Our guest on Stories Behind the Songs this week is Will Bundy! From a small town near Bristol, TN, Will has such a cool story that was so much fun to get into. We dive deep into his journey from mowing lawns and farming to producing demos that landed him in writing rooms with some of Nashville's biggest names right now like Riley Green, Thomas Rhett, and Ella Langley, as well as hit songwriters like Brett James, Forest Whitehead, and Ashley Gorley.  In this episode, you'll hear about how he hustled to learn demo production when he couldn't afford to hire anyone, carving out his niche in the industry as a “track guy”, his bold decision to rent out a studio on Music Row while living in Antioch, and writing his recent cut with Brad Paisley, “Truck Still Works”. He also shares stories about going on the road with Thomas Rhett and Rhett Akins and how that led to one of his career-defining songs, “Half of Me”.  With recent cuts for both Luke Bryan and Brad Paisley, PLUS producing the viral hit “you look like you love me” by Ella Langley, Will Bundy is a great example of how hard work, strong relationships, and sticking with it truly pays off. Make sure to watch to the full episode for some invaluable advice to young songwriters, and a performance of his hit with Thomas Rhett and Riley Green, "Half of Me”. If you liked this episode, make sure to share it with your friends and give us a follow. It is our mission to bring you the Stories Behind the Songs from the songwriters themselves and it's because of YOU that we get to keep going. Join America's Roundtable (https://americasrt.com/) radio co-hosts Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy with Kathie Lee Gifford — the four-time Emmy award winning former co-host of the fourth hour of “TODAY,” alongside Hoda Kotb. After 11 years together, Kathie Lee stepped down from that role in 2019 to pursue other creative endeavors. The Gifford-Kotb hour had been hailed as “appointment television” by Entertainment Weekly, and “TODAY's happy hour” by USA Today. Prior to NBC News, Gifford served as the co-host of “Live with Regis and Kathie Lee” for 15 years. In 2015 Gifford was inducted into the Broadcast & Cable Hall of Fame. She was recently awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. A playwright, producer, singer, songwriter and actress, Kathie Lee has starred in numerous television programs and movies in her 45-year career. She has written several musicals including Broadway's SCANDALOUS, which received a Tony nomination for Best Actress in 2012. In the fall of 2018 she wrapped post production on “Then Came You,” a film she has written, produced and starred in alongside Craig Ferguson. Gifford co-wrote the score for the film with Brett James. “Then Came You” was released in October of 2020. In April of 2019 she made her directorial debut with THE GOD WHO SEES oratorio, shot in Israel and based on a song she co-wrote with Grammy-nominated Nicole C. Mullen. She has authored numerous books, including her most recent book, "The God of the Way", and five New York Times bestselling books, including "The Rock, the Road, and the Rabbi" and "It's Never Too Late". Herod and Mary Ancient Evil, Living Hope Unveil the Truth Behind King Herod and Mary — Explore Their Lives Like Never Before with The First Book in This Eye-Opening Series! Behind the well-known names of Mary and Herod lies a story untold, until now. Kathie Lee Gifford's latest book ventures beyond the surface, exploring the intricate dynamics of their lives against the backdrop of ancient societal forces. The first installment in the Ancient Evil, Living Hope series, Herod and Mary begins with the tragic life of King Herod — Christianity's first true persecutor. As an impressionable boy, he is forever marked by the raw power of Rome. Throughout the course of Herod's career, he gains power, fame, and riches beyond belief. Yet murderous intrigues stalk this man — and infect his own dark soul. But, Mary saw the struggle of her people under a tyrant. Like all Jewish women, she knew the promises of Torah and longed for a deliverer. But no one could have prepared her for what the angel of God revealed: that the Messiah wouldn't arrive with the blaring of trumpets, the clash of arms, or the fanfare of a mighty host. He would arrive as an infant within her own womb. The light of the world was born in a cave: not a king who maims and destroys, but the gentle King of the Jews. Prepare to have your views on these historical figures forever changed… Through meticulously researched narrative and a fresh perspective, this book sheds light on the complex relationship between Mary and Herod. It combines historical accuracy with compelling storytelling, offering readers a unique opportunity to experience the biblical world from an insider's perspective. This riveting narrative nonfiction work reveals deep insight to how Herod came to power, how corruption and an ancient evil threatened the stability of a nation, and how a teenage Mary was called to traverse these obstacles to bring the Savior, Jesus, our living hope, into the world. Welcome to another episode of Stories Behind the Songs. This week, we're joined by Adam James. Adam has been in Nashville since 2009 and shares some of his experiences in the industry with us, including co-writing Kenny Chesney's #1 hit "Knowing You" with Brett James and Kat Higgins. Adam takes us into the writing room, discusses the process of coming up with the concept, and reflects on everything that unfolded after hearing the news this one would be cut by Kenny Chesney. Adam also has notable cuts on Cody Johnson's new album, "Leather," with the songs "Double Down" and "Whiskey Bent". He talks