It's Christmas week here at MOVIEHUMPERS (soon to be called THE PROJECTORS) and we're hitting up another classic era Christmas romantic comedy. The farce gets pretty thick in today's discussion but the charm is consistent in this comedy of errors starring a beaming Barbara Stanwyck in Peter Godfrey's 1945 comedy “CHRISTMAS IN CONNECTICUT”. Stanwyck plays Liz, a society gal who writes fictional first hand accounts of farm wife life. When a nice war hero, inspired by Liz's articles, wants to stay and visit then Liz has to figure out how to fake it all for the soldier and also her boss for fear of being fired. There's some contrived other plot points that thread this all together, including an engagement that Liz gets wrangled in to, but it's pretty hard not to feel the romance between the hunky sweet sailor and the society gal. Also starring Dennis Morgan, Sydney Greenstreet, Reginald Gardiner and S.Z. Sakall. If only she could tell him the truth and keep her job. I mean, she could. Why should her boss care? She's moving magazines ain't she? Stanwyck is a worthy comedic lead and this is one of the funnier of the Christmas Classics we've discussed. Front Row Classics is taking a look at one of the most underrated films in Bette Davis' filmography during her time at Warner Brothers. Brandon welcomes Samantha Mason to look at 1942's In This Our Life. Samantha is a history teacher and movie buff who cohosts the Movie Club podcast with former Front Row guest, Hayley Chow. Brandon and Samantha dive into a film that was both current and ahead of its time in many ways. Themes of racial prejudice and possible incest are peppered into John Huston's potboiler. The movie also features one of Davis' most unsympathetic character portrayals. She is supported by an amazing ensemble cast including Olivia de Havilland, George Brent, Dennis Morgan, Billie Burke, Charles Coburn and Hattie McDaniel.

Born in Memphis, singer/songwriter/guitarist, Billy Burnette spent most of his youth in the presence of father Dorsey and uncle Johnny (of the legendary Rock and Roll Trio). The Trio made the Rockabilly name famous by combining the name Billy and his cousin Rocky for the 1953 “Rockabilly Boogie” – thus making the term Rockabilly a household name. The legendary trio influenced a diverse array of Rock icons including: the Elvis, Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Rod Stewart, Aerosmith, and Ricky Nelson. Elvis used to spend many evenings jamming with the band. It's not surprising then that Billy started making music at the age of 7. At 15 Billy picked up a guitar and began writing songs. At 18, he was only a week out of high school when he recorded an album with famed Memphis hit-making producer Chips Moman (“Suspicious Minds” and “In the Ghetto” for Elvis). In his early 20's, Billy wrote songs for artists like Rod Stewart, Ray Charles, Roy Orbison, Tammy Wynette, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Everly Brothers, Conway Twitty, Loretta Lynn, Glen Campbell, and many more. In 1980, Billy met Mick Fleetwood (of Fleetwood Mac). The two musicians became fast friends and formed the band Mick Fleetwood's Zoo Soon after Billy began his journey as a member of one of the greatest rock bands of all time. Billy joined and toured with Fleetwood Mac between 1987-1995, appearing on many of their albums. In 2003, Billy co-wrote a tune for Bonnie Raitt and Ray Charles called “Do I Ever Cross Your Mind.” This tune appeared on the album Genius Loves Company, which was the last studio album that Ray Charles recorded and completed. The album garnered 10 Grammy nominations and won Album of the Year. In 2006, Billy Burnette returned to his roots and recorded one of the most revered Rockabilly albums of his career, Memphis in Manhattan. He not only recorded several original tunes – but also payed tribute to his father and uncle, by recording “It's Late” and “Tear it Up.” In addition, he recorded an Everly Brothers classic, “Bye, Bye Love,” and a song made popular by none other than his very own Memphis neighbour, Elvis: “Big Hunk of Love.” A collaboration with Shawn Camp and Dennis Morgan became the hit song “River of Love.” George Strait recorded the tune for his 2008 album Troubador, and “River of Love” went on to become Strait's 44th Number One hit single. In the last few years, Billy Burnette has contributed his talents as a guitar player and singer on tours with legendary musicians Bob Dylan and John Fogerty. Additionally, he also collaborates regularly with the Mick Fleetwood Band. Billy continues to write, record and perform today. He lives in Nashville and is still as passionate about making music as he has always been. I hope you enjoy the story of Billy Burnette's musical journey. If you'd like to learn more about him, check out his website http://billyburnette.net/ and if you'd like to suggest a guest you'd like to hear interviewed on A Breath of Fresh Air, reach out to me through my website https://www.abreathoffreshair.com.au
Holiday Month hits peak-merriment with Christmas in Connecticut! Ben and Anthony discuss the 1945 classic, in which screen legend Barbara Stanwyck hosts a total goof-fest in order to... preserve gender roles? Or maybe to critique them, if you're being generous? Listen along and decide for yourself! Directed by Peter Godfrey and starring Barbara Stanwyck, Dennis Morgan and Sydney Greenstreet.
