Jules Dassin had been blacklisted by Hollywood during the Red Scare nonsense in the '50s, so he went over to Europe and directed Jean Servais and many (not well-known) international actors. There's a lot going on here, especially the subtext about Dassin's treatment by Hollywood, but the centerpiece break-in is the highlight. Join hosts Jason, Anthony, and Tim as they discuss Jules Dassin's 1950 crime film Night and the City, a celebrated film noir picture (and film gris) shot on location in London. Like all of the directors discussed this season, Dassin was blacklisted during the infamous House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) hearings. The director subsequently relocated to Paris, where he made his groundbreaking heist film Rififi (1955), and later settled in Greece, where he lived the rest of his life. Dassin remained embittered about the blacklist and the Second Red Scare and never shied from speaking publicly about it. This history and a thorough analysis of the film are discussed at length in this episode. We hope you enjoy it!   

A true early classic of the Heist genre! What better way to get into subtitled movies than by checking out a film without dialogue for thirty minutes?

The year is 1955 and the movies are gentle. Brad Garoon assigns Jake Ziegler the Ladykillers, a movie ranked very high on the BFI Top 100 Films of All Time list, and lauded as one of Alec Guinness's most entertaining performances. They compare Alexander Mackendrick's version to that of the Coen Brothers 50 years later, and talk about Tom Hanks's odd accent decisions over the years. Jake then assigns Brad the Delbert Mann-directed and Paddy Chayefsky-written Marty, mostly because both hosts like Quiz Show and Marty was a huge part of that film. They talk bubble romance movies, where the world stops so two people have a little time to fall in love, and then they fall over themselves to praise the performances by Ernest Borgnine and Betsy Blair. A master thief, an escaped criminal, and an alcoholic former policeman walk into a jewelry store. No it's not a bad joke- it's The Red Circle. This week Leo and Charles are talking about Jean-Pierre Melville's classic. For The Vault Leo takes us back to 1985 with Richard Donner's adventure with misfits The Goonies. Charles is excited to take a wormhole to his Vault pick of Christopher Nolan's Interstellar. But the main take is 1970'S The Red Circle or as the French say, Le Cercle Rouge. It's a classic for sure, where Leo and Charles discuss the similarities it has to Rififi, using a marksmen to disarm the security, and the necessity of having a “fence” in on the heist. It's a lot of fun chatter when the movies are this good and Scene Stealers is happy to hit 40 episodes…Give a listen.

Returning to Watch With Jen this week, we have my very talented friend and an official (and very popular) friend of the show. William Boyle is the acclaimed novelist behind such titles as Gravesend, The Lonely Witness, A Friend is a Gift You Give Yourself, City of Margins, and Shoot the Moonlight Out. In addition to crafting these wonderfully humanistic Lumet-like character-driven ensemble crime epics, Bill is quite the pop culture buff and one hell of a good movie trivia game player too. Although he's a distinctly American writer-, given that he sets his sometimes interconnected tales in Brooklyn neighborhoods, Bill has quite a following for his work in France where he routinely visits for appearances and book events. Knowledgeable in his love of film, and continuing to foster his keen interest in the country, its people, as well as its cinema, this episode seemed like the perfect starting point for a new series that Bill & I will be revisiting in the future that's devoted to our love of French Crime Movies. This week we look back at a double feature of two iconic French thrillers, Jules Dassin's RIFIFI and DIABOLIQUE that opened at the Carnegie on February 15, 1957.
