of Birmingham, and Senior Lecturer in Political Psychology Dr Tereza Capelos is Senior Lecturer in Political Psychology, Director at the Institute for Conflict, Cooperation and Security (ICCS) at the University of Birmingham (UoB), President Elect of the International Society of Political Psychology, and co-chair of the Political Psychology Standing Group of the European Consortium of Political Research. Tereza’s research examines the psychological determinants of political preferences with particular focus on political reactionism, resentful affect and political radicalization during crises and tensions. She is currently co-editing a special issue titled “Reactionary Politics and Resentful Affect in Populist Times”. She has a PhD from Stony Brook University (USA) and worked at the University of Leiden and the University of Surrey. She serves on the editorial board of five international journals, and co-edits the Palgrave Series in Political Psychology. Tereza founded and directed the Summer Academy training program of the International Society of Political Psychology (ISPP, 2011-2016) and currently directs two graduate programs (MSc Political Psychology of IR, and MSc Global Cooperation and Security) at UoB. In this episode we talk about: Intersection between psychology and politics Research on voters who are politically reactive Political Reactionism – how it is created and what it looks like The role of shame, fear, resentment, and anger in voting Anti-preference – to want to move backward, rather than forward Uncertainty, feelings of resentment, perception of injustice Populism as a mechanism to devalue what you cannot have, find who is at fault, how to turn things back to a better time The lure of the idealized or fictional past Reactionism is not related to a specific ideology – can happen on the left or right Feelings and beliefs are more likely to drive decisions than ideology The way that a reactionary orientation can lead to problematic behaviors The problem with being anti-progress, especially related to solving the problems we are facing The difficulty reactionaries with engaging with science Seeking to prove, with confirmation bias – rather than to testing hypotheses The anti-expert sentiment that is based in this problem with science and with uncertainty The insight required to identify when we become reactionary How people label the emotions related to reactionism (and the problem with not knowing how to identify and label our emotions) What therapists can do to help vent emotions related to the resentment that leads to a reactionary orientation Helping people to see neutral and positive uncertainty – rather than only negative uncertainty Bringing people into the scientific method, disappointing them that they will not be “proving” or “confirming,” but rather “testing” Our Generous Sponsor: SimplePractice Running a private practice is rewarding, but it can also be demanding. Sammy Baloji and Mpho Matsipa discuss Baloji’s work as it relates to colonialism, extraction and environmental catastrophes. They discuss the interconnectedness of planetary deterioration while working through and beyond the colonial archive, and an exploration of African material futures. Baloji’s photographic work, Essay on Urban Planning (2013) for instance, assembles past and present temporalities of Lubumbashi to show how the urban centre and the peripheral suburbs are separated by a strip of land that invokes a wider spectrum of species to reveal the mechanisms of colonial spatial logics embedded in city planning. Baloji’s earlier work leads to a larger body of work with similar sets of concerns, such as Extractive Landscapes (2019), his solo exhibition at Summer Academy at Stadtgalerie Museums pavillon in Salzburg, which addresses the ways in which complex histories are reflected in the landscape, and how it is inscribed in artefacts and landscapes by showing traces left by mining in the mineral-rich Congolese province of Katanga. Foregrounding prototypes as preliminary versions from which other forms may be developed, this podcast volume on Prototypes creates room to iterate, imagine and improve upon new modes of connecting objects and subjects, materials and societies. The discussion reflects on Baloji's understanding of the entanglements of extraction in the Democratic Republic of Congo with Cold War geo-politics and contemporary global capitalism. Demonstrating this inherent interconnectedness, Other Tales (2020) illustrates his assertion of the importance of decolonial narratives about the Congo, and histories of extraction, Baloji repurposes archival materials and portraiture to surface linkages between the Democratic Republic of Congo’s colonial history and its neo-colonial present. Baloji’s creative practice includes orality and mnemonic elements to map memory; and his research practice includes questions about the spiritual and cultural associations that the people in the Katanga region have with their environment. He draws on Achille Mbembe’s formulation of the shared agency between humans and objects —engages the body not only as a site of possible liberation but also as a site of critique by discussing how objects are animated for human production. Using the example of how the digital realm is made possible by violence in the Congo, Baloji foregrounds the fact that the parts required to fabricate mobile phones and computers are inseparable from the exploitation of people and land in central Africa. While exploring ways to access material histories that speak to a larger conversation on the continuous colonial gestures of extraction in terms of residues, waste and toxicity, Baloji speculates on what African material futures might be, that might be rooted in histories of technology that precede the colonial encounter.

