We've got Rocky Block with us for this week's new episode of Stories Behind the Songs! I have known Rocky for years because I was close friends with his father and it's been so cool to watch his career take off, from playing bass on a cruise line to having several top 40 hits, all within just a few years. It seems like Rocky has a writing credit on every hit single and #1 album lately. He's collaborated with some of the biggest names in country music and has too many great cuts to list, but a few highlights include: “Can't Help Myself” by Dean Brody, “Man Made a Bar” by Morgan Wallen and Eric Church, “Cowgirls” by Morgan Wallen and Ernest, “Broadway Girls” by Morgan and Lil Durk, “Whiskey Bent” by Cody Johnson and Jelly Roll and other cuts such as “Hammer to the Heart” with Teddy Swims who he says is not only a “generational talent” but also just a super nice guy. In this episode, we also cover his collaborations with Larry Fleet and Ashley Gorley, signing with Big Loud Publishing, writing “Jupiter” with Georgia Webster, being a fan of the artists he's in the writer's rooms with, and finding inspiration with new co-writers. He also gives us a quick performance of “Cowgirls”, and as always, we get to hear the story behind it - the idea for this one came from the TV show, Yellowstone! If you enjoyed this episode, make sure to share it with your friends and give us a follow. We are passionate about sharing the Stories Behind the Songs and getting to know the songwriters behind the stories, and it's because of listeners like YOU that we are able to continue doing it. Have you ever felt that to connect with God, you must be within the four walls of a church? The truth is, God's presence isn't confined to stained glass windows and wooden pews. As I delved into Larry Fleet's song "Where I Find God," I was reminded that the sacred can be found in the simplicity of a drive, the tranquility of nature, or the quiet moments of self-reflection. It's all about the discovery of divine presence in the most unexpected corners of our lives.

Jordan Dozzi joins us this week on Stories Behind the Songs! Jordan landed his very first number one on the charts ~ just this week actually ~ with Morgan Wallen! “Man Made A Bar” - written by Jordan Dozzi, Larry Fleet, Rocky Block, and Brett Tyler - was originally meant to be released by Larry Fleet. In this episode, we learn how Morgan heard it, loved it, and RELEASED it himself - sending it up the charts to number 1. Jordan's catalog of songs includes - “Things I Take For Granted” for Larry Fleet, “Get The Girl” for Seaforth, “Fine By Me” for Chase Matthews, “It Don't, He Won't, You Do” for Jake Owen, and a song for Nelly - which was his very first cut ever - CRAZY! We take a look at the stories behind all of these songs and as always - we get to hear Jordan play a couple of them.  Also discussed in this episode: Jordan's upbringing in Australia, the logistics of pursuing music as an Australian citizen in the US, making music signed under Big Loud and the type of community that comes with that, and he came in with Ernests's guitar because his girlfriend stole his. It was a Cole Clark and I definitely had to give it a play before he left… If you liked this episode, make sure to share it with your friends and give us a follow. It is our mission to bring you the Stories Behind the Songs from the songwriters themselves and it's because of YOU that we get to keep going. Let's get to it - this is Jordan Dozzi. Originally from St. Louis and a graduate of Belmont University, Emily Landis is a Nashville hit songwriter currently signed to BMG Music. She's written songs for many major country music artists including Larry Fleet, Seaforth, Tiera Kennedy, Kassi Ashton and more. Emily's first big success was with Gabby Barrett's "The Good Ones" which spent three straight weeks at Number One and is now 3x certified platinum.  On this episode, Emily shares how songwriting became her free therapy, what it was like quitting social media for an entire year, how the journey of her first number one felt like "dominoes of dreams coming true," and how it taught her to focus on family and life first, and let the career take care of itself. New Episodes every Tuesday.Find the host Troy Cartwright on Twitter, Instagram. Dave Kennedy is a renowned guitarist, but he is a storyteller above all else, and it's easy to see why, even in his business venture James Coffee. His songs paint a cinematic portrait of America as his characters journey through love, heartbreak, humor, sin, redemption, revenge, and perhaps even a few of the songwriter's own footsteps along the way. A founding. member of Angels. &. Airwaves, Dave is also known for his work as one of Nashville's most respected songwriters and artists, and why artists like Travis Tritt, Riley Green, Whiskey Myers, Drake White, Larry Fleet, and others have worked with him over the years. Hot off the heels of a tour with The Steel Woods, Dave sits down with Chats and Tatts host Aaron Della Vedova for an in-depth look into life as a musician as well as entrepreneurship and how personal circumstances and timing can play a significant role in starting a business. Dave shares his experience starting a coffee business when he was younger and had fewer responsibilities, allowing him to take risks and sleep on couches, emphasizing that passion and creativity can be more important than having a traditional business plan. In addition, the episode touches on the importance of having a challenge or creative project to stay motivated to combat mental health issues. Dave shares his experience of going through a period of depression when he attempted to take a break from work after COVID-19. He discovered that he needs a challenge or a creative project to stay engaged and motivated and the importance of finding something that interests and excites him to work on, as creative work can be a source of fulfillment and motivation. Aaron and Dave also get into a conversation about UFOs, plant medicine, and animal cruelty in the coffee industry. Jesus Calling: Stories of Faith
Where Do You Find God? with Dr. Michael Guillen and Larry Fleet