In this episode, I discuss the life of Dennis Morgan. Many of you may remember his performance as seaman "Jefferson Jones", with Barbara Stanwyck in Christmas in Connecticut (1945).
Episode # 206 Rocker Mitch Malloy releases New Solo Album "The Last Song," his time in Van Halen and much more! MITCH MALLOY RETURNS WITH NEW SOLO ALBUM, ‘THE LAST SONG' FROM SING MARKET Mitch Malloy continues to rock the night away burning the midnight oil! After several years as the frontman for the iconic rock band Great White, Mitch returned to the studio writing and recording his new album, ‘THE LAST SONG.' The album will launch with an exclusive, limited release collector's edition vinyl through a partnership with SING. Pre-sales for the vinyl release will go on sale May 3, 2023. An international release will follow in June. Once again, Mitch is undertaking an album solely by himself from start to finish – song writing, producing, instruments, mixing and mastering. Mitch reveals, “For this record, I have really taken my time. In the past, I've usually been on deadlines. With this album, there was so much material in my head from a few years of not having a true creative outlet, so it was a lot to process. I'm thankful that I have been in a position to not rush my creativity. I've been tucked away in my Zen zone writing and recording... and amassing lots of new gear! Ha!” ‘THE LAST SONG' DELUXE PACKAGE will be released worldwide first on SING Market as a limited edition collectible 180 gram signed and numbered white vinyl record. This special vinyl bundle includes a signed CD, large poster, 8" X 10" photo, and more. All of this is attached to a limited, numbered and registered digital collectable bundle packed with behind-the-scenes videos, acoustic videos, a rare handwritten lyric sheet, and a Golden Ticket contest to win a private zoom concert where you hang with Mitch! After this very limited vinyl - digital collectable VIP bundle is gone - it's gone! Follow this link to purchase: https://market.singidea.com/market/asset/2abdeae1-ddbf-4d97-bd7a-8d345422ec0a/ Unboxing video here: https://vimeo.com/823080034?share=copy/ In addition to being an artist, Mitch is no stranger to the studio, and has worked with a variety of artists, labels, and brands from Taylor Swift, Boys Like Girls, Kenny Loggins, Craig Morgan, and Sony Music NY, to singer/songwriters Victoria Show, Gary Burr and Billy Falcon, and even voiceover work for Outdoor Channel, Field & Stream and many more. Mitch has even been the voice for Starburst candy! Mitch is also an award-winning songwriter, and has written with legendary songwriters like Jim Weatherly, Richard Lee, Mike Reid, Desmond Child, Dennis Morgan, Victoria Shaw and Gray Burr. He's been signed to publishing deals with Warner Chappell and Chrysalis Music, but later launched his own publishing company to control his copyrights. Mitch loves the craft of songwriting... telling a story and resonating with his audience. "Songs are so powerful... it's amazing just how much a song can impact a person's life," says Malloy. “Once again, life has delivered a lot of new material... from losing family members, to moving to the beach, to having a teenager. There's definitely no shortage of inspiration!” Mitch's tenure as an artist has spanned several decades beginning as a regular on the New York music scene in the 80s. Mitch soon garnered a major recording deal with RCA/BMG Worldwide, and achieved success on the pop and rock charts, landed a coveted spot on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and has toured globally. Mitch's voice has been highly sought after as a frontman for legendary acts as well as a guest vocalist on other artists' projects. In the mid-90s, Mitch was asked to replace Sammy Hagar as lead singer for Van Halen. But after spending time and recording with the band he declined. “When the band appeared on the MTV Music Awards with Dave [David Lee Roth], the fans expected his return – I expected his return. I felt as cool as the opportunity was, it just wasn't the right time,” said Malloy. Lastly, if you miss out on the SING Market bundles, ‘THE LAST SONG' CD (alone) will be available in the US on Malloy's label, Godsend Records, and