In December, Roxbury residents learned the Walgreens location on Warren Street would close its doors in January. It's the fourth Boston Walgreens to close in just over a year, all of which have been in predominately Black and Latino neighborhoods. For customers in those communities, the closures mean more than just losing a pharmacy -- it may also mean decreased access to groceries, hygiene products and certain essential healthcare services. Today on The Common, Boston Globe Money, Power and Inequality Reporter Tiana Woodard explains how the closure of retail pharmacies further exacerbates healthcare disparities in the city and what options remain for impacted communities. *CONTAINS SENSITIVE INFORMATION & SOME GRAPHIC DETAILS* On this episode I am joined by an amazing woman, Tie' Asia. Tie' Asia is the sister of Rashad Lesley-Barnes, who was fatally stabbed in August 2012 on Warren Street in Roxbury, MA after he stepped off of a bus . As most of you all may know, I too lost a sibling, my sister Charline Rosemond who was fatally shot in April 2009 on Webster Ave in Somerville, MA. On this episode we discuss in details the story of the unfortunate demise of a young black man who lost his life in a senseless manner. We also discuss how losing a sibling has effected the both of us and our families. Rashad's murderer was convicted of 2nd degree murder and is currently serving his sentence but did that bring any peace to Tie'Asia and her family? In my sister Charline's case, unfortunately her murderer/s have not been arrested nor charged. Tune in to hear our stories! We give you the REAL truth from the sisters of both an amazing young woman and man whose lives were cut short. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theroseyperspective/support

1st Sunday of Advent 11/29/2020 New Creation & Reading Someone Else's Mail 2 Corinthians 5:17 A New Creation "Behold, the new has come..." J.R.R. Tolkien—the way that most modern scholars read the scripture is like taking a single stone out of a tower instead of examining the tower in its wholeness, and complete form. We will dominantly be reading from the Gospel of Mark in the coming year. When we read the NT, it's like reading someone else's mail. Part of the mystery of Jesus is that he's enthroned in the 4 Gospels. Mark's symbol is the lion because he is riding The person's mail you are reading is in the mid 60s, AD. In 64 AD, Nero set the city of Rome on fire. The image that derived from that is Nero playing the fiddle as it burned. Afterwards, he chose the Catholics a scapegoat. Thus began one of the largest Christian persecutions of Christ. Peter and Paul were martyred during this time. The Gospel of Mark is written for a church who is suffering. Once you know that God loves you from the Book of Matthew, Jesus in the Book of Mark says, "Come suffer with me." 1 Peter 4 "Beloved, do not be surprised..." "Rejoice in so far as you join in Christ's sufferings that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed." The horrific death on the cross was no accident. Mark wants to call you out of the shallow waters of the Christian faith. We are in desperate need of Christians who understand what this means. Mark 8: the heart of Mark's gospel. The closest followers of Jesus are dead and blind. The only thing that opens the apostles' eyes is the Crucifixion. "I don't care how many books you have read or how long you have been a Catholic. Everyone of us needs God to strip away the hardness so that we can truly understand the mystery of the Crucifixion." Read Mark, and make a decision today to leave the shallow waters, and enter joyfully into the suffering of Christ. "Jesus, may I be conformed to the Cross." Join Father Brian Larkin on Sunday at 10 AM, Mountain Standard Time, for a livestreamed Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes in Denver, Colorado! Following our Mass livestream, we will continue to offer a Communion procession, via car line, in the Lourdes parking lot. The procession will take place from noon until 1 PM, weather permitting. Please respect our neighbors and do not line up early. Please enter from Warren Street and exit at Iliff Ave. Also, please note these additional guidelines: *Firstly, watch a livestreamed Mass before you come to receive Communion; Mass and Communion are meant to be celebrated in combination with each other. Thank you! Please wear a mask, bring hand sanitizer. Please remove the mask only after the priest or EMHC backs up from your car, unless you are receiving by mouth. There will be no distribution of the Precious Blood at this time. An EMHC or priest will rotate around your car to distribute the Holy Eucharist to all recipients. Please do not leave your car at any time, or wander the Lourdes campus for any reason—not even for a bathroom break, as these are city orders. Thank you! **Please stay home if you are sick, or have any risk factors for COVID-19** (i.e., you are 65 or older, or have a compromised or suppressed immune system from transplants or cancer treatments, or if you have diabetes, heart disease, or any other risky health conditions listed by the CDC or NIH). It may come with some permanent houseguests. “It's actually a gorgeous home. It's in really good shape for as old as it is,” says Heather Bland, the agent selling the home on Warren Street in Mitchell, IN. Known as Whispers Estate, the home has a history of paranormal activity. The $130,000 list price includes the furniture and ghosts. The 3,700-square-foot, four-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom home features original wood floors throughout much of the home. According to the website created by the homeowner, the structure was once part home, part business—as was the case with many homes in the 1800s. A doctor had his practice downstairs and, over the years, some patients died, including children. Several TV shows, publications, and paranormal groups have investigated the home. There have been numerous reports of a child seen running through the house, the smell of baby powder in one of the rooms, children singing or crying, doorknobs jiggling, and doors popping open. People who sleep in the room where the doctor died say they sometimes wake up to sounds of coughing and labored breathing. About the House Link: http://whispersestate.com/about/ Whispers Estate was built in 1894 (earliest discovered records). In 1899 (or 1901, depending on which source you reference), Dr John and Jessie Gibbons purchased the house from the original owners, Dr George and Sarah White. Dr John and Jessie Gibbons reportedly adopted abandoned/orphaned children. One of these children, a 10-year old girl named Rachael, started a fire in the front parlor, being badly burned, and died 2 days later in one of the upstairs bedrooms. But, you can still hear, and sometimes see, her running around the house today. A 10-month infant, Elizabeth, died in the master bedroom of unknown causes, but there's still the scent of baby powder, and you can sometimes still hear her cries. Jessie died in that same bedroom after a bout with double-pneumonia. Guests sleeping in that room often awake to labored breathing and coughing. Some even report feeling as if someone is sitting on their chest. The most common paranormal activity in this room is the closet doorknob will frequently jiggle for a few moments, stop suddenly, and the closet door will pop open. The maximum reported count for repeatable occurrences is 5 within a couple minutes. this of course required persons in the room to close the door each time. Dr Gibbons was a prominent doctor in town, having his office in the 1st floor rooms in the house. Given the time period and medical field, it is likely many patients died there during his practice of ~26 years. Stories of subsequent owners/occupants suggest others have encountered their own demise, such as a gentlemen in the 50s/60s that died in the upstairs bathroom, a young boy that died from falling down the front staircase (recently spoke with the relatives of this little boy; got name and keywords), and more. In 2006, The previous owner bought the house after being vacant for a few years. During its restoration, strange activity started to occur. Activity in the house continued, and even increased, subsequently earning the name ‘Whispers Estate' after guests repeatedly reported hearing disembodied voices whispering in their ears. I’m not trying to be negative. Rather, this week’s #hurdlemoment is all about identifying common reasons that we lack follow-through. When was the last time you had a goal that you let slip through your fingers? Could you have done something differently to impact the outcome? Well, there's good news: Failures happen to teach us something. Just like we have the opportunity to succeed and be better for it, same goes for failure. Chin up, Hurdlers; there’s a whole lot of winning to be done. SOCIAL @hurdlepodcast @emilyabbate MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE WOLACO | WOLACO You've been asking for a run meet-up, and here we go!