Jesus Calling: Stories of Faith

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 9, 2021 27:07

When talking about the concept of faith, the Bible tells us that “faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Even though we can't literally see God, the Bible also tells us simply; when we seek God, we shall find Him. The ways we seek and find God in the midst of our lives can look different from one person to another. One may study everything they can about how the world came into being, just to get a glimpse of the mind of God. Another may look for the moments in their lives where they felt God was in their corner, through a circumstance that worked out better than they could have imagined, or a seeming answer to a long whispered prayer. The truth remains that even though we can't see our Creator, we can know Him, believe in Him, and build a relationship with Him wherever we find ourselves in life. Our two guests this week have cemented their faith in God through different avenues—one, a scientist whose devotion to figuring out the secrets of the universe led him to believe in a divine creator, and another who shares with others through music all the places and situations in which we might find God. We'll talk to Emmy-award winning journalist and former physics instructor Dr. Michael Guillen, and country music singer and songwriter of the song “Where I Find God,” Larry Fleet.    Links, Products, and Resources Mentioned: Jesus Calling Podcast Hebrews 11 NIV 1 Chronicles 28:9 NIV Jesus Calling  Sarah Young Romans 12:2 NIV Jesus Listens   Dr. Michael Guillen Science editor for ABC News UCLA Cornell Harvard First Peter 3:15 NIV Believing Is Seeing Larry Fleet “Where I Find God” Gospel Song Sunday www.larryfleet.com   Interview Quotes: “God wasn't on my radar. He wasn't in the picture. My worldview was based on the notion that seeing was believing. What I believed in was what I could see with my own eyes.” - Dr. Michael Guillen “I was a thick-headed, stubborn intellectual and in some ways I still am. So it took me actually many, many years, decades actually, to finally surrender my life. But that encounter with that Bible, that was my first authentic—even though I was brought up as a child with a Bible—encounter with the Bible, as a thinking adult, as a scientist, as a skeptic, as a cynic, as an atheist. And boy, it turned my life upside down.” - Dr. Michael Guillen “In a nutshell, the Bible teaches who created the universe and why. Science teaches me the wonderful details about the universe God created. And because of the Bible and science, I have the blessing of having a very deep understanding of both the Creator and the creation.” - Dr. Michael Guillen “God is real, not just because the Bible says so, and not just because He radically changed my life, but also because the scientific evidence says so.” - Michael Guillen “Love God with everything you've got, including your mind, and then love one another.” - Dr. Michael Guillen “As a kid, I don't think I really realized that it was gospel music, that's just all I knew and that's what I knew how to play. So I'd always play just old hymns and stuff like that.” - Larry Fleet “I can tell you right now where I do most of my praying and talking to God, that's in a deer stand or a hayfield or on a boat, you know, like whenever I'm outside. I do a lot of driving from Chattanooga to Nashville a lot, and that's kind of where I talk to God.” - Larry Fleet “One of the things that I hope and pray for is that I do a good job of delivering the songs in a positive way. Honestly, a lot of times I pray before I go on stage just to calm my nerves.” - Larry Fleet ________________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel: Audio Playlist: https://bit.ly/2PrbuwH Video Playlist: https://bit.ly/2PsmEkJ What's Good? *Trigger Warning*  This episode contains content that talks about suicide and self-harm that could be disturbing to some listeners.    Many of us could never imagine that we would ever go through a dark time so dark and so hopeless that we would consider taking our own lives. Yet, so many people who have experienced deep depression know what it feels like when their minds can't seem to grasp on to hope any longer. During Suicide Prevention week, we'll speak to two guests whose lives have been directly altered by depression and suicide, American Idol alumnus Dave Pittman & singer Briana Domenica. Dave shares how he was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome at an early age, how being “different” and not understanding why caused problems at school, and how the hopelessness he felt sent him spiraling down a dark path toward taking his own life. Briana Domenica recounts her own struggles with suicidal tendencies and how she has tried to turn her pain into purpose by pouring her heart and soul into music—hoping she can uplift others and encourage an environment of positivity and love.    Links, Products, and Resources Mentioned: Jesus Calling Podcast Suicide Prevention week Sarah Young Jesus Calling Jesus Listens National Suicide Prevetion Lifeline: 1-800-273-8255 Past interview: Chad Robichaux Upcoming interview: Larry Fleet   Davd Pittman “Crazy Brave' song “Different Kind of Love” album Tourette Syndrome ABC's American Idol Neil Patrick Harris Bible Gateway   Briana Domenica Psalms 23:4 NIV Angel in the Sky Romans 8:28 NIV brianadomenica.com   Interview Quotes: “I was more afraid of living through that again than I was of dying.” - Dave Pittman, on being bullied as a child with Tourette Syndrome ”My mom—both my parents—just drilled into my head and my heart the importance of accepting yourself for who you are, and not just who you are, but who you are in Christ, your identity, who you've become in your walk with Christ.” - Dave Pittman “I think it's okay to ask why, even now, because Job did. We look at Job in the Bible, he asked God, ‘Why? Why is this happening to me?'” - Dave Pittman “Anyone can accept something they have to do, but when you can embrace something that you get to do, it's different. It changes things.” - Dave Pittman “I dealt with this hopelessness for four years until my aunt Linda noticed the cuts on my wrist. She kissed them and she told me I was worthy, loved, and a child of God. That conversation not only saved my life, but it encouraged me to get the help that I so desperately needed.” - Briana Domenica “I think simply starting a dialog can combat that [mental health] stigma because unless we start a dialog, we will never see change. And I want people to know that they are not alone. There is help, but most importantly, there is hope. And I love this acronym for hope: hold on, pain ends.” - Briana Domenica “Everyone's journeys are different, but moving from a place of darkness to light is possible. All you need is a little faith, even if it's the size of a mustard seed. Take it one day at a time, speak up, and reach out, because help and hope are available.” - Briana Domenica ________________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel: Audio Playlist: https://bit.ly/2PrbuwH Video Playlist: https://bit.ly/2PsmEkJ What's Good? Larry Fleet is a country singer steeped in the rhythms of soul. His facility with R&B lends a swagger to his honky tonk and a simmer to his ballads, qualities that brought him to the attention of Jake Owen and, in turn, to the televised country music competition Real Country. Once Fleet's season on Real Country wrapped up in 2018, he signed with Big Loud Records and released his debut album Workin' Hard in late 2019. A native of White Bluff, Tennessee, Larry Fleet was drawn to music at an early age, playing and singing in his family's bluegrass band when he was just six years old. He spent some time in Chattanooga before heading to Nashville. During those early days, he balanced his fledgling musical career with family life, writing songs and working as a promo man at WSM radio. An early publishing deal didn't generate any success, so he kept grinding away, writing songs when he wasn't working manual labor or as an electrician. Fleet's breakthrough arrived when he played a set of covers at a wedding barn party in 2017, a shindig Jake Owen just happened to attend. Owen took a shine to Fleet. The two became friends, Owen took the singer out on tour and, more importantly, helped him land a spot on Real Country, the USA Network talent competition which featured Owen as a judge. Fleet placed second on Real Country, by which time he had a handful of independent singles -- "Wasted Time," "Working Man," and "Die Young" -- to his credit. Big Loud Records, the label Owen called home, signed the singer to a deal in 2019. Fleet set to work with Joey Moi, a producer best known for his work with Florida Georgia Line and Jake Owen, and cut his debut album, Workin' Hard. Released in November 2019, the album featured the singles "Tied Down" and "Lied About Love." Fleet returned with new music in the summer of 2020 through the release of the single "Where I Find God." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ray-turnerofficial/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ray-turnerofficial/support