internationally by Cargo Records based in the UK. Mitch looks forward to getting back out on the road and connecting with his fans in person. So, will this be the last song? According to Mitch, “Give it a listen, and you tell me!” “My hope with ‘The Last Song' record is that when listening you will experience some of the experiences and feelings and emotions I had while making it. If that happens then the world is a better place through music. And as always, I gave it everything I had. Crank it and enjoy!” https://www.youtube.com/@mitchmalloy3468/ https://www.facebook.com/MitchMalloyMusic/ https://www.mitchmalloy.com/ https://twitter.com/mitchmalloy/ https://www.instagram.com/malloymitch/ singmarket.com/ Subscribe to Pat's Soundbytes Unplugged Podcast, Pat's Soundbytes IGTV and Pat's Soundbytes Unplugged - Podcast Radio Show on YouTube for all the interviews and incredible content. Warner Bros executive George Feltenstein takes us through the Spring 2022 releases from the Warner Archive. We kick off the discussion with the March Blu-ray release of “Captains of the Clouds” (1941) starring James Cagney, Brenda Marshall, Dennis Morgan, and directed by Michael Curtiz. Beautifully restored in Technicolor, this film has never looked so good. Next George details the David O. Selznick version of “A Star is Born” (1937) starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March, and directed by William A. Wellman. This film has been in desperate need of restoration and this new blu-ray returns it to the proper sound and visual it deserves. And we wrap up the month with a review of the classic TV show "Head of the Class" season 4 on DVD, starring the late Howard Hesseman. Kevin Costner rules April with Blu-ray releases of two films released in 1985. The first is "American Flyers," followed by the cult favorite "Fandango." For May, George reviews the Blu-ray of "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" (1941) starring Spencer Tracy in both roles, and co-starring Ingrid Bergman and Lana Turner. Next is "The Carey Treatment" (1972) starring James Coburn and Jennifer O'Neill. And also in May is season 5 of the hit TV show "Lucifer," on Blu-ray. We wrap up the podcast with a discussion on the recent 4K release of "Singin' In the Rain" and what it could mean for future 4K releases of Warner Bros classics.

Monster Kid Radio's Derek Koch makes his belated return to the show so that we can finally wrap up our multipart series on William Castle westerns of the 1950's! It certainly took us long enough, huh? Without us realizing it this episode could have been labeled a Patricia Medina double feature! But are these last two movies actually westerns? Listen and find out. DUEL ON THE MISSISSIPPI (1955) is close since it takes place in 1820's Louisiana and it involves a duel with pistols. But it is really much more a plantation adventure with river pirates stealing sugarcane and a romantic plotline that is more than obvious from the beginning. It's a colorful widescreen tale filled with bad guys, a sort-of bad girl and a fair amount of time spent on a riverboat. The cast is uniformly excellent with easily a dozen faces familiar to fans of older movies with Lex Barker and Miss Medina leading the dance. We spend a good deal of time discussing her career and marveling at her range. URANIUM BOOM (1956) is a much more modern tale focused on the men swarming through Colorado in the 1950's as part of the rush to find the titular radioactive ore. Dennis Morgan and William Talman become partners in search of riches but run into trouble when they realize they are in love with the same woman. The film becomes a darker tale than expected with these two men fighting to control their mining operation and with Talman's character pulling some downright nasty tricks to break up his buddy's marriage. It's an interesting story and well worth seeing even if Miss Medina has significantly less screen time than in the earlier picture. If you have any comments or suggestions about the podcast or this episode in particular thebloodypit@gmail.com is where we can be reached. And, of course, Derek can be heard every single week over on Monster Kid Radio. How does he do it? Thanks for listening!
