We've got Rocky Block with us for this week's new episode of Stories Behind the Songs! I have known Rocky for years because I was close friends with his father and it's been so cool to watch his career take off, from playing bass on a cruise line to having several top 40 hits, all within just a few years. It seems like Rocky has a writing credit on every hit single and #1 album lately. He's collaborated with some of the biggest names in country music and has too many great cuts to list, but a few highlights include: “Can't Help Myself” by Dean Brody, “Man Made a Bar” by Morgan Wallen and Eric Church, “Cowgirls” by Morgan Wallen and Ernest, “Broadway Girls” by Morgan and Lil Durk, “Whiskey Bent” by Cody Johnson and Jelly Roll and other cuts such as “Hammer to the Heart” with Teddy Swims who he says is not only a “generational talent” but also just a super nice guy. In this episode, we also cover his collaborations with Larry Fleet and Ashley Gorley, signing with Big Loud Publishing, writing “Jupiter” with Georgia Webster, being a fan of the artists he's in the writer's rooms with, and finding inspiration with new co-writers. He also gives us a quick performance of “Cowgirls”, and as always, we get to hear the story behind it - the idea for this one came from the TV show, Yellowstone! If you enjoyed this episode, make sure to share it with your friends and give us a follow. We are passionate about sharing the Stories Behind the Songs and getting to know the songwriters behind the stories, and it's because of listeners like YOU that we are able to continue doing it. But you'll need to survive that long to make anything happen, so the Gearhead Consultancy chats up a few home-defense shotgun options (870, 500 and 1300, for example), and factors for recalcitrant applicant-operating cohost PK JustCaleb.  JustMark and JustIn are here to help - like any good geek should be. Welcome to another episode of Stories Behind the Songs. This week, we're joined by Adam James. Adam has been in Nashville since 2009 and shares some of his experiences in the industry with us, including co-writing Kenny Chesney's #1 hit "Knowing You" with Brett James and Kat Higgins. Adam takes us into the writing room, discusses the process of coming up with the concept, and reflects on everything that unfolded after hearing the news this one would be cut by Kenny Chesney. Adam also has notable cuts on Cody Johnson's new album, "Leather," with the songs "Double Down" and "Whiskey Bent". He talks about the excitement of hearing Cody cut these songs and dives into how Jelly Roll chose “Whiskey Bent” to feature on because he resonated with the material from the song. We also take a closer look at some of the lyrics from this song and Adam plays a small portion of it for us. Adam has been consistently writing with a cut coming out on Randall King's upcoming album, “Into the Neon” titled “Burns Like Her”. Give Adam a follow in the liner notes below to stay up to date with what he's working on and, if you enjoyed the stories from this episode, give us a follow. EDT is one year old! Phil and Jake celebrate by ranking podcasts, ranked lists and metatextuality on the List of Every Damn Thing. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: We don't talk about it in the episode, but we both watched Symbiopsychotaxiplasm, a noteworthy film dealing with metatextuality (though you could get a lot of the same effect from watching YouTube reaction videos or the Bo Burnham video where he reacts to himself). One thing that we enjoyed we enjoyed from Symbiopsychotaxiplasm was when a film crew member says that every husband and wife from the moment of birth are destined to say poorly written cliched banalities at each other and all they want to say is "you're cutting my balls off" and "you're not a real man". Phil mentioned a podcast where you can listen to old Knicks games along with commentary. He has no proof that such a podcast exists, maybe he dreamed it. He's listened to commentary of old games on Knicks Film School but not the actual audio broadcast. He's sure such a thing could exist though. Other podcasts mentioned include This American Life, Planet Money, Radiolab and WTF with Marc Maron. In one scene in Luca, the characters watch Big Deal on Madonna Street. BD on MS is a really influential crime/caper movie. Heist type movies seem like they're all either remakes of this movie or Rififi (which BD on MS itself seems like a response to). TV shows discussed include The Office, Fleabag, Moonlighting, Saturday Night Live, Frasier, Batman: The Animated Series and Watchmen. Songs discussed include “Something to Ride To” & “Freaky Tales” by Too $hort, “We Got the Beat” by The Go-Gos, “1999” by Prince, “The Ghost of Tom Joad” & “Dancing in the Dark” by Bruce Springsteen, “Tulsa Time” by Don Williams, “Hips Don't Lie” by Shakira, “Jackin' for Beats” by Ice Cube, “Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone)” by Cinderella, “Whiskey Bent and Hellbound” by Hank Williams, Jr. and “Ramblin' Man” by Hank Williams. We talk a bit about the Grant Morrison run on the comic series Animal Man, Phil remembers issue #5 (“The Coyote Gospel”) where Wile E. Coyote is reimagined as a Christ figure who dies over and over again in our world to redeem his own. Bonkers shit. Jake mentions issue #26 (“Deus Ex Machina”), where Morrison himself appears in the comic. Jake also talks about Morrison's The Invisibles, which he hasn't read, but has heard about it containing some magic where the author trades places with one of the characters. for the record, Phil says that Morrison uses a non-gender binary pronoun but the author's own website uses he / him / his so Jake probably isn't guilty of misgendering. Jorge Luis Borges also dealt extensively with himself as a character. Here's the short piece we mentioned. He's maybe the most meta writer. The idea of Countryman and the Cinematograph seems to be "country people don't know that movies aren't real". The idea of people not knowing movies aren't real is fun, which is probably why so many people-- including your humble hosts-- repeat the probably-urban-legend of people running for cover during early screenings of Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat. In the back of Las Meninas you can see the painter, Diego Velázquez. Phil was trying to remember the Hal Hartley movie Flirt in which the same dialogue is used three different times. He tries to remember the name of this movie a couple times a year but It's kind of boring so it's difficult. Other movies discussed include The Princess Bride, The Truman Show, Deadpool, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, Caddyshack, Watchmen, the Star Wars movies, The Matrix, Trading Places, E.T. the Extra Terrestrial, the Wayne's World movies, Spaceballs, The Last Starfighter and Howard the Duck. Gimme me an R! O! C! K!, What you got? Well tonight you get a Canadian Geek interview with legendary Helix vocalist, Mr. Brian Vollmer! For over 40 years now Helix, have been tearing up stages and eardrums of rock fans worldwide. They are definitely contenders in the” hardest working band” category and with the touring schedule they have planned this summer it seems they have no intention of slowing down anytime soon. This time out they will be supporting a brand new Helix album, “Old School! Some may argue it’s actually an old album, doesn’t matter “Old School” is now available here in Canada and will be released in the US and Europe on July 14th through Parris records. Brian was gracious enough to join the Canadian Geeks on the phone to discuss this somewhat unique album of from Helix. As the story goes, Brian uncovered a collection of tapes containing unreleased songs that were written and recorded between 1981 and 1989. A Helix fan’s treasure chest and the decision was made to release this music, aptly titled “Old School”. Ten tracks, many written by Brian and the late, great Paul Hackman including three songs that were originally written for 1987’s Back For Another Taste record. During the interview, we get a good news update on the condition of Helix drummer “Fritz”, some track by track synopsis of the album and a thorough list of upcoming Helix live shows. Best of all Brian encourages us to spin the new music with our listeners. It’s an amazing trip back in time with some instant (new?) Helix classics. Standout tracks include “Whiskey Bent & Hell Bound”, “If Tears Could Talk” and the smoking track “Games Mother Never Taught You” featuring the aforementioned Paul Hackman on guitar. Canada’s heavy metal cowboys continue to deliver. Pick up your copy of Old School and be sure to catch them live this summer!

