This week we’ll hear from singer, songwriter, and producer Mark Miller. For over four decades, Mark has been a driving force in music as the lead singer of the legendary country band Sawyer Brown. Beyond the stage, he’s been the guiding hand behind Casting Crowns, producing their music for over twenty years. Now, as Sawyer Brown celebrates its fortieth anniversary with a brand new album and a documentary directed by his daughter, Mark reflects on how his life and career have prayerfully unfolded. Later in the episode, we’ll hear from Hope Reagan Harris. Hope never set out to start a global movement. She was simply a wife, a mother, and a former corporate professional searching for her next steps. But when she leaned into where God was leading her, she discovered that purpose doesn’t pause—it multiplies. It’s just a part of everything that I do in my being. From the time I get up to the time I go to bed, I want the Holy Spirit to just cover me and carry me throughout every minute of my waking day.” - Mark Miller “As I reflect on the forty-year career, I just know that I’ve been amazingly blessed that God has given me this timeframe, and I’ve always wanted to be a good steward of the blessings, the fans, the platform.” - Mark Miller “[As musicians], we’re judged every day on whether our songs are good or not, or whether we have a hit song or not. Well, I don’t have to worry about that when I think of who I am as a man. Because I know who I am in the eyes of Jesus.” - Mark Miller “God sees me right now. I’m not missing out. God has eyes on me, He’s seeing me, and He’s sending what I need right when I need it.” - Hope Reagan Harris “I look at my life and I feel like God is just reminding me that there’s nothing He can’t do. Closing out a spectacular year, he received the American FFA Degree for excellence, the organization's highest accolade. Timmy McKeever, growing up in Huntingon, California McKeever started his musical journey at age nine after hearing his third grade teacher play worship songs after class. That intrigued young Timmy so much that he picked up a beginner guitar they had lying around the house and started playing around. From there it blossomed into writing music and playing shows. “My whole childhood I would play 2-3 shows during the weekend and go to school during the week. Write music after class. I just fell in love with it” he shares. McKeever got offered a development deal with Jim Cantino over at Droptine Records. McKeever just released his debut album “Devils and Angels”, and it's been getting good feedback. “Devils in Angels is an album that follows all the aspects of love from the beginning to the end and the aftermath. All the highs and lows and in betweens. It's very personal to me because the title track was the first song I ever wrote where I thought this is something really special to me.” He adds that he saved the song for the past two years because he wanted it as the title track of his debut project. In 2011, Heath received a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to sing lead vocals for Restless Heart, a band he admired since childhood. Bracken Hudson is the owner of Country Fan Fest, a 4 day country music festival held in Tooele Utah. In just a few short years, Country Fan Fest has gone from a startup festival to Utah's largest outdoor music festival.
90's country made a positive mark on me. I loved the stories they told, the sense of pride they carried, and the twangy stringed instruments. Of course Country wasn't always like this. Country music pioneers, for better or worse, created new sounds and new tones by mixing genres in order to infiltrate and widen their market. People like Conway Twitty & Johnny Cash paved a way for 90's country artists like Billy Ray Cyrus, The Dixie Chicks, and Sawyer Brown. People of the early 2000's like Keith Urban, Rascal Flatts, and Big & Rich paved a way for today's artists like Florida Georgia Line, Morgan Wallen, and Jason Alden. And that brings me to today's topic of John Rich of Big & Rich. A little on his career, a little on his extracurriculars, and a lot on his whiskey “Redneck Riviera”. But Where did John Rich get his start? Has he ever been in a full band? What is Texasse? Is his whiskey any good? Does it Mix well? Can you class up a Redneck Riviera? What does Proof mean? And is this the American version of a Canadian whiskey? Well we will discuss this, and more on this group therapy session with Nick, on the Tweed Couch --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tweedcouch/support

Shownotes:Eddie and Chris join music legend Mac McAnally in a delightful conversation about music, making your mark, and leaving the world a better place than you found it. Mac is a native of Belmont, Mississippi, but he's better known as a country music singer, songwriter, session musician, and record producer. He is an award-winning talent who has worked with country stars Kenny Chesney and Sawyer Brown, and he is a long-time member of Jimmy Buffett's band, The Coral Reefers.Mac's career started at just 13 years old, when his parents allowed him to play piano in a honky tonk bar in Iron City, Tennessee. He left high school in the 11th grade to pursue his music career (which, even though it worked out for him down the line, he wouldn't encourage anyone else to do). He sees his role in the music industry as being “Johnny Musicseed,” carrying the responsibility of helping up-and-coming artists realize their dreams.Resources:Find Mac online and on social media: Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Instagram, and Spotify Find his latest album, “Once in a Lifetime,” here.

Sugarcane Jane, comprised of Anthony Crawford and Savana Lee, recently opened for Dwight Yoakum and tour extensively across the Southeast. Based in Loxley, Alabama, the couple first met at a recording studio in Nashville. Anthony began playing and touring with Neil Young when he was only 24. He also made his Grand Ole Opry debut at 18, performing with the legendary Roy Acuff. I sat down with Savana and Anthony at SOWAL House in Rosemary Beach, FL, to chat about their careers and writing songs for Steve Winwood, Kenny Rogers, Sawyer Brown, Lorrie Morgan, and many others. Ruffled Feathers, Songs In the Key of Me, is the duos latest release.