Many talented people have lived in the Northwoods, and every now and again one of them achieves national fame. One such person was Stanley Morner from the town of Prentice in Price County. Although few people today recognize his name, in the 1940s under the stage name of Dennis Morgan, Stanley Morner was considered an A-list star and one of Hollywood's leading men. Stanley Morner was born in December 1908 in Prentice. His father was employed at the Roddis Lumber Company, and when Stanley was old enough, he learned the lumber business from the bottom up. His father had him sawing trees and blowing out stumps. He liked to fish, got into frequent fights, and earned the nickname “Toughy.” Morner was more than a tough kid fighting in the lumber yard. He had a natural singing voice, and his parents made certain he took piano and singing lessons with Mrs. Nellie Kelley in Prentice. He attended grade school in Prentice and three years at Prentice High before his parents moved to Marshfield.

Growing up in a rural town in California, Dennis Morgan, PT, DC always saw himself as an "average guy" that had to work harder just to keep up. His efforts to do so sent him across the world, spending time with some of the legends of physical therapy: Maggie Knott, Freddie Kaltenborn, and Olaf Evjenth. The primary lesson he learned from these individuals was simple: focus on the patient. This unfailing focus on the patient, along with his varied learning opportunities, led to the creativity Dennis is known for in the clinic. In the early days, Dennis had to import exercise balls from outside the country, developed the Morgan Traction Harness to exercise spinal patients earlier in the rehabilitation process, and says he challenged those around him to "do something every day that you've never done before."______________________________Continue the discussion in our Facebook group, Mindful Clinicians.

Nashville Songwriter Hall of Famer Kye Fleming grew up in many places as the daughter of a career Navy-man but considers Fort Smith, Arkansas home. She set out at the University of Arkansas to become a folk singer and performed her solo songwriter act in some of the legendary coffeehouses of the New York, Boston and Los Angeles scenes of the 1970s. On the brink of abandoning her career, when the bass player from Elvis Presley's band, Jerry Scheff, contacted her and recommended her to Tom Collins of Pi-Gem Music where she was teamed up with pop guitarist, Dennis Morgan. The co-writing pair made history with the BMI Songwriter of the Year award three consecutive years from 1981-1983. Kye has written 42 BMI Award winning songs including seven #1 songs. She later teamed with legendary songwriter Janis Ian and crossed over to more mainstream pop songs recorded by legends like Tina Turner, Bette Midler and Willie Nelson. Are you TIRED of the typical holiday fare and want a charming new tradition? Christmas In Connecticut is the holiday movie for you! It's the festive tale of a big city gal (the superb Barbara Stanwyck) who writes a popular Martha Stewart-esque column and has to be the perfect Martha Stewart-esque hostess for the holidays when her demanding boss (Sydney Greenstreet) and a very handsome war hero (Dennis Morgan) decide they want to spend Christmas in Connecticut with her on her farm. The only problem? The farm and her persona are pure fiction. Chaos, comedy, and romance ensue. Dennis Morgan received the most fan mail of any male actor on the Warner Brother's lot in 1947. That same year he hosted this episode of Family Theater on the Mutual Broadcasting System. This week's story is all about the power of forgiveness and second chances. The show stars William Gargan, known for his work playing 1940s film detective Ellery Queen. This episode was originally produced by Venerable Father Patrick Peyton, C.S.C. and has been remastered by Family Theater Productions. It is re-introduced by Father David Guffey, CSC.