Welcome to Secrets of Organ Playing Podcast #131! Today's guest Belgian organist Daniel Vanden Broecke. Het Orgel in Vlaanderen ("The Organ in Flanders") is a non-profit association founded in 1990 in order to maintain and to improve the organ culture and the organ heritage in Flanders. This organ heritage should be re-valuated and brought to the attention of people who are not so involved like organists and musicians. The heritage contains a.o. organs who need to be restored or are already restored. A broader view contains the whole organ culture in Flanders, the instruments, the organists, as well professionals as amateurs, the organ students, and also the historical musical manuscripts and documents. Between 1990 and 2000 the most important issue was the realisation of "the Day of the Organ", organ concerts with free entrance (at first in Bruges, later on in different cities of Flanders), the making and distributing of photographs of Flemish historical organs, and the publication of a magazine for the members. In 2000 the Board of directors was joined by some deputies of the cultural world in Flanders, mostly people who were involved in the care of the monuments. The office moved from Bruges to Antwerp. The "Day of the Organ" became part of the yearly "Day of the Monuments", and was renamed "Organ on Open Monument Day". The website www.orgelinvlaanderen.be was started and contains also the monthly organ mail newspaper. The magazine for members changed from bimonthly to three-monthly and was named "Information magazine of Flemish Organ culture". The association grew and other activities were organised, such as the "Flemish Organ Days", when every two years a city was chosen where "The Organ in Flanders" organizes a weekend with a competition for non-professional organists, and with different concerts and workshops. There is also a Summer Academy. Since 2004 the association has an own cd-label "Vision-Air", with recordings that are called "Flemish Organ Treasures", in co-operation with radio Klara, the classical Flemish radio. Another part of the work of the association is advising and helping local projects that bring the organ heritage to a larger public, and co-operates in the exploitation of the organs in the Congres Center Elzenveld, by contacting organists and drawing up programs. In the context of the re-use of churches, finally, the Organ in Flanders support to church councils and others replacements of instruments and exploitation of organs. In 2015 a project to raise awareness children and young people for the organ was started: Orgelkids. A next step was the development of a digital app for children and young people. Pedagogical seminars for organ teachers are annually realized the in cooperation with OVSG. “The Organ in Flanders” is a partner of Herita and also works closely with the CRKC (Leuven) and Open Churches. In all of this the Flemish Government, department Heritage, is partner of "Het Orgel in Vlaanderen". In this conversation Daniel shares his insights about his work with Het Orgel in Vlaanderen and how these initiatives are reaching children of all ages. And don't forget to help spread the word about the SOP Podcast by sharing it with your organist friends. Welcome to Secrets of Organ Playing Podcast #60! https://www.organduo.lt Today's guest is Sławomir Zubrzycki – outstanding Polish pianist, soloist and chamber musician specializing in performing contemporary music, composer, and constructor of musical instruments. He's a graduate of the Academy of Music in Cracow (1988, piano – prof. T. Żmudziński's class, modern music – prof. A. Kaczyński's class) and The Boston Conservatory of Music (1990-91). Fulbright Scholar. Prize winner at the prestigious Polish Piano Art Festival in Słupsk (1987). Sławomir Zubrzycki has been giving concerts in USA, Germany, Austria, Spain, Great Britain and Ukraine. He has made several recordings for Polskie Nagrania (Polish recording company), Polish Radio and Television. He was a lecturer at Summer Academy of Contemporary Music – Avantgarde Tirol in Austria (2005, 2007). In 2009, Zubrzycki came across the traces of a real rarity – Viola Organista – the instrument designed by Leonardo da Vinci, but which had almost been unknown and forgotten. Fascinated by the facts from the past, in the years 2009-2012 Zubrzycki created his own version of Leonardo da Vinci's design. The premiere recitals of viola organista (October 2013) were a spectacular artistic success that attracted record attendances, gained attention of the international media and over two million viewers on YouTube. His European tours in 2014-2015 included recitals at Stockholm Early Music Festival, Wratislavia Cantans, Ghent Festival of Flanders, Kotor Art Festival, Polish Music Days in Turkey, Ohrid Summer Festival, Milano Classica. In 2015 the first solo album, "Viola organista - The da Vinci sound", was released thanks to support of music lovers from all over the world (from Kickstarter campaign). In 2015, Zubrzycki was also invited by Icelandic singer Björk to record together an acoustic version of her album "Vulnicura". In this conversation, Sławomir shares his insights about how he constructed viola organista and how he learned to play it. It's completely different and unexplored area of music and I hope a lot of organists from all over the world will find much inspiration from it. Enjoy and share your comments below. And don't forget to help spread the word about the SOP Podcast by sharing it with your organist friends.