about the excitement of hearing Cody cut these songs and dives into how Jelly Roll chose “Whiskey Bent” to feature on because he resonated with the material from the song. We also take a closer look at some of the lyrics from this song and Adam plays a small portion of it for us. Adam has been consistently writing with a cut coming out on Randall King's upcoming album, “Into the Neon” titled “Burns Like Her”. James has become a fixture on the Billboard Country chart with thirteen #1 songs and scores of top 20 singles to his credit. In 2009, Brett achieved the Music Row “Triple Play,” an award for three #1 songs in a single chart year, not once, but twice! These six #1‘s; ‘It's America,' by Rodney Atkins, ‘Out Last Night,' by Kenny Chesney, ‘Cowboy Cassanova,' by Carrie Underwood, ‘Summer Nights,' by Rascal Flatts, ‘The Truth' by Jason Aldean, and ‘The Man I Want To Be' Chris Young earned James ASCAP Songwriter of the Year for the second time in October 2010.A native of Oklahoma City, Brett attended Baylor University, where he completed two years of medical school before moving to Nashville to pursue his dream of becoming a country star. In 1995, Brett James was signed to the Arista subsidiary Career Records and subsequently released his self-titled debut album. Career Records was later dissolved in consolidation, and with it, James's recording artist aspirations. Brett persevered as a writer at Patrick Joseph Publishing which fostered the relationships that destined him for success. In the year 2000, James received his first major album cut with the song ‘Love Is A Sweet Thing,' recorded by Faith Hill, followed by a top 20 single ‘You Won't Be Lonely Now,' with Billy Ray Cyrus. It wasn't long before Brett reached the benchmark that all songwriters and artists alike strive for, the coveted #1 song. In April of 2001, then-break-out artist Jessica Andrews landed James his first #1 with the song ‘Who I Am.' He returned to the top of the chart in 2002, this time with country superstar Martina McBride and the song ‘Blessed.'As his chart success continued, Brett appeared on Billboard Magazine's top-ten country songwriters list for five consecutive years, the only writer to do so, and in 2006 reached yet another musical milestone winning ASCAP Songwriter of the Year. In 2007, Brett received the music industry's highest honor winning the Grammy Award for Best Country Song ‘Jesus Take The Wheel,' recorded by Carrie Underwood. The list of artists that have recorded songs penned by Brett James resembles a who's who in the country music list but also straddles genre lines into American and world pop music. Some notable pop artists to record James' songs include Kelly Clarkson, Jon Bon Jovi, Daughtry, The Backstreet Boys, Chicago, and Leona Lewis. Brett has also scored #1 songs in Europe and a worldwide top 5 Latin hit with the song ‘Todo Mi Amor' recorded by Paulina Rubio. Outside the writer's room, Brett's talents have earned production credits that include Taylor Swift, Jessica Simpson, Josh Gracin, and MCA recording artist Kip Moore whose single “Somethin' ‘Bout a Truck” was a breakthrough smash in 2012!https://www.facebook.com/BrettJamesSongswww.GaryScottThomas.com

As we turn the page on 2021 and enter 2022, it's important to focus on what matters. Brett James, a Hall of Fame Songwriter, summed it up best when he described what he wanted his legacy be: love! “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.” – Matthew 22:37-39Love matters. It matters to those around us, it matters to our innermost being, and most of all, it matters to God. If love is the finish line, what are the guideposts along the way? How do we get there? In the New Year we hope to encourage you that in the race for love:  Goals Matter Time Matters Relationships Matter Brett's story shows us all that God puts each of us in a time and a place for a purpose. Sometimes it may be a trial we're in, where leaning into Jesus can provide us the way out and an invaluable lesson. Often it is in the deepest valleys when we can draw nearest to the Lord. Sometimes it's in the everyday – handling your career to provide for your family, keeping up with your small children who require so much of your energy, or maybe it's an area of ministry in which God has called you to use your gifts. Brett speaks about his path to a songwriting career and how so many try for years without success. Sometimes He places the most unlikely person in your path to show you a different way. Brett tried to make it for seven years before moving on and going back to medical school. But as much as he felt prompted to do this for the greater good of providing for his family, God moved in an unexpected way when he continued to use his gift. He persevered in his passion of songwriting while attending classes. God showed him (in record time) that this passion and gift would be rewarded as He carved out his own path for Brett's life.  Look around – there is plenty of evidence that you don't have to work in ministry to fulfill God's plan for your life. We are all gifted in certain areas and each job, task, or career can be a mission-field. If we keep our identity deeply rooted in Christ, we can find meaning in our lives, which is far greater than needing to find meaning in our careers. “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” – Colossians 3:23-24As we encouraged you to close 2021, this race is much easier to run with brothers, fellowship, and the accountability we can find when we don't go alone. Give the podcast a listen this month and follow up each Friday with a different focus on our Goals, Time, and Relationships to help you achieve what really matters this year and beyond.