Technical stuff is technical.  We're working on things.  Forgive the lack of music...and, well, the echo. Stick with us.  We're tweaking things and trying to improve things.  Comment, follow, do what you do.  We appreciate the listens. Also we lost, so Mike was sad.  He's a bitch.  We're going to tweak some things going into this week because you know, Ohio State and we need to stay fresh.  Enjoy - or at least try.

I love that I get to share a conversation like this one. Tim Zack and his band mate and guitarist Jeff Westwood were not only super fun to hang out with, but they told me so many amazing stories and they shared some really fantastic insight into making their band successful. Banding together and staying strong amidst long, late hours and little time off is an almost insurmountable task which they make look easy. This Nebraska based band has been together for 7 years and knows how to rock out with crowds from Sturgis to The Grizzly Rose.

Hicks kicked off 2013 with two European hits on the European Country Top 40, he then represented Sweden at the CMA Global Show in Nashville as part of the CMA Fest week in June along with various acts from around the world and all the top American country artist such as Taylor Swift, Keith Urban, Lady Antebellum Tim McGraw and many more. This event were beamed live around the world via the Internet and audio streams to over 10 stations in the USA, Europe, and Australia. He then was asked to appear at two of CMR Nashville’s International Shows on Broadway at the Whiskey Bent and The Bridgestone Arena, if this wasn’t enough he was invited to be part of the CMA Fest Autograph signings at the Digital Rodeo booth with thousands of fans walking around in the brand new Music City Venue one of the biggest exhibition venues in the world. More to follow when asked to appear as a special guest at ‘A Night For Heroes’ a fund raiser for returning soldiers. Hicks (Miqael Persson) is also an accomplished songwriter with most of his live material being written by himself and other co-writers. Whilst in Nashville he was able to co-write with top songwriters Anthony Smith, Dallas Rogers, Dennis Morgan and Sharon Vaughn. He met with his USA publisher and learned that a song he wrote ‘Cuts Like A Diamond’ on his last USA visit was picked up by the Little River Band. Not only did they record it, but used the title of their new album to be released in August when they start a nationwide tour of the USA to promote it. Other artists such as Jimi Jamison (Survivor) Giant (Dann Huff) Bobby Kimball (Toto) W.E.T (Featuring Jeff Scott Soto) Grammy nominated Toby Hitchcock and many more have recorded his songs...Born in the southern part of Sweden (Helsingborg) Miqael grew up with a dream of making a living on his music. Playing in local bands he wrote music, toured and learned the chops as an artist and songwriter. He soon moved to Stockholm to pursuit his dream of being a songwriter. His first cut with an other artist was the Swedish band Barbados that cut one of his country songs. The album went Gold and the band got a Grammy for Best Album. Pretty good start as a songwriter. Since then he has picked up more Gold and Platinum albums.