Ep.13:The History of the Holidays in The Magic Kingdom and EPCOT. Happy Holidays Everyone..... This episode is the first in a series of Disney History episodes that we are excited to share. We wanted to give a different take on areas of Disney history that have been covered by others as we really wanted an excuse to dive deep into the lore that is Disney. Since the opening of Magic Kingdom in 1971, Christmas has been an annual celebration. Disney shares the spirit of Christmas with a massive tree covered in oversized ornaments and thousands of sparkling lights, store fronts adorned with garland, enormous wreaths, and window displays showing the magic being sold inside each shop.On December 12th, 1971 the Orlando Sentinel newspaper announced: “Walt Disney World’s first Christmas will be a spirited two-week holiday full of gaiety, tradition, colorful Disney character parades, and commemorative religious pageantry of the season. Yuletide decorations will bring added sparkle to the already fun-filled Magic kingdom — ‘decked out’ literally for Christmas with a giant tree and hundreds of wreaths of hemlock and holly.“Special daily Holiday Parades (beginning December 20) and two mammoth candlelight processionals are part of the spectacular events scheduled for the holidays. “Florally adorned by poinsettias, snapdragons, petunias and 50,000 pansies, the theme park will feature lights and decorations in each of the Main Street shop windows. And in Town Square, a snowy, 50-foot Christmas tree, especially selected and cut from a forest in Paradise, Michigan, will serve as a colorful centerpiece for the festive theme park celebration. More than 1,200 lights and a thousand giant ornaments adorn the tree.” This excited future guests who planned on visiting during the inaugural holiday season at The Magic Kingdom. With admission to the park running $4.75 which included 7-ride tickets and transportation, guests filled the 1500-rooms between the Contemporary and Polynesian resorts to capacity for the two weeks leading up to Christmas. With an exception to Christmas day the park was opened from 9am till midnight and a holiday parade featuring “marching toy soldiers, dancing reindeer, marching bands, girls playing glockenspiels and 50 famous Disney characters came to life.” Disney legend Charlie Ridgway who at the time was Disney's press agent and oversaw the public relations department of the company stated that the first year the Magic Kingdom was opened “Our 1,500 rooms in the Contemporary and the Polynesian were booked up for a year. Attendance (at Magic Kingdom) increased steadily. It rose to 600,000 in (the month of) December. Hours were extended to midnight for the Christmas holidays. For three successive days at Christmastime, the gate total approached 70,000.”For the inaugural holiday season Disney began their first holiday parade on December 20th. It ran every day until January 2nd and was complete with marching toy soldiers, dancing reindeer, school marching bands, and 50 of Disney’s famous characters and of course jolly old Saint Nick. This parade was similar to the parade that ran simultaneously in Disneyland during the holiday season. Another special event that started during the first year of Magic Kingdoms Holiday Celebration was the Candlelight Processional. Starting at Disneyland in 1958, The Candlelight Processional became an honored tradition. Singers from The University of Southern California along with local choirs were joined by school bands and performed in Town Square with a celebrity narrator who performed a dramatic reading of the Christmas story. Dennis Morgan, an American actor and singer, held this position from 1961 to 1964, and Dick Van Dyke took on the honor in 1965 to promote Mary Poppins. Like in Disneyland, the show was performed in front of the Walt Disney World Railroad Main Street USA Station in Town Square. The show took place on two nights, December 18th and 19th, at 6pm with 1200 carolers and Rock Hudson, another American actor, performing the narration both nights. Frederick Fennell conducted the orchestra and boys’ choirs made up the Christmas tree. The Candlelight Processional was moved to Epcot in 1994 after guests expressed that they wanted more shows. The America Gardens Theater in The American Adventure Pavilion, was capable of holding larger audiences of around 1000 guests becoming the dedicated location for such a performance. There were 30 performances that year spanning 15 nights, and the show was expanded even more in 1994 with 60 performances across 30 nights. This year, 2019, 108 performances are scheduled across 36 nights. Performances run nightly from November 29 through December 30, 2019. Dating back to Dec 16th, 