It's not that silly a question when you consider two things. First, most Canadians didn't want this election to begin with. So, to see the Trudeau Liberals barely survive with a slimmer minority, (not the majority the prime minister coveted), will call his "mandate" into question. Second, it leaves it up to a wounded Trudeau to mop up the divisiveness of the campaign while coping with a new year that will be dominated by the fourth (fifth?) wave of the pandemic. Brett James, Senior Counsel at Sussex Strategy Group in Toronto offers his insights.

Brett James was heading for a career in medicine before moving to Nashville in the early '90s to pursue music. But after seven unsuccessful years he returned to Oklahoma to resume his studies, his dream seemingly over. The universe, however, had different ideas – three days after starting university again, he received news that Faith Hill had recorded one of his songs for her album, Breathe. Over the next five months Brett had no less than 33 songs cut and ended up with five Top 10 singles, signalling the end once and for all of a career in medicine. In the years since Brett has had more than 500 of his songs recorded, by artists as diverse as Bon Jovi, Kelly Clarkson, Tim McGraw and Keith Urban. He’s written numerous Number One hits, and in 2006 won his first Grammy for writing 'Jesus Take The Wheel' by Carrie Underwood. We talk about that rollercoaster ride in this interview, and how Brett went from being the next big thing in Nashville to (in his words) a has-been, before resurrecting his career and becoming one of the world's hottest songwriters.

A tractor cab might not seem like the ideal place for an aspiring artist to nurture her musical dreams, but it sure did the trick for Clare Dunn. Growing up in tiny Two Buttes, Colorado (population: 43), she spent days at a time helping plow and plant the family farm, sharpening her ears with uninterrupted music-listening in the driver’s seat, even as she strengthened her work ethic. “That’s where a lot of my creativity came from and where a lot of my vision was forged, was just having nothing else to do other than listen to music and dream all day long in the vast wide open of those plains,” she reflects. By the time the genial, grounded Great Plains native got the chance to record for MCA Nashville, she had fine-tuned her creative vision and was ready to do what it would take to make it a reality, which landed her in a truly unique position: she is the only female country artist in recent memory to have a hand in all of the writing, arranging and producing for her debut release, the Clare Dunn EP. “I remember feeling like, ‘I know that I’m asking my label to take this tremendous leap of faith on me. I will be in the studio day and night. I will go until it’s right,’” says the guitar-slinging singer and songwriter. “I feel so grateful that I’ve had a team around me that’s allowed me to do that and supported me every step of the way.” True to her word, Dunn spent virtually every waking moment holed up in The Cave at Nashville’s House of Blues studios, crafting her standout sound beneath the watchful eye of a Chuck Berry portrait with such A-list collaborators as Terry McBride, Jesse Frasure, and Ben West. And it definitely paid off. The hooks have irresistible pop-rock punch, the sentiments are shot through with heartland rock grit, the vocals show R&B-schooled rhythmic daring and the arrangements are both towering and dynamic. Every lick of guitar on there, from agile melodic figures to aggressive shredding, is hers. “I think there’s, like, one song where I didn’t play a mandolin part or something like that,” she says. “But other than that, every lead part is my playing—acoustic, electric, everything.” That goes for all of the vocal parts, too—except for a solitary Eric Paslay guest harmony. Dunn doesn’t sound quite like any other singer in any genre, but her sumptuous lower range and the attitude and lustiness she summons whenever it suits the song recalls such world-class pop performers as Pink or Annie Lennox. In her teens, Dunn geeked out over a VH1 “Behind the Music” documentary that showed Fleetwood Mac working out their meticulous vocal arrangements, and in the studio, she might devote as many as a dozen tracks to doubling the melody in a different octave or layering precision harmonies, which adds to the sheer size of her sound. Dunn began paying her dues back in southeast Colorado, where she grew up the second of two daughters born into a long line of farmers and ranchers. “We didn’t have any brothers,” she says. “We did basically everything that boys would normally do, driving 18-wheelers, combines, tractors. I was very grateful that my parents