Ephesians 1:3-4. It might be a strange thought. God is blessed. Without understanding the fact that God is blessed and without knowing what it is that blesses him, you may miss why God is blessed. When you see why God is blessed and what blesses him, you will immediately become increasingly joyful. We are redeemed to be holy and have been adopted into a wonderful family by a very happy God. Enjoy a sweet intro brought to you by my grandson, Sawyer Brown. Need more information? www.gospelinreallife.org. We would love to hear from you!
Hobie talks about the band's roots (thanks, Ed!), his favorite piano players, and the song that endeared them to a legion of Husker fans over 25 years ago.
SUMMARYOur guest is critically-acclaimed singer/songwriter Paul Thorn, who has carved out an independent career from his home base in Tupelo, Mississippi, that has earned him legions of dedicated fans. His latest release is a highly personal album titled Never Too Late to Call. PART ONEPaul and Scott chat about the Grammy Awards, somehow find a way to make it all about them, and figure out that being a guest on Songcraft is a great way to get a Grammy nomination. PART TWOOur in-depth conversation with Paul ThornABOUT PAUL THORNTupelo, Mississippi, native Paul Thorn started out as a professional boxer before being discovered by Miles Copeland and signing a recording contract with A&M Records. Thorn eventually struck out on his own and formed the independent Perpetual Obscurity Records with manager and songwriting partner Billy Maddox. They've gone on to release nine studio albums, four of which have hit the Billboard charts. All Music writes that Thorn's catalog has “balanced blues, rock, gospel, country, and soul in a singular strain of Americana with songs that embrace the human condition with their humor, irony, pathos, tenderness, heartbreak, grief, anger, and joy.” Though his songs have been recorded by Shenandoah, Tanya Tucker, Toby Keith, Sawyer Brown, Kim Richey, Billy Ray Cyrus, Jerry Jeff Walker, Diane Schuur, and others, nobody delivers a Paul Thorn song with the same touch as the man himself. From “It's a Great Day to Whup Somebody's Ass” to “Pimps & Preachers” to “I Don't Like Half the Folks I Love” to “Mission Temple Fireworks Stand,” Paul's diverse catalog has built a dedicated audience who love his unique sense of the craft and his mesmerizing skills as a performer. His latest album, produced by Matt Ross-Spang in Memphis, is Never Too Late to Call.
In this weeks Podcast I finally get to talk to a long time friend and fellow drummer Joe Smyth from Sawyer Brown. I think he holds the record for the 'longest running drummer in a band and still playing' category. He still holds together the groove with this amazing entertaining band as well as teaches drums and percussion at a school in (Brentwood) Nashville when he's not touring. I have much respect and admiration for Joe and we had a great time chatting together.
Steve and Darren discuss Darren's continuous detective work, this time going down a rabbithole over just how active David Lee Roth was from the mid-90's to the 2007 Van Halen reunion -- and beyond. How much new and previously-unheard music was recorded then? Or have we heard it already in various places -- like Dave's "No Holds Bar-B-Que" video and in "Roth Show" podcast episodes? This week's interview is super-successful country music songwriter Scotty Emerick. Scotty co-wrote Dave's "new" song, "One Piece Thermo-Molded Country Plastic Chair," that was just (re)released via YouTube, dedicated to the recent Kentucky tornado victims. Known primarily for his work with Toby Keith -- penning several of Keith's singles -- Emerick has also written for Sawyer Brown, George Strait and Kenny Chesney, among other artists. In 2004, Emerick was named "Songwriter of the Year" by the Nashville Songwriters Association.
We'll do a plumbing project with Mickey Mouse in the Sorcerer's Apprentice, update our homeowners insurance policy with Home Alone, and check the news, where Shere Khan has signed on with the Forest Service as the voice of new fire prevention campaign. We'll also check all of your best Fairy Tale Typos, from "Little Miss Mullet" to "Jack Splat" to "Snow White and the Seven Doors" (featuring Snow's marathon run on Let's Make a Deal). Finally, Andrew Mitchell is back to fire up Rapunzel's Jukebox, bringing us back to the 90's with a Sawyer Brown song revisited as "Some Belles Do."
On Episode 11, we're joined by our first present-day and new artist, BJ Barham, the lead vocalist and chief lyricist of American Aquarium. The North Carolina-based Barham and AA released a surprise album today--the aptly titled Slappers, Bangers & Certified Twangers, Vol. 1--the band's ninth full-length studio album and first covers record. As you expect the 10 songs found on Slappers are an ode and tribute to the music, songwriting, and artists of the early '90s. During this episode, we talk about the early inspiration behind the project, the blue-collar anthems and earnest storytelling of the '90s collection, how '70s & '80s rock songwriting influenced country music, early memories of listening to the radio in rural North Carolina, and why & how bands and artists like Sawyer Brown, Sammy Kershaw, and Patty Loveless wound up seeping into the American Aquarium sound.