1983 Disney hosted its first special ticketed Holiday event Mickeys Very Merry Christmas Party. This started a yearly tradition for Disney inviting guests who purchased a special event ticket to join the merry fun throughout the park. With special stops along Mainstreet and throughout the various lands of the park, hot chocolate and a variety of cookies are handed out included with admission. Along with the variety of "free" goodies Disney also releases exclusive merchandise and snacks that can only be purchased for guests who attend the party. The festivities begin at 7pm each night of the event and the "Snoap" begins to fall. Being in Florida, a state that has seen snow fall less then a handful of times in the last 100 years, Disney has created a magical addition of "snoap" which gives guests visiting the party that feeling of a white Christmas. Throughout the years Disney has perfected the art of "Snoap Fall" including this years party with what seems to be the first ever "snoap blizzard" , There's a bit of science behind the magic of snoap and according to Steve Zigmont of Zigmont Magic FX, the company that creates artificial snow for Disney World in Florida, these aren't your typical suds. "To call it a bubble is like calling David Copperfield’s work tricks... or just calling Broadway community theater," he said. Zigmont said "the bubbles in fake snow are a complex feat of engineering that result in long lasting, residue-free flakes. It starts with a liquid that is mostly water and something called a surfactant. Surfactants are naturally occurring compounds that give substances like water a lower surface tension, which means less tension is needed for the substance to form a surface." Along with the magical snoap Cinderella's castle comes alive as Elsa, Anna and Olaf pay Magic Kingdom a visit. Olaf, along with the help from the guests watching, encourage Elsa to change the castle into a magical Ice Castle. This effect is created by the use of 3D projection mapping technology along with thousands of white lights and a changing hue of teal and purple projected lights. The special lighting happens daily at 6:15and then again around 8:15 on party nights. Since the inception of the Holiday Dream Lights, this version of Cinderella's Castle is a favorite amongst guests. Starting November 8th of this year an all new firework display made its debut with“Minnie’s Wonderful Christmastime Fireworks.” . In addition to the fireworks is Mickey's Once Upon A Christmastime Parade. This parade that has seen its updates and name changes over the year. it Debuted in 1994 as Mickeys Very Merry Christmas Parade and entertained crowds up until 2007 when its name was changed to its current one. During the first week of December Disney films a special parade at The Magic Kingdom specifically for television which airs on ABC Christmas Day. The very first year this parade aired is was hosted by Joan Lunden and Michael Douglas and has aired annually since 1983 with the only exception being in 2000 when Disney aired a Christmas Eve "Tracking Santa" special instead. In 1999, a nighttime version of the parade was shown on Christmas Day for the first time. Over the years, the television program has gone through a number of name changes. During the 1980s and 90s, the program was known as The Walt Disney World Very Merry Christmas Parade. The program's name was then changed to Walt Disney World Christmas Day Parade. From 2009 through 2013, the program was referred to as the Disney Parks Christmas Day Parade. For a few years after that, the program's name would change on a yearly basis, being known as Disney Parks Frozen Christmas Celebration in 2014, Disney Parks Unforgettable Christmas Celebration in 2015, Disney Parks Magical Christmas Celebration in 2016 and 2017, and finally Disney Parks Magical Christmas Day Parade in 2018. The tradition continues with the newest rendition airing on Christmas day 2019. As Walt Disney World's annual attendance expanded so did their footprint. In 1982 The Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow or EPCOT opened its gates and offered visitors an all new theme park that became a must do when visiting Walt Disney World. Riding the coat tails of Magic Kingdom, Disney knew they needed to spice things up at Epcot to give guests a reason to stay into the evening. I’m Dreaming of a “Green” Christmas . . . The 1,500 Christmas trees at Walt Disney World Resort won’t be the only “green” holiday delights each season as each Walt Disney World resort hotel glows with new “conservation” lighting — more than 700,000 LED lights in all. String the bulbs end to end and the strand would stretch for 96 miles or light the path from Jacksonville to Orlando, all while using 1/10th of the power of traditional incandescent bulbs. Beginning November 2007, for the first time, the "Castle Dream Lights", with over 200,000 LED Christmas light citations (Web view)