raised us with the mentality that we didn’t even think about it; it was just normal for us to do all that stuff. We were a small family operation, and it’s all hands on deck, all the time.” In her early years, Dunn soaked up her parents’ favorite classic rock and country records—lots of Bob Seger titles among them—and stocked up on Top 40 singles when the family made the trek to a store in a neighboring town that actually had a record bin. She also absorbed all manner of rhythmic pop and R&B during marathon dance classes, so devoted to her hip-hop dance team that she won a scholarship to study with Janet Jackson’s backup dancers in California. Says Dunn, “My mom wore out an engine in a Suburban hauling me back and forth to dance. I couldn’t go every day like the other kids, because I lived an hour away. So I would do makeup days, and spend all day from 10 in the morning to 10 o’clock at night just learning dances so that I could be in the recitals and competitions. Dance, for me, is such a form of expression. When I’m making music, I’m thinking about it from a dance perspective—beats and musicality and phrasing.” For all of her sonic smarts, the aspiring musician lived in a town with zero places to play live shows, and she had no clue how to pursue her dream after high school until she heard about the music business program at Nashville’s Belmont University. The private school was out of her family’s price range, but she didn’t let that stop her, raising a big chunk of her tuition by driving a silage truck. “Anytime that there wasn’t school going on,” she recalls, “I was on that truck. Spring break, summer break, fall break. If you could’ve grown silage in December, I would’ve been on it over Christmas break. Whenever I couldn’t be home to drive the truck, my family kept the wheels rolling. My mom, dad and sister all drove it for me when I couldn’t be there due to classes or internships.” It wasn’t until Dunn got to college that she learned how to play guitar. Unlike a lot of dorm room dabblers, she wasn’t content to just reach the point where she could accompany herself by strumming basic chords. “Whenever I’d try to talk to a guitar player and explain how I heard things, I could never explain it,” she says. “So I thought, ‘If I can’t explain it to them, I’d better see if I can learn how to do it myself, so I can get it the way that I hear it in my head.’ Lead guitar, for me, was where it was at. I had no interest in learning G, C, and D and stopping. I wanted to be able to sing on guitar.” After college, Dunn signed a deal that went sour and turned her attention to building a grassroots following through decidedly unglamorous touring. “I loaded up me and three guys in a four-door F-150 pickup and a trailer and we took off,” she laughs. “We put 100,000 miles on it in just a little over a year. We played bars—teeny, tiny bars—and honky-tonks and festivals. It was very bleak to start out with, pinching pennies, trying to magically make a dollar turn into three dollars, trying to keep morale up. Like, ‘I know we played for two people tonight, guys, but it’s fine. We’re gonna get beyond it!’ My family helped me then too. They believed in me so much that they were willing to sacrifice in order to help me build that following to get a record deal.” The audience quickly multiplied when SiriusXM’s The Highway channel put Dunn’s flirtatious number “Cowboy Side of You” in rotation, and the fans who came out to the shows found a vital, confident band leader stomping around, swapping fearsome solos and singing likes she meant it. Universal Music Group Nashville soon snatched her up, and she attracted in-demand co-writers like Paslay, West, Frasure, McBride, Tom Douglas, Liz Rose, Hillary Lindsey, Troy Verges, Chris Lindsey, Brett James, and Ryan Beaver, and hit the road with many of her musical heroes including Keith Urban, Miranda Lambert, Luke Bryan, and Seger, who hand-picked Dunn as direct support on his Ride Out Tour. Now, that her with-it, down-home vision is captured on record and her sensuous single “Tuxedo” is impacting the country radio, Dunn is in the position to bring her music back to the people and places that taught her what determination was in the first place. “I can confidently say I would not be in this chair had it not been for that work ethic my parents and community instilled in me,” says the forward-thinking, farm-bred artist. “It’s been a tough road getting here and it’s taken longer than I would’ve liked, but I’ve always felt confident in setting and pursuing my goals. That work ethic is what drove me to learn how to play, and to go back out and play another show for ten people. Where I’m from, that’s just what you do—you work.”