The Secret To Luke Combs' Chart-Busting Success

It's difficult to find Luke Combs' equal. Not now, not 10 years ago, not 30 years ago. Maybe not ever. The no-nonsense country singer and songwriter with a ‘90s country bent has released 9 singles to radio. Every one has reached No. 1. All but one has stayed there for multiple weeks. Since May of 2017 he's spent 26 weeks at the top of the country charts — that's a half year! — and I'm talking about the more illusive airplay chart, not the Hot Country Chart which is a mix of airplay, sales, streaming and witchcraft. A decade ago Florida Georgia Line went seven out of 8. In 1989 and '90 Clint black went five of seven. Garth Brooks? He batted closer to 500 for his first 10 singles. Is what we're experiencing real? Or is Luke Combs just a product of right time, right place? Is he what happens when the field narrows and country music radio shaves away all its rough edges? Is he a radio star who can't really get it done elsewhere or worse … is a poised for a big fall? My guest this week may know the answer. Chris Owen is a country chart expert who can recall just about every forgettable country song you throw at him, and the label, and how far it went on the Billboard or Mediabase country airplay chart. I like the way his mind works because he leans hard into stats and logic and not so much on emotion. Chris is an even hand in Twitter sea of screamers and criers and he's uniquely capable of find perspective as we watch Combs go No. 1 with the frequency of a 9-year-old who sucked down too many Coca Colas. Are we making too big a deal of what Luke Combs is quietly accomplishing? Is it fair to compare him to Garth or anyone? What is he doing that nobody else is? Let's find out, during Ep. No. 4 of the Country Music Media Podcast. Follow Chris Owen on Twitter. After the interview, it's "Pick-A-Hit."Chris' picks: Robert Counts, "What Do I Know"Larry Fleet, "Where I Find God"Runway June, "We Were Rich"Billy's PicksPriscilla Block, "Just About Over You"Cody Johnson, "Dear Rodeo"Elvie Shane, "My Boy"Finally, it's a postscript and this week's numbers.