This podcast takes us to “Christmas in Connecticut” from 1945. We find Elizabeth Lane played by Barbara Stanwyck embroiled in hijinks surrounding her supposed expertise in food and home matters, her nonexistent marriage, a baby (or two), an imagined home in Connecticut and fast paced comedy and a budding romance all deftly put together by Director Peter Godfrey. Participants in this freewheeling and delightful film are Dennis Morgan as Jefferson Jones the returning war hero, Sydney Greenstreet the self assured magazine publisher Alexander Yardley, Reginald Gardner as John Sloan the intense and largely ignored architect, the huge treat of S.Z. “cuddles” Sakall as Ms. Lane’s uncle and chef Felix Bassenak and a stray cow. The gaggle of folks all become intertwined in a host of situations that illustrate that old saying, “Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive”. At times I wondered how Ms. Lane would extricate herself from the frantic series of events such as not one but two babies, several interrupted marriage ceremonies, avoiding all requests to cook except flipping pancakes, a new love interest and more. We thoroughly enjoyed this holiday treat and hope you have a fun time at “Christmas in Connecticut”.Best wishes for the holidays!Up next we’re reviewing “In The Heat Of The Night”Over on Patreon you can listen to our first every “Comments Show” where we read comments left on Apple Podcast, Facebook and Patreon and make comments on the comments. The holiday season is still a few months away, but we're definitely not above breaking out the tinsel and candy canes a bit earlier than usual. Last year, we released our White Christmas episode perfectly timed to Christmas Eve, but this time around, we're taking a closer look at the 1945 release Christmas in Connecticut starring Barbara Stanwyck, Dennis Morgan and Sydney Greenstreet. Lori London, author of the Tripi the Fly children's book series, joins us to discuss the holiday-set romantic comedy, how its commentary on gender norms is actually far ahead of its time and the way in which its story relates to people who pursue passion over profit. We'll also get the lowdown on Lori's latest Tripi project and what the future may hold for her endearing little traveler. So pack your bags — you too, Tripi! — and prepare for a festive trip to up north! SYNOPSIS While recovering in a hospital, war hero Jefferson Jones (Dennis Morgan) grows familiar with the "Diary of a Housewife" column written by Elizabeth Lane (Barbara Stanwyck). Jeff's nurse arranges with Elizabeth's publisher, Alexander Yardley (Sydney Greenstreet), for Jeff to spend the holiday at Elizabeth's bucolic Connecticut farm with her husband and child. But the column is a sham, so Yardley hastens to arrange a publicity ploy by setting up single, nondomestic Elizabeth on a country farm. Using Dennis's story as an example, we discuss how Dennis became actively engaged in his children's public school to address challenges we face in New York and across the US. We follow Dennis’s story from when he was first connecting with other parents when his son was in Universal Pre-K to where he is now building programs to encourage parents of all backgrounds to keep their children in the public schools of Harlem. Listen in to hear a one parent’s journey as we explore the real challenges of engaging parents in the educational lives of their children.

It's the holiday season again which means it's time for us — Pete and Andy — to talk about another holiday classic! Join us as we talk about Peter Godfrey's screwball war comedy from 1945, "Christmas in Connecticut." We talk about how much fun the movie is and how it feels a bit pro-feminist yet how it definitely shows its age at the same time. We talk about the great cast, particularly the wonderful Barbara Stanwyck, Sydney Greenstreet, S.Z. "Cuddles" Sakall, Dennis Morgan, Reginald Gardiner and Una O'Connor, and how well they fit in their roles. We discuss Godfrey and his place in Hollywood, as well as his hobby as an amateur magician. And we chat about how this film fits in our holiday lists — is this one we'd put on every year or not? It's a fun, albeit dated, movie and we have a great time chatting about this movie. Give it a watch then tune in! Hey! You know what would be awesome? If you would drop us a positive rating on iTunes! If you like what we’re doing here on TNR, it really is the best way to make sure that this show appears when others search for it, plus, it’s just a nice thing to do. Thanks!!