Songcraft chats with Brett James, a two-time ASCAP Country Songwriter of the Year who has earned 25 #1 hits with songs such as “Who I Am” by Jessica Andrews, “Bottoms Up” by Brantley Gilbert, “I Hold On” by Dierks Bentley, and Carrie Underwood's “Jesus Take the Wheel,” which was nominated for ACM and CMA Song of the Year awards and won a Grammy for Best Country Song. In addition to his remarkable career as a behind-the-scenes Nashville songwriter, Brett has a recently-released artist EP called I Am Now.

Surviving the Music Industry

Songwriter Brett James admits that after writing over 3,500 songs, it's hard to write an idea that hasn't been said before. When you have cuts though from Carrie Underwood, Faith Hill, Kenny Chesney, Bon Jovi, Luke Bryan, Keith Urban, Florida Georgia Line, Kelly Clarkson, Meghan Trainor, and Nick Jonas. It's safe to say that he's not going back to med-school anytime soon. Just turning 50, Brett realized he had something different to say, but straight from him rather than somebody else. He released I Am Now after 20 years since his last original recordings. We take a look at his most recent EP release but also the complications of his early record deals in the '90s. The panic attack that led to his decision to quit music and then some of the major characters in his life that led him to be an award-winning, highly regarded songwriter in the song community.

Building a career, managing your career, and all things songs with artist Alex Hall and veteran music publisher Tim Hunze. Alex calls Gainesville, Georgia home but writes songs for himself and other writers in Nashville, TN. He grew up riding horses and playing sports, but music has always been an important part of his life. With encouragement from his middle school choral director, he began focusing specifically on singing. It was the summer before high school when he started playing guitar, singing at the local restaurants and bars and writing songs. We start the conversation when Alex started breaking in music and moving to Nashville. We dive into his newest song "Homesick" and what makes his writing style different than others. Visit  for tour dates and to check out all of Alex's music, and follow him @musicbyalexhall Then respected Nashville music publisher, Tim Hunze, comes in to talk things publishing and some insight into songs that he's learned through his career. Tim started his career by starting his own record label, right after graduating from college. After the label scored a hit video on BET and a charting single, Tim sold his interest and moved into the publishing world. In his first job as archive manager at Hamstein, he got his first cut and when it went to #14 on the Billboard Country chart he was promoted to Creative Director. He stayed with the company as it sold to Mosaic and then to Stage Three where he became General Manager. Under his management, Stage Three had over 15 #1 hits and helped Bobby Pinson become BMI 2009 Writer of the Year and Brett James become 2010 ASCAP Writer of the Year. In 2011, along with JP Williams, Tim started Parallel Music Publishing and in their first 4 years, they scored 5 #1 hits. The hits continue to pile for Tim and company. Tim shares some memorable moments working with writers like Bobby Pinson, Michael White, Brett James, Tom Shapiro, Tony Martin, Lee Miller, and Jon Mabe. He also shares the rollercoaster ride of supporting writers and the ups and downs of what it means to be a publisher. Tim is also the host of the AIMP Nashville Pubcast; a podcast that informs and educates current and future publishers and offers insight for songwriters. Erik Dylan has a story to tell. It’s one of the qualities that drew Kip Moore, who discovered Dylan at an open mic night in 2011 to bring him to his publisher Brett James, and attracted artists including Kip himself, Eric Paslay, Justin Moore, Eli Young Band, Thompson Square, Chad Brownlee, Brent Cobb and even Hinder to record his songs. He writes on Music Row with many of Nashville's hitmakers, but Erik will gladly tell anyone that his happiest moments in songwriting occured at his hero Guy Clark's workshop over black coffee. It’s not just his country colleagues that own a room with his sounds. The fifth generation Kansan has shared stages with some of the biggest names in music, from Lynyrd Skynyrd to Reckless Kelly. “If I drive ten hours in one direction to play a show and drive ten hours back that night to get to my family, those forty-five minutes on stage have to count,” he says. Heart of a Flatland Boy is a sonic collection five years in the making. The project was produced by Dylan, Randy Montana and Paul Cossette at Quad Studios in Nashville, TN.  Erik wrote the entire record with a handful of his favorite songwriters including Montana, Driver Williams (Eric Church Band), Douglas Waterman, Westin Davis, Andrew DeRoberts, Jake Mitchell and Adam James. “This album is 100% organic. No fluff. I played guitar and tracked vocals live with the band in the studio and I truly love what happened. It's not perfect—and I didn't want it to be perfect. I wanted it to be me," says Erik